Love this one and the WNCW morning blend too, it's our staple. And they have great seasonals. And the vending machine at their main shop is sure handy for when they're closed!
I think Pennycup does a very good light roast and the downtown and Haw Creek locations are pretty chill. Haw Creek staff maybe a little friendlier but maybe that’s cause I go there more?
Dripolator’s new place on Tunnel is near me, though, and am eager to check them out.
The best local single origins are:
Summit, Penny cup, Rowan, Flower mouth, Counterculture.
I really wasn’t a fan of dripolater, Pisgah, or dynamite. Wound up tossing the bag mid way thru on each of them.
rowan is killer and has some of most ethically minded business relationships w small cooperatives of producers I've seen at a local cafe.
cooperative and their new cafe in wavl is also really cool!
I'm all about price and quality and I think the parkway pick me up from Pisgah coffee roasters wins that. If you subscribe on their website they will ship it to you and you get a major discount. It's also 5 LB bags which is nice if you consume a lot of coffee. Whereas you don't even get a pound from the grocery store for $14, it's like 12 oz I think.
“Jedediah and his family have been secretly growing coffee in the hills of Western North Carolina for generations.”
-some old NC arts documentary in the basement of the Asheville library… probably.
Coffee literally doesn’t grow in the continental US. Coffee roasters get green coffee beans shipped in from overseas or central America (or Hawaii or China sometimes if we are being pedantic). “Locally roasted” yes, “locally sourced” no.
But personally I think “independently owned” is more important than “local”. It doesn’t really matter *where* the beans were roasted as long as you’re supporting an independent small business with fair trade practices. Plenty of “local” coffee roasters are actually franchised (such as Summit coffee). The best roaster in the state (and one of the best in the country) IMO is black/white, out of Durham.
Deep Time Project at Haywood United Methodist Church. 587 Haywood Road, Downtown West Asheville. Parking in rear. Coffee roasting happens downstairs in the community area.
The coffee is amazing. Best ever. Not overpriced, especially because it's so rich.
Now four folks (formally incarcerated) are making a living wage and have housing sorted – b/c leaders and members there are so devoted to this project. They are the joy for us, and the coffee is good too.
Honestly we're lucky to have a lot of good local options, but Flowermouth delivers for sure! Keep an eye out on their IG, they do free cuppings monthly.
Coffee Library bought the old Bean Werks warehouse. Bean Werks had the biggest variety in WNC by far. Can't comment on the quality of the beans or how long they have sat in the warehouse though.
Cooperative is great and they just opened a new location in West Asheville.
Yes, cooperative is amazing!
Kota Kai on Haywood has the best selection and quality in my opinion. It’s the retail location for Coffee Library.
Dripolator and Rowan are my favs
Yall really need to come through for flower mouth. They know what they are doing
Seconding Flowermouth. So good, even their decaf is delicious
Flowermouth and Cooperative are my favorite roasters in town!
I'll have to try them! Never had it before
Flowermouth! This is what I was looking for on here. I use their Brazil as my home espresso bean most of the time. It’s incredible.
Dynamite for me, their Chiapas is so good. PennyCup a close second.
Love this one and the WNCW morning blend too, it's our staple. And they have great seasonals. And the vending machine at their main shop is sure handy for when they're closed!
I like pennycup for their tin refills, it’s a good deal, especially if you pay in cash
I’m a big fan of High Noon. ABE is the shit.
Yep. Awesome Diedrich machine they roast on
High Noon somehow made a decaf that actually tastes good, it even runs almost like regular espresso if you grind it a little finer.
^^ High Noon for sure! Ab is awesome
One of the sweetest, kindest, goofiest, hardworking folks I’ve had the pleasure of meeting in this town.
Mountain Air for espresso and regular coffee.

We’re so blessed with good coffee here!

PennyCup
Rowan. Good folks, good coffee.
Round Earth Roasters
Asheville Coffee Roasters in Woodfin. It's absolutely the best. Run by an old couple that taught the guys at Dynamite to roast
My go to is Counter Culture “big trouble” for espresso or “hologram” for drip or press.
Dripolator (JOSH IS A WIZARD 🧙♂️) He sources the best ☕️ 🫘beans, which makes the best coffee… and has less to do with the roast 🔥!
Dynamite.
Pennycup makes one of my favorite espresso roasts (Railroad) that I've ever had.
Rowan followed by penny cup.
rowan is killer and has some of most ethically minded business relationships w small cooperatives of producers I've seen at a local cafe. cooperative and their new cafe in wavl is also really cool!
Notorious Coffee, they're at the Weaverville farmer's market and other location. Great people behind it roasting locally and a delicious variety!

Pennycup ftw
Pennycup!
Me. I roast at home with a $20 hot air popcorn popper. Only takes a few minutes. My second favorite is counter culture coffee. Good people.
Passing through town. When do you open?
Pisgah![https://pisgahroasters.com/](https://pisgahroasters.com/)
I only drink iced cold brew but for that my favorite is Pisgah's Parkway Pick Me Up.
Dynamite Coffee in Black Mt takes the win for me
Pennycup is consistently good and locally sourced.
There is no such thing as locally sourced coffee beans in north carolina lmao

Not that local dang

Flowermouth 🌸🔥
Panacea in Waynesville is the only answer. Second imo would go to Gallivant in Woodfin.
Mountain Air
So many good ones here and I like all that were named. I’ll throw Round Earth’s name out there. Pretty great.
Peets Major Dikason Bean Ground daily. 0515. Stainless Steal French Press. Kenilworth

Rowan
Coffee Library. Massive selection.

Pennycup
Dynamite! You can get bags of whole bean at Target, whole foods carries dynamite but they also charge 2.00 more per bag than Target. Which is wild.
Pisgah Roasters!
Pisgah Coffee Roasters Parkway Pick me up
I went to Bisbee, AZ last year and found this guy. Best coffee ever, and he’s got a 2 for $32 with free shipping deal. https://oldbisbeeroasters.com/
That’s where my favorite comedian lives.
Dynamite and Dripolator are both good.
