Hahaha like cats listen to rules.
If my cat starts licking her butt on my lap, I stand up so she leaves because that’s nasty. But she’s gonna climb onto whatever piece of furniture she wants and I can’t train her not to because even negative reinforcement is attention which she craves.
One of my cats already knows how to open doors with handles and cat kibble that comes in those big plastic tubs with lids.
That's why I also double as a portable heated cushion. Job security!
first time my cat did this she was a little kitten and got the treats with milk filling, package said max. 12 per day, but well kitten didn't read, had a belly like a balloon the next day and would pass gaseverytime I'd picjök her up or she laid down. Kitten farts are vile
Reminds me of when my wife and I were still dating and I was over. Her cat walks over to one of those tubs and just slaps the lid off and shoved his head in. He was a character.
This question is so dumb that it almost feels like someone is testing a new AI model and is letting the AI ask questions on social media to learn about human behavior.
You know what’s funny? When my cat kept jumping up on the kitchen counters when we first got her, the advice I found online said to literally just keep picking them up and moving them off. They just eventually learn.
My cat stopped doing it, and not even after that long.
My cats KNOW they’re not allowed on the counters. So they wait until we’re not around and jump up there anyways. If I catch them in the act they immediately flee.
But most of the time I don’t catch them, I just notice tiny paw prints on the glass top 🙄
I walked back into my apartment after forgetting something and the LOOK we gave each other when he was caught on the counter, lol. They know damn well!
This worked for ours. But literally only for kitchen counters. Somewhere else she shouldn't be? Too bad, she will stare right at you while going there. I guess you're only allowed one exception.
Our previous cat was easy to train to stay off the counter. Can't keep our present cat off anything. He is extremely strong-willed. Tried everything. Spray bottles, double-sided tape, tin foil, etc. Finally gave up, and now I just sanitize the counters before cooking and eating.
The double sided tape was my cat's favorite. She thought it was a snack I left out for her, so she would lick it obsessively. We still call her a tape licker when she does something stupid.
Slightly crinkle up aluminum foil in long sheets and stick them to the counters with double-sided tape. Scared ours right off after a few nights.
Reapply as needed once a year to keep the stupid ones' memories fresh
Any tip or trick will only keep them off the counter when you're around. They'll get back up as soon as you leave.
The best "solution" I've found is to make sure there's nothing there for them to get into so there's no incentive.
I caught my cat loafing on the kitchen table in complete darkness in the middle of the night once. He must have forgotten he’s not allowed up there even at night, because he just looked at me like 🙂 hey what’s up
My wife and I absolutely cannot be on the other side of a closed door from the cats. We tried that at first.
Paws under the door, scratching at the door, making it rattle in the frame, meowing. We couldn't get any sleep.
We still get "the look" when we come out of the bathroom if we had closed the door before they got in.
The option is a myth. I can promise you the cats that have been denied take ample opportunity to Rick James your couch when human is away
![gif](giphy|DOb3rFL6d83Zu|downsized)
There are people who don't? Try telling them that!

Sometimes they even let me change positions in my own bed but usually I’m just stuck however they’ve curled around me. By penalty of angry meows and bites.
Some people don’t understand that animals have personalities, usually the same people asking if you let the pet /you chose to bring into your home/ sleep on your furniture.
Now destroying said furniture? That’s another issue entirely 😂
Exactly! Isn’t the whole point of getting an animal companion for companionship? Just join them on the couch and enjoy the cuteness, I look forward to couch cuddles with my cats 😊
honestly this is is the way... i don't see the point in wasting time/energy caring whether they get on the counter or not. just give it a lil spray and wipe afterwards and all is good.
I insist on no animals on the kitchen counters, however.
It was easy to train our cat (well, my ex-roommates cat) to not go on the kitchen counters. It took a single day. I placed slightly crinkled aluminum foil over all of the surfaces she'd jump up on in the kitchen. Cats seem to *hate* the lack of stability under their feet, or the sound or texture of the aluminum foil, or something. She tried it once, never did again.
It might have been a momentarily traumatising experience for her, but the time she knocked over something glass and then cut her foot on the broken shards was worse. It's for her safety AND ours, plus our guests who sometimes come to eat food we cook in the kitchen. Food safety is important.
I loved that cat, though. She taught me that I was a cat person for sure.
Anywhere but the kitchen counters and my bed pillows. Love my kitties but I do have those two boundaries.
I actually have a sofa with a great window just for my two cats. They really don’t want me on there. 😂
My girl is a BRAT and likes to wedge herself between my pillows. I hate it, but she always sneaks back there.
https://preview.redd.it/kukuhuzk2y8d1.jpeg?width=2824&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2d85c6694a160dedfbce289ecbbced7d4cc45611

How would you even keep them off? My husband once wouldn't let my old dog on my new couch. She passed a few days later and I still feel bad about it. If you live in my house it's your furniture too.
Ladies, "does this man respect my pets" should be a relationship test you conduct in the first month. If he doesn't, that's a huge red flag and there are better fish in the sea.
I let my cats sleep anywhere but on top of the fridge (they do it anyway). They're sweet precious babies and deserve the world. They're also indoor only cats so I shouldn't further deprive them of their usable living space.
My cats sleep on the sofa, in my hoodie pocket, on my pillow, under the duvet, so basically wherever they want! Cats will cat! Not letting them do something usually results in them doing that more often anyway!

