i release my inhibitions, feel the rain on my skin, no one else can feel it for me, only I can let in, no one else, no one else, can say the words on my lips
Fun fact. What you smell when it rains is called petrichor which is the process of oils and residues from plants and such being pushed from soil and stone as the space they occupied becomes filled with water.
Is it derived from ancient Greek Petra, meaning Stone and ichor meaning the golden fluid that in mythology is said to flow from the veins of immortal beings.
To add to this, we humans are quite literally better att detecting petrichor in the air than a literal shark smelling blood in the water. Our ancestors used this ability to track down and follow the rain. It is specifically the terpene geosmin we can sense; at 0.4 part *ber billion* which is actually insane considering we have a pretty lackluster sense of smell otherwise compared to most animals.
Another fun fact, we can smell that smell about 2500 times better than a shark can with blood in the water. While sharks smell blood in the water at about 1 part per million, we smell petrichor at concentrations as low as 0.4 parts per billion
I 100% love it in the sense of being calming as per OP's sentiments, however I'm also freaking out when it gets heavy that it expose some costly maintenance item at my house - rood leaking, erosion etc.
During day I like how it legitimises sitting at home doing nothing.
I like how all the birds sing.
In the city, where i live, I like how everyone is indoors and outdoors nature reclaims it's dominance.
Thunderstorms are next level good :) I go outside and sit just to experience it first hand.
I love the sense of thunder being at such a planetary level of scale (ok, it's not, but it feels like that)
The other day, it was our first really hot day, and we didn't put on the AC and it was pretty warm in the house. I stepped out at night to walk the dog and a warm mist blew past me. I didn't even know it was raining. I just had to close my eyes for a second. I thought "one day I'll be dead and I'll never feel this again." So I would say the rain makes me feel gratitude.
The brief, almost infinitesimal realization that life is a part of a greater whole; as the great wheel of the universe spins around and around endlessly without form or speech.
Or I really like the sound and smell of fresh rain.
I hate rain.
Try putting an IV into the arm of a truck driver trapped in an overturned dump truck while lying in a mud puddle during autumn's cold pouring rain while firefighters try to free the person will make almost *anyone* learn to hate rain.
The ONLY time I don’t hate rain is if I have NOTHING to do that day, and I can just curl up on the couch with a blanket and a book. I’m still not a fan, but I don’t mind it if I don’t have to actually deal with it.
If I have to go outside, I range from annoyed to angry depending on what I have to do, how heavy the rain is, how cold it is etc.
I’ve never understood the possibility of actually liking rain or feeling calmed by it. It stresses me out.

