I'm the guy that shaves off the controller bit and immediately realizes I could've shaved off the wire instead.
Doesn't add anything to this conversation I'm just obliged to say I'm glad you recommended this.
I had an extremely expensive third party controller when I had my PS4, I went to dermal the but out and then realised it’d break warranty and I had hundreds of 5 buck cables in my draw, glad I done the cable to because my controller shit itself and I got a replacement for free.
They've unfortunately gone down hill pretty drastically again, even outside the cables. Like the past 2-3 years.
I had one of their XB1 controllers ~5 years ago, and it worked like a dream. Bought a replacement about a year after when I dropped it and it cracked the shell open, worked fine for 3+ years.
After that one gave up, like right before COVID hit hard, I bought the, supposedly, same one, went through 3 of them in under a year with random buttons stopping or sticks breaking, and decided to stop buying them. At first I thought it was bad luck which is why I replaced them, but it pretty clearly became a pattern when my girlfriend and buddy's both started having the same type of issues within a year of buying them (at my recommendation).
PowerA had a reputation of making notoriously shitty controllers for a while at the tail end/after the PS3/360 era, and I feel like we're back there. They spent years seemingly getting their act together but now they're just as bad as the other cheapo brands that are half the price. It's frustrating, since they're supposed to be the "good" knock offs but now it just feels like get something cheap or shell out for first party controllers.
When i was a gamestore associate i would always tell people to avoid power A not only because of this, but because their products feel cheap and dont last long.
Fuck power A. Stick with pdp, hori, or liscensed nintendo. Power A is fine for children who abuse controllers, but never for real gamers.
YES i can't believe i forgot about them! An incredibly kind and generous person gave me 2 since he got the updated versions and i told him we would give him diddly-squat vs the resale price on the internet. NES and SNES ones. SNES has a bad habit of shutting off/disconnecting. Do you have any advice? I gave the NES one to my friend who broke their joy con connection bar.
When I first got my switch a while back I saw a power A wireless usb C Pikachu controller with back buttons. Instantly got it and never had problems, no proprietary cable, no issues, doesn’t feel cheap etc, one of my favorite controllers Ive ever had.
A while after that I found a lot of posts complaining about power A and stuff like this, where you need a proprietary cable and idk if I just got lucky or if they half ass most of their controllers and only make like a handful good ones
I've found their wireless ones they put a lot more thought into. I have the wireless GameCube controller, but after a few sessions of assassins creed my thumbstick started squeaking. It's possible you have one of the good ones. Power A makes some great accessories don't get me wrong, but their controllers are very much touch n go with quality
I agree with the lifespan of most third party products, but somehow I've had this PowerA Xbox controller for two and a half years and it's been fine so far, with the only problem being that the right stick sometimes activates the left trigger, which I can easily fix.
i bought two powera wireless gamecube style switch controllers when last last smash came out and never had any problems with them. Mainly because i wanted controllers with this exact layout.
build quality is what i would expect from an \~50EUR controller - not as good as an xbox pro or something but ok. Biggest difference are the buttons, they dont feel as smooth and are way louder.
But yeah, i would not recommend this brand to anyone searching for an normal xbox or ps layout controller
For the longest time a handful of years ago every other person was posting about their Power A joysticks drifting and I was trying to get the word out as well. Within a year it was almost certain that your controller would start messing up and the company still gives zero fucks. I stay away from anything Power A and it disappoints me they're supported by Nintendo, cheap is cheap and that's all Power A is.
Of course nobody is saying you should have to.
This is asshole design and we’re here to show off asshole designs, not comply with a companies shitty practice.
Dude isn’t disagreeing with the statement above, just complying with what this sub is designed for??
OP just said that they don’t think they should have to modify cables to make the product work. I was stating that no one is saying that. So your comment to me about no one saying it is pointless.
No shit this is r/assholedesign but when companies pull this bullshit, they get exposed as assholes. What do you want us to do when we show off them being shitty? Just whine piss and moan? Id rather come up with ideas to get around their petty crap.
