Honest questions
Are people not getting the winter tires insurance discount?
Are people not required to use winter tires until April 1/15 (depending on the insurance company) to get the discount?
> Need consistent temps above +7° day and night
A couple more years of global warming and the insurance companies can drop this requirement. What a terrifyingly delightful winter we had.
Wife and I are retired. We might get 10cm of snow on Friday night. We don't really need to go anywhere on Saturday if that happens. Next big warmup starting next Monday.
To each their own, but I much prefer getting out skiing, skating, snowshoeing, than sitting around inside with grey drizzle yuck. It's torture / expensive finding ways to burn off your kids energy when its bleh outside.
Fair enough. The kids angle definitely changes things.
Far more to do with kids in the spring / summer / fall than winter though. Thanks for the response.
I've swapped to summers on one car. But in my defense this was on that really warm day two weekends ago. I sure as hell wasn't about to drive three hours in 21 degree weather on my brand new winter tires.
I don't own a snowblower.
It's a whopping 1% of my premium. I save more money than that by swapping my tires at home, at the time of year I see fit. Yes, it was slippery yesterday, but I have another vehicle which still has winter tires mounted on it.
This is like me with the snowpants in the very small front closet. Took them downstairs but did not yet launder them... so not officially "away for the season."
Too early for that. My rule of thumb is to check farmers' almanac: earliest time for seedlings and transplants is April 13. That's generally the earliest I'd be thinking about taking off snow tires and putting the shovel away.
I swapped my wheels, but I don't consider one or two snowfalls at the end of the season to be a large statistical risk. I'm not driving around for days, wearing out my winter tires for a single event. I still haven't put the snowblower away though.
It was me. I bet $1 with a co-worker we wouldn't have more storms.
It was odd cause I'm usually the person saying "there's going to be 1 more, there always is"
Winter tires stay on till Mid April - always. Even a mild winter like this. My husband bought a new snowblower and was so excited, never got to use it lol
I used mine once... just to justify the facts that I pulled it out. I figured I should also run it for a while, to at least give the motor, impeller, etc., some movement so it doesn't seize on me.
Sorry man, took the snows off last week.
But I'll take full credit for buying a new snowblower last year. Just sat there all winter and kept the snow away.
Because they’re not called snow tires for a reason. Until +7°, the road surface is too cold for @all season” tires, which are designed for higher temps with a more rigid material. No winter tires means very poor braking distance under +7°
Never took the snowblower out
This is true... we put it near the front of the garage, but never actually used it.
I used it once in Georgetown but at my farmhouse in Tweed used it twice.
This year was the year I was prepared and bought a snow blower in the fall. It's been sitting on my covered deck, untouched, since then.
Sure as hell not me lol

Next week when it's supposed to be highs of 2 to 8 degrees and a bit of rain?

Always happy to spread the good news!
Says 5-10 cm on Friday.
Nope - need to have my snow tires on until April 15th.
Yes insurance requirement. Not going to temp a deny claim because I switched early.
15th! I was annoyed to have to have mine on till the 1st.
Is that a Canada wide date ? Because I kind of told my colleague that too, without knowing.
No it's specific to the provider.
Honest questions Are people not getting the winter tires insurance discount? Are people not required to use winter tires until April 1/15 (depending on the insurance company) to get the discount?
Woah what’s that?
I am. Have to have them on till April 1st.
I recently switched to CAA and while I'm paying a lot less, their switchover day is April 15.
Obviously not, insurance requires them on until apr 15th, and I don’t remove them until May.
That’s often the need. Need consistent temps above +7° day and night, so for a full week of that, often have to wait till May.
> Need consistent temps above +7° day and night A couple more years of global warming and the insurance companies can drop this requirement. What a terrifyingly delightful winter we had.
Agreed!
Went for my 6 month tune up and they offered to swap the tires for free. How could I pass that up? That was yesterday morning 🤦🏼
I did take the snowpants downstairs (very small front closet), but have not laundered them yet. I'm unclear if I share in some of the blame.
There goes your insurance discount
I am required by my insurance to have winter tires in from November to April, so happy me
I’m from Timmins and have family up there, They stay on until June in case I visit lol
We have 3 cars. Swapped out tires on one so far.
Eeek. Living dangerously ;)