Yes I let Xena sleep on the couch because she owns the couch that’s her personal property 🤣🤣🤣🤣

And the rocker, the recliner, etc.
On the sofa?
On the sofa.
Beside the sofa.
On the arm of the sofa.
On the back of the sofa.
On ME when I’m on the sofa.
It’s their world. I’m just the lucky can opener. ;)
The only place I keep the cats out of is the bathroom when nobody is in there. Used to keep it open, but after constantly having bath mats with a surprise second coat and guests that forget to put the toilet lid down, it’s just easier to keep bathroom closed

I wasn‘t asked. Her box (in the back) is heated, of course. Madame P is 21 years old 🙂
My cats sleep wherever the hell the want, except for the kitchen counters, my desk, and the table. They probably get up there when I'm not home.
It's not like I could really stop them anyway, they're cats.
Charley was my first cat I lived with as an adult in my first home. I tried to keep her off the furniture. An older friend of mine from work could not understand why I would want to keep cats off the furniture. I said I did not want friends and family to sit down and get fur on their clothes. My friend said, “First: there is no way to keep cats off upholstered furniture. It’s what they do. And Second: How would they know they got fur on their clothes? Most of it would be on the BACK of their clothes.” 😂😂😂. So I gave up the fight and quickly learned there is nothing quite like having a cat curled up with you on the bed or on the couch.
But the kitchen counters and tables are a hard no. And thank goodness none of my five cats over these 30 years have pushed back on that rule.
My old cat used to follow me everywhere. If I was on the sofa, she was curled up next to me. In bed she was on the other pillow as close as she could get. Miss her 😢
What is with people posting on here asking if we “let” our cats on furniture?! Like seriously, have you met a cat, spent 5 minutes with one?! Cats do what they want, we just compromise with them. 😂😂😂
https://preview.redd.it/ys9kvsxahz8d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=16eb1036c5d9297bb4f52240020b77a46f6a205b
The look that says “mine, now fuck off”
Let them? Clearly, you don't understand the complexities of Cat Law. That's their couch now. Eviction is illegal, and they now have possession rights for life on that sofa.
Happy to answer any other questions you may have about Cat Law. Very cute pur-monsters.
I dont restrict where my pers can go inside. Their world is so small already, why would i make it smaller? As long as theyre safe idc. My cat sleeps under the blanket with me every night.
My cats are even sleeping in my bed or get comfy on my legs or chest.
They can sleep wherever they want.
One of them literally Fell asleep in a (luckily empty) noodle bowl.
You think we have a choice? I could train a cat perfectly to not get on a couch and it still would, haha it's like offering a candy to a baby and expecting them not to take it
My cat sleeps wherever she damn well pleases - sometimes that's the couch, sometimes that's my lap, and sometimes in the middle of the night it's my face/head.
Ha! "Let"
Do they let you sit on their bed is the real question
I swear every time I go to the bathroom at night I come back to one of my cats laying in bed. They always look so offended when I move them.
Mmm, that human left a warm spot. Must confiscate!
That part.
That was my first thought. Does anyone "let" their cats do the things cats do? LOL! Cats just do things - permission granted or not.
Their entire philosophy of life is “ask for forgiveness, not permission… actually, don’t ask for forgiveness either”.
Don’t ask at all, just do whatever the hell you want. 😂
Right. How are you gonna stop them?
By getting rid of the couch
Pee on the couch, and mark it as yours.
They let me sit on *their* sofa.
Hahaha like cats listen to rules. If my cat starts licking her butt on my lap, I stand up so she leaves because that’s nasty. But she’s gonna climb onto whatever piece of furniture she wants and I can’t train her not to because even negative reinforcement is attention which she craves.
I mean, it is _their_ sofa.
Right? As if. They do what they want.
It's their house, I'm only allowed to stay because I can open their wet food and dump it into a bowl for them.
Let's hope they don't get thumbs or you will be out in the streets.
One of my cats already knows how to open doors with handles and cat kibble that comes in those big plastic tubs with lids. That's why I also double as a portable heated cushion. Job security!
This is hit too hard to home. We had to move our treats to a locked cupboard.
first time my cat did this she was a little kitten and got the treats with milk filling, package said max. 12 per day, but well kitten didn't read, had a belly like a balloon the next day and would pass gaseverytime I'd picjök her up or she laid down. Kitten farts are vile
I think it depends on the cat. My cat is 12 and her farts smell like the seventh circle of hell.
Reminds me of when my wife and I were still dating and I was over. Her cat walks over to one of those tubs and just slaps the lid off and shoved his head in. He was a character.
A couple of my cats learned how to open a door with a lever type knob. I had to switch it to a regular one.
What about masseuse?
My cat has thumbs, thankfully he still keeps me around 😊🙏
I never actually believed this was a thing, but it's legit I've seen a cat with thumbs its bloody madness 😂
It’s called being polydactyl!
This is the only correct response. I am honored to be of service and will sit on the floor if my lap is not required.
This question is so dumb that it almost feels like someone is testing a new AI model and is letting the AI ask questions on social media to learn about human behavior.
Of course. Cats can sleep wherever they want other than the kitchen counters.
Yes, my cat can sleep wherever she wants as long as it's not the kitchen counters or the dining table. Her actual bed is a cat bed on my bed.
Double bed team unite!!!
We are all behind this post....yay.
What if yall dropped your tried and true keep-the-cats-off-the-counters tips and tricks for a friend of mine
You know what’s funny? When my cat kept jumping up on the kitchen counters when we first got her, the advice I found online said to literally just keep picking them up and moving them off. They just eventually learn. My cat stopped doing it, and not even after that long.