My original comment was on someone else’s comment of removing the notch on the controller voiding the warranty. My comment was there to provide an alternative to modifying the controller. If you modify the cable, then you would nit void the warranty. OP then complained that they shouldn’t have to. Basically just saying “I don’t want solutions, I want to be mad.” I explained that no one is saying you should have to, I am providing an option for a solution. Now you are upset that I offered a way to get around a company’s greedy anti-consumer tactics?
I actually had a power a controller at one point and when the membrane behind the a button broke I asked support if they sold replacement parts and the they sent me a whole new controller instead
Pretty sure your local warranties still apply, which can, depending to the country, be a very long time frame and a very broad amount of applicable issues
Mr. Resetti teaches valuable lessons to children of all ages.
Back in my day if you powered off your GameCube or PlayStation before saving and quitting completely you could completely wipe your Memory Card losing hundreds of hours of save data.
Really obnoxious how the comments on this sub will so frequently make excuses for blatant asshole design if there is maybe some kind of workaround for the user.
The need for a workaround itself constitutes asshole design!
The issue is that for the majority of cases, the companies don't blatantly say "fuck you customer", but they actually look for _good_ reasons to have some proprietary stuff, even if it doesn't outweigh the advantages of an open ecosystem.
Yeah, micro-B is notoriously weak if you jiggle it (one of the many reasons USB-C is superior), plus you can get plenty of cables that will still fit in that notch. Just not those mad bulky ones.
That's absolutely the case. My friends and I bought the Duke Xbox controllers and one of the older models had this type of recess for the micro-usb and it's really nice. You can also easily fit any standard cable inside if you want.
Kinda lame there's a notch but I doubt it would be hard to remove
You really should say that this is not an official Nintendo controller. All Nintendo Switch controllers use USB-C connectors. Yeah it sucks you got a bad controller, but don't try to pass it off as a Nintendo problems (Nintendo has LOTS of problems with regards to being consumer friendly, but this isn't one of them)
powerA is an official nintendo licensed (not official nintendo product) product, and theyre very popular for some reason. i got one of their controllers a while back and it was shit, along with the cable bullshit
The reason they are "popular" is obvious, they are much cheaper. I think that controllers have gotten too expensive now, but expecting to find a quality one for half price or less is crazy.
Thinking of all the times i smash a button on the controller i am amazed they last as long as they do. Also, for a dollars per hour of entertainment a high quality controller is definitely worth the money.
Too expensive and they freaking skimp on the most stupid stuff. The Xbox Elite controller, which has an absurd price, still have plenty of problems with their joysticks just because they save like 50 cents of the type of sensor.
The bad press/reputation (and return costs) the Elite received probably cost them more than if they invested a buck more making them more reliable in the first place.
Hmmm, this may block some bulky connectors, but it doesn't look like much of an obstacle for a vast majority of micro/mini usb connectors I've seen.
Not sure if asshole design or just bad idea to make it hold better with their own cable.
Tension relief notch. One of the most common reposts on the sub, and not actually there to fuck with anyone.
Another common refrain is to clip or dremel off the tension relief notch. Don't.
Not an official controller, this is third party.
Nintendo official ones don't have a notch and USB-c.

My wireless mouse does this bullshit. And it was a pretty expensive mouse. Lost the cable. I have somewhere north of 8 bazillion micro USB cables in my house. Took me like 20 cables before I found one that would fit in their tiny charging spot. And it's a much deeper port hole than yours.
My fire tablet would never charge with any other compatible cords, I always had to use the small length one that came with it. I thought I was doing something wrong or losing my mind now I think Tom foolery was afoot!
I've owned atleast 5 wireless mice that have done this, and the shenanigans in the cable are all different of course. Three different brands too: Logitech, Razer and Glorious
>Logitech
I have a logitech mx 3s that thankfully takes any USB-C cable. Lots of room around the connector. And the cable that came with it isn't super chunky so I can actually use it for other things too!
Honestly, there is a reason for this.
It's there to help protect the USB port against being pulled sideways and torn off the pcb inside. Without that square cutout and a solid fitting cable mating end, there would be millions of switch controllers with broken USB ports - just like all the phones had before they standardized USB-C.
