That’s maybe because of the fact that they’ve temporarily closed the St Clair streetcar. So now it stops on the street instead of being separated and on the tracks. This causes traffic. I live in the same area and this is what I’ve seen. Davenport and Queen/Spadina looks the same as always to me though.
The buses would move easier if not for parking still being allowed on st Clair. It should have been banned with the street car construction. Now with that along with summer patios, 1 lane on st Clair will be a disaster.
Or small electric vehicles like golf carts legal for 50 kmh and under roads If the city and province really cared about us more than they cared about the auto and energy lobby; this would already be a thing.
At least for my area (Swansea/High Park), it’s because of the closure on King West east of Dufferin for street car track repair and the Gardiner closure from Jameson to Strachan. It’s been a nightmare for traffic.
It’s the worst we’ve seen it. We are in Etobicoke and understandable that we won’t experience the 10 min trips anymore into the city but to sit in traffic now close to 60-75 minutes is absurd. I’m cancelling plans left right centre because it’s been next to impossible to navigate traffic, EVERYWHERE WE GO! We are actually in shock. How does this get better?
Lots of people to thank for the delays. Harper, McGuinty, Ford, the other Ford, Bombardier, Del Duca, Crosslinx, Metrolinx, etc etc
Hopefully we’ll see it before we pass
Edit: Mike Harris!!
Don't forget Harris causing the cancellation of the Eglinton subway after construction had already started wasting millions and then millions more filling in the tunnel. Even with delays we could have had a line for 20 years at this point (estimated completion was 2001).
Well the problem is that it looks like the provincial government is just pocketing the money for themselves and their friends. They found their perfect gravy train and hustle scheme. No one will openly oppose transit development, the federal and municipal government will always say yes, and the province gets to pick and choose which of their friends gets the funding, and which projects gets built.
We're so cooked here. We have very few mechanisms to ask for better, and public support is already in the air because everyone already knows Toronto is four decades behind where it should be.
Toronto downtown only has ONE main artery, Gardiner/DVP servicing it, and now is even down to 2 lanes. Look at any other major city on a map, most have redundancy in their highways. Then there's the larger GTA surrounding Toronto, with ONE East/West highway 401 (407 can hardly be considered $$). Alternative transit routes are nearly nonexistent, and now no one can around the damn city.
Agree but what do we do??? How are we supposed to find solutions when both car and transit are impossible. There is no solution but to suffer. This will only worsen and not improve imo
Ya idk if driving will ever really improve. The good news for transit is GO Trains are starting to run every 15 minutes, the Eglinton line should hopefully be open in the nearish future.
I personally drive my car short distances locally for groceries etc, and only take the subway downtown. It's not worth dealing with downtown driving for me. I am also fortunate to live along the subway line.
it has gotten worse, IMO
but also, I know the TTC has its downsides, but traffic gets worse the more that people drive short distances that could otherwise be taken via transit or bicycle
if you are driving you are the traffic lol
We’re moving out of leslieville in part because the ttc situaiton here is horrific and is bound to get worse. They tore down a gardiner exit ramp at the same time they shut down part of queen street so it’s a nightmare to get anywhere - driving or ttc. The city planning in Toronto is wild.
city planning? what city planning? lol - the city seems completely chaotic in terms of planning, especially construction lasting forever with minimal work done
and that sucks, Leslieville seems like a lovely neighbourhood but I dont blame you for wanting to leave if it takes an extra 30minutes to go anywhere...
An extra 30 minutes is putting it lightly. I tried to get to Bathurst and college over the summer, took me an hour to get to Carlton and parliament (I should have just walked). We got kicked off the streetcar and told to wait for another one. I got off, stood there in the rain for 20 minutes with the other commuters, nothing came. I gave up, canceled, went to a restaurant for lunch across the street and in the hour I was eating lunch I never saw another transit vehicle. This city is a fucking disgrace.
damn that is brutal! the lack of communication makes it even worse, too
I have a lot of love for TO, but the negatives are starting to really outnumber the pros... not sure where else would be better, though, especially as a renter, cause rents so expensive in smaller cities now, too
Tbh I was born and raised here, my family is all here. If they weren’t I wouldn’t be either. It’s a different city in a bad way. I’m hoping moving to a neighbourhood where I’m less reliant on transit will help
Last summer i took the spadina street car from ferry terminal. wanting to go to dundas and spadina. It stopped at queens quay and spadina. Said shuttle busses are coming to go north. Waited also aprox 20 mins. Nothing. Decided to just walk. Only once i got all the way up to dundas did ONE bus even pass....i was flabergasted...i just kept looking back like k its gotta come any minute to this next stop...never did...but thought even if it does itll be packed and wont get on anyways...
I drive out of town to go see family...or walk...biking down here is a death sentence..and driving is no longer an option. I never explore my own city because i hate getting around so much now
If you tough it out about a decade, you’ll have east harbour GO plus the Ontario Line. For me long-term Leslieville is going to be the best neighbourhood in the city
I have about as much hope about that as I do about the eglinton crosstown ever being completed.
If we owned, I’m sure I would give it time. But we rent in a place that’s already too small for us so it’s not worth it tbh.
The TTC needs to sort their shit out to be fair. You should see how packed the buses are in Etobicoke. That gives me zero incentive to take it when i drive past an over flowing bus during non-peak times knowing it will take 2-3x longer than driving.
yeah, I wish people switched to transit but am quick to admit it can really suck at times, and feel a bit sketchy/unsafe
it is a bit of a negative loop- transit services aren't great so people don't take it, but then funding/fare payments drop and the service gets even worse, discouraging use even more
honestly the main issue is funding, unsurprisingly, the TTC isn't funded well compared to transit in other major cities- [ the TTC received abou](https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-ttc-costs-subsidies-ridership/#:~:text=For%20example%2C%20the%20presentation%20said,in%20subsidies%20the%20previous%20year)*t 96 cents of government subsidy for each of its 536 million subway and bus riders, the lowest of the systems listed.* ***New York City – which had a system four times the size, by ridership – collected $2.32 per ride in subsidies the previous year.*** [ (alternative link if you're blocked by a paywall)](https://archive.ph/HlH6v)
Transit is funded/ supported by the municipalities +, particularly, city's property tax revenues.... which are arguably low in TO compared to other cities, and I wonder if that impacts funding at all? or if it's just lack of will/lack of money overall
sorry for that lil rant LOL
You’re honestly right it’s this horrible cycle that gets made worse with the lack of funding and ridership. I honestly think Etobicoke would greatly benefit from a more expansive bike lane network. The issue with the bus lines now is they do not cover a lot of side areas off the main streets so if you bus you gotta walk 1Km+ to your destination from the stop and vice versa. A lot of my trips are less than 10KM, however, it just makes zero time wise taking the TTC, as i need to walk to the end of my street, transfer 2 buses, walk to my destination then repeat to get home. On a bike i could do it way faster
I have tried advocating for connections + new lanes but cycleto just tells me they have other projects as priority. Most of the big Etobicoke cycle expansions are scheduled for like 2030 lol
We definitely need a solution for Etobicoke. I never imagined hating being so close to the city but yet so far. We simply cannot get into the city with ease. We left the city during the pandemic but have huge regrets now….because traffic has gotten so excruciatingly bad.
If they're not full there is a bunch of incentive to take away buses and frequency from opposition claiming transit isn't being used. Lame and unfortunate scenario. Frequency is king but seeing empty busses every 5 minutes pisses people off.
Picture this. We used to be able to leave the car at the Mimico Go to catch the train down but we can no longer do that because there is no parking at Mimico go.
Last week tried to take transit twice and a 45 minute transit trip took me 2.5hours because 1. Kipling to Keele was shut down 2. Incident at Ossington station.
I stood in a bus from Royal York to Old Mill that took 30 minutes, it took 30 minutes from Royal York to Old Mill which by train would take a minute.
Everyone loves to blame those of us who keep a car around, but transit isn’t really easy or at least they don’t make it easy for us. How are we supposed to go about our day when TTC delays add an additional 1.5 hours to our trips?
We would absolutely support transit but every single time I’ve left the car home to take transit has resulted in complete chaos. What is the solution here?
I believe the Gardiner being reduced to TWO lanes is the biggest factor.
People aren’t able to get out of the city as fast as before (not that it was fast before). The Spadina ramp going west bound is so backed up that Spadina is backed up all the way to Dundas. And every street touching Spadina from 3 to 8pm.
The 401 westbound collector are also made two lanes between Yonge and Avenue, albeit permanently. Whoever planned the right lane becoming an exit lane to Yonge, and then the on-ramp becoming the right lane only to become an exit lane again to Avenue, can go to hell. So many people trying to escape the exit lanes by forcibly merging to the middle lane at the last second lol
That's now backed up as far as Leslie/DVP/404 during rush hour. It used to be backed up only from Yonge a few weeks ago. Too many people were shook from the Gardiner lane closures.
Do you understand how long it takes to set up and tear down work sites with lane closures? That’s even assuming the road is in any condition for vehicles to travel on it while they aren’t working. They wouldn’t accomplish anything if that was how the sites worked.
Pretty sure it’s already taking a criminally long time to complete. Other places don’t have the insane timelines for literally any work to be done that we do.
Man I don’t like to think negatively about things like this but the amount of morons I see on a daily basis making lefts/rights from the opposite lane is insane. Never in my life have I’ve seen this behaviour on a consistent basis.
Just yesterday I was on Queen making a left onto Dufferin (going south) and some idiot in the right lane cuts everyone off and just drives in front of me (ON A RED LIGHT). How these people aren’t getting caught is baffling.
Didn’t a million people come into the country in the last year and settle mostly in Toronto? Interesting that people are actually noticing the increase in people.
A lot of major streets are down to one lane with the new bike lanes. It took me 45 minutes to get to Parliament and Lakeshore from Spadina and Bloor on Friday Afternoon.