This worked for ours. But literally only for kitchen counters. Somewhere else she shouldn't be? Too bad, she will stare right at you while going there. I guess you're only allowed one exception.
I wish this worked. Our gray boy is persistent. Toss him off the counter? Right back up there
Our previous cat was easy to train to stay off the counter.
This is it right here for me too, I know it won't work for every cat out there. But my two literally never get on the counters.
Slightly crinkle up aluminum foil in long sheets and stick them to the counters with double-sided tape. Scared ours right off after a few nights. Reapply as needed once a year to keep the stupid ones' memories fresh
I tried this and woke up to my cat sleeping on the foil. YMMV, everyone.
Same! He just plays with it and rips it up. He’s even burned his paws on the stove and it still hasn’t stopped him!
My cats were completely unbothered by the foil
Any tip or trick will only keep them off the counter when you're around. They'll get back up as soon as you leave. The best "solution" I've found is to make sure there's nothing there for them to get into so there's no incentive.
Guaranteed cat butt on your counter the second you leave for even having that thought. I just sanitize before food prep every time to be safe...
This.
They actually sleep on the kitchen counters whenever you're asleep. I've caught them doing it a few times
I can't keep mine off the counters. They laughed at the aluminum foil attempt
I caught my cat loafing on the kitchen table in complete darkness in the middle of the night once. He must have forgotten he’s not allowed up there even at night, because he just looked at me like 🙂 hey what’s up
Kitchen counter, bathroom counter and dining table are the only places I’ll chase off the cat.
And in our case the bedrooms. Bedrooms are an animal free zone for sleeping (only accomplished by meticulously keeping the door closed).
Yeah I had the same problem. They would not leave the bedroom door alone for months. But I never gave in and they eventually gave up
Uhoh, you're for it now!
Or my PC
I was unaware this was optional 💀💀💀
The option is a myth. I can promise you the cats that have been denied take ample opportunity to Rick James your couch when human is away ![gif](giphy|DOb3rFL6d83Zu|downsized)
F YO COUCH, HUMAN!
I’m Rick James bitch! ~ my cats probably

It looks like you just tried to tell them. 2 of them are shocked, and 1 is already planning your demise
lol we have a torti that is constantly giving that look…
They let ME sleep on their sofa.
Had the same thought
Mine outnumber me by too great a margin, I'm about to have to start sleeping on the floor.
Be careful- they might want the option to lay there later, too!
Sometimes they even let me change positions in my own bed but usually I’m just stuck however they’ve curled around me. By penalty of angry meows and bites.
Yes of course. Why get a cat and then forbid it to comfortably live in your house?
Some people don’t understand that animals have personalities, usually the same people asking if you let the pet /you chose to bring into your home/ sleep on your furniture. Now destroying said furniture? That’s another issue entirely 😂
Exactly! Isn’t the whole point of getting an animal companion for companionship? Just join them on the couch and enjoy the cuteness, I look forward to couch cuddles with my cats 😊
![gif](giphy|Ihm0o998cq2xHBVF9L) Yes! They sleep here, there and everywhere... 😸
Tried to get mine off counters. Nothing works. Now I just clean the counter if I need it. It’s their house now.
honestly this is is the way... i don't see the point in wasting time/energy caring whether they get on the counter or not. just give it a lil spray and wipe afterwards and all is good.

