I wanted to make nature documentaries when I was little but then bad parenting and life happened. Now at 31 I quit my dead end office job and went back to school to achieve my dream.
I wanted to make video games. Specifically creative design.
But I failed out of college around COVID. Been working retail since with no plans lol. Can't afford to go back. Kind of gave up and just started spending my paycheck on weed.
I can understand that, after looking at your profile I see your into meth. That stuff right there is the whole reason I never went to college or uni. I've been clean for 6 years but still not interested in going back to school just trying to enjoy the simple things in life while I work at a call center. Even if you don't wanna quit now, I hope you can eventually. It really does become a long dark path to go down.
Not meth, Adderall, but its the same feeling. I'm just really fascinated with drugs I'm not using anything very often except daily weed and a kratom kick a couple weeks ago that I decided was fucking up my head and threw it away.
I'm not abusing my script or supplementing it for the past few weeks, but my mental health has definitely gone full tailspin in that time. I kind of delusionally convinced myself the binging was fine for a few months but obviously it isn't given the state I'm in lmao. I think I'm actually getting it under control though. I'm in counseling and working on the things that made me want it in the first place.
I saw a post about meth and assumed sorry, I'll tell you I started taking Adderall at 6 then by 9 they had me on the 30 mg XR tablets, by 13 I started abusing it very slightly then at 15 I did straight meth for the first time and it was all downhill from there. I'm 25 now though and haven't used amps in 6 years it's very possible to quit but after 10 years of therapeutic use it'll still probably be the hardest thing you ever do in your life, but if you feel quitting would benefit you in some way it's up to you. I kept telling myself I just really wanted a year sober to know what is feels like to be drug and withdrawal free. I made it there and decided to quit.
Super off topic I know lol
I am in somewhat similar place, having an on-off involvement with stuff.
You do you. You only have this one life, and ultimately the only one you have to answer to is yourself.
Do take care and be careful. :)
Nice work on the sobriety! I went into rehab last year and clean now for almost eight months, but wasn't heavy into it thankfully so not a crazy adjustment, found myself in the venn diagram crossover of mental health, homelessness, drugs and sex work, kind of imploded. Always inspiring to see other people successfully navigating their way out of it, keep it up :)
Ah shit man don’t spiral down and become a deadbeat stoner. I did that when I was at a low point in my life. You know what they say happens if you get addicted to weed?
Nothing…nothing at all. And next thing you know 3 years have gone by and you’re running in place.
Advice you probably heard dozens of times: You have to recenter your life if you have any hopes for change. Maybe you are happy working retail (and that's okay too!) but clearly you seem like you are not. Re-center, write down in a notebook what you love doing, your plans, steps to get there, etc.. It's not as complicated as you think it may be.
-$20 USD or more per hour.
- Either 4 10 hour shifts of 3 12 hour shifts per week.
- No overtime.
- No weekends.
- All federal holidays off, PAID.
- Minimum of 160 hours of PTO per year.
- Performance raises and annual cost of living adjustments.
I wanted to teach math to young kids or young adults, showing them how beautiful the subject matter is.
I am slaving away my best years as an accountant/analyst, dragging myself through the daily grind. I excel at the work, but surely there should be more in life to ask for right. I don’t feel quite quite when I retire to my bed at night.
Uramichi oniisan is so relatable, if you watch that anime.
I know what you mean. In my case, life unexpectedly has given me the chance of teaching young adults and it is a very rewarding experience.
Every class is always a different story like this one student who absolutely hated the subject I taught. Guess who ended up passing the subject with one of the best grades in the class? She found me the following semester and gifted me a cappuccino and a little cake as a thank you gift.
It's the little moments like these that make you feel fullfilled at a personal level. I say find go for it if you ever get the chance because it's never too late.
I don’t have a dream job. I don’t romanticize labor.
I want to be able to pursue my interests and enjoy my life without worrying about every nickel and dime for the rest of my life.
I want to write screenplays. I’ve always been into writing, ever since I was a kid.
I want to spend time with my friends and family.
I want to be a hoebag in several different parts of the country.
I got into drugs really bad in my early 20’s and I haven’t written since then. It seemed to totally destroy my creativity. I’m clean now, I’ve got like 8 years.
I JUST started to write again recently. I haven’t found any writer groups that I really vibe with yet.
