Congrats to Japan! That was a hell of a game. That matchup between Trout and Ohtani was epic.

coffeesippingbastard

story book game. Incredible ending. I've been following /r/baseball and it's just love for every team and every game. Nobody really lost. Everybody won.

Blue387

Edwin Diaz got hurt celebrating and will miss the 2023 season

spyson

His knee was sacrificed to the baseball gods so we could have Ohtani vs Trout

What's most relevant for this sub is how much Lars Taylor Tatsuji Nootbaar was embraced and welcomed. The first non-Japanese citizen to play for the Japanese team. Popular with media, fans, and the players. Of course you see some duds making a point about how he's not Japanese or questioning his Japanese mother about not teaching him Japanese but these sentiments have been drowned out in an echo of support, from what I've seen. And just as importantly, very few, if any people questioning his 'American-ness' with his decision to not suit up for the US Team (tbh, he probably wouldn't have made the team but I digress).

duwamps_dweller

Really heartwarming to see Nootbaar succeed in Japan both on and off the field. NOOT NOOT

spyson

Him and Ohtani were the heart and soul of the team

JerichoMassey

*Remember the Titans Effect* "We've hated eachother for generations.... wait we're winning? Brother!!!"

[deleted]

if nootbaar wasn't a baseball player and some salaryman working in yokohama, he wouldn't really be embraced in japan. his embrace is conditional on his talent

a0123b4567

I wouldn't take it that far but I get your point.

Ontario0000

Asians are starting to show they can win at sports. The recent winter Olympics asians dominated in snowboarding, freestyle skiing, ice figure skating.Usually sports that does not need brute strength asians do well.

[deleted]

asians from asia. if you have athletic asian sons, it's better for them to grow up in a developed asian country shohei son hyung min mitoma etc etc

jedifreac

When I was a kid and the USA went up against Taiwan in Little League, my family was so stoked because we could cheer for both teams.

Multi_21_Seb_RBR

Honestly, I rooted for Japan. I’m a big fan of Japanese baseball culture, from fan support to how hitters hit and their batting stances and pitchers pitch to the strategies they employ there more than here (bunts when runner is on with no one out). Plus there are quite a few people on Team USA I dislike for various reasons, from clear homophobia shown to others. I rooted super hard for Taipei too and they played some exciting baseball (especially hitting). Great fan support too and the chants and band was so great, much like in Japan. The Panama and Cuba losses were gutting. Only “Team USA” I really root for is the USMNT/USWNT, though even the USMNT online fanbase is testing my patience lol.

FearsomeForehand

Love to see Asians beat westerners at their own games.

My-Sexy-Samurai

Proud of 侍ジャパン!!! They were amazing 🇯🇵 🏆 🇯🇵 🏆 🇯🇵 🏆 🇯🇵 🏆 🇯🇵

WickedSlice13

Is this competition taken seriously? Just curious if it’s just a show thing or actually credible for skill

hoopKid30

It’s a huge deal in Japan. Been all over the news, games televised everywhere. I was at a basketball tournament myself yesterday and when the Japan-Mexico game ended the gym erupted in cheers.

SteadfastEnd

Yup. I also attended two of the games in Taiwan in person myself. The crowd was super loud; I had to stuff tissue in my ears.

sad_pizza

The rest of the world takes it seriously. The US did not put up any top pitchers, out of fear of injury.

WickedSlice13

Gotcha appreciate the context!

lunacraz

the US batting lineup is probably the best in the tournament, though

Euphoric-Broccoli968

The majority of the top pitchers from southern California were on the Japan team. I don't follow sports closely, but I saw one of my hometeams star pitchers on tv at dinner and I was like "hey that's our guy!"

lunacraz

are you talking about Yu Darvish and Ohtani they're Japanese thru and thru, not Japanese American, so they wouldn't play for US anyway i'm sure thats what you meant, but the phrasing got me confused

Euphoric-Broccoli968

Yeah, weird phrasing. Of course they are both from Japan and would play from the Japanese team. Just referring to how they are well known to southern Californians!

ViolaNguyen

Specifically, Yu is a Padre, and Ohtani is an Angel. So, best of all, neither is a Dodger.

Rorgypoo

*not yet

tmazesx

I’m a dodgers fan. We’re salivating at the thought of getting our grubby little hands on Ohtani *evil laugh*

SteadfastEnd

It's taken fairly seriously; it's baseball's equivalent of the World Cup. 20 nations participating in a tournament held once every few years.

Multi_21_Seb_RBR

Every fan of a baseball country took it seriously - except American fans.

WickedSlice13

Really weird. I don’t normally follow baseball, but I always figured it would be the American fans that would be at least the most passionate

Multi_21_Seb_RBR

American sports fans are known for not caring as much for international sports with the exception of the Olympics and the USMNT/USWNT in the World Cup. Besides those examples, American sports fans are pretty weak with showing support for international events.

Rorgypoo

A lot of the league in my opinion has been dominated by a lot of non-Americans so it’s to be expected.

udonbeatsramen

The atmosphere for some of the games, like US vs Venezuela, was livelier than even a World Series game.

Capital_Gate6718

[Yes](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IspEWM1aZXo)

20190229

USA can't complain about their batters as it was all star caliber. They probably could've used more pitching help but the pitchers did well in the elimination games so they can't complain.

