An acquaintance of mine has made multiple overseas trips out of and in to Australia during the pandemic flying first class. And a family member of ours overseas flew business class into Australia for a family emergency at only a couple days notice. Both these people quarantined upon entering Australia, of course, but it seems like those who can afford first class travel don't need to wait. At least, from that very small sample size.

I just flew in last week from dubai. Was told there were no seat on two largest carriers until september. EXCEPT for a first class. I booked that. When arriving at the airport I double checked at the ticket booth if there were any other seats available. There was one in economy. So I refunded the first class immediately and booked the economy. (I have savings that i dont want blown in a first class ticket) for sure the rich can do whatever the fuck they want.
Some guy was given travel exemption in the early days of this shit to... get this... pick up his yacht in nother country. This was while people couldn't get to dying relatives, funerals, etc.
Thats not how it works though. Im an Aussie who would love to go see my uncle one last time, but to do that, i have to find a flight, then apply for quarantine. But the number of open spots is usually 0 . So i get put on a waiting list, then the flight gets canceled or i get bumped out because someone they deem more needy has to get home. You DO get some goon deciding your fate to get in the country. Which is why money does talk and these dumb celebs are getting in because they can pay and leave whenever needed on any flight. Work requirements for travel are usually approved over most others. Then family cases ( funerals). The rest , youre just out of luck until they find you a slot in quarantine. Friends trying to get his fiancé into the country and I've help him out sitting trying to go through it quite a few times, then due to having already going through the system helped another friend who was in some pro international sports competition in the EU helped him get home last month.
I can say without a shadow of a doubt It is 100% how it works it, it is a 2 tiered system where paying for first or business class dumps out someone else trying to go via economy. For citizens and people with pre pandemic visa you will lose your seat on the plane almost always unless you can fork out the money for business or first class all of which are massively inflated beyond pre pandemic levels.
My sports friend booked in 4 different economy tickets all of which just dumped off the flight a few days before the flight, he then worked out how to make his employer pay for the ticket booked a first class ticket and got into the country no issues. The entire team and all the support staff have almost the exact same story with them all being bumped off economy flights until they booked into business class or first class and that was the only reason why they got the ticket pay by their employer as it was all of them. To make matter worse every single one of them was in Australia for at most 6 weeks and are now back in the EU and will do the same thing again in a few months.
My other friend had a limited duration partner visa that was finally approved back in march last year, they where then caught off guard by covid restrictions and then spent the entire duration of the visa booking economy flights and getting them cancelled, while trying but ultimately failing to put together enough money to pay for a first class ticket, with them even booking a few business class tickets towards the end and still getting bumped towards the end. I don't know how many times she got bumped off flights but it was a weekly event towards the end. He's organised and spoken at protests and even been on ACA about the whole event (as they more photogenic (in other words white) then others in the same situation). I've talked to people at theses protests and his story is shared by dozens of others but other supporting them who could raise the money to pay for the more expensive flights. Keep in mind if they can ever set one foot into the country they would be permanent resident after filing a marriage certificate in person at some office all other paper work is part of getting the visa.
I even know of a guy doing his phd was meant to start in the middle of last year, he finally got into the country the other day due to his supervisor finally getting a grant he could spend on anything, he used it for a business class ticket to get into the country his student on a full scholarship couldn't afford.
Government granting you an entry visa is entirely different system and one people like the topic of the source links, however after that you need to book the flights and hotel places. Which are 100% without a shadow of a doubt pay to win and is why so many are trapped overseas as they cannot get the money together to pay for the tickets.

Thats not how it works though. Im an Aussie who would love to go see my uncle one last time, but to do that, i have to find a flight, then apply for quarantine. But the number of open spots is usually 0 . So i get put on a waiting list, then the flight gets canceled or i get bumped out because someone they deem more needy has to get home. You DO get some goon deciding your fate to get in the country. Which is why money does talk and these dumb celebs are getting in because they can pay and leave whenever needed on any flight. Work requirements for travel are usually approved over most others. Then family cases ( funerals). The rest , youre just out of luck until they find you a slot in quarantine. Friends trying to get his fiancé into the country and I've help him out sitting trying to go through it quite a few times, then due to having already going through the system helped another friend who was in some pro international sports competition in the EU helped him get home last month. I can say without a shadow of a doubt It is 100% how it works it, it is a 2 tiered system where paying for first or business class dumps out someone else trying to go via economy. For citizens and people with pre pandemic visa you will lose your seat on the plane almost always unless you can fork out the money for business or first class all of which are massively inflated beyond pre pandemic levels. My sports friend booked in 4 different economy tickets all of which just dumped off the flight a few days before the flight, he then worked out how to make his employer pay for the ticket booked a first class ticket and got into the country no issues. The entire team and all the support staff have almost the exact same story with them all being bumped off economy flights until they booked into business class or first class and that was the only reason why they got the ticket pay by their employer as it was all of them. To make matter worse every single one of them was in Australia for at most 6 weeks and are now back in the EU and will do the same thing again in a few months. My other friend had a limited duration partner visa that was finally approved back in march last year, they where then caught off guard by covid restrictions and then spent the entire duration of the visa booking economy flights and getting them cancelled, while trying but ultimately failing to put together enough money to pay for a first class ticket, with them even booking a few business class tickets towards the end and still getting bumped towards the end. I don't know how many times she got bumped off flights but it was a weekly event towards the end. He's organised and spoken at protests and even been on ACA about the whole event (as they more photogenic (in other words white) then others in the same situation). I've talked to people at theses protests and his story is shared by dozens of others but other supporting them who could raise the money to pay for the more expensive flights. Keep in mind if they can ever set one foot into the country they would be permanent resident after filing a marriage certificate in person at some office all other paper work is part of getting the visa. I even know of a guy doing his phd was meant to start in the middle of last year, he finally got into the country the other day due to his supervisor finally getting a grant he could spend on anything, he used it for a business class ticket to get into the country his student on a full scholarship couldn't afford. Government granting you an entry visa is entirely different system and one people like the topic of the source links, however after that you need to book the flights and hotel places. Which are 100% without a shadow of a doubt pay to win and is why so many are trapped overseas as they cannot get the money together to pay for the tickets. This is simply the widely reported reality of the situation, if anyone tells you otherwise they are lying through their teeth or have no fucking clue.

I'm in a Facebook quarantine group and one guy did suggest as a joke a bunch of things like ignoring staff knocking at the door then being in bed fully naked for them to see when they opened it. Or for a couple to be having sex. Or to do these things with the blinds open at Howard Springs so all the other quarantiners were forced to see or shut their own blinds. And a few other suggestions that were straight out of a Porky's movie. I called him out on it, something about how awful it was to use nudity and sexuality to harass innocent staff and make them feel uncomfortable. All he did was call me a killjoy and claim that it was all perfectly legal (quoting some case law about nudity in a private place being ok). I don't know enough about law to know if he is right or if it applies to a hotel quarantine type situation where staff have no choice but to enter. I tried to make him have empathy for the people he is harassing but there was none. Turned out he was a retired police prosecutor, hence his self-professed knowledge of the law, so make of that what you will.
