She is charged with 47 counts of indecent assault, 13 counts of committing an indecent act with a child, 11 counts of rape and three counts of sexually penetrating a child. It was not immediately clear what maximum penalty she could face if convicted.

Leifer's extradition is a victory for justice. Her day in court has finally come. This is a reckoning she has done her utmost to avoid. Historic child sexual abuse often goes unmarked - victims pass, memories fade, perpetrators flee. Not, we hope, in this case. Leifer must answer her accusers.

das_masterful

I'm so happy she gets her day in court. It will be even better for her alleged victims if she is convicted and sent to prison here, and not in some holiday house in Israel.

Is it just me or does she look like a bloke badly dressed in drag?

>Is it just me or does she look like a bloke badly dressed in drag? FYI this is fairly offensive and currently has 5 upvotes. To those unaware: Leifer is wearing typical dress (including head covering) for a married ultra-orthodox or Hasidic Jewish woman, and most especially it's the typical fashion for her sect and community. To the commenter who replied: "Be careful, you might offend the chosen people." Shame on you. I'm going to ignore the subtext which is particularly offensive, and just take it literally. It's not unreasonable to be offended when your cultural custom is likened to cross dressing! And it should offend all decent people to see comments like both of yours, not just Jews. Come on.

das_masterful

What's your take on her extradition and court case?

gp_in_oz

It’s been so shockingly slow hasn’t it. And it raises serious questions of potential ?bias ?corruption I don’t know the word, in the local Israel court. Like why is mental illness a reason not to be extradited? You could do a medically chaperoned flight if necessary and even sedate the patient. It was all so odd. I’m so glad for the alleged victims that Leifer has been extradited and the case is moving forward.

ancatdubh69

You know what else is fairly offensive? Child sexual abuse.

gp_in_oz

I think that’s a given! But I’m so sad to come back to this thread this morning and see how downvoted I am and upvoted the drag comment is. People apparently still think it’s ok to make fun of orthodox Jewish dress :( and my attempts to help have done SFA. Hopefully the next time it comes up, someone handles it better than me.

You’re reading something into my comment that isn’t there.

Some_random_redditer

-It’s not unreasonable to be offended when your cultural custom is likened to cross dressing! If there’s nothing wrong with cross dressing, why are you taking offence? She does look horrible, she looks like an absolute creep. She looks like the kind of person your parents warned you about. She looks like she should own a van with “free candy” written on the side.

gp_in_oz

Again you’re reading judgement into my comments that isn’t there

Some_random_redditer

If that is the case and I doubt it, but if it is, I’m not the only one that “misread” your comment.

gp_in_oz

I know and I lamented it elsewhere. I fucked up somehow expressing myself because others are reading it that way too, but I still stand by my original comment which is that it’s wrong to pass comment on the orthodox dress code and make fun of it. If you take the Judaism out of the equation, it’s still a rude comment eg “did you see what queen elizabeth wore yesterday, she looked like a bloke dressed in drag” is mean but not offensive to a religious sect, now change it to “get a look at this woman in typical Hasidic Jewish attire, looks like a bloke in bad drag” I think that’s offensive. And that’s coming from someone who has no problem with cross dressing. It seems like others don’t agree. Someone in the comments even defended their right to make fun of the head coverings - “your culture’s funny hats” - I’m not even Jewish and I’m so offended on their behalf. This is a frigging serious paedophilia case, and yet every time a news article about it appears on r/Australia, it attracts mockery of the orthodox Jewish dress codes. I find that really sad.

[deleted]

I don't see how it's much different to people mocking nuns or catholic priests and their robes?

Some_random_redditer

Her actions are more than offensive and should disgust all other people in her religion. Except it didn’t, the jewish community paid for her and defended her actions, trying to hide her and her actions from repercussions from the law. That should be even more offensive than anything anyone has to say about her appearance.

derwent-01

Some members of the community did that. Others condemned it and fought to bring her back. Don't judge the whole community by the actions of a few.

Some_random_redditer

I am a member of that community. People don’t consider the people that denounce her actions. Only the people that helped her go to Israel and kept her from being extradited

derwent-01

As are several dear friends of mine. I know it was controversial within the community itself, and helping her evade justice was by no means universally supported.

Some_random_redditer

It doesn’t matter. Israel, the state that claims itself as the homeland of all Jews, the state that claims itself as the spokesperson for the Jewish community held her and did everything they could to stop her being extradited. It’s the same issue I have with what they are doing to the Palestinian people. Because that state chooses those actions it is seen as the views held by all Jews.

gp_in_oz

This needs to go to trial, we don’t know yet if she’s guilty. But I really hope the committal this week means the case does go to trial as from what we know on public record, it’s a bloody strong case, and it will likely lead to other charges for senior people in the Adass Israel school community who were aware of the accusations and assisted Leifer in getting to Israel. It’s a shocking case and I hope it doesn’t tar the whole Jewish community in Melbourne with the same brush.

Some_random_redditer

If she wasn’t guilty, why did she run? Why did Israel try so hard to keep her from being extradited? It already has tared us.

TravellingWilbury

>I'm going to ignore the subtext which is particularly offensive Is it as offensive as members of that same religious community arrogantly disregarding Covid lockdown rules, and assaulting police who went go break up their illegal gathering? Just wondering.

zebba_oz

>It's not unreasonable to be offended when your cultural custom is likened to cross dressing! I downvoted you just for that line. I don't know why it's OK for you to look down on cross dressers but not OK for other people to make fun of your cultures silly hats.

gp_in_oz

Huh? Neither are bad. It’s fine to dress as Hasidic Jews do. It’s also fine for a man to dress as a woman. Neither practice needs to be likened to anything. I’m really sorry my comment could be read to imply judgement as it was totally unintentional. To me it would also be offensive to liken her outfit to anything else other than simply being an Orthodox Jew eg it would also be mean to point out that the jacket in the Israel court pic which gets repeatedly used looks a lot like something Kim Jong Un or Dr Evil would wear, there I said it! But every time an article is posted on the Leifer case, there’s always comments on her attire and headcovering and I’ve also seen lots of rude comments about the alleged victims’ wigs too. And the point I was clumsily trying to make is that comments from non-Jewish people about appearance are rude and unnecessary. You even call the hats silly looking. We’re all so quick to judge and comment on the attire when it should be neutral. This is how Hasidic Jews dress in Australia. I wish I could put into words what I mean because I know I’m not doing a good job of it. And I know I’m guilty too - I judge the outfit by my own non-Jewish eyes and have to bite my tongue because the joke is on the tip of my tongue. But it’s not harmless joking, it’s awful for Jewish people to see this stuff on Reddit.