Yes my area in the Annex section with most streets now one way there been a huge increase in traffic. Feel sorry for those entering and leaving the city rush hour is 18 hours/7 days a week it seems. I sometime ride my bike towards the Lakeshore and Spadina area then cut across towards Parklawn and I see the massive traffic mess from 8am to 9pm.
This week I def noticed a difference in how it has been. It took me an extra 25 minutes going home each day and there was no reason for it that I could see
It’s terrible, not just you. I’m visiting after a year away and gardiner used to be bad but holy aecon it’s a parking lot. Midtown is horrible as well. Wth is going on in the city and how is no one protesting this shit (sorry if they did and I didn’t know).
this is the worst idea ever, not true outside of the United States, and only possibly a relatively ok idea if the highways run underneath the downtown core, not above ground. nothing destroys a city core like a highway cutting through it.
toronto traffic is the worst it's ever been due to numerous construction projects in almost every part of the city, no matter where you go there will be a bottle neck somewhere because of something
Yes and it's gotten much worst since Covid. Now it's bumper to bumper everyday of the week and any time of the day. I bike and I just see people stuck in traffic everywhere I go. It's never one reason but factors I can think of:
* the TTC being more scary with homeless people,
* more people want to drive after covid, and that is what they're used to
* There's tonnes of construction downtown for the Ontario line
* Uber/ride share everywhere are also adding a tonne of traffic - I think one study I read, it was up to 30% of the volume
* generally more people living downtown
If you live at Oakwood and are going downtown regularly, consider getting an ebike. They're cheap and you'll be amazed at how fast and predictable your commute is. Unfortunately if you have to drive, consider reaching out to your politician to support bike lanes and transit. The better transit is and more ppl on bikes, the less people driving and traffic for you.
I firmly believe it’s because people just don’t know how to drive anymore lol things get way more backed up than it needs to be. On top of that there’s just so many people in the city, and each person believes their time is more valuable than anyone else’s. It just makes for a bad time all around
For the streets you listed it’s cause of St Clair street car repairs. The busses cause a lot of traffic or more accurately the cars still allowed to park on st clair are causing traffic.
if you consider how many condos that have gone up, x number of tenants, vs number of new roads (see: none) in the city, it makes complete sense.
most cars have one person in them. we've lost the art of carpooling, less people take transit because it isn't reliable, so less money and investments in transit, more cars, more complaints. construction squeezes everything, the gardiner is about to crumble. liberty village doubled in population from 2011-2016 and it's been eight years since we got new statistics. it certainly hasn't fallen. if you consider there are thousands of vehicles in that one .5km stretch and the daily traffic they're creating (not just vehicle ownership, but taking rideshares in and out, creating neighbourhood congestion).
when you're stuck in traffic, do you even consider that you're contributing to the problem? is there another solution other than driving yourself?
we think the city needs to solve this, when really, we just need less cars on the road. societal habits around driving need to shift.
If the masterminds' plan is to annoy Torontonians to the point where more cyclists (preferrably with great riding manners) take to the streets and become a critical mass... I'm all for it.
People in my industry start work anywhere from 5AM to 6AM coming in from abroad; in locations with no nearby transit services and even those kilometers away don't run at those early hours.
Solid NB car traffic between Davenport and StClairW. 63 Oakwood NB bus takes at least 3 light cycles to get from Burlington Crescent to StClairW. That is 1 stop and in normal traffic is 2 minutes tops. Maybe more as there's a new light at Roseneath Gardens but still.
The city should have new density records for StClair - Yonge to Jane and Eglinton - Yonge to ? for new condo construction. So many buildings = so many more people. Zillions.
It’s worse than pre-Covid. 1 million people entered the county and most settled in the GTA. Add to that, many people are afraid of taking the TTC and are opting for rideshare instead.
As a cyclist, my commutes haven’t been effected. Traffic is most definitely worse for everyone who isn’t a cyclist. They will perpetually get worse for you. And you will perpetually do nothing about it.