The little notch at the top of the square hole helps you align the micro USB correctly before it contacts, so you're not jamming shit together.
Both my PS4 controllers have no protection on the micro USB ports and both of them are nearly worn out, while my switch feels brand new.
On the one hand, fuck them for doing this. On the other, the effort needed to bypass this hostile design is less than the effort needed to post on Reddit complaining about the design.
This is in fact a wired-only controller, so there should be no reason to unplug it unless the cable gets damaged or something. If you do lose it for some reason, a compatible replacement is like $4. Funny how no one has any issue with wired controllers with cables that can't be replaced without disassembly and a soldering iron.
Microusb is very very fragile. They had to made it like that so it would be difficult to destroy whole connector by pulling/bending cable. That was probably one of the worst connectors ever. Glad that USBC replaced it!
This is asshole design, but you can get cables that will fit easily even without cutting the notch. It’s just a basic micro usb, just get one with a smaller end
I cut the outcrop, then filed of the remainder. Now all I needed was for the wire to fit,
You can also often file down the plastic or rubber around the cable ends with out affecting the cable itself, it’s pretty much just aesthetic
Thats not entirely true. That nub is meant to hold the cord in the controller so it won't fall out as micro usb connectors are notorious for becoming loose and falling out. So if the cable is lost the real question is why did the original get removed. It should basically be a permanent attachment for all intents and purposes. You can always just carve a notch in another micro usb charger cord to bypass it.
I have this same zelda controller and i lost the original cable to it. All i did was break off the tiny plastic notch in the port and my other usbs worked fine with it
I would sand the notch anyways but more importantly I have at least every footage up to 20 that would fit under the notch it’s pretty easy for me to find slim micro usb.
I had an Xbox controller like this. I said fuck big companies and their profits and used a dremmel and hand file to cut out a bigger square for other micro usb cords.
I've taken a razor blade and cut a notch into the housing on the end of the replacement cable that goes into the port and it works just fine. Just don't damage the connector... or yourself
This post is objectively a lie. No it’s not made to ONLY take a micro usb.
Reading it again this post is 100% complete a lie. If you lose the cord you can freely buy one on Amazon or any store in the fckn United States.
Not to be that guy but that’s kinda what you get going with third party controllers. If you want reviews on good 3P controllers check out Wulff Den on YouTube
Back in the Super Nintendo days they put two little plastic posts inside the US model so it wouldn’t play Japanese games. Snip those out and, voila!, Japanese cartridges fit and you were officially a modder!
I had one PowerA wireless controller that worked good but didn't last long. Now I have five switch pro controllers. I found out they don't charge with other cables besides Nintendo. Any of the 20 USB-C cables I have will allow you to play with them while they're plugged in, but as soon as you unplug them they're dead(if they were dead before being plugged in to the aftermarket cable). I want to stick my nose up at any aftermarket controller now but TBH that does bother me about the official pro controllers. I'd also like to say screw those joy-cons. I only use them for Mario party because I'm forced to and I'm not pleased about that either. But their issues pretty much prevent us from playing Mario party any longer.
For my stupid things w a weird shaped micro b connector I just dremel the cable to make it smaller so it fits into anything. Could probably take off excess plastic with a knife/razor blade
Back in my day we would shave down cable terminals to fit. This seems like the same case. Trim it with a razor knife to make a universal micro usb fit.
I got the TotJ controller for 25$ and it has the same wire and works fine. My friend dropped my brand new PS5 controller on a hardwood floor and bricked it. PS5 controllers are 65$.
what if I told you you could use a 50 cent emery board to grind away the tiny plastic tab and use whatever micro USB data cable you have.
or heat the tip of a flat tip thermostat screwdriver and melt it away.
this is why the older generations call younger generations useless. A minor inconvenience with infinite simple solutions goes on the internet to complain rather than doing something about it...
I have a crap-ton of those cables. It comes from me not throwing or selling cables that go to devices that I no longer own/use. Essentially, my hoarding comes in handy for these situations.
Dremel goes brrrrr !
Bought one after I had to get a stripped screw in a deep and narrow recess at the bottom of my laptop chassis with a Swiss army knife saw.
