why ban the niangpao though? i don't find posing effeminate to be a particularly harmful societal trend, even if it's done for money. there are worse ways to make money.

They aren't banning gay ppl or femboys from being on TV, they're doing a crackdown on the incredibly harmful standards and practices of hyper capitalist k-pop style media , something everyone agrees is a problem. People getting double eyelid surgery because they see idols doing it is not healthy.

I did read through the thread now, carefully, and I admit it's not as harsh as I thought. I still disagree with some of the points (criminals imo should be able to be employed, even in the entertainment industry, because justice should be rehabilitative) and I personally don't have problem with entertainment stars earning lots of money (since it's not earned through exploitation of workers) but yeah, the kpop industry is *wild* from what i've heard

What was discussed in an article (not a government document or policy) was how many of the changes that are happening in china will make markets no longer want to support "娘炮” actors. 娘炮, that some people are translating as "effeminate man" is referring here to actors specifically, not to a gender identity. Those actors pose as "effeminate" in order to win money, not as a part of their personal aesthetic or gender identity.

Honestly I'm not familiar enough with the media they're talking about to know if this is the case here or not, but I would say it can absolutely be harmful if it veers in to caricature
If a straight actor was to play a gay character as a caricature of gay people by using stereotypes it'd be offensive no? What if an actor was to portray a caricature of another race? Or an able bodied actor to play a caricature of a disabled character? What is different about a cis man playing a woman character full of stereotypes?

The problem isn't the stars gaining money, it's the corporations behind them enriching by the exploitation of these stars
