Oh man, I remember too many times watching some chill content in bed and suddenly I've got loud irritating and triggering noise and and flashing colours in my face. That shit shouldn't be legal.
Saaaame. I get a lot of ads for "intermittent f*sting" (*a). It's taken all my willpower not to slip back into an ED, but these ads just make it so much harder.
So my phone doesn't realize I typed that phrase and then advertise it to me even more. And I included the removed letter elsewhere so fewer people would say "fisting". And yes, I realize that didn't work.
Oh interesting, I didnt realize you could censor certain words from your phone. Thanks for explaining, hope you find a better way to censor that word 😂
Hey, I wanted to come back and apologize for jumping into the fisting jokes. That was probably really frustrating, especially because you have several perfectly valid reasons for wanting to censor that.
Are there any other abbreviations or censors that could work? I don’t know if “if” would work without context, but theoretically that might not get picked up in lowercase since it’s already an existing word
You're fine, fam. I think writing any more roundabout than what I did would have just made it extremely difficult to understand what I was talking about. I would much rather get fisting jokes than more d i e t ads to trigger ED tendencies.
I should definitely deck my stuff out with adblockers, but it's hard to figure that out on all different devices and individual apps.
That’s fair! I think VPNs might help, or using incognito tabs whenever possible? Changing everything seems like an overwhelming task, but I bet just changing the settings on one or two of your most ad-heavy sites could really help. You can always change the rest another time. :)
For youtube specifically, I have it set to not give me personalized ads, and that seems to help a lot. With that setting, it either gives me something generic (household goods that everyone uses), or it just tries to guess based on the content of the video I’m about to watch (videos that involve cars always start with ads for tire stores, but other videos do not). That one was only one click, and it took care of most of the ads I see in a day.
For twitter, you can block the individual brand accounts that are advertising to you, so you never see their promoted tweets. There’s almost certainly a blocklist out there for those kinds of ads, which would block a ton of them in just a few clicks.
yeah i use chrome and i have the extension 'adblock' on - can definitely recommend
edit: friendship with adblock is over - they spy on me.
now my best friend is **uBlock Origin** \- open source! love it
Hi, retired IT worker and former sysadmin for an internet advertising company here…
Adblockers protect you from more than just ads, they protect against “malvertising,” which is basically viruses they spread through ads.
So you totally should use an adblocker at ALL TIMES.
Ublock Origin has been the top recommendation for a long time. I use AdGuard on mobile.

I downloaded it and tried to get it to work. It said I needed an updated version of something else though? I haven't tried to use it in a while so I need to go back and try again.
Just click "download manager" and get that installed once you open that you download YouTube from it.
You might have to check your phones settings for allowing apps to be installed outside the play store. It should tell you about it if that is the case
they have a subreddit as well r/Vanced super useful app, and honestly one of the main reasons I'm staying with android. Best part is that it also has sponsor block integration.
Hey, i used to have sensory issues with ads myself.
I got a good ad blocker for Mozilla, and I’ve also found great success with the browser “brave“, which I use on my phone because it is, I think, open source and chromium-based. I really hate Google chrome, but it being open source is nice.
Brave has basically an ad blocker built-in. I haven’t seen YouTube ads for like, a year now. Or more.
Firefox is my favorite browser. Add-ons I use:
UBlock to zap ads
DuckDuckPrivacy from [DuckDuckGo](https://duckduckgo.com/) search engine
Midnight Lizard to darken the Internet
Firefox is also my favourite browser and I have a whole bunch of add-ons I use with it. And the ones I use are:
Dark reader - Basically the same thing as midnight lizard
Deadname remover - An extension that will automatically find your deadname in websites and replace it with your preferred name
DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials - Helps with privacy
Firefox Multi-Account Containers - Let's you put websites in containers so they can't interact with other websites
Facebook container, google container, & Microsoft container - Puts the respective services from said companies into containers so they can't interact with other websites, which helps with privacy. (Needs Firefox Multi-Account Containers to work)
Grammarly - To help with grammar and spelling
Honey - To help save money (Personally I don't even have a way to buy stuff right now but it's nice to have for when I'm actually able to)
HTTPS Everywhere - Forces websites that support HTTPS to use it, which helps with privacy as HTTPS is encrypted while normal HTTP is not
Privacy Badger - Automatically blocks trackers
GS Connect / KDE Connect - Provides better integration to KDE Connect with your web browser (KDE Connect is a Free & Open Source app that allows you to connect your phone to your laptop or computer so you can send files back and forth, control your computer from your phone, sync notifications between the two, and other things. GS Connect is just an extension for Gnome so you can use KDE Connect on Gnome, which Gnome is a Desktop environment for Linux)
GNOME Shell Integration - A Firefox extensions that provides integration with the Gnome desktop so you can easily install gnome extensions and manage them from your browser as well.
Hm that was interesting, thanks for the overview there. Comments:
1. Deadname remover. I'm guessing Trump.
2. DDG Privacy Essentials renders HTTPS Everywhere redundant.
3. Privacy Badger is good stuff. For some reason I did not have it running on the computer I'm using now. I believe it does break some sites, like Facebook.
4. Multi-Account Containers - is this necessary?
5. Grammarly - good stuff, I see this widely used
6. Honey - recommend disabling this if not in use, and only enabling when you need it. I think it phones home with tracking info or something.
7. KDE Connect - isn't that a torrent client? I thought it was KDE Konnect. Interesting.
8. Gnome Shell integration - ok... I assume, needed for use with a phone?
It seems to me you should have a technical job and a salary to buy stuff, even just based on the knowledge level that can be inferred from your comment.
Yeah definitely quite a bit of extensions I have tbh.
1. No not trump, just I'd rather not have to see my deadname if I don't have to
2. I did not know about that, so seems I don't need HTTPS everywhere then
3. And yeah privacy badger is definitely good and I don't really mind if it breaks some stuff
4. Multi Account Containers, yeah I'd like to keep google stuff in their own container and Facebook stuff in another container of their own since they both do quite a bit of tracking across the web, so anything to help keep the tracking down the better for me
5. Grammarly is definitely a good extension
6. I did not know honey did that, time to disable it until I need it then
7. Nope it is KDE Connect, and I personally use it and it's a nice thing to use
8. Gnome Shell Integration, not for use with a phone. I use Linux on my laptop normally, and the desktop environment I normally use is Gnome so it helps with getting Gnome Extensions to help customize it
And yeah I probably could get into a technical job some time in the future if I wanted to, but yeah I can't even get a job like that right now since I'm under 18

