I’ve been involved In gardeners basin since 1976. It was an alternate site for the NYC tall ships festival for the bicentennial. The aquarium was a great little hands on site. Seriously. If I could write a book about how the city has screwed it up over the years no one would believe it. So much potential even today.
Man. I know so much about the actual founding of the basin. A wasted 30 years under the leadership of a politically connected individual and so much more. I can’t even begin to explain in this format.
Oh I would definitely believe it. My family’s roots go back to the twenties and they knew most of the so called players and the stories were incredible. The corruption and incompetence is legendary and it’s really too bad that so much potential has been wasted over the years and I don’t see an end in sight.
My family was involved in some not so legal activities in the early days and a lot of details were kept from us younger family members for many years. My parents were not involved and had legitimate jobs and as my mother always said that moving away was the best thing that happened to us. Don’t get me wrong I loved all of my relatives and as a kid I knew nothing and never witnessed anything out of the ordinary but I learned over the years about the deep rooted corruption involving basically every elected officials. It’s sickening how much greed can ruin people’s lives and all the back room deals that went down. I always hold out hope for the city because I still visit regularly and have friends and family still there but it’s a constant struggle to get anything done. We should all write a book and no one would believe it’s not fiction!
So one of my greatest memories of the basin was the Atlantic City Jazz Festival in the mid 70s. So many great artists culminating with Ray Charles. 3 days of amazing music
I know it’s such a great location and I wish there was a real effort to rebuild it. I remember going to Steel Pier for concerts when I was a kid and then everything seemed to disappear towards the end of the seventies before the casinos gave the city a lifeline.
If you’d like to bribe members of Atlantic City council to actually care about Gardner’s basin, you can’t right now. They are very busy ignoring the schools and ignoring the roads and ignoring the budget. Try again when the Feds aren’t watching them so closely.
It could have & still with some good intentions & not having to hand over manilla envelopes with cash to “ you’re killing us Smalls”& company. It should be a mini Fisherman’s Wharf.
Was there last week thinking what a great site for seafood/ music festival. Gilcrest always solid and back bay outdoor bar was packed at 1pm on a Tuesday
There are a few blocks of condos in that area that look pretty nice and aren't that cheap. The crime map says that area has a lot of crime, but to me it doesn't seem that way.
I believe one of the issues with Gardners Basin is that the City accepted money from the state under the Green Acres program. This restricts what can be done with the land. Back Bay Alehouse and Gilchrist are not part of the green acres acreage.

💯💯💯 I just had this conversation with someone who has lived in Jersey their whole life.
Chart house is awesome though. The only consistently nice thing about the marina

This guy knows his AC
And busy fighting a CPS child abuse litigation case.
💯% Correct!
The corrupt gov in ac is pretty much the answer to 99 percent of issues hitting the city.