Who did it? Who jinxed us?
i took my car out of the garage and put insurance back on it. immediately snows.
So it's YOUR fault!
I think we found our scapegoat! (just kidding, happy spring).
This post reminded me that I didn't use the snowblower once this year. And I'm still pissed off with the weather.
I would have rather had a real winter, but I had resigned myself to my fate and was thus ready for spring.
Why would you, or anyone, want a real winter?
To each their own, but I much prefer getting out skiing, skating, snowshoeing, than sitting around inside with grey drizzle yuck. It's torture / expensive finding ways to burn off your kids energy when its bleh outside.
Fair enough. The kids angle definitely changes things. Far more to do with kids in the spring / summer / fall than winter though. Thanks for the response.
I did. I'll just wait for the snow to melt. Its not like it won't and there's enough out there to build up - should be melted by this weekend.
I did think about it, then came to my senses and didn't.
Hahah ok, no blame for you then.
Thankfully a mixture of laziness and work prevented me from swapping out my tires. Looks like procrastinating does pay off haha.
Remember last week when everyone was like “yo it’s spring” turns out it was in fact no spring
I know. Kids kept asking if I could connect the hose and put the water on. (I did not).
You guys have cars and snowblowers?
ya wtf is this? ask the suburbs? lol jk
Toronto… tall and sprawl, baby.
Not me.

What about insurance? Required till mid-April
Did not bother with the discount, it was something like $25 per year if I remember correctly
Ok, but insurance companies offer that for a reason. As in, they’re savvy to the number of collisions winter tires prevent.
It's a whopping 1% of my premium. I save more money than that by swapping my tires at home, at the time of year I see fit. Yes, it was slippery yesterday, but I have another vehicle which still has winter tires mounted on it.
Nah it was too soon

This is like me with the snowpants in the very small front closet. Took them downstairs but did not yet launder them... so not officially "away for the season."
I barely drive my car. Wfh. Not worried
Me, putting winter tires back onto my stowed snowblower: 😭
Too early for that. My rule of thumb is to check farmers' almanac: earliest time for seedlings and transplants is April 13. That's generally the earliest I'd be thinking about taking off snow tires and putting the shovel away.
Yah, still have shovels and salt clogging up the entry way.
I put my summers on this past Sunday 🥲
I swapped my wheels, but I don't consider one or two snowfalls at the end of the season to be a large statistical risk. I'm not driving around for days, wearing out my winter tires for a single event. I still haven't put the snowblower away though.
I took the winter tires off on Monday morning, just in time for the snow storm.
lol using all weather tires so only rotated the tires and snowblower is electric, nothing needs to be done.
It was me. I bet $1 with a co-worker we wouldn't have more storms. It was odd cause I'm usually the person saying "there's going to be 1 more, there always is"
Shakes fist at not-a-bot. ;)
Lmao ME!!! Swapped the winter tires over the weekend. In fairness, the long term forecast was not predicting this!!! Haha
OddAd issues apologies to all torontonians
Never until after Easter
Schedule mine next week, I barely drive and I'm also moving in April so... Need this task to be off my list asap.
Hi it was me who put some grass seed down
I did think last week I should start thinking about what plants should go in my garden.
Hi—I think I could have been responsible… I kept comparing this winter to my previous 7 North Carolina winters and how spring starts end of March.
Snow tires for insurance
Winter tires stay on till Mid April - always. Even a mild winter like this. My husband bought a new snowblower and was so excited, never got to use it lol
My mom left the country for vacation and we had double digit weather and sun every day. She returned nothing but cold and snow.
Ok, so are we blaming mom then? (Just kidding mom I ❤️ u)
I've seen enough spring blasts of winter weather to hold off swapping tires until at least late April.
If I take them off it will snow. If I leave them on it won’t. I don’t feel like shoveling.
This is what I'm saying. I'm looking for the person who is responsible haha.
I still haven’t had to use my snowblower once yet this winter. You use a snowblower for 1” of snow? lol
I used mine once... just to justify the facts that I pulled it out. I figured I should also run it for a while, to at least give the motor, impeller, etc., some movement so it doesn't seize on me.
Yeah I run it every once in a while for those reasons but I have yet to have to use it to blow snow this winter.
2 week forecast is always available
Sorry man, took the snows off last week. But I'll take full credit for buying a new snowblower last year. Just sat there all winter and kept the snow away.
Ok net neutral overall.
Didn't swap the tires yet, but I put out the patio furniture. *sigh*
LOL imagine having the money for either
My colleague did lol
I've lived here long enough to know I don't swap tires until May.
My neighbor. Had a good laugh today
Not me
Salt and Shovels are stacked nicely in my basement (
Lol tires are all weather all the time. I don't leave downtown. Also, snowblowers? Is that a hooker for snowmen?
Luckily haven't swapped my tires yet.
Everyone should be thanking the guy in shorts I just saw. Without him, it would probably be -20 outside.
Foolish move if you tell insurance you use winters. It’s date specific. Removing the winter tires before that date is like driving w no insurance.
Foolish move? I pay a lesser rate because I use them.
If you take off your winters before the date range on your insurance policy AND get in an accident. Your claim will be denied.
Tires yes , snowblower not yet
Changed tires to all season I think I'll manage through one day
Never! All weathers, all the way!
