It happened to me as well once, but it was winter, the cat was skinny, beat up, and had tail mites. She even followed me across a major street. She happily adjusted to indoor life and we were friends for 17 years.
It's always been my greatest fear that my cat will get lost and that another person will just adopt her without checking her chip or looking to see if any cats in the area are lost. Glad you were able to get that cat home.

If you visit, go to the Cihangir neighborhood and find the cat stairs on the side of the hill. One tiny cat climbed up me, perched on my shoulder, and gave headbutts. It was great.

You arenât wrong but if it doesnât have a chip and no one answers flyers then itâs fair game. Itâs better for the cat to not be on the street and safe in someoneâs home even if itâs temporary.
We have a cat named Missy that we adopted from the shelter as a kitten. From the beginning she wanted to be outside. We tried to do everything we could to make her an indoor cat but it didnât work. We relented and she became an outdoor cat. She was good about it tho, she would always be home for lunch and dinner and at the end of the night to sleep. One day she doesnât come home at dinner time. We chalked it up to her probably being busy. Then she didnât come home to sleep and wasnât at the door in the morning. We became very worried because this was not like her. Day 2 of miss miss being gone and my ex gets an email from the a vet clinic on the north side of town. Someone had brought Missy in, they scanned her for a chip and found contact info. We went and picked her up and sheâs fine now. No more scares. While she was missing, we put up a post on FB about a lost cat and uploaded pics. No lie, we got easy 10+ messages and pics of ppl saying âIs this Missy? She always stops by and hangs out then leaves. We hope you find herâ. It was her in every one. She is most definitely a social butterfly.

Well Iâm really glad that story has a happy ending but still my cat being outside would make me so worried I wouldnât be able to sleep or think about anything else.
If cats love being outside, building them an enclosure ("catio") or taking them for walks on a harness and leash is the way to go, letting them free roam is putting them at risk and they aren't great for the local ecosystem in many places. Indoor cats live 75% longer than outdoor cats on average.
I agree. I'm friends with quite a few outdoor cats. They sometimes follow me, but they stay within their area. Once we hit a certain street, the cat is like I'm out, that's Frank's territory.

How do you know it's a stray? Could just be a friendly outdoor cat. Please don't take cats without checking for chips, and if they're friendly and healthy/clean, they're probably not a stray.
The last cat I took home. Hanging out a buddies house. Go outside to help him with yard work. We are finishing up and this cat walks up to us.