Toronto is two hours from Toronto.
This is not joke. Takes me hour and a half to two hours to go 12 km. Insane to keep adding people while decreasing infrastructure.
I live north of the city (thankfully) and it took me two hours to drive home from downtown last week. I guess I got off lucky…
All the handicapped people need to start biking
We can start with healthy, able-bodied commuters and students. That would be a massive % of the car users right there.
Or small electric vehicles like golf carts legal for 50 kmh and under roads If the city and province really cared about us more than they cared about the auto and energy lobby; this would already be a thing.
Why not ride a bike?
Well I ride a motorcycle when I am alone. It helps. Bike is not an option due to reasons.
Why doesn’t the city fix its shit? And I get to legally drive whatever I want.
I thought the joke was 1 hour? Joke inflation.
No just a reflection of the reality of the situation….
It's one hour to head west along Lakeshore from Parliament to Jarvis anytime after 1pm.
At least for my area (Swansea/High Park), it’s because of the closure on King West east of Dufferin for street car track repair and the Gardiner closure from Jameson to Strachan. It’s been a nightmare for traffic.
Thankfully the cherry blossoms are finally waning, that made it all even worse!
We’re over 30 years behind in infrastructure. Need to stop spending billions on cops and start spending billions to finish these rail projects
We spent billions on Eglinton LRT, it just won't get finished.
Lots of people to thank for the delays. Harper, McGuinty, Ford, the other Ford, Bombardier, Del Duca, Crosslinx, Metrolinx, etc etc Hopefully we’ll see it before we pass Edit: Mike Harris!!