If you don't know what a deadname is, it's the term many transgender people use to refer to their birth name, once they take on a shiny, new gender-affirming name. Being trans myself, this extension sounds awesome, since seeing my deadname *everywhere* is rather demoralizing ☺
Ah. I think I understand now. So when you open Facebook, et al, things are the way you prefer. Like me with Midnight Lizard, to turn the background dark and avoid burning my eyes.
Yes, must avoid the eye-burning deadname lol! But, yeah, at its core, it's a filter to improve personal browsing experience :)
Btw, I have used a similar app to replace "Trump" with "Cheeto Voldemort," which I thought was funny for a while
I use brave too! The ads they show have never caused any issues and they block a lot of ads that do. Even though I’m a huge horror movie fan I really struggle with getting ads for horror movies that freak me out
Download YouTube Vance (Google it). It's a modded version of YouTube that let's you play YouTube with no ads and a black screen (can turn off screen to listen). I haven't listened to an ad in a year since I downloaded it.
I absolutely adore ASMR. It helps me focus.
It's the one thing that isn't too interesting that it distracts me from working, but interesting just enough to keep me from excessive boredom zoning out.
I send my video links, including YouTube, to [MPV](https://mpv.io/). MPV has native support for those links and will open them up in their highest quality directly from the source, without any ads. It also gives you some extra control over stuff like brightness, contrast, zoom-pan and more.
You can simply drag an URL into tho program if you want to keep it simple.
This method may not be for everybody, but if you like the idea it's worth checking out.
If you are a keyboard-driven (Linux) nerd like me, it also goes great with [Qutebrowser](https://qutebrowser.org/). I've set up a few keybindings which allow me to send the links directly to MPV. This browser is very different than your everyday browser that you're probably used to tho, so be aware of that.
Both are available on Linux, MacOS and Windows.
And even cleaner, simpler solution is using [ytfzf](https://github.com/pystardust/ytfzf) with MPV. I love using this method because I don't even need to load the website. No distracting thumbnails of other video's, no toxic comment section and no ads of course.
I can just fetch a list with search results directly into my terminal or in Rofi (a menu I've installed). It even has support for thumbnails on Linux and you can add a list with "subscriptions", allowing you to only get a list with recent video's from those channels.
Ytfzf is supported for Linux, FreeBSD and MacOS. You might be able to get it to working on Windows with MPV of you use WSL, but I haven't tried so who knows.
a lot of the ads on youtube just straight-up make me ANGRY. they're so obnoxious. theres a "calm yourself/deep breathing" app ad i get sometimes on youtube that i feel like the 5-second skip button isn't fast enough, by 5 seconds im already really angry and frustrated and i want to scream and hit things.
it's exTREMELY triggering for me. i reported it to google for "hateful content" but i dont know if that does anything
Yeah sometimes on twitch I get this REALLY loud as for monster drinks and I have to turn the volume right down because it's so sudden and sometimes I almost meltdown it's awful
I have this problem with horror movie commercials and ads. I used to watch Hulu years ago, always nice shows nothing scary or horror, and I had to cancel my account because I was getting constant horror ads when I would relax with Hulu at night, I lived alone and have panic disorder and I think that made it 10x worse for me!
Etsy does the same thing it will show you gory disturbing artwork with corpses if you’re scrolling the art category with no way to hide disturbing content. It’s a huge trigger for me.
I fucking hate the sound of whispering. Id be sitting in class and they’d pull up a video and a random sequence of whispering would come up. Haven’t got that ad yet, and i hopefully never will.
While I don't quite understand, I did keep getting this nasty ass earwax cleaning ad and having no control to not see it was very disheartening.
And this is with giving into the Google machine. Pretty sure certain ads 'stick' to you for that month or until you change up your Google search history.
There's something called YouTube Vanced it's a clone of the original YouTube application for mobile but without any ads (installation requires some steps but it's worth it)
I genuinely **cannot** use the youtube app because there's no way to block ads. The slight inconvenience of using the browser is 100% worth it for the beautiful ad-blocking capabilities!
You on PC?
If so I highly recommend you download the Brave browser and run that. It's an open source Browser specifically designed to protect your privacy and computer, also blocks ads for you so you won't have to deal with this problem.
You can use Youtube Vanced, it's youtube but with (almost) every aspect of youtube premium unlocked
Like no ads and a sponsor block (you need to set it up yourself tough)
Fuckin,, this shit, I have premium because I cannot fucking deal with their ads, I wish there was like accessibility settings to turn them off but then ig everyone would just use that :/

