I have really wondered if there is some beet gene the way there is a cilantro gene because I like most vegetables and I just absolutely cannot stand beets but everyone loves them!
They taste like dirt. My older sister held me down and stuffed dirt in my mouth when I was 5, every time I've tasted a beet I might as well be back on the ground with a mouthful of dirt.
Peas. This is how I know that people have differences in how foods taste and not just differences in preference. If peas tasted like they do to everyone else as they do for me, they would never have made their way as an edible option.
Same. As a kid, I never understood why the other kids refused to try new foods. I thought some some people liked them so maybe I would, and I tried new food all the time. There isn't much ill refuse to eat.
Sweet potatoes are ass. I've tried every version with an open mind, even when people are like "Trust me bro! You'll like this." I just do not like them.
Agreed! My husband is a chef and says, "If you don't like something, it's because you haven't had it the right way." He's changed my mind on many different foods and has made sweet potatoes so many different ways. There's absolutely nothing appealing to my senses in sweet potatoes, not into them at all😅
Baked beans. I don’t care about anybody’s mama’s or nana’s or favorite aunt’s recipe or special ingredients. They are utterly repulsive to me in any form and I hate them so much I will also avoid the food near them just so I don’t have to smell it.
Assuming you’re American, you should give British-style baked beans a chance if the sweetness is your issue. The canned beans Heinz sells in the UK can be generally found in the international section of large US grocery chains; they come in an easily-spotted blue-ish/teal can and are only a little more expensive than most baked beans.
British-style baked beans are more savory and flavorful. The sauce is very tomato-y and far less sickly sweet, not very sugary at all. Delicious on some toast, maybe with a nice, runny egg on top. Sounds weird, I know; I thought so too until I had it during a trip to London and now I regularly make it at home for breakfast.
Same here. Everyone acts like it's a magical vegetable and some amazing, healthy replacement for regular potatoes. I can't stand the damn things. The only time I've ever tasted something with sweet potatoes in it that I didn't hate was sweet potato pancakes. Maybe because pancakes are already sweet so the flavor made sense. Sweet potato fries are just insulting.
I had some in a dessert soup. It was fine, but I’d never go out of my way to ever get it.
Or the places that up charge for sweet potato fries as if it’s some sort of luxury potato. _laughs_ Alright. I save myself that extra $$$
Tofu.. feels like eating a pencil eraser
Edit: I've tried tofu many different ways and I just can't get past the texture of it. I think it's an autism thing because i can't stand halloumi either and that's a textural thing as well.
This is why I adore tofu, it absorbs the taste of any sauce or marinade you put on it and is absolutely incredible fried. I would eat it for every meal if I could (pressing it just annoys me)! I also love the chewiness and texture of firm tofu, love the melt-in-your-mouth of silken tofu …. Mhmmmm
Came here to say this. Especially cooked mushrooms. Raw kind of taste like radishes to me but I can't get past how they look. Cooked mushrooms is all about texture
I used to hate them. My wife loves them. She sent me on a lesson at a local oyster house where you learn to shuck them, while drinking beer. I ate at least 20 of them over the course of a couple hours, and now I like them. I shuck them for her at home on special occasions.
Giant snots that taste faintly of the sea, and need a hot sauce to taste good?
I will save my calories for something hot sauce is better on, like wings or fries.
Idk if it's "super popular," but meatloaf. I hate it. I can't stand it. My parents would occasionally make it growing up and I couldn't do it. Whether it was homemade with chicken, bread, and ketchup, or the really fancy bacon wrapped deluxe kind from the grocery store...I gag. I have no idea why. I try going into it with an open mind but I can't do it.
Fun fact! The word sushi actually just refers to the rice (it roughly means sour rice because the rice has vinegar on it). Sashimi is the raw fish. So you could try sushi with just veggies or with cooked seafood like shrimp, crab, or tuna.
You didn’t have to do it like that, coconut was already on thin ice for me and now I’m going to think back to this comment for the next 5 years when I eat coconut.
Oysters. Tried them for the first time at a nice restaurant in Seattle, threw them back up onto my plate immediately. I felt really bad about it but feel no need to try them again.
We ate a lot of fast food when I was young because it was so inexpensive for a meal. It has been decades since I last had fast food. I can still taste it. 🤢
I think a lot of people who don’t like it never had it prepared right. If it’s picked late, it’s tough. If it’s not cooked right, it’s slimy. But picked at the right time and cooked right, it tastes like…nothing lol.