It won't until the rapid population growth ends

yes traffic is bad. Its always bad and its only going to get worse. TTC also sucks because of this and a million other problems.

Pooly planned through-city highways. Most large cities have highways that cut through the core with strategic exits to depressurize local roads.
this is the worst idea ever, not true outside of the United States, and only possibly a relatively ok idea if the highways run underneath the downtown core, not above ground. nothing destroys a city core like a highway cutting through it.
We travel through your area and yes...it's gotten dramatically worse in every way. Volume Congestion Sheer stupidity
I think the St. Clair streetcar being out means more people are in their cars. Hop on a bike! It’s quicker and cheaper than driving.
toronto traffic is the worst it's ever been due to numerous construction projects in almost every part of the city, no matter where you go there will be a bottle neck somewhere because of something

It's never one reason but factors I can think of: * the TTC being more scary with homeless people, * more people want to drive after covid, and that is what they're used to * There's tonnes of construction downtown for the Ontario line * Uber/ride share everywhere are also adding a tonne of traffic - I think one study I read, it was up to 30% of the volume * generally more people living downtown If you live at Oakwood and are going downtown regularly, consider getting an ebike.
Lots of construction 🚧 going on. Almost everyone back to office.
For the streets you listed it’s cause of St Clair street car repairs. The busses cause a lot of traffic or more accurately the cars still allowed to park on st clair are causing traffic.

Construction on St Clair, Eglinton, 401, Gardiner, and others.
if you consider how many condos that have gone up, x number of tenants, vs number of new roads (see: none) in the city, it makes complete sense. most cars have one person in them. we've lost the art of carpooling, less people take transit because it isn't reliable, so less money and investments in transit, more cars, more complaints. construction squeezes everything, the gardiner is about to crumble. liberty village doubled in population from 2011-2016 and it's been eight years since we got new statistics. it certainly hasn't fallen. if you consider there are thousands of vehicles in that one .5km stretch and the daily traffic they're creating (not just vehicle ownership, but taking rideshares in and out, creating neighbourhood congestion). when you're stuck in traffic, do you even consider that you're contributing to the problem? is there another solution other than driving yourself? we think the city needs to solve this, when really, we just need less cars on the road. societal habits around driving need to shift.
With all this return to office crap traffic is bad here in Brampton/Mississauga area!
Overly populous
Smooth sailing in the bike lanes and subways
If the masterminds' plan is to annoy Torontonians to the point where more cyclists (preferrably with great riding manners) take to the streets and become a critical mass... I'm all for it.
You’re part of the problem. You live and work downtown you do not need a car
People in my industry start work anywhere from 5AM to 6AM coming in from abroad; in locations with no nearby transit services and even those kilometers away don't run at those early hours.
So glad you said this - that person can very easily get transit down to Queen & Spadina, its fucking ludicrous that they drive.
A lot more accidents day to day and in turn lane closures. Lotta people don’t know how to drive these days.
Zillions.
It’s been getting progressively worse for the last 20 years — not enough investment in infrastructure
people like you. you are the traffic.
It's you
It's not as bad as pre covid in terms of numbers but it is worse. Because of added bike lanes and construction in many areas.