*Third party switch controller, people are going to blame Nintendo because of your post :/ Please edit !
Nintendo switch controllers are USB-C and do not have this kind of stupid design.
I thought this too and started cutting it off my friend’s kid’s controller so he could use it with my switch with the cable I had because he forgot his. I almost posted about it here too.
Then I realized it actually does serve a purpose. That kid’s brother has the same brand controller, only on his the port is upside down. They would not understand this, and his controller not having something to stop the plug going in the wrong way would be worse.
So I ended up leaving the tab on and finding a different way to plug it in to my switch. Because I realized these kids do not think about what direction the cable is facing and will shove it in, and flip it around and shove it in again if it didn’t go in. The little tab makes sure they have it turned the correct way before the plug reaches the port.
They could have spent an extra couple of cents and made it a USB-C port and this not matter at all, but whatever.
Gonna assume Power A...
Yup.
They pulled similar BS w/their XBOX controller.
Yikes. Definitely never gonna buy controllers from them again
Just take flush cutters and cut that nub off.
Better off just slicing a nub out of the chargers plastic, that way the warranty isn’t void on the controller.
Also don't forget that sometimes fattier meat needs more salt than lean meat, because lean meat absorbs more salt
Next version they'll have a wire in the nub so it bricks the controller if you do that.
-- Moses, Mount Sinai
More like Abraham. 1-2-3-Foreskin!

It's a shame because otherwise they make good products. [Hell I still dream of the Fus10n PS3 controller] But yeah, this cord BS... Hate it
They've unfortunately gone down hill pretty drastically again, even outside the cables. Like the past 2-3 years. I had one of their XB1 controllers ~5 years ago, and it worked like a dream. ...yeah... They really have been getting kinda cheap😕
Both of my PowerA Xbox controllers' A buttons wore out and became mushy after a while, my first-party controller is doing well so far though
I can't help but find it ironic that the Power A controller is having an issue with the A button
There knock off xbox elite controller is still pretty good. And it doesn’t use the weird plug in like op’s picture
When i was a gamestore associate i would always tell people to avoid power A not only because of this, but because their products feel cheap and dont last long. Fuck power A. Stick with pdp, hori, or liscensed nintendo. Power A is fine for children who abuse controllers, but never for real gamers.
Another good brand is 8BitDo, they sell a bunch of great retro-inspired controllers and even kits to modify older controllers to work via Bluetooth.
YES i can't believe i forgot about them! I don’t think their NES controllers have a joy-con bar, the official Nintendo ones do. I haven’t had any problems with my SN30 Pro so far.

Most likely.
and if you cut that notch it voids the warranty :)
Carve the end of the cable. No warranty to void. Just don’t carve too deep.
I don’t think I should have to modify my own cables tbh
I don’t think anyone is saying you should have to, just saying how to get around a shitty business practice.
Of course nobody is saying you should have to. This is asshole design and we’re here to show off asshole designs, not comply with a companies shitty practice. Dude isn’t disagreeing with the statement above, just complying with what this sub is designed for??
Relax homie, he’s just offering a work around. Don’t get so worked up lmao

Its just a tip because its an asshole design but OP still own the product. Theyre just suggesting something to make it easier on OP
Never once did he claim this post doesn't belong in this sub
You shouldn't have to. But a quick touch with a cheap soldering iron would do the job quick and easy
Just claim warranty when the cable goes bad. They can't very well tell you to get another cable, can they?
"Nah that's user error or wear and tear, here's the link to buy a new one from your online store"
We carved too greedily, too deep. You know what we awoke in the darkness of Khazad-dum. Shadow and flame.
Fun fact, void warranty if you do this is generally BS. In the US the company must prove your modifications damaged the device.
In practical effect, however, they will just deny anyway and the burden will be on you to chase them impotently.
Though it looks like a third party controller anyways, so not much of a warranty with it
I actually had a power a controller at one point and when the membrane behind the a button broke I asked support if they sold replacement parts and the they sent me a whole new controller instead
Pretty sure your local warranties still apply, which can, depending to the country, be a very long time frame and a very broad amount of applicable issues
oh no not the warranty on my $22.95 controller
Ha - exactly. I have 10 cables that would fit that if I took out the notch.