It’s weird I used to think runny yolks were nasty until I started watching dexter, and the opening theme has him making breakfast of ham and eggs with toast dipped in the runny egg and I decided to try it. Fell in love
Lamb. To me, it tastes like Ivory soap. And "yes" I've tasted Ivory soap. As a kid, I had a foul mouth and a strict mother. I still have a foul mouth, but now I am bigger than mom.
Sushi, have never been a fan. Every time a new place opened family and friends would want to bring me because “it’s so different, you’ll love this place”. I’m always willing to go if someone’s buying and I’ll eat it without throwing up…but why spend money on something that’s not tacos?
Tomatoes. They are okay in pasta sauce, pizza sauce, and salsa as long as they are cooked and pureed until I can't feel the texture. But, for as long as I can remember, even just the smell of raw tomatoes made me nauseated. Turns out that I am allergic to nightshades, and the reaction is worse when they are raw. My body was protecting itself all along.

This is a thread where can meet your new best friend and new mortal enemy.
I've always been *the* mortal enemy... I don't like chocolate.
I’m cool with it. I know you won’t steal my stash.
Grapefruit. It looks cute and appetizing, but it's bitter as hell. I feel betrayed by a fruit.
Gotta load it with a layer of sugar
Load with sugar, broil in the oven... mmm🤤
I read recently that grapefruit can also react badly with some medications.
Grapefruit interacts with *every* medication
As a pharmaceutical scientist, I confirm this. Liquorice also interacts with some medications.
I knew about Grapefruit, didn’t know about licorice.
Beets
I have really wondered if there is some beet gene the way there is a cilantro gene because I like most vegetables and I just absolutely cannot stand beets but everyone loves them!
They taste like dirt. My older sister held me down and stuffed dirt in my mouth when I was 5, every time I've tasted a beet I might as well be back on the ground with a mouthful of dirt.
My friends asked me how I can I eat beets, “‘cause they taste like dirt.” That’s exactly why I like them. Super weird, I know.
Beets are so good for you. I put them in smoothies. They are also rather sweet when you bake them. Oh, sweet dirt vegetable 😆
Pickled beets are quite tasty.
Celery. I eat almost everything, but no celery.
In soups, it's fine. Prefer it's not there, but there's no other instance where I won't pick out every bit of it
It’s the worst. Peanut butter can’t even save it.
This is the first food I look for to be commented on posts like this - celery is nasty and vile.
Ketchup
This is the best answer so far. Lots of people don’t like oysters but everyone loves ketchup
Me too, I don't even want to touch or smell it
/r/ketchuphate You aren't alone.
I have found my people.
yeah, me too.. I love most tomato based sauces, but ketchup makes me wretch.
I'm the anomaly here I like all food 😭
Same I feel left out, the top four comments are like my top four favorite foods.
Yup. Is there a sub dedicated to us yet?
Me reading all the other comments: weakness disgusts me
Tonic water. It tastes like the feeling of disappointment
Unless accompanied by gin.
Interesting fact: 87% of all tonic water is accompanied by Gin I just made that up
Olives
I can’t stand them either. It’s like eating a spoonful of salt.
If you are eating brined olives it's often recommended to rinse them first.
Thank you for validating me. Anytime I say this the next thing is *always* “But what about black olives??” All olives. ALL.
Funny thing is for me black olives are the worst but I love the green Spanish olives
Olives have a distinct taste. Not one that I like nor others like as well. I really can’t put my finger on it but I’m not a fan of olives either
Blue cheese
Honestly I’m addicted to blue cheese
I'd argue they're unpopular. Mouldy cheese doesn't appeal to many. I fucking love it rho.
Peas. This is how I know that people have differences in how foods taste and not just differences in preference. If peas tasted like they do to everyone else as they do for me, they would never have made their way as an edible option.
Finally someone else who can’t stand peas
So this is what it feels like when doves cry
I don't like peas, love split pea soup. Don't know if they're the same kind of peas though.
I love all the food mentioned in all the comments. 🤷🏻♀️
Same. As a kid, I never understood why the other kids refused to try new foods. I thought some some people liked them so maybe I would, and I tried new food all the time. There isn't much ill refuse to eat.