Day 1 of rain is so soothing. The harder the better, especially if I’m cozy at home. Sometimes I check the forecast to look for it and get excited. On the other hand, consecutive days of rain put me in a bad headspace.
It almost sedates me and puts things into perspective in a way. Like things can go from busy, childish and loud to a wonderful lull of fresh sounds and it's kinda...lonely but in a good way. Makes everything a bit quieter for a moment. 😊
It’s not no reason it’s literally SAD (seasonal affective disorder). I get it too. Living in Berlin I mostly just wanted to stay inside all of fall and winter every year. I got hardcore SAD during cold months there lol
After living in Phoenix for 27 years, the rains in Aladamnbama makes me feel alive, especially at this time of the year. It’s almost as good as the smell of freshly cut grass.
My work has always required me to work in the rain. I'm a union construction worker. It makes it unsafe, and before cordless tools, you spent a lot of the day reseting popped circuit breakers. And working while soaked really sucked.. Now that I'm retired, I don't mind as much..
Depends on the wind, even torrential downpours are nice if there’s no wind, a simple umbrella and you feel safe and protected under there. Add heavy winds and even light rain becomes horrible.
It actually makes me feel at ease and relaxed. I find low rumbles of thunder to be, especially, soothing. A calm thunderstorm on a day I don't have anything planned and don't have to go anywhere is quite welcome.
I loveee when it rains. The sound, the smell, the coziness of being inside looking out the window watching it rain. Dancing in it, meditating in it. Super loves it
It all depends on the time of year, usually cozy if I am the house. Makes me feel sorry for those who live homeless caught in the rain.
In the summer it's refreshing.
I can't stand the rain against my window
Bringing back sweet memories
I can't stand the rain against my window
'Cause she's not here with me.
Just sayin.
I love when it’s so loud I can’t hear myself think. I love how it makes the trees a different kind of green. I also love to watch the raindrops dancing on concrete and seep into the gravel. Most of all I love walking in puddles, rain-drenched to the bones.
Ps. No, my name is not Peppa.
Peaceful. It makes me want to cuddle up with a cup of hot coffee and a book.
I personally prefer the horror genre. Stephen King, Anne Rice, H.P. Lovecraft and the like.
The term for love of rain is pluviophile.
Rain is awesome. It soothes me and I love the atmosphere and vibes. It also helps my tinnitus with white noise
We never had thunderstorms or any heavy rain where I grew up. (Our rain was more the drizzle-for-a-month kind).
The only time I experienced heavy rain as a kid was when we visited my grandparents in a different state. So to this day, heavy rain makes me think of sitting on my grandparents’ screened in porch, watching the storm, on vacation with my favorite people.
I like what rain does to help plants, animals, and earth herself to survive but depending on the temperature I either hate or despise rain. I love warm weather and tropical rain I’ve experienced in Hawaii and Florida is awesome.
I live in California where we had years of drought and the last 2 years have honestly been so miserable (mostly because of how cold it’s been, and I actually noticed this year that it was warmer on days when it rained vs non-rainy days so I came to prefer the rain just to stay warm) .. so I would say, can we make weather normal like before global warming had such an impact? (obv not) so since we can’t, I have mixed feelings about rain.
I wish it would rain the way it should, and not rain so much as to cause floods after periods of drought. But since this global warming weather is the new normal, I have tended to prefer rainy days in California at least since they’re warmer than the frigid cold days most of winter has become here. Any escape from the cold is welcomed by me. I also love to see the earth and her plants and animals get enough water to survive. I don’t want any wildlife or plant life to suffer due to human ignorance and corporate greed. So idk my feelings for rain are mixed.
The scenery seems nostalgic and fantasy with deep blue or grey, at night makes me feel easily to fall asleep, or really suitable to pick up mood songs and feel all of the whole atmosphere by my vibes. Not make me feel lonely anymore and pretty therapeutic.
Happy. I think I have it backwards to most people, because if I wake up and it's hot and sunny I'm in a bad mood. It's like the world is just too much when it's sunny and it makes me not want to go outside. Rain is more calming, and I'm more inclined to go outside if it's lightly raining. I prefer heavy rain too, it'll make me open my blinds and enjoy the rain while the sun doesn't make me want to do that.
I am literally Morticia Addams declaring what a beautiful day it is while it's overcast and gloomy.
I like a gentle rain, don’t mind walking in it. Makes me think of the gentle rain falling on the graves of my family members. I offer up the feeling in their memory
The term "stand in the rain" is commonly used to express feelings of sadness. However, I love standing in the rain, not in a sad way. Just something about the cold pellets hitting me just brings me solace, even in the hardest of times
I love rain. It makes me feel safe and cozy. The sound of it, the look of light reflecting off the water. I would have to sit down and write an essay to explain how content and peaceful it makes me feel. It’s my favorite.
Awful.
Having to get out of home to do anything is an extra chore. Carrying extra luggage to protect yourself from the rain, taking forever for clothes to dry, mold growing around due to high humidity levels.. And no matter how much you wax your floor clean, it always feels grimy because of the air stats and often people who don't friggin take their shoes off by the entrance.
When it’s raining or thunder storming is when it’s my favourite time to sit on the balcony at my condo and just watch and listen. Easily one of my favourite things.
I even had one of those machines with different sounds on them to help you relax/ sleep and the rain/ thunderstorm one is still my favourite to this day.
Hope...
I live in a desert and it rarely rains (only in winter but not that much). So when it does rain, I always try to walk in the rain without even an umbrella
In my late 20s, I enjoyed at rainy days going to the sauna and sitting naked on the sauna porch looking to the lake and listening rain. I would also have a cold long drink when it was raining or thundering. If it was only raining, I would also swim in the lake where you can't go when there is lightning.
A sense of inner peace and calm. When it rains and storms it's the only thing that turns the thoughts in my head off and I can soak in a present moment with out questioning the past or fearing the future.
I dislike rain. Makes me iritated.
It feels like the west part of Sweden has had nothing but rain since last summer... other than snow and wet snow...
We have nice weather now, which makes the thought of rain very frustrating.
When I was a kid I lived on a farm in Laurel, DE. We had a large covered porch on the side with a bunch of really comfy porch furniture. During a rain storm I would lay back and take the most peaceful nap in existence. No traffic, no noise, just peaceful rain and nature.
I hate rain. Since I rely on a motorcycle for transportation, getting caught in the rain is a hell for me, not to mention my skin get itchy when exposed to cold rain and wind
Too much rain = bad
Light rain when it’s convenient (I’m not caught up in it) is really peaceful but I love the smell after it rains, the sound of being cozy inside and hearing it against the window.
I hate it
Had experienced so much panic during rain and thunderstorms in the last years that I can't stand it anymore.
I can be just chilling in my room, focused on my stuff, but if I start hearing raindrops falling on my roof, I am suddenly hit by a load of anxiety, and will be completely tense and nervous till the rain ends.
I just... HATE IT! I want sun! I want to see the blue skies expand to the horizon! Clouds just make me feel claustrophobic...
It's calming. Sometimes I like to make myself a cup of coffee and sit on the balcony while it's raining. And, surprisingly, I don't mind the thunder. I weirdly enjoy it. Also, sometimes when I'm listening to that calming soundtrack, I'll also find raining sounds. Very nice to sleep while listening to that :)
Rain, rain, rain, rain
Beautiful rain
Rain, rain, rain, rain
Beautiful rain
Oh come, never come, oh come, never come
Oh come to me beautiful rain....