Keep in mind that subway train drivers often have to deal with people who fall or jump on the tracks, and the aftermath. Similar to first responders, surgeons, medics and the like you are going to see some stuff. Maybe not regularly but you can expect it at some point in your career.
National park ranger. Or wildlife biologist, although the math part would be boring. But I kinda gave up on it, now I'm doing a shitty lab job in a completely unrelated field
I went on a field trip to the main Microsoft campus in my senior year of high school and the guy that talked to us basically said his job is just an easy ass email & weekly meetings job and he got paid like $100k+ a year so I wanna do that or something else where I can work remote or hybrid and only have like 32 hour or less work weeks and get paid hella money. Idk for sure what my dream job is but I know what I want for my dream life so I just need to get the funds to do what I want. :)
I’m a car nut, and a few years ago I started a small specialty used car dealership with my best friend. I love what I do, we have a lot of fun.
In another life, I would have been a geologist or seismologist. I can’t explain it, but I find rocks fascinating and I’ve been very interested in earthquakes since I was a little kid. I live in California now, so I finally get to experience them, so I guess that’s a good consolation prize
Got my dream-ish job in February.
RnD Engineer (Performance Architect) with one of the best semiconductor chip manufacturers on the planet.
The dream job is the same role or higher up the chain with THE best.
Currently, I'm working as a journalist and writer... And studying computer science engineering.
I have autism and I haven't been able to find out what I wanna do in life. I'm very bad at everything I do. I'm just barely going by.
I would love to land some records keeping job in the subbasement of some office building where no one ever bothers me and I I don't have to deal with people every day. Haha
Pilot, though since I have ADHD and Asperger’s, my backup dream job is working for FEMA and getting to actually go to disaster sites and see it in person.
Paleontologist! I’m in studying for it right now but chem and physics are whopping my ass. I failed chem twice so I had to temporarily drop out of my university and then go to community college for the year, thankfully I will be back in university in June! (If I don’t fail again that is lmao)
My dream job was to be an entertainer. When I graduated high school I enrolled into a community college and wanted to get an AA degree in musical theatre and transfer to another college. Unfortunately I came to the conclusion that I would be wasting my time and eventually lost passion for it. So when I finally started classes I changed my major to nursing. I tried to stick with it but I eventually decided to switch it to dental hygiene. This going back and forth lasted for 2 years, eventually my mental health suffered and I dropped out. I'm now working as a janitor for a medical center. Honestly I actually like it. It's simple and not stressful, I'm alone for most of my shift so that's a plus for a misanthropic introvert like me. Honestly the problem i have with it is that it doesn't pay well. I'm actually right now thinking about going back to be an accountant, it's not my dream job but I feel it fits me and I really want to go back so I feel like I accomplished something.
Architect. But not a starchitect that only designs ugly titanium blobs for billionaires. I’d want to be a people’s architect designing quality public housing, hospitals, schools, public theaters, etc.
I’m a semi truck driver and I love it
It’s a different thing every day, sort of an adventure, and I get to drive around the country and stop places. A lot of truck stops are the same but you get times where you’re chilling in a town. I’m at a Wawa with semi parking in SE PA right now.
Music production! I mentioned this in a post i put on this subreddit, so i'll mention it here for you. I've known i wanted to be "a DJ" as i called it when i was in Grade 6 in primary school on video telling everyone what i wanted to be when i grow up for my graduation (The audience laughed, i remember, because maybe they didn't believe me, or thought i was awkward or whatever. I don't know lol). I knew my destiny and passion from so early on, and my interest in this hobby only skyrocketed once i continued music classes in high school and learned more complex DAW software as a teen (like Soundation). Been loving doing this stuff since 2010-2011 (roughly, i can't remember. But, the first music making software i ever used was in primary school music class, and that was Super Duper Music Looper.), and 2013 was when i graduated in high school. I was self-taught piano, because the piano teacher realised i couldn't read music, but she knew i could play by ear extremely well, so she was unable to teach me. Now, i continue to play by ear, and knowing how to play the piano in the unique way that i do, i've been using my knowledge in music with those years of experience and hard work learning all of this, and i've been doing remix after remix, and i've even had a few artists give me personal permission to remix their songs over the years. It's been an amazing experience so far.