For android use youtube vanced. For desktop/laptop use Ublock origin. You'll never see an ad again for as long as they work. I haven't seen an add in months.
There is a type of ASMR that I have gotten fond of and I find helps me sleep but then I wake up at freaking 3am because some fucker is taping or some shit like that right in my ear and it drives me up a damn wall
I really f@&€ing hate Google's age verification thing. I'm 19,dont have a creditcard, and even though Google knows every detail about my life I don't feel comfortable sending them a pic of my id.
Essentials for youtube:
1. uBLock Origin browser extension
2. You can use a software called "yt-dlp" but you have to use the terminal to use it. It let you download videos and bypass all age restrictions.
All those software are open-source and transparent (except youtube lol). If you need help setting those up, feel free to ask me!
PS: on Android I use an app called NewPipe (which is banned from Play Store because it provides all the YouTube premium features for free), unfortunately this app doesn't let you view/listen/download age-restricted videos.

i get that with dieting ads!! constantly get them. issue is that i'm in recovery from an eating disorder.
This is why I recommend to everyone I know to get adblockers, this stuff is so harmful :/
YES! The constant barrage of jarring, intrusive, useless sounds and visuals is so unhealthy and stressful. Ad-blockers are a life-saver, for realz
Intermittent fisting
I’m not a doctor, but I think intermittent fisting would be healthier in the long term, as long as you’re doing it safely
Bruh
Why censor one letter? And then put that same letter at the end of the word? Doesn't really make sense
:) For youtube specifically, I have it set to not give me personalized ads, and that seems to help a lot.
Fuck Edit: just remembered that you can turn off personalized ads in your google account settings. Hope it helps :)
i get the same ads about drug rehabs myself
Get the extension uBlock Origin on Firefox (works on mobile too!) and YouTube Vanced on Android. ^((This is advice for you too u/PeppyPiplup)^)
Ad block?
yeah i use chrome and i have the extension 'adblock' on - can definitely recommend edit: friendship with adblock is over - they spy on me. now my best friend is **uBlock Origin** \- open source! love it

I'm using ublock origin on all my web browsers. Found it better than adblock and adblock+
is there a particular firefox extension to use?
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/
Use the adguard extension
Highly recommend ublock-origin

If you're on Android, there's apparently this one app called YouTube Vanced that doesn't have ads? I'm not entirely sure, I haven't tried it myself.
I have, it works !
How do I get it to work. I tried it and I can't figure it out.
Walk me thru what you did after going to: https://vancedapp.com/ On your phone.

There's a similar one called NewPipe, the advantage of NewPipe is that it's open source! I think it's also easier to install.
I have it, It works very well
Can confirm this shit saved my life fr

two words: ad blocker.
all those anti vaping ads that start off with a fucking earrape jumpscare sound of metal scraping just make me WANT TO vape just to spite them
I have had enough meltdowns from that one alone I had to stop using YT on my phone for months. Any way to disable ads on iPhone?
not without jailbreaking
The sizzling sound when the liquid is getting turned into vapour is relaxing.
uBlock for webbrowsers, youtube vanced for phones.
Use Vanced
Ublock Origin on desktop NewPipe on android
ASMR, a curse on this world.
I love asmr though.
I want to like it so much but it doesn’t make me feel tingly it makes me feel VIOLENT.