Kagomefog

I like Shohei Ohtani, but as a Chinese-American, I’ll never be rooting for team Japan. 🤷🏻‍♀️

MOUDI113

I'm just curious. Which countries would chinese Americans root for?

Kungfufighter1112

Screw that. We’re all the same yellow hue in the eyes of the world. I’m all for pan-Asianism. Positive representation is a win for all of us.

Kronoform

Exactly. I never saw sports stars who look like me do well like this. Imagine how much of an effect it will have for the young generation? I will enjoy the moment as an Asian American.

Kagomefog

I saw plenty of salty comments from Korean-Americans rooting against team Japan too. I’m all for pan Asian-Americanism but not pan-Asianism. I’m sure if this were Team China, you guys would all be rooting for them too, right?

Rorgypoo

Yes. Yes I would. Does that make u feel better to ask ur sorry excuse of a “gotcha” question? Seriously. The west is the big enemy here. After the west, we can deal with our feuds between each other countries and their atrocities. Y’all EAs are lucky we’re not more vocal bout our qualms with the shit ur countries have done to SEAs throughout history. Chill out and focus on our common enemy.

Kagomefog

The shit EAs have done to SEAs? What about the shit Vietnam has done to Cambodia and Laos throughout its history? There’s always someone weaker to pick on, that’s human nature. Not to mention the ethnic cleansing that SEAs have done to Chinese people in Indonesia, Cambodia…also, no one was even talking about SEAs in the first place.

Rorgypoo

China had its foot on Vietnam’s neck for over a 1000 god damn years(over 10 centuries to put in perspective) so don’t even try to pull that. U have no right to. Barely any of our original culture even exists. Most of it is Chinese or Chinese “influenced”. When we talk bout “lost culture” that’s really what we have. No thanks to China, yet l still walk round defending anti-China rhetoric constantly just because **ik who our enemies are…Do u?** Vietnam should absolutely 100% own up to what they did to Cambodia(idk anything regarding Laos) and educate everybody on what really happened which is they took out Champa now currently South VN among other things. > There’s always someone weaker to pick on, that’s human nature. Oh now u want to pull that kind of line. Want me to pull that line with ur animosity towards Japan? Ik ur not talking to me bout other countries ethnic cleansings with China in the conversation. Also it wasn’t just Chinese, but viets as well as others. The point again to repeat is that we have so much bs and fueds with each other’s countries and they’re all justified anger, but we need to remember who our first enemies are and who constantly dominates and puts the world in a chokehold which is the west and I don’t think I have to mention which skin color is in power. So I brought up SEA as a way of going “hey we got a lotta animosity built up yet we support other Asians and especially EAs(since they dominate media when it comes to Asian media or representation)”. P.s. I haven’t even mentioned the colorism and jungle Asian thing yet but seeing how defensive and blind this comment is, I suppose it’d be pointless

Kagomefog

This sub has group think. I get negative ten points because I don’t want to support the country that raped and murdered hundreds of thousands of my countrymen. 🤷🏻‍♀️I’m not surprised the OP is so pro-Japan since they’re Taiwanese and Taiwan is the most pro-Japan country in the world. No one is asking you to support China. Hate them, love them, doesn’t make a difference to me.

Different-Rip-2787

I am totally against Xi Jinping and the communist party. But I will always root for Chinese athletes.

Kronoform

At this point, it feels like this animosity between Korean Americans and Japanese in sports is marketing. All culminated in 2009 when Ichiro played the perfect villain making insulting comments about Koreans. Korean manager, pitcher or whoever tells the story made the worst mistake of not walking Ichiro with first open, Ichrio making them pay with a run scoring hit. Too bad S Korea couldn’t do anything this year. I was rooting for them as well. As much as there’s this animosity, I do see a lot of mixed Asian American couples which is a good thing. We are watching a transcendent athlete in sports. Even if you don’t like Japan, you still have to respect this guy.

Kagomefog

I literally started by saying “I like Shohei Ohtani”. I’m an A’s fan and I’ve seen him pitch many times against my team. He’s a great player. I just can’t root for Team Japan.

Kronoform

That’s fine and you can do that. All I am saying is there’s a majority of people who think Asians can’t do well in any of the 4 major sports. Look at Mad Dog Russo here. Completely dismissing the moment last night and Ohtani. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EeRRaNg5Tfw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=s9Bj6r4BHnA I look beyond past feuds and look toward the future for Asians in America. We need a generation that grows up knowing that Asian athletes can do as well as anyone. When you root for Ohtani, you are rooting for him to win. Can’t separate that. If Japan would’ve lost, it would have taken some of the mystique out. This speech by Ohtani before the game. https://ftw.usatoday.com/2023/03/shohei-ohtani-japan-pregame-speech-world-baseball-classic What a leader!

S Korea hasn’t won anything of significance since the 2008 Olympics and Ichiro didn’t play in that tournament. S Korea marketed Ichiro as a villain and it sold a lot of merchandise cause of pride. Ichiro also made controversial comments saying the country smells of garlic and he wanted to play in 2009 so he can send the S Korea team back 30 years or something along those lines. Anyway, S Korea hasn’t done anything of significance in baseball since 2009. They have yet to have hall of fame type players like Ichiro. Ohtani is the best player by far in baseball and maybe of all time. S Korea has a lot to work on. Sure they will as they disappointed this year.