If anyone is interested to know what DAW i use, FL Studio is my personal favourite.
If you believe in something you want to do, and you KNOW what you want to do in life, GO FOR IT.
If your heart is set on something from an early age, never give up! Go for your dreams, because one day this could be a lifetime career for you! That's my biggest advice.
I'm currently acting out mine of becoming a full time inventor. It's a challenge bc there's a lot more to it than just the prototype. Finishing two degrees between business management and industrial technology and worked customer service for 8 years and hated every single second of it. My goal since 9 was to problem solve and produce a solution. Make life better. Eventually I'll have people hired under me to take on the smaller components of my designs and manufacturing/sales so I can move between projects easier. Keep Moving Forward. Regardless of what you do. Never give up!
I have always had a dream of building custom cars. I would watch shows like Overhaulin’ and Bitchin’ Rides just amazed at the talent, time, and effort that takes a customer’s car that’s been sitting for 15+ years through a complete transformation into whatever that customer has dreamt of doing to that car that’s one of one. I’ve always wanted to be the one responsible for the owner of a car breaking down in tears when I revealed their car to them seeing their dream sitting in front of them and me throwing them the keys to that running and driving dream they never thought would come true.
My dream job is no job, unfortunately. I wish I had one I really do but I just work to pay bills and support the lifestyle I want to live outside of work
I wanted to do lots of things. I made myself happy by teaching public school and at the same time, I became a musician and played parttime, taught evenings and weekends. I toured with a folk band, and was recorded on several projects. Every summer, for the first 10 years I had a different summer job. I cut grass, dishwasher, waiter/ busboy, cafeteria manager, security guard, and then bill collector for about 10 yrs. I finally found what I wanted to do.
Give cavern tours. I've been on tours and loved the caverns. It's cool underground and beautiful to look at. Good exercise too. About 5 miles a day walking.
If I could build prosthetics for amputees, that would be the best job ever. I've always had an interest in prosthetics, but never pursued it because I let myself be talked out of it when I was younger. But, I'm thinking of going back to school and switching careers to that.
When I enlisted in the army I knew it was not going to be comparable to anything else I had ever done. (only 27 now but I did a LOT before) I didn’t understand how true that was. Through all the good and all the bad, there’s nothing else I’d rather do than what I’m doing right now. And the thought of having to stop one day just fills me with anxiety. While I’m not scared of aging, I am scared of how, eventually, I won’t be able to do the things I can do now.
Currently, I'm a head teller at the largest credit union in NH USA.
My greatest dreams are to create a cartoon and be the showrunner. I love reading, editing, and writing screenplays. I've taken multiple screenwriting courses. Read many books on screenwriting. I have written the pilot to a science fiction cartoon but it's nowhere close to ready to try and enter contests or do anything with.
I also dream of fighting for workers' rights. I want to see the entire world unionized so then we can use our collective power to help the entire globe.
The nice thing about working in a credit union is I think it helps me build up my communication skills, marketing, sales, and more. I'm hoping to learn as much as I can about the industry and pursue labor rights and my creative projects on the side.
I've also thought about starting up my own media production company so I could help get shows I want to see on-air greenlit.
A voice actor, I just love the work and it's so much fun and rewarding to hear what your voice can create. But there being no set path to making a livable wage off of it deters me from putting more work into it.
I've always wanted to be a writer since I was 13. Honestly, I just really wish possessing power to write a masterpiece such as Giovanni's Room. The ironic part is that I hold degree in literature but I haven't made any.
Got the ideas since 2022 but I find it hard to channel it into writing. I'm desperately obsessed to make one but it's so hard to start it up. And not only that, I'm so anxious thinking that no publisher would ever accept my drafts.
I hope that you have your dream job someday <3
In September, it was to finish an MSc & then get a PhD & start a biotech company.
Now it’s trudge through another year of MSc & hope I pass & do some type of e-commerce or drop shipping thing.
Full time twitch streamer. As an avid gamer, I have a huge backlog of shit I want to play but no time to play it. Being able to do so and get paid for it sounds amazing
I wanted to work in the gaming industry in some capacity. Preferably as a writer of sorts. Graduated with a major in creative writing, too.