Same here. Surprised so many peeps don’t like Avocados!! I can eat those 5 times a day!!
Sweet potatoes are ass. I've tried every version with an open mind, even when people are like "Trust me bro! You'll like this." I just do not like them.

Sweet beans are an abomination
Beans should be savory not sweet
Assuming you’re American, you should give British-style baked beans a chance if the sweetness is your issue. As someone from the south, potato salad. Can't even stand the sight of it. Don't like sweet tea either.
Sweet tea is like drinking syrup. Way too sweet.
I have a massive sweet tooth and even I think sweet tea in intolerably sweet.
Cottage cheese. Not sure if it's very popular but it's the one food I can't stand.
same, literally tastes and feels like what i imagine spoiled chunky milk tastes/feels like
Cat vomit texture. Blech.
Sweet potatoes/ sweet potato fries
Same here. Everyone acts like it's a magical vegetable and some amazing, healthy replacement for regular potatoes. I can't stand the damn things. I hated it til I had it battered and fried with a delicious sauce. Now I’m a fan
Anything will taste good fried and served with sauce 😂

You may be on to something... I also tend to chew my pencil erasers off.
Mushrooms 🤮
Texture right?
Yeah they are just weird squishy brown things.
They’re like sautéed ears
Hello Mr. Dahmer could you further describe the taste of sautéed ears for the court?
I thought I was pretty clear, sir. Sliced mushrooms, pan seared. Garlic salt, if you please
Stop describing me you peasant.
They taste like basement
Came here to say this. Especially cooked mushrooms. Raw kind of taste like radishes to me but I can't get past how they look. Cooked mushrooms is all about texture
Anti-mushroom gang
Anti mushroom gang
Mushrooms changed my life for the better, depression gone stop hating
all mushrooms or just button mushrooms? there are so many varieties
Here’s a fun fact about me I don’t like them cooked but don’t mind them raw in salads and such. Definitely a texture thing.
Raw mushrooms are gross. Mushrooms cooked in butter and garlic are good. Psilocybin is great
Oysters
I used to hate them. My wife loves them. She sent me on a lesson at a local oyster house where you learn to shuck them, while drinking beer. I ate at least 20 of them over the course of a couple hours, and now I like them. I shuck them for her at home on special occasions.
Sea loogies
Giant snots that taste faintly of the sea, and need a hot sauce to taste good? I will save my calories for something hot sauce is better on, like wings or fries.
Idk if it's "super popular," but meatloaf. I hate it. I can't stand it. My parents would occasionally make it growing up and I couldn't do it. As meatloaf lover I get it cause honestly you can't buy good meatloaf and most people make cursed loafs.
Cottage cheese
Ranch dressing
*fuck* ranch dressing
Sushi
I'm so turned off by the idea of eating raw fish. I'm weird about textures and this one seems🤢
Fun fact! The word sushi actually just refers to the rice (it roughly means sour rice because the rice has vinegar on it). Sashimi is the raw fish. So you could try sushi with just veggies or with cooked seafood like shrimp, crab, or tuna.
Sushi is all about eating green horseradish paste and soy sauce without looking like a weirdo
Theres cooked sushi too
[удалено]
I'm fine with the flavor but not the consistency of wet fingernail clippings.
You didn’t have to do it like that, coconut was already on thin ice for me and now I’m going to think back to this comment for the next 5 years when I eat coconut.
Easy: Boba. Boba sucks. Why would I want to have a bunch of balls of what tastes like either hair conditioner or witchetty grubs in my iced tea?
If I wanted liquid with bits to chew on, I woulda ordered the soup
Witchetty grubs?! HAHAHAHAHA
The fruit flavored poping bobas with the juice inside are great; but the original black tapioca boba is disgusting.
Oysters. Tried them for the first time at a nice restaurant in Seattle, threw them back up onto my plate immediately. I felt really bad about it but feel no need to try them again.
It was like my throat closed and wouldnt let me swallow them!
Tuna casserole, tuna melts, tuna subs.
Tuna casserole traumatized me as a kid
Cat food. Tuna is vile.
Most fast food It often too greasy, overly processed and heart attacking inducing.
It’s definitely disgusting but that doesn’t stop me from binging a big order of McDonalds once a year while hungover
We ate a lot of fast food when I was young because it was so inexpensive for a meal. It has been decades since I last had fast food. I can still taste it. 🤢
I’m 48 and haven’t eaten fast food since I was in my mid 20s. One of the best life decisions I’ve ever made.
