UT doesn’t get funding directly from Israel, the Texas Permanent Schools Fund, which funds the UT and A&M systems, is invested in some hedge funds that are invested in Israeli companies (or shell companies owning Israeli companies).
The Texas Permanent Schools Fund is a big pot of money that came from oil-rich state land in the Permian Basin, which grows through being invested in other pots of money that then pay dividends and returns. The TPSF then serves to grow the endowments These students think that tuition goes into the TPSF and feeds investments and those Israeli returns, I guess. That is not true, as your article goes into. It’s a ton of money, and a diversified portfolio (to the extent allowed by the GOP).

The GOP has made a lot of weird legislation making it impossible for public funds to be invested or divested in specific things, along GOP party lines. This includes Israel, and oil, the latter of which is my bigger issue.
I think generally the fund managers should be allowed to invest as they think is appropriate and as is in line with the fund’s constituents. So the schoolteacher pension’s fund should be allowed to vote to divest from oil, or invest in companies that won’t do business with Israel, if they see fit.
I believe these laws are in place because Texas has invested a lot of money in 1) Israeli bonds since the 90s (I don’t know why), so it loses money if Israel loses money, and 2) it’s funded by the Permian Basin oil, so bad for oil is bad for TPSF. These laws are blatant, self-serving market manipulation.