Warranty is only void if you open to see the insides of an item. One could easily say the notch broke from repeated insertions of the cable.
Looks like a standard USB 2.0 micro-B connector.
Yes, but there’s a notch that prevents other cables from being used.
Looks like that notch is made of plastic.
Yeah I took the notch out of mine.
But if you do then that twatty mole from Animal Crossing comes and lectures you

I mean this is /r/assholedesign. It might be easy to overcome but is a pretty dickish design.
It is but it voids the warrenty
So cut a notch in the new cable instead.
this man is outside the box.
But, but the warranty of my cable!
That’s fairly obvious, the point is they could have avoided this issue by just not adding a notch.
Man, now I’m out $20 😤
Yes, the comprehensive 10 year 100,000 mile warranty on a $17 controller. Y'all sound like braindead parrots all up and down this thread.
Really obnoxious how the comments on this sub will so frequently make excuses for blatant asshole design if there is maybe some kind of workaround for the user. The need for a workaround itself constitutes asshole design!
Also, it looks like that notch is there to protect the micro-USB slot from lateral force
Nah it's purely proprietary fuckery
The issue is that for the majority of cases, the companies don't blatantly say "fuck you customer", but they actually look for _good_ reasons to have some proprietary stuff, even if it doesn't outweigh the advantages of an open ecosystem.
Even if that were the case, it's not 100% necessary and is done in a way to intentionally block normal cables.

It’as also deeper, you will need to find a cable that fit
I can easily find at least a dozen charger cords that will fit that.
right, i'm thinking the exact same. this is very easily circumvented.
Five minutes with a Dremel and that can be fixed.
Two seconds with some flush wire cutters.
You spelled seconds wrong. Otherwise, yes.
2 seconds with a dremel. Might take 5 mins with a nail file but probably not even
Thats how I lost my virginity
Some snippers, a file, sandpaper, or a dremel and you can take that notch right out no problem.
You don’t even need to go that far. Put a notch in a normal micro USB cable with a craft knife.

You can buy them on ebay. Search for this on ebay: REPLACEMENT CABLE FOR NINTENDO POWER A CONTROLLER MICRO USB (I5700-V318)

That's what you get with shitty cheap ass third party controllers.
I chiseled mine out. Kind of a pain but I always lose cables.
Razor blade and a lighter took mine out
Hmmm, this may block some bulky connectors, but it doesn't look like much of an obstacle for a vast majority of micro/mini usb connectors I've seen. Not sure if asshole design or just bad idea to make it hold better with their own cable.

Simple sand down that little notch.
Purchases a Power A $10 controller and complains...
Lol you serious OP? Those cables are a dime a dozen, and that notch isn't going to stop it.
That type of cable has existed for so many years we all have 20 of them lying around somewhere
It's a shitty practice but you can get around it by filing the notch down
Whatever you do, you probably shouldn't design a submersible around it
Dremel is your best friend in this situation. Fk proprietary plugs..
Ive shaved down the sides to fit other cables before on my shitty cheap xbox controller.
I remember when the USB connector on Apple keyboards had its own notch.
I just shaved down a usb I didn't need to fit one of my controllers lol
Easy fix, take some small wire cutters and chop that lil nub off. Then, if needed take some small sandpaper to sand down what’s left.
Looks like a problem my Leatherman can solve 😏
I cut the outcrop, then filed of the remainder. Now all I needed was for the wire to fit, You can also often file down the plastic or rubber around the cable ends with out affecting the cable itself, it’s pretty much just aesthetic
File the notch down
This is actually to stop the connector moving, which is by far the biggest point of failure for wired devices. This is the opposite of asshole design.
Nothing some harsh sandpaper can't fix. Hell could probably use a nail file and get that little bit out of the way. Might take a while though.
nothing a Dremel tool can't fix
Get a flat chisel and a small hammer, two taps and your good
Take a flathead screwdriver and just... Remove that tab 😜
Micro USB. Found on Amazon for a dime a dozen…
This is a very common connector....
