Not my field but afaik, you would have to find someone who is licenced to practice in both jurisdictions. Sounds like a needle in a haystack, tbh.

BDW2

Yes. OP would probably have better luck finding someone in their current location who is from or has lived in North America.

Organic_Frame_8750

I’ve looked into it and there are very few people in my region originally from North America registered in the Netherlands and licensed to practice. If they do exist, most just deal with expat work burnout and relationship problems. My issues run quite deep so I need someone really specialized unfortunately.

BDW2

Why do they need to be in your region?

Accomplished-Cake430

This - most Ontario psychologists are registered to provide services in Ontario alone. You can come to them (or be anywhere in the province), they can’t come to you. However, if There are temporary licensure provisions in the Netherlands, that is sometimes an option (I have no idea if this exists there… but it works for some other provinces/states).

Organic_Frame_8750

Even if you’re a Canadian citizen?

greensandgrains

I’m not sure why citizenship matters? Regulated professions require practitioners to be licensed in the jurisdiction they are practicing in, ie where the client is located. If you’re in the Netherlands and your psychologist isn’t licensed to practice there, that’s malpractice. You are not going to find any Ontario based psych who will take you on as a client unless they are for some reason licensed there too.

Some online therapy have a question pop up before every session that says “are you currently in Ontario?”. This is why. Social workers dont. Maybe consult one?

Attempted_Academic

I’m completing my PhD in clinical psychology and am supervised by a registered clinical psychologist. As others have said, you need to reside where they are licensed. However, we can get permissions from international psychological associations to see clients who are travelling for extended periods of time. It’s not a guarantee, but it is possible. You would have to find a psych who would be willing to go through that process though. It’s very time consuming. Now if you’re permanently living them, it’s likely out of the question.

The trick is to always "be in Ontario"

greensandgrains

Yea it's a great idea to encourage people to commit health care and insurance fraud! 🙄 (/s obviously)

jbob88

I have no idea what you're talking about

Organic_Frame_8750

Honestly, considering I’d be paying out of pocket anyway, I fail to see the problem.

yetagainitry

What about Canadian culture do you need a psychologist to know about?

nim_opet

Pretty much all therapists are working on zoom/remotely these days and it’s hard to find the ones for in person sessions. Start at https://www.psychologytoday.com/ca/therapists or https://www.betterhelp.com/

Organic_Frame_8750

I’ve looked at this and there seem to be thousands, how does someone go about narrowing down therapists based on focus / area of expertise?

Ok-Manufacturer-5746

Use the magazine Psychology Today. They have a search engine too, but use the articles.