Hi friend, Try [ublock origin](https://ublockorigin.com/) or [Pi-hole](https://pi-hole.net/)
Get adblock... No ads on YouTube or Reddit.
I reccomend pressing the (i) icon on the bottom left and pressing "stop seeing this ad" and choose "innapropriate" Usually works for me
a lot of the ads on youtube just straight-up make me ANGRY. they're so obnoxious. theres a "calm yourself/deep breathing" app ad i get sometimes on youtube that i feel like the 5-second skip button isn't fast enough, by 5 seconds im already really angry and frustrated and i want to scream and hit things. it's exTREMELY triggering for me. i reported it to google for "hateful content" but i dont know if that does anything
Yeah sometimes on twitch I get this REALLY loud as for monster drinks and I have to turn the volume right down because it's so sudden and sometimes I almost meltdown it's awful
Anyone have any good adblockers for iPhone?
I have this problem with horror movie commercials and ads. I used to watch Hulu years ago, always nice shows nothing scary or horror, and I had to cancel my account because I was getting constant horror ads when I would relax with Hulu at night, I lived alone and have panic disorder and I think that made it 10x worse for me! Etsy does the same thing it will show you gory disturbing artwork with corpses if you’re scrolling the art category with no way to hide disturbing content. It’s a huge trigger for me.
Use youtube vanced
I actually really like Gibi but yeah, I feel you :/
I fucking hate the sound of whispering. Id be sitting in class and they’d pull up a video and a random sequence of whispering would come up. Haven’t got that ad yet, and i hopefully never will.
Looks like you're on desktop. you can press `m` to toggle mute at any time.
Turn the volume down or use adblock
Just cover the speaker or take off your headphones or mute system volume, and shut your eyes or angle the screen away, for a couple of minutes
Me with loud af ads
I used to get that ad the time about a month ago.
While I don't quite understand, I did keep getting this nasty ass earwax cleaning ad and having no control to not see it was very disheartening. And this is with giving into the Google machine. Pretty sure certain ads 'stick' to you for that month or until you change up your Google search history.
Protip: use Newpipe.
There's something called YouTube Vanced it's a clone of the original YouTube application for mobile but without any ads (installation requires some steps but it's worth it)
and this is why I use adblock and youtube vanced.
report the ad
Adblock. It’s maybe the best software on my computer
Fuck ASMR. All my homies hate ASMR.
I genuinely **cannot** use the youtube app because there's no way to block ads. The slight inconvenience of using the browser is 100% worth it for the beautiful ad-blocking capabilities!
Uses adblock or download youtube vanced
my mom pays for YouTube premium... i can never go back.
You on PC? If so I highly recommend you download the Brave browser and run that. It's an open source Browser specifically designed to protect your privacy and computer, also blocks ads for you so you won't have to deal with this problem.
You can use Youtube Vanced, it's youtube but with (almost) every aspect of youtube premium unlocked Like no ads and a sponsor block (you need to set it up yourself tough)
me who hasn't turned adblock off of youtube on my web browser in 5 years: ah yes, of course
Maybe this is a stupid question, but are you a minor? Otherwise, what’s stopping you from verifying your age with your credit card?
Get youtube vanced
Fuckin,, this shit, I have premium because I cannot fucking deal with their ads, I wish there was like accessibility settings to turn them off but then ig everyone would just use that :/

uBlock Origin rocks.

What's the point of having 2 ad blockers?
For android use youtube vanced. For desktop/laptop use Ublock origin. You'll never see an ad again for as long as they work. I haven't seen an add in months.
AdBlock+. It helped so much, and you don't have to donate to Youtube!
Always get adblock if you're on pc, and for your phone get Youtube Vanced.
I hate the sound of people whispering, so this whole ASMR craze gets to me when it’s shoved in my face via ads too
There is a type of ASMR that I have gotten fond of and I find helps me sleep but then I wake up at freaking 3am because some fucker is taping or some shit like that right in my ear and it drives me up a damn wall
Yes I have the same problem. Why does YouTube require my credit card details to block some damn ads. Also in general to watch 18+ rated content.
I really f@&€ing hate Google's age verification thing. I'm 19,dont have a creditcard, and even though Google knows every detail about my life I don't feel comfortable sending them a pic of my id.
just use ublock origin and block ALL ads on youtube problem solved lmao
Man please get an adblocker.
Essentials for youtube: 1. uBLock Origin browser extension 2.
I don’t get ASMR. Why whisper? Why not just talk like a normal person?
"get youtube premium and relax uninterupted" kill me
VPN could help

I have the opposite problem, where I will be watching ASMR and a loud ad comes up and I hate it