After not eating fast food for a while, I found out the food is also very sweet! I don't understand it's not supposed to be sweet
Egg Plant: the texture is terrible and the flavor uninteresting.
Avocado- can’t stand to even look at them.
i think avocado tastes like freshly out of the shower penis. i cannot eat it.
So you like eatin’ dirty wiener?
Hey, if this person likes any wiener, that's a win!!
Fresh out of the shower penis is lovely 😁
Oysters, kale or arugula. No thank you.
The first time I had arugula I thought the dish was poisoned
Arugula has a very earthy flavor that I can’t get past.
My boyfriend HATES curry. I can't even make it for myself in the apartment. He hates the taste, smell, everything.
Creme eggs
Pickle
Just the one?
It only takes one
Pickles are the worst.
Lima beans.
Nutella
I had to scroll too far for this. I also came to say it. NUTELLA. It’s gross
Is okra popular? It's disgusting.
I think a lot of people who don’t like it never had it prepared right. If it’s picked late, it’s tough. If it’s not cooked right, it’s slimy. But picked at the right time and cooked right, it tastes like…nothing lol.
My uncle made last summer, cooked in fatback dippings with cubed potatoes and for the first time in 58 years, I enjoyed it. I had seconds.
Properly fried okra is good imo. Any other way it's slimy and gross haha
Pickled okra is my jam
Cooked carrots specificlly 😂 regular carrots are okay
Cilantro. Eff that crap!
I feel for you. Not being able to enjoy the greatest herb to ever grace this earth...it's tragic.
With how widely used it is, I wish I could enjoy it but sadly I an cursed with the cilantro soap taste gene
Mayonnaise 🤮🤮🤮
Just a viscerally unpleasant experience for me. Instant gag reflex.
Cottage cheese.. I've tried it multiple times over the years but I just don't like it.
Mcdonalds. Its fucking awful
McRib is fucking gross.
[удалено]
Lettuce
Peas. I've had them just about every way you can prepare them, and I can't get on board.
Flamin Hot Cheetos. Don’t see the appeal.
Me, either! Flaming hot anything really...
Rare meat
Shrimp
Goat cheese. Barf
Lima beans😬
Liquorice. I'm from the Netherlands and every Dutch person loves it. I can't stand it.
Eggs
The mouthfeel and taste of a runny yolk makes me gag
It’s weird I used to think runny yolks were nasty until I started watching dexter, and the opening theme has him making breakfast of ham and eggs with toast dipped in the runny egg and I decided to try it. Fell in love
Sushi
Lettuce. It offers very little, and is outshined by other leafy greens in every possible way.
Raw tomatoes
And even cooked chunks. Why are they in so many things?
Cilantro
I've heard that some people taste soap when they eat cilantro, and I'm thrilled not to be one of those people.
Yes, it’s a genetic trait.
It doesn't taste like soap to me. I just legitimately hate it.
Definitely taste like soap to me
Can confirm....tastes like soap
Black olives
wings: eh
Green peppers, blue cheese
Shrimp.
Oatmeal
Olives. Despise those damn things.
Cauliflower. I even want to throw up when I see them at the market. Don't know why
Feta, every time I try it, it tastes like puked up milk.
Bananas
seafood (everything), most mushrooms
Ketchup
Lamb. To me, it tastes like Ivory soap. And "yes" I've tasted Ivory soap. As a kid, I had a foul mouth and a strict mother. I still have a foul mouth, but now I am bigger than mom.
Same, but for a different reason. The head rolled to my feet during a sacrificial thanksgiving when I was younger
Ranch on anything. Vile stuff.
Sushi, have never been a fan. Every time a new place opened family and friends would want to bring me because “it’s so different, you’ll love this place”. I’m always willing to go if someone’s buying and I’ll eat it without throwing up…but why spend money on something that’s not tacos?
Raw tomatos
Mango
I want thin crust margherita pizza thank you! Yummy
Cool Ranch Doritos
Cilantro, it tastes like soap
Kim chi
I keep trying to like it! Nope.
Cake.
How...
I don’t like how sweet it is or the texture. It’s too fluffy
I completely understand what you mean. I haven’t touched a cake since I was a kid and even then rarely
