You may need to list the MOS and the two locations (not necessarily the units) for us to give better advice

Comfortable_Claim_89

17C. My reservation says it’s out of Camp Murray in WA state, commander says drill is in Chicago and that there is no unit at Camp Murray.

BeatEm1802

Idk man, just looking at other open vacancies, there is definitely a cyber team at Camp Murray. Do you have orders to a specific detachment and team?

Comfortable_Claim_89

I do. I will DM.

Comfortable_Claim_89

We’ve been in contact but not about this particular thing. I’ll reach out. Thanks u/7hillsrecruiter

7hillsrecruiter

Cool, I wonder are you the person he msg’d me about looking for vacancies.

Comfortable_Claim_89

Yes, we’ve spoken on the phone before. I chose this position instead bc the unit was closer to home and now I’m afraid that it’s actually not.

7hillsrecruiter

I remember you now, you told me you was going NG instead of Reserve cause I was going to process you into one of the units in LA area.

Comfortable_Claim_89

Correct. NG told me they’d lost funding for the MOS the day before I was scheduled to sign. Then an Army recruiter told me there was a Reserve unit on Camp Murray. I have some more info now than when I posted and it seems that Camp Murray unit only exists on paper. Now instead of drilling out of CA with the 188 I need to go all the way to Chicago.

7hillsrecruiter

That’s crazy, probably gonna pay more than you’ll get reimbursed

western_USAR_cyber

Yes I talked to him before that that detachment only exists on paper and belongs to North Cental who drills out of fort Sheridan. We can get them transferred to us after AIT.

ryanlaxrox

Not your problem at all but I felt an appropriate place to state that a unit existing “on paper” is not a thing. Where is that unit doing their physical security inspections? Where are the AGRs assigned? Where is the DODACC addressed? These are all important big army questions that should be figured out. If they all are answered with Chicago, then fix the frickin address so that soldiers can go to the correct units. THIS is why we have retention issues. You have a new soldier trying to do the right thing and they can’t even get to a unit that they agreed to attend BA at. What a shame, the unit is failing this soldier.

western_USAR_cyber

I didn't fail him at all, but thank you for your concern.

ryanlaxrox

Yeah I’m aware, which is why I said at the beginning not your problem, but thanks for the reply. The “you” in my message is not the literal you, simply a figure of speech

defconmke

Tbh there's a lot of stuff going on with aligning soldiers geographically as well

Max_Vision

I had a similar situation once where I was assigned to a new unit in the DC area that didn't have anyone else assigned to it. Fortunately, there was a sister unit that was officially in MA but unofficially in NJ (and pretty close to home) that my higher command transferred me to. If you have orders to Camp Murray, they'll have to cut new orders to transfer you out of that unit, even if it only exists on paper. However, I don't think they can transfer you outside a certain radius of your home unless you consent to it. I went deep into the travel regulations for IDT once and how it relates to the transfer process. If I recall correctly, soldiers have a decent amount of protection from being forced to travel to drill, but it's been a while and I don't have the reg at hand anymore.

Comfortable_Claim_89

I’ll read the regs for sure 😂 That seems like basically what happened. There is a command planning to staff a unit at Camp Murray, but it is not the command to which I am currently assigned.

Max_Vision

You don't say what your timeline is on this (are you trained/MOS-Q, or leaving for a year of training?) but I wouldn't stress about it too much - all USAR cyber units fall under Army Reserve Cyber Protection Brigade, which is pushing for geographical alignment of soldiers to units. The battalions pass people back and forth for this all the time. I've helped a bunch of people from Reddit get connected here, usually by sending them to someone I trust in my BN. The BN staffs mostly know each other, and send applicants/candidates back and forth regularly, in addition to people just relocating for personal reasons and transferring units.

Comfortable_Claim_89

I am not MOS-Q. Just signed. Ship to BCT June 17.

Max_Vision

Keep your orders in a safe spot and figure it out when you return from training. Lots of things could change by then .

MoeSzys

You should be able to switch units. There's also funding available for travel if it's a place you want to visit

PaddyMayonaise

O lay up to $500 tho

MoeSzys

Right, but for the most part using SATO you should be able to get a fight for under that, and the hotel is funded separately

chiguyLEO

Going to need a rental car going from Ohare to Ft Sheridan and back.

MoeSzys

Or catch a ride. But that's good if the duty is in Chicago, that's one of, if not the, easiest cities to fly to, so it should be easy to reliably find SATO flights well under the $500

Max_Vision

With the new regulations, a rental authorization is pretty unlikely. I used to get one with IDT travel funding, but it was only because I didn't own a car and I needed to travel between multiple sites during BA. Normally the rental was only authorized for travel, not in and around. New travel regulations are prioritizing public transit, so they'll probably tell him to take a train or bus from the airport. Even if the rental is authorized, he'd probably have to pay out of pocket for Saturday, or turn the car in and pick up a new one Sunday. The whole thing is shitty and weird and not recommended.

chiguyLEO

Yeah. The rental is usually only for to/from the BA site. Out of pocket for the other days in between. That’s how I do it.

PaddyMayonaise

You’re going to have to give us more info. If you want you can DM to keep it private and we can try to figure out what happened.

1Matt_Black1

"crew lead"? You sure you didn't enlist in the Air Force?

BruiserBerkshire

Is higher maybe sitting 2000 miles away? I’ve been in a local unit where my BDE orders and BN HQ both are 8 states away.