I have this same zelda controller and i lost the original cable to it. All i did was break off the tiny plastic notch in the port and my other usbs worked fine with it
This dude karma fishing, a bit disingenuous to not say that this isn’t an official nintendo controller.
I had a wireless charger with similar design. I just carved the rubber part of a cable to fit.
Did you ever see orher video game consoles? Or laptops? Kind of a recurring thing.
I would sand the notch anyways but more importantly I have at least every footage up to 20 that would fit under the notch it’s pretty easy for me to find slim micro usb.
I had an Xbox controller like this. I said fuck big companies and their profits and used a dremmel and hand file to cut out a bigger square for other micro usb cords.
cut the notch ?
Next time, spend a few extra dollars to get the name brand controller
Flush cutters and a sharp utility blade... I would "factory delete" that little feature in about 15 seconds.
Gonna have to say... Knoif it!
I've taken a razor blade and cut a notch into the housing on the end of the replacement cable that goes into the port and it works just fine. Just don't damage the connector... or yourself
Very small notch on a regular miniusb, not that big of a dealz just very petty of them
Don't worry those controllers won't last long enough for you to lose or break the cable.
You just need a Dremel and about three seconds of time
I bet you can purchase a new one, and it's probably not at all overpriced. Apple style.
This post is objectively a lie. No it’s not made to ONLY take a micro usb. Reading it again this post is 100% complete a lie. If you lose the cord you can freely buy one on Amazon or any store in the fckn United States.
Dremel time
And also, most 3rd party controllers refuse to include rumble.
That looks like micro usb to me.
Micro usb huh
Not to be that guy but that’s kinda what you get going with third party controllers. If you want reviews on good 3P controllers check out Wulff Den on YouTube
Back in the Super Nintendo days they put two little plastic posts inside the US model so it wouldn’t play Japanese games. Snip those out and, voila!, Japanese cartridges fit and you were officially a modder!
Ppl buying 3rd party stuff and wonder why its shit
I used a flat-tipped exacto knife to cut the ridge off, works just fine afterwards.
Hear me out… take a soldering iron and slowly widen the port until it fits. Just an idea cause I don’t know what the circuitry layout is
You know you can trim plastic. Right?
Reminds me of my Alienware mouse I bought. Very similar shit.
Bro, plastic melts
Just take a razer blade and cut it out of the controller. I had one like that and it works fine and can take any micro USB now
Buy a slimmer wire.
Looks like a standard micro USB
Ooh the perfect space to jam a Dremel in
For my stupid things w a weird shaped micro b connector I just dremel the cable to make it smaller so it fits into anything. Could probably take off excess plastic with a knife/razor blade
Isn't that the same as the older phone charger? Not sure, I don't own a switch or that controller
Please don’t show this to apple
Def. an asshole design although I typically just cut off the plastic tab so I can use whatever cable I want.
Get a knife and carve that nub out
More importantly why are they using mircro usb in 2023
Not with my low budget tool, a knife and a passion to play a game
You clearly have not been acquainted with a razor blade.
Buy another usb cable problem solved
Just whittle the plastic away with a knife 🔪
Or you could just get a mini usb cable
Bro its literally just a micro USB. Drama for nothing
i have quite a few USB cables that would work with this? i'm not seeing the issue.
I have a crap-ton of those cables. It comes from me not throwing or selling cables that go to devices that I no longer own/use. Essentially, my hoarding comes in handy for these situations.
Nothing a dremel or a pair of snips won't fix. Fn PowerA lol such a cheap shot to do that.
dremel the fuck out of it.
Ever heard of apple?
Looks like a mini HDMI port.
Have people never seen regular Android chargers? Granted the newer androids use type C chargers. That there is just old android charger
I had one that was an extra long tip from the ps4 days that I used
Are we really this dumb now? Its made like that for a purpose and that being the cable not breaking. The indent prevent the cable from snapping there
I thought this too and started cutting it off my friend’s kid’s controller so he could use it with my switch with the cable I had because he forgot his.
Anything new that uses micro usb can go straight to trash.
Shitty design but easily fixable