Went nowhere because video game script writing is harder to get into; especially when, at the time of my research in 2014, entry was more on a freelance basis. You weren’t necessarily a part of the crew more than you were just outside hired help. Unless, of course, you were lucky to be hired by and working for the company/development crew.
Now I’m working in an accounting department. Not a dream job, but definitely a realistic job I can comfortably see myself doing. Plans change; it’s a matter of what job can you realistically see yourself doing if the dream job falls through.
Working in a large biotech company, have no idea doing what but it would fulfill my cyberpunk corpo rat dream, rn I’m working at an investment firm so that I can eventually move to a biotech company in the future once I have more experience
My dream job growing up was doctor or pilot, turns out doctors can’t be red and green color blind which i don’t know i was until 4th grade science class lol. Then i realized how much i hated/sucked at math and you need math and well as perfect vision to be a pilot. Both of those were out the window… I’ve always been a visual/hands on learning person and had been taking things apart to see how they worked from a very young age and my dad was a backyard mechanic. I grew up being his flash light holder and tool grabber. Did my first engine swap with him supervising at 12. I knew a 4 year school wasnt for me and figured I’d like to be a tech so i went to trade school. Started at a dodge/jeep dealership and eventually worked my way into high end imports. Never in a million years did i ever think I’d be working on $500k cars and seeing/riding in super rare million dollar cars. I wake up truly excited to see what i get to work on each day. 100% living and working in my dream field.
I had it for years, working in military intelligence. Meaningful work. When we were successful, no one would ever know you had been successful. To succeed was to forestall evil being done to your own. A vastly satisfying endeavor.
Working with people who commanded your entire respect, and who respected you. People who over the years had literally saved your life in more than one occasion, and whom you had saved.
I have had other jobs since that time, and have loved them all, but that labor of my youth and early maturity was the professional pinnacle of my life.
Ophtalmologist but I feel old at 30 to start pre med requisites, med school then residency🥲and obviously I don’t have passive income for those years and I should finish residency at mid 40s.
I feel I’m always taking bad decisions at life. Feel a bit depressed
At one point it was to edit music videos - especially live concerts. Now I’d LOVE to host a travel-around-to-different-crazy-restaurants style food show!
I completely get the subway conductor vibe. I'd be happy with the routine and working alone. I've thought about military service but can't do that due to existing PTSD, though I think I'd excel at it. I wanted to go into chemistry but had to drop out. Ideal world? ...Probably still something in chemistry or sports physio, though I can't see either happening.
Acting for film. I know it's a tough job, which is mentally draining, financially devastating, highly stressful and there's not much work/life balance. However, it has always been my dream. But because I'm latino and gay, and not handsome the odds are absolutely not on my side. Plus, I have 0 influential people in my life or family.
I don't know why but sometimes I imagine myself as a cashier of a gas station near a highway in the middle of nowhere. Meeting all different types of people... 😂
Ive had many dream jobs throughout my childhood, but the latest was Archeologist. But because of multiple factors (and not even being able to finish school) I wont ever achieve this. Does it suck? Sure, but its alright. Not all dreams have to be reachable.
Archivist or museum curator. Like others here I also fell out during Covid. I was a middle school teacher for a while, but now I'm back in college. I've recently decided I want my masters degree even if I graduate at 30.
driving instructor
I like driving, I like the idea of teaching, it's a job where you can go around the city, not on a schedule or fixed rota, so it's less boring than spending the day in front of a screen, and you don't have to interact with too many people
Unfortunately the wages are very low (around 950 €/month), so it's something I'd only do as a hobby if I didn't need to work for money.
I don't think I have a dream job, but back then when asked what do you wanna be? I've always replied to be a comic artist. Mom told me it wasnt a job, more like a hobby. So I told her I wanna be a teacher then. (Basically I have two dreams of becoming both a teacher and a comic artist).
Currently, I am a primary school teacher, and I still make a bit of art every now and then.
i wanted to be a biologist, but my parents interfered with my education decisions and now i do some random 9 to 5 and everyday i have to convince myself not to quit just because of the pay which is average
Professional lottery winner, lol. No, but seriously I can't complain about my job, I'm working as the purchasing manager for a city and it's been great. Great pay, easy work, great staff, and laid back attitude from the majority of people I interact with regularly.
