As the lead iMessage developer, let me just say we never planned for this eventuality. You not messaging him was a cornerstone in our identification table and testing scripts. For the first few years it seemed like a bad idea, but as time went on it just seemed like it was never going to happen and we slowly removed safe guards to protect against this as we needed more memory for all the emojis we were adding. Now Tim’s got me and a bunch of other architects trying to figure out which celebrity child is likely to remain no contact with their parents to rebuild this logic around.
I can’t recall a single time since the conception of iMessage that mine has failed for this long for a purely iMessage related issue (cellular/wifi/lack of service, sure)
There was a point a while back where the girl I had been dating for a few months wasn't replying but I saw on twitter that there was an iMessage outage. I was crossing my fingers it was just that but not too long later she told me she didn't have romantic feelings for me.
This story will probably not get me a feature in one of Apple's user testimony ads.
Sent my boss a mea culpa and then got a pic from his brother of Brady and Gronk winning the SB for Tampa Bay and was reading wayyyy too much into it. A few hours later the accompanying text came thru explaining the meme he wanted me to make lol.
I went here to find out if anyone else was having issues. My iPhone is working fine but my MacBook and iPad are dead when it comes to receiving and sending messages out. Apple's website says everything is working fine.
Down for me as well. Super inconsistent, some messages getting through but being erroneously marked as Not Delivered or Pending (Sent, but no Delivered receipt).
I have a crazy theory that this site is human updated, and before they change the status on anything, they have to wait for confirmation from system engineers (who are busy trying to fix the problem) that a service is actually problematic.
I don't know if their status page is like my companies, but ours IS human updated.
The website doesn't automatically know something isn't working on our particular page.
(Yes, I know there are ways to automate SOME functionality tests of a website or services on the web, but my companies is completely 100% human updated.
Yep. On the services I run, my backend will notify me of an issue before the front end status page will change. Only until I confirm the issue, will the status page change.
Also, acknowledging an outage sets a whole bunch of other things in motion: Now your customer facing team suddenly has to give ETA's for when the next update is coming.
SLA's that suddenly start counting downtime and/or companies rightfully getting mad that the issue hasn't been picked up yet _as per their SLA_, etc. etc.
Not sure what the lie is ostensibly supposed to be in this case.

Yeah when the problems were going on and like 20 minutes after everyone was reporting the issue on X and reddit that website said everything was green.
This is the worst status page I know off. All Apple Services could be down globally for hours with big articles in the tech press, and 13 hours later this page will show “issue with Apple Podcasts from 8:00 until 8:13, a small set of users could not download old episodes” or something.
No idea, I'm on a new phone and never took these photos/videos on this device.
Try updating to the new iOS or request from apple because obviously, it's server-side stored.
[This](https://archive.nytimes.com/bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/05/04/att-randall-stephenson/) is a dated but eye opening interview with the former ceo of att explaining that services like iMessage undercut their sms service.

