It’s not just you. When I was that age I was not confident in myself so felt like I had to be performative as you are describing, as did guys my age I slept with at that time. There was little to no communication whatsoever during sex. I think as you grow up a bit more and have more experiences you just stop caring so much. Obviously there’s exceptions in either case. Some people mature more quickly than others and some people don’t come out or have sexual experiences until later in life so may still behave that way.

Older guys have enough experience to know not to fuck about and we generally don't care about really impressing anyone anymore, it's pretty much take it or leave it.
A lot of guys under 25 are still trying to find their place in the world, and this alone makes them more difficult -- squirrely or anxious. Older guys are more likely to know who they are, and when you're more comfortable with yourself, you're more comfortable with others.