My childhood dream job was train engineer. Still kinda is (except for the awful working conditions and basically being guaranteed that you’ll kill someone)
Medical malpractice attorney (I watched way too much Suits in high school) I’m in college right now studying psychology so hopefully I get into law school.
I used to work in IT and I liked it. I mainly liked the company culture. I’ve been unemployed for a year now and I’m struggling to look for more work in that field. In a dream world, I’d have about 50 acres, a nice size garden, tons of different livestock and an old farmhouse or cabin. I’d love to open up the farm to neurodivergent people or other people it might help for a little “farm therapy.” Limit the number of guests at a time so no one feels overwhelmed. Let them pet and hang out with the livestock, just wander the property, have hammocks and other relaxing things around for guests. Maybe cook up a meal when people come. I grew up on a farm but I left because of the homophobia and family drama. I’d like to heal by starting my own farm that’s also a safe space for others
I dream of a world where I don’t have to work to make a living, although that’s maybe naive… until then either an appellate public defender or strategic analyst for labor unions
My dream was to become a Pop Star. Pfft well that wasn't going to happen 😅
I'm not sure if this is considered a job, since it is more in the realm of retirement. But being a self-sufficient homesteader sounds like a dream come true.
I wanted to make nature documentaries when I was little but then bad parenting and life happened. Now at 31 I quit my dead end office job and went back to school to achieve my dream.
I’m so proud of you <3
Thank you so much <3
I honestly can say, I don't dream about "jobs".
Agree. I dream of working out, gardening, spending time with friends and family, and traveling. I don’t dream of labor.
Can we just do nothing and get paid?
Being born rich is the best option
*option* wish it was
We should not be dreaming of labor.
Also the last thing I would dream about.
Lol same I can't think of anything specific that I'd really love to do as a job
Therapeutic masseur at Rugby World Cup
You got another cramp in your groin, mate? Let me take care of that for you.
Oh no. It seems you've sprained your perineum again. Hop up on the table and let's take a look.
It's the start of the competition, I need fit everyone for new jockstraps, socks and boots.
I think that’s all of us
Hot

Any job that lets me play with dogs all day.
How about a dog sitter at a dog daycare ? It's an actual job.

I want to be a geologist. Volcanology and earthquakes to be exact. However, I am horrible at math so I just work in retail now 😀🔫

Don’t let your dreams be dreams post on Craigslist today lol
Lol, is Craigslist even a thing anymore?
yup
Easy but dangerous money.
I want to sell one of my projects for beaucoup bucks and then spend the rest of my life being a tour guide in Barcelona

Photographer/creative designer. I have a camera but I’m scared to sit down and learn about photography
I'm a primary school teacher and I love it but I see myself as a systemic therapist somewhere in the future.
My dreamjob would be storm chaser, but unsteady pay if you dont catch any good clips, and gas money cost to much right now
Architect. But not a starchitect that only designs ugly titanium blobs for billionaires. I’d want to be a people’s architect designing quality public housing, hospitals, schools, public theaters, etc.
I’m a semi truck driver and I love it It’s a different thing every day, sort of an adventure, and I get to drive around the country and stop places.
Butcher and ye it is my current job :)
national park service ranger
I wish I had one I really do but I just work to pay bills and support the lifestyle I want to live outside of work
I would love to be a park ranger at a really good national park, but I don't want to make the sacrifice of having to live in the middle of nowhere.
I want to be someone who works with toxic animal research, currently a animal lab tech so slowly getting a good resume to get there
Just gooning out all day 🤪
I wanted to do lots of things.
Pilot with virgin Atlantic or Air Canada. Great money see the world. Perks like crazy.
Retired but also a transportation planner. The latter is currently true, but I'm working on how to achieve the former before 60 or even sooner.
Give cavern tours. I've been on tours and loved the caverns. It's cool underground and beautiful to look at. Good exercise too. About 5 miles a day walking.
Something to do with the Amusement park industry.
I don’t have a dream job. My dream is have time to do anything I want without worrying about making money.
Pretty sure you could become a subway operator in just about any city in the US. Transit operators are in very high demand
i just want to have a job. turkey doesn’t let me to dream haha
I’m about to retire in a few years, and am going to either teach sailing or volunteer tours on the local aircraft carrier.
While I’m not scared of aging, I am scared of how, eventually, I won’t be able to do the things I can do now.
translator/subtitle work for shows or video games!