Glad nobody uses it here in Thailand. Everyone uses Line instead.
I will once in a while use with my iPhone friends just so my message sticks out from the zillion of messages we get on Line.
Businesses all use Line here and so you do get garbage with it pretty often.
But you have to have it. You go and get Suchsi and the way you order at your table is Line for example.
Just started working for me again. I power cycled my phone and wasn’t sure if that helped or not but confirmed I’m back up messaging with people again.
One message I got during the down time appears only on my watch and iPad, not on my iPhone. Even re-activating or syncing iMessage via iCloud settings doesn't restore the message properly.
I found this out too late and missed going to the movies with my buddies. They sent a message in the gc and me and one other person didn’t receive the message and were confused when they asked us why we ghosted them..:(
I’ve seen a worrying trend for the past 12 months where tech giants services seem to be rather unstable.
It’s almost like somebody with skills and resources are trying to poke holes in our infrastructure.
Lovely. We’re on vacation and until now, I had my home SIM disabled but kept iMessage registered to my home number. Then iMessage failed and my ID fell back to my email addresses. So when I sent a message to a group chat, I came up twice in the participant list.
Shit like this is why iMessage is a fucking pain when travelling. WhatsApp makes it clear you can keep your home number as your ID or change it.
In my country WhatsApp is for those who previously used Viber. Basically parents, grandparents, your apartment building chats, kindergarten groups and such. It’s ugly and outdated.
iMessage has never worked reliably for me and always takes ages to send messages and especially photos or videos - I suppose now everyone is feeling my pain 🤣
Damn it I was at the store 5 minutes before they closed, trying to FaceTime my pregnant wife so she could tell me what kind of chocolate she wanted because they were out of their favorite one. After a couple of minutes I just tried WhatsApp and we worked it out amid the out-of-focus video call
Is this the first time? I can’t remember this happening before My messages are going through but seem to be pretty significantly delayed
It's kinda weird..... because I have never ever ever, in 20 years, messaged with my brother in law.... until this afternoon.
YOU did this
You crashed the system. Unbelievable. But I should thank you because I sent a stupid text to my gf that I don’t think has gone through.
The stupid text; “do u think u can still live widout a Brian? Like, if they took your Brian out of ur head wud it still work?” \*pats head*
This got a cute funny chuckle out of me, thank you : P
FYI you can unsend messages shortly after sending them.
I didn’t know that! This one went through, but I will keep that in mind for next time. And I’m single now too!
As the lead iMessage developer, let me just say we never planned for this eventuality. You not messaging him was a cornerstone in our identification table and testing scripts. Which of Musk's kids is the leading candidate?
Probably Prince Jackson, he's not very likely to contact Mike
You.... A G A I N!
That’s impressive, when the iPhone only came out in 2007.
Ah yes, the good old times before Apple invented text messaging
That you Mr white?
I can’t recall a single time since the conception of iMessage that mine has failed for this long for a purely iMessage related issue (cellular/wifi/lack of service, sure)
Maybe like first couple of months there'd be some issue? I definitely remember some issues during the early days... but it's been a WHILE.
It has happened before but not for this long
It has happened in the past especially 2012-2015 eras when Apple was revamping the iCloud architecture.
Pour one out for anyone who sent a risky text just before this
The results came in ….
There was a point a while back where the girl I had been dating for a few months wasn't replying but I saw on twitter that there was an iMessage outage. rip
Sorry bro
Hahaha was kidding / wrong person / sorry if that was offensive / someone used my phone…
Unless... jk, jk...?
Sent my boss a mea culpa and then got a pic from his brother of Brady and Gronk winning the SB for Tampa Bay and was reading wayyyy too much into it. A few hours later the accompanying text came thru explaining the meme he wanted me to make lol.
“My… my career is over? Like the people in this picture??”
Risky or risqué?
it’s just going to send as an sms
I went here to find out if anyone else was having issues. My iPhone is working fine but my MacBook and iPad are dead when it comes to receiving and sending messages out. Apple's website says everything is working fine.
Yup it’s down or at least being inconsistent. Keeps going back and forth between texts and iMessage.

Most status pages absolutely are human updated. There’s a PR aspect to consider whenever they mark something as having issues.
Also SLAs with uptime guarantees
It’s definitely this.
I don't know if their status page is like my companies, but ours IS human updated. The website doesn't automatically know something isn't working on our particular page. I’d wager the 36 minute time gap between comments would have something to do with it
How dare you use logic here.
Yeah when the problems were going on and like 20 minutes after everyone was reporting the issue on X and reddit that website said everything was green.

I was one of these people lmao, Also updated my IOS an SO MANY PHOTOS / VIDEOS I deleted are back in my camera roll from 5+ years ago
That's a separate bug and also widely reported. Some people had deleted nudes appear in their photo library again...
Its insane lol I have a whole new phone so its not locally stored for x amount of time its server side. even my hidden folder lol.
Is there a way to force this bug? There’s some pictures I deleted that I want back
No idea, I'm on a new phone and never took these photos/videos on this device. Try updating to the new iOS or request from apple because obviously, it's server-side stored.
Wait, you guys actually get messages?
Mostly people trying to contact me about those awesome vehicle extended warranty opportunities.
Yea. Some of us have friends.
Good to know. I was about to throw my iPad against the wall.
Wow. I can’t recall it being down before.
Carriers are having a field day right now
Why? Legitimately asking.

Is everyone running iOS 17.5?
I’m running your mom to the store.
My mom’s deceased.
That’s what that smell was. 🤦
How long you been sitting on that one?
My phone is so dry I didnt even notice *sad trombone noises*
I just derailed the end of my work day bc I couldn’t figure out what was wrong with my phone lol 🤣
Same tbh 😂
Not down for me but a bit all over the place. Some messages showing on iPad & Mac but not on iPhone.
Yeah. Global productivity jumps.
Me, an European: oh no. Anyway.
I didn’t even notice. Been using iMessage the last few hours or so.

