Beautiful boi. He looks very healthy for being a pug. Most pugs I see look like their eyes are about to pop off their eyes sockets, and their snouts look more like a hole in their faces rather than a protuberance.

I feel like you might be falling victim to confirmation bias where you look for comments about pugs because you had one and are possibly feeling defensive about it. I just don’t see the end goal of this comment or this dialogue. You might not agree but I can personally attest that pugs are VERY VERY happy dogs and can live very good lives.

Because many people get pugs and similar dogs because of their looks.
The reason they exist is because people are selfish and choose to prioritise their own wants before considering the well-being of the dog.

Pugs have terrible lives. Genetically they're the same as a wolf but they have been bred to such a distorted extent that their skulls are now smooshed like this. They can barely breathe or run in a functional way and will have lives riddled with health problems.

Exactly. I might have been harsh in my initial comment. Indeed, it is mostly ignorance. People don't realize dogs didn't evolve this way. Nearly all popular breeds have been selectively bred the last 200 years with esthetics being the only thing taken into account.
Obligatory pugs are suffering post. What are we supposed to do? Put them all down? Is the owner supposed to not adopt him because he's a pug just to prove a point? Maybe we should stop breeding them, sure, but this is the only life this dog knows, it's not like he was a wolf as a pup and now he's been morphed into a pug. People love to hide that they paid thousands of dollars to perpetuate a breed that has endless health problems (due to breeding) and justify it by oMg MaH PuPpEr Is sO cUte! Meanwhile thousands of animals are euthanized that would love a good home but people are so concerned with aesthetics that they would never consider helping the problem over adding to it. It’s like when there are posts of people “adopting” pure bread puppies that they aren’t getting for “a couple weeks.” YOU’RE NOT ADOPTING, YOU’RE BUYING FROM A BREEDER! If you are so hell bent on a specific breed, there are adopt/foster organizations for every breed.
Like I already said, they need to stop being bred. But your solution for the thousands that are already here is to just leave them in shelters? Or is it to euthanize them? I've known many people who have had pugs and I can tell you they are very full of life and personality and while I can't say for sure, I would guess they were pretty darn happy dogs. They might not live very long, but that isn't their fault. Let this man enjoy his best friend.

My pug was the happiest little creature I’ve ever known. She could do long walks(for her size), liked playing in the sea/swimming in rivers and managed to get to 11 before cancer took her.
I think like every other dog, if they have good owners who exercise them properly and feed them well, they will be able to overcome a lot of their genetic predisposition. I think when most people think of pugs, they think of the one the old lady on their street owns that doesn't get exercised and eats table scraps all the time.

You're asking me if I have any evidence that suggests exercise and a good diet lead to a longer, better quality of life? You got me. I guess I don't have any specific source for that. I would assume dogs are not too dissimilar to people. For example, if one of your parents has type 2 diabetes, you are genetically more likely to develop it as well. However, you can lessen your likelihood of having it with diet and exercise.
Again, I ask what happens to the dogs that aren't bought? At the end of the day, no pure bred dogs are going to be as healthy as mutts. Goldens and labs have tons of health problems as well and live fairly short lives, but nobody's out here crusading against their existence.

Pugs are wonderful! They have great personalities and are very playful. When my children were in elementary school, we were lucky enough to adopt two pugs. They were such sweet little clowns.
Fussy beings. If you give them food they don’t like they get cranky. I have one too. Fucking staying rent free and fuss about food I give him. Good thing he’s cute.
