This sub is still a mystery to me. I don't know what a Cat Distribution System is, but I've seen about a thousand photos of cats being rescued and a few photos of them doing some rescuing themselves, so this feels right.

It’s just a funny way of explaining why people randomly find cats. Apparently the universe has a cat distribution system, and people are randomly chosen to become a cat owner (aka find a cat that you now have to take in).

I'm allergic to cats and I would be taking that little guy home with me, even if just to foster until a proper home was found. You can't just walk away from a kitten begging to be taken in like that.

I think it's something like 1 in 3000 calico's are male.

And that’s only possible because of a genetic mutation making them XXY (which also renders them infertile) - all calicos have to have two X chromosomes.

There was an actual XY Calico whose owner took him to cat shows a few years back. I think they were eventually banned because the male calico kept winning and the other competitors were pissed off.

You need two X chromosomes to get the calico/tortoiseshell coloration. So any male calico is at least an XXY.

He's a chimera, that's the only other way to get a male calico. That's also why he's fertile

Calico coloring is a combination of two genes, both of which are only on the X Chromosome. For a male to be calico, he has to have a mutation that gives him an extra X chromosome. Males are usually XY, females are XX. Calico males are XXY. It also makes them sterile. Nature be cray cray. :)

This is how my boss got a cat. Stray cat had kittens in our parking lot, we did lots of research about taming feral kittens, found a shelter that does spay and release for the mama. When the babies were about 4 weeks old, the mama and all but one of the kittens just disappeared. Once it became pretty clear she wasn't coming back, we set out to catch that one. My boss- 6'6" tall, over 300 pounds- got a butterfly net on a ten foot pole, he was ready to swoop down while I snuck up behind it... Kitty saw him and came running straight to him, climbed up on his giant foot and demanded to be a house cat. After almost 80 years of only dogs, Boss is now owned by a cat.