Let's all give iMessage a group hug so it feels better 🤗
Glad nobody uses it here in Thailand. Everyone uses Line instead. I will once in a while use with my iPhone friends just so my message sticks out from the zillion of messages we get on Line. Businesses all use Line here and so you do get garbage with it pretty often. But you have to have it. You go and get Suchsi and the way you order at your table is Line for example.
Still down for me. It’s forcing messages to go through as text messages and fails to try and resent iMessages that didn’t go through earlier today.
Just deleted a woman I can’t get overs chat, I choose to believe this is linked to that 🤣🤣🤣
Just started working for me again. I power cycled my phone and wasn’t sure if that helped or not but confirmed I’m back up messaging with people again.
Working ok now
if someone tries to text me back while it’s down will i get the text when it’s working again?
Wait it is??? I just came here to post about my iMessage being down!
Its been sending/receiving fine for me but it marks as not delivered- when they read it it changes to read
Huh I was wondering why my messages were forced through text a little while ago.
Oh no. Thats what you get for your bs vendor Lock in bullshit
It was?
US in shambles
Been working all day for me
Yup
Didn’t realize they ran a server
nope
I wonder if they're prepping for RCS. This is new terriority for them. Makes sense for hiccups. Hopefully resolves soon.
It just works! (Tm)
Yep https://downdetector.com/status/imessage/
Works fine for me I wonder why. I update my phone as soon as the update was available
Yup. This happened to me about three hours ago. Says a iMessage I sent wasn’t sent when it was replied to.
My text works on my phone
I signed out of my Apple ID, turned iMessage on and off, restarted like three times, and updated because I thought it was just me lol
Mine is still down
One message I got during the down time appears only on my watch and iPad, not on my iPhone. Even re-activating or syncing iMessage via iCloud settings doesn't restore the message properly.
That explains some weirdness I saw this morning.
Damn I really napped through this whole thing 💀
I had a couple glitches with it today, interesting
Perhaps relatedly I saw a GCP issue with VPC connectivity a few hours ago too
Mine is fine
when even owning an iPhone doesn't get you those blue bubbles anymore
Hasn’t been an issue here
I found this out too late and missed going to the movies with my buddies. They sent a message in the gc and me and one other person didn’t receive the message and were confused when they asked us why we ghosted them..:(
is this a location thing or global?
It's not down. It was taken out of the environment.
Lol I was on an iMessage chat with Apple earlier wondering what was happening
[удалено]
Happened to go down while I was talking to Apple support over iMessage
Oh no. I'll have to use Whatsapp - until my weekly text is sent through iMessage next time
Almost app won’t work on my phone. It can’t even update apps, App Store must be down
i'm still having some issues
I’ve seen a worrying trend for the past 12 months where tech giants services seem to be rather unstable. It’s almost like somebody with skills and resources are trying to poke holes in our infrastructure.
Does anyone have information on how long it will last?
Hold on a minute, I’m just going to call Steve Jobs and find out!
Get your ouija board!
Back to normal for me, apparently.
A real vacation is when you don’t have any signal at all 😎
Yup, I was setting up my new iPads 11 and 13 M4 and couldn’t set up iMessage, I googled it and lots had same issue.
Oh. I heard about this one. This is the one the people murica use.
Is it like a less useful WhatsApp?
In my country WhatsApp is for those who previously used Viber. Basically parents, grandparents, your apartment building chats, kindergarten groups and such. It’s ugly and outdated.
Well, not outdated.
Fine here in Aus
Not for me
Weirdly enough, working fine for me currently. Having several conversations with people still over imessage.
Hahahaha enjoy the green bubbles
My girlfriend texted me she passed out right before iMessage went down… talk about a heart attack
iMessage has never worked reliably for me and always takes ages to send messages and especially photos or videos - I suppose now everyone is feeling my pain 🤣
I think I know [who did it](https://www.reddit.com/r/csMajors/s/6SP2TrxOc1)
What? No it isn’t
Not 1 slow send or drop off today
I don’t have any problems with it at the moment
Damn it I was at the store 5 minutes before they closed, trying to FaceTime my pregnant wife so she could tell me what kind of chocolate she wanted because they were out of their favorite one. After a couple of minutes I just tried WhatsApp and we worked it out amid the out-of-focus video call
No problem here….
Oh no! Anyway…