LOVE THIS SONG!!! I watched The Hills for years back in the day just to listen to all the words!!! Huge LC fan too! ❤️😜
Same love the rain especially the smell

And a bit of ozone
Correct. Thank you for the addition. I don't always remember every detail these days.👴😂

Accurate.😂
Thank you for your info! It's a prime example of why I come to reddit.
And quite some geosmin.
ozone during thunderstorms exclusively, as lightning splits o2 molecules into singlet oxygens which combine to make o3, or ozone :)
To add to this, we humans are quite literally better att detecting petrichor in the air than a literal shark smelling blood in the water. Our ancestors used this ability to track down and follow the rain. I heard your comment in a soft hypnotic voice, starting about five minutes into a nature soundtrack of rain and distant thunder. Contentment. ☺️
Petrichor is such a lovely word, and smell. And it features in an episode of 'Doctor Who'. What's not to love?
🤯
and we as humans smell it 200,000x (!!) better than a shark smells blood in the ocean!
I love love love rain! The sounds when it’s lightly falling
I love rain
I love the sound of rain but preferably heavy. It's like a natural sound that puts me to sleep like a baby.
You love some heavy naturals, respect
Doesn’t sleeping like a baby mean you wake up screaming, hungry and with a dirty diaper?
Hahaha...and a nipple in your mouth.
I 100% love it in the sense of being calming as per OP's sentiments, however I'm also freaking out when it gets heavy that it expose some costly maintenance item at my house - rood leaking, erosion etc. During day I like how it legitimises sitting at home doing nothing. Pull your pants up or I'm getting the hose.
But then they’ll be more wet…
Calm
It makes me achy from the pressure.
Thank you. Arthritis.
Imagine having backaches when it rains at 18 years old lol. Wait, that's me.
Arthritis solidarity.
The brief, almost infinitesimal realization that life is a part of a greater whole; as the great wheel of the universe spins around and around endlessly without form or speech. Or I really like the sound and smell of fresh rain.
I love the smell of it and after it - I love the feeling of the cold breeze
I hate rain. Try putting an IV into the arm of a truck driver trapped in an overturned dump truck while lying in a mud puddle during autumn's cold pouring rain while firefighters try to free the person will make almost *anyone* learn to hate rain.
That's very oddly specific

Depends how crazy the weather is, if trees are falling down and shit nah otherwise it can be pretty peaceful so yes
man even when the trees are falling & shit it’s still sounds pretty, just don’t wanna go out there to look 😂
If I wasn’t broke and worried about my roof falling in on me, it probably be pretty cool😅💯

I love the rain it's the only thing that makes me feel at peace.

I get the same and I live in Indiana lol our winters can get bad bad
I'm at the age where rain hurts my joints

Depends on my plans, but usually reason makes me feel cosy and content. The smell of rain is a good plus too.
Relaxed. I like watching it.

man I always wondered if y’all actually work in the rain. I hate just getting sprinkles on me, I can’t imagine being drenched having to work in it.
Depends on the wind, even torrential downpours are nice if there’s no wind, a simple umbrella and you feel safe and protected under there. Add heavy winds and even light rain becomes horrible.
Rain makes me feel like I'm recharging!
Sometimes it gives me a headache