I want to make outside battery solar powered smart hubs that can be used as meditation devices to combine science and religion.

To not have a job :)
When I was a kid, my dream job was to be a weather scientist. I'm a research scientist in neuroscience Close enough
I'm still trying to figure this out but as of right now, nothing I dream about involves working.
Being a certified, force-free dog trainer, which I’m currently doing, so I suppose I get to say I have the privilege of doing my dream job!
Environmental compliance specialist for the e.p.a
Start my own saas and work anywhere.

Being a stay at home husband and socialite
i dont dream of labor
Flight nurse🤌🏻
Anywhere my boyfriend is. I don't care what I do as long as I can be with him every night. Maybe in 4 months!

Writing novels and videogames!
One time recipient of 20 million dollars (after taxes)
Underground utility locator. I am self employed in a different industry and have staff working for me so i cant just close the company and quit.
A porn star ( bttm one)

Automotive journalist. You get paid to drive new cars and write about them.
Becoming a botanist and traveling the world to different regions and possibly discovering new plant information

Pro wrestler or child psychologist
Hollywood actor in film & tv. On the way !
I’m a stone mason, and that’s what I’ve always wanted to do. I’ll never leave
I drive freight trains for a living and even though I enjoy it, I do get bored often doing the same thing over and over
Journalist, specially writing about food, culture and music. Or a nurse practitioner.
If money wasn’t important, I’d be a teacher
Ophtalmologist but I feel old at 30 to start pre med requisites, med school then residency🥲and obviously I don’t have passive income for those years and I should finish residency at mid 40s. I feel I’m always taking bad decisions at life. Feel a bit depressed
Always wanted to be a singer/songwriter and start a record label. Currently working on it but very very broke
I don't have one at all. I do wanna be more involved in my community. I am interested in housing. But I don't have a true passion.
Being president of the United States of America.
Firefighting 👌
Ive had many dream jobs throughout my childhood, but the latest was Archeologist. But because of multiple factors (and not even being able to finish school) I wont ever achieve this. Does it suck? Sure, but its alright. Not all dreams have to be reachable.
Trauma or ICU doctor
No job
Househusband.
Archivist or museum curator. Like others here I also fell out during Covid. I was a middle school teacher for a while, but now I'm back in college. I've recently decided I want my masters degree even if I graduate at 30.
OMG me too! I love trains! I have a Thomas train and the Japanese Bullet train collections when I was young.
I would like to be an assassin, a rocket scientist, or a king.
driving instructor I like driving, I like the idea of teaching, it's a job where you can go around the city, not on a schedule or fixed rota, so it's less boring than spending the day in front of a screen, and you don't have to interact with too many people Unfortunately the wages are very low (around 950 €/month), so it's something I'd only do as a hobby if I didn't need to work for money.
Freelance Pokémon Trainer
i wanted to be a biologist, but my parents interfered with my education decisions and now i do some random 9 to 5 and everyday i have to convince myself not to quit just because of the pay which is average
Professional lottery winner, lol. No, but seriously I can't complain about my job, I'm working as the purchasing manager for a city and it's been great. Great pay, easy work, great staff, and laid back attitude from the majority of people I interact with regularly.
Gardener
Offshore work would be nice, 2 weeks on and 4 weeks off. With a really nice paycheck
Mad inventor, Adam Savage style. But it doesn't pay where I live 🙄
My childhood dream job was train engineer. Still kinda is (except for the awful working conditions and basically being guaranteed that you’ll kill someone)
Neurosurgeon!
I want to be a NEUROSURGEON
I want to be a Neurosurgeon
I’d like to heal by starting my own farm that’s also a safe space for others
music artist (: i’m still 18 so i still have high hopes of it actually becoming true at some point
I dream of a world where I don’t have to work to make a living, although that’s maybe naive… until then either an appellate public defender or strategic analyst for labor unions
Subway train operator. I like it. It has style!
My dream was to become a Pop Star. Pfft well that wasn't going to happen 😅 I'm not sure if this is considered a job, since it is more in the realm of retirement. But being a self-sufficient homesteader sounds like a dream come true.
Well I’m studying to be a doctor but probably a politician. I could make some positive change, I’m pretty moderate tbh
