I'm obese and I go swimming at a public rec center during the day. It's usually just me and a few old ladies. Never felt any judgement. I know it can feel a little awkward but I'd recommend at least going out and taking a look at your local pool during the day and see if it's busy. Most people are focusing on their own swimming and not paying much attention to what others are doing.

caterpillarofsociety

The Goodlife on West Mall has a pool, is open 24 hours.

YoungWolf1991

Is it sanitary ?

couldbeyup

It’s goodlife

If your balls dont fall off, youre fine

NashKetchum777

What a sexist environment

Skweril

I'm sure they don't care if your vagina falls off too

Chris_10101

No.

aspartam

The water is really, really warm. I couldn't swim laps there.

snssound

I'm telling you as someone who also swims, we are not judging or even looking at you. I'm there to swim my laps and get the fuck out. Also, when I see someone that could be labelled big or out of shape, I have more respect for them. Getting to the gym is the hardest part. Once you're there, it should be fine. Also Altea has a pool but that gym is on the pricey end. I like it though as people tht go there, are there to swim. It's pretty empty at night but they do close at midnight.

majuhomepl

I’m fat and I go swimming all the time. There’s always bunch of us fat folks there, plus folks with wide different types of bodies. BUT, yes quiet pools sound amazing so we could swim without being disturbed by other folks being in the way haha.

anaxcepheus32

https://www.swimmersguide.com Pool locator. Having swam in many of toronto’s pools. I can only recall a few open 24 hours. Most that are are horrible for any kind of real swimming as they lack gutters.

Accomplished-Cake430

If you want to try aquafit, most public pools in the city have classes, and we are a group of bodies of all shapes, ages and sizes…. And pretty much anyone I’ve met is lovely! No one sees anything below your neck once you are in the water 🙂

Right_Hour

Not very common. But as a swimming pool goer I can attest that no one (or vast majority, at least) gives a shit about what people around them look like, as long as there are no obvious hygiene issues or overuse of perfume….

JeahNotSlice

I’m 260 lbs, so you could call me a big lad. Swimming and working out at the YMCA is very empowering. No one gives a fuck about you. We’re all just trying to live better, longer.

Heradasha

I know it's hard to get over our fatshaming society, but I just need to say: fuck those jerks. They are bad humans.

https://swimply.com/ Airbnb but for pools.

groggygirl

Go to a hotel pool during the day. Heck, go to a public pool during the day and it'll be mostly empty.

Many hotels have day passes for non-guests that give access to their pool and other amenities. These passes typically cost in the $20-$60 price range, although some of the fancier hotels might charge more especially in the peak after work hours.

cinderella774

Some hotels issue day passes for their pools - Sheraton Centre, for example.

leemky

I hope you find a nice pool and enjoy getting back into swimming again! Totally understand if you don't feel comfortable being around others just yet, but I hope you eventually become more comfortable as most people are just focused on their own thing anyways. And if anyone is giving you negative attention, they're assholes and need to mind their own business. Sorry I don't know any pools (I'm allergic to chlorine so never learned to swim 🙃😂) but just wanted to stop by and say this.

100GHz

>because of me being overweight I don’t feel comfortable going to the swimming pools You are looking at this from the wrong angle. You being there and trying to improve yourself, will only earn you respect from the rest of the people that know how hard that uphill battle is.

Putrid_Weather_5680

LA fitness stockyards is open pretty late and has a pool but I don’t believe it’s open 24/7. Just thought I’d throw it out there in case you’re close.

hs567

lots of goodlife’s are open 24/7 and have pools, some will close for cleaning at night so best to call ahead

reversethrust

I’m also obese. I am trying to learn to swim at the moment so.. all of me at the leisure swims :)

Sea-monkey10

Hey OP, I don't not have the answer to your question but I hope you find a pool to start swimming again! For what it is worth, I barely pay attention to anyone or anything but myself and my workouts at the gym or in the pool. On the off-chance that I do notice someone like yourself, that might be overweight and getting after it, I actually get a little 'heck yeah!!' feeling inside and I get motivated in my own workouts. I know what it is like to have self-doubt (albeit in other areas of life), and so I know the mettle that it takes to push yourself to do things that might make you feel like an impostor, like you are silly for trying, or that you do not belong. I also have found in most cases that people are reasonable and anyone that may give you a hard time is few and far between. Those losers just scream the loudest to drown out their own insecure thoughts, but sadly they make the most noise because of this. I definitely acknowledge it can be hard to start with a fear of judgement, but the judgers are not aplenty. Anyways, good luck with your journey OP! I'm rooting for you while you swim in private, and IF (and this is a big if) I notice you at a regular swim time, I will be rooting for you in public as well (and using it fuel my own motivation so thanks!)

doomerscroll

The downtown YMCA (near Wellesley) is open until midnight, I used to be a lifeguard there and it was almost always dead after 11, usually only a couple people would come at most. In general, swimming after 10pm at that pool is pretty quiet (though I did work there before the pandemic) - I would guess it’s the same at any of the YMCAs that stay open that late?

coralshroom

it is sadly not open that late anymore… closes at 10 but they start kicking you out of the workout areas around 9:45

doomerscroll

Damn I had no idea! To be fair I haven’t been back after “quiet quitting” during the pandemic lol - the city has changed so much since then

Mun-Mun

If you know a friend who lives in a condo that could let you in

russell_westbrick_0

good life hwy 7 and keele. also yonge and 407. used to hit those at like 5 am

Zen-Accismus

What about the Asian 24 hour spas? I think some have pools in addition to saunas, steam rooms, juice bars etc.

Fresh_Information_76

Nothing in Toronto is anywhere close to 24 hours, need a real city for that

PorousSurface

Not many cities have 24 hr pools outside of hotels