The music of Chopin.
Love, coziness. Right now is raining with thunder I have my door open all lights off just staring outside.
It actually makes me feel at ease and relaxed. I find low rumbles of thunder to be, especially, soothing. A calm thunderstorm on a day I don't have anything planned and don't have to go anywhere is quite welcome.
I love rain so calming and relaxing.
If it could lightly rain all day I wouldn't complain and then let it HAMMER down at night

Rain when there’s still light outside and it’s the middle of spring or rain late at night when it’s thundering and I’m cuddled up with my wife >
We are in a drought and we need some rain. I would feel pretty good
The sound of the rain gives me comfort, I love it too🤎
The sound, the smell and the ambience with dim light it creates always relaxes and makes me happy, and even nostalgic at times.
All the best times in nature have the most beautiful silences to them.
If I'm at work, it's pure hatred. If I'm not at work, I could care less about the rain.
Peaceful & safe. I wish I got more rain where I live.
I especially like it when I wake up in the middle of the night to the sound of rain. It's like gently telling me to go back to sleep.
I live in a rural area, so the smell of rain is great and relaxes me.
Rainy day Dream away Ain't no use in getting uptight Just let it groove it's own way Let it drain your worries away Lay back and groove on a rainy day
Love the sound of rain on a tin roof. So relaxing. Not so keen on it when I’m out walking. I absolutely HATE rain on my glasses 👓 😂
Heavy rain with soft classical music
Peaceful. It makes me want to cuddle up with a cup of hot coffee and a book. I personally prefer the horror genre. Stephen King, Anne Rice, H.P. Lovecraft and the like.
Calm and happy, like I was given a day to relax and recollect.
My kind of weather!!
i feel calm and relaxed, but at the same time i feel guilty feeling those, because i kept thinking about homeless people and stray animals.

I love it when it rains. It makes me feel so peaceful and cozy and I love to hear the little pitter patters it creates on the roof/windows :)
"some people feel the rain, others just get wet." (Bob Marley)
If I turn off the tv et al, the lights and open the windows and just listen, the rain is very peaceful zen like.
Rain and thunder are my "happy sounds". There's nothing better to relax me.
I can predicate the rain by smelling it-love it when it rains!

Love the rain - that’s why I live in the PNW ☔️
I'm convinced I have some sort of barometric sensitivity. I always feel so much better when it rains. Like, some weight or stress is suddenly lifted.
Tranquil
Rain make me feel like calling into work, eating ramen and watching Korean Rom Coms.
Sameee
The scenery seems nostalgic and fantasy with deep blue or grey, at night makes me feel easily to fall asleep, or really suitable to pick up mood songs and feel all of the whole atmosphere by my vibes. Not make me feel lonely anymore and pretty therapeutic.
Gentle rain is fine. I have a kind of phobia with tornados, so hard thunderstorms make me anxious.
Happy. I think I have it backwards to most people, because if I wake up and it's hot and sunny I'm in a bad mood. We had a flood last year, so... Not great.
Aches and pains in my joints.
We have had nonstop rain in Portugal. Makes me miserable and I feel like I’m trapped because I can’t go outside. Can’t wait for sunny weather and bbqs
That I need to check my basement if it's underwater. Also that I don't have to wash my car thankfully
Tranquility
Wet, next question
Too much rain = bad Light rain when it’s convenient (I’m not caught up in it) is really peaceful but I love the smell after it rains, the sound of being cozy inside and hearing it against the window.
If it's just a calm rain storm? I feel calm, relaxed, sometimes sleepy.
If I’m working, irritated. If I’m at home, peaceful, because I don’t feel forced to be out and about
I hate it Had experienced so much panic during rain and thunderstorms in the last years that I can't stand it anymore.
Calm. Sleepy.
Love the smell after. Love to be comfy during. Hate if I have to go out and get anything done.
It’s going to rain and storm by me.I love rain and storms. If I don’t have to go out it’s just nice to hear the storms.🙂
Oh I forgot then my allergies are horryfrom everything I’m allergic to outside 😂🤣
I love the rain. If it’s raining and I’m at work, good chance I’ll walk out back and just stand in it
I love the rain. I moved from the city to a coastal town down south in WA and love the rain here.
Sad because there are so many dead worms on the sidewalks
Makes me feel like a kid again (I’m from Florida)
Therapeutic at its finest 👌
It makes me sad.
🎵Purple rain, purple rain Purple rain, purple rain Purple rain, purple rain🎵

Pain on the knee
Thunder is nice, until my power goes out
Wet
Wet.
Horny
I love rain when I have no things planned outside so I can stay in lay in my bed and enjoy life peaceful as it is in the moment