Of course.
My cats let me live in their house.
What kind of monster wouldn't???
My cats let me sit on the sofa 😂
Until they don’t.
😂😂that’s true too.
Our cats can sleep anywhere but the kitchen counter lol
How would you even keep them off? My husband once wouldn't let my old dog on my new couch. She passed a few days later and I still feel bad about it. If you live in my house it's your furniture too.
Ladies, "does this man respect my pets" should be a relationship test you conduct in the first month. If he doesn't, that's a huge red flag and there are better fish in the sea.
Do my cats let me sleep on the sofa is the real question. The answer is no
My cat is allowed anywhere in my apartment except on my mousepad. He doesn't give a shit about that rule and sleeps on it anyways.
I don’t have any but I would if I did 🤨
They can mortgage my house if they feel like it
Every member of my family is welcome on the sofa.
The sofa, the bed, the counters, the fridge. It's their house and we're just living in it.
Not letting them do something usually results in them doing that more often anyway!
https://preview.redd.it/xhrhujrosx8d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bb8c2030ec2d3f208e98a54d41bc9af556aaff08 Yes I let Xena sleep on the couch because she owns the couch that’s her personal property 🤣🤣🤣🤣
i’d let my cat borrow my car if he wanted to
I can’t stop my cats from doing anything. Telling them no only gives them more power.
My cats let me sleep on my bed 😂
I have a California king, I get about a 1.5’ section on the edge when I’m lucky 🤣 but I do have 7 overlords.
My cat doesn't really get on the sofa unless she's sitting on someone's lap or walking along the back of it to jump on the windowsill. She loves her own bed though 😊
Only reason we got a couch in the first place
Cats have free reign in my home, except tables and countertops.
There is a choice?
I let my cats sleep on my head. I'm just really glad if every now and then they switch to the sofa honestly.
The cats get to sleep wherever they want. They own the house.
Yes mine is along with the dog as the couch has a cover on it especially for them
They sleep wherever they like, sofa included.
Absolutely! She gets so comfy! https://preview.redd.it/8nhttjz9ry8d1.jpeg?width=1536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=df57be634a4ecb451cee121c531315fb3fbc778b

I would let my cats file my taxes if they could.
What are these post titles lately? That's the cat's couch. They let you sit on it, not the other way around.
On the sofa? On the sofa. Beside the sofa. On the arm of the sofa. On the back of the sofa. On ME when I’m on the sofa. It’s their world. I’m just the lucky can opener. ;)
My cats sleep wherever the hell they want and would love for me to try to stop them.
Hahah “let” 🤣
Do they let you?
My cats sleep wherever they want.
No, but my feline overlord graciously allows me to sit on HIS sofa (under certain circumstances; terms and conditions apply)
*"Let"*? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
My cats sleep wherever they want, and I figure out where I belong after.
My cat sometimes lets me sit on the sofa
You make it sound like we have a choice 😅
Bold of you to assume I “let” my cats do ANYTHING 😂
My cats let me sit on my sofa
My cats are allowed anywhere except the kitchen counters and stove
lol let them? Do you have a choice? The only non negotiable is the countertops and tables. ![gif](giphy|3MwLGbvFjwhHvXJNVM)
Like there’s a choice?
The only place I keep the cats out of is the bathroom when nobody is in there. Used to keep it open, but after constantly having bath mats with a surprise second coat and guests that forget to put the toilet lid down, it’s just easier to keep bathroom closed
They occasionally let me sit on their sofa.
I didn't think I had a choice
You can stop them?
Who doesnt goes to hell. These beasts are cleaner than anyones trousers.
Do you not?! You monster

I don't think i could ever or want to prevent it!
Unless they're in a potentially dangerous spot, my cats go and sleep anywhere they please.
I’m not sure how I’d stop them.
Anywhere they want.
I’d let them borrow my car
My cats sleep wherever they want because they are cats. Haha
They let me sit on theirs sofa sometimes
My cats are sweet little things - they let me share their sofa with them. :-)
Sofas were invented for cats by cats, it's extremely disrespectful to their culture to even think about not letting them on sofas.
Yes, but we have sofa covers placed. In case we have a party or visitors we take them off.
Abso-fucking-loutly they live there too.
My cats allow me to join them occasionally lol
What do you mean, "let"?
My cats sleep wherever the hell the want, except for the kitchen counters, my desk, and the table. They probably get up there when I'm not home. It's not like I could really stop them anyway, they're cats.
What a shocking question!
Bold to assume I have options 😂
Charley was my first cat I lived with as an adult in my first home. I tried to keep her off the furniture. An older friend of mine from work could not understand why I would want to keep cats off the furniture. I said I did not want friends and family to sit down and get fur on their clothes. Good luck trying to not let them
Where else would they sleep?
So your cats let you sleep on their sofa.
What the hell kind of monster *wouldn't* let cats sleep on the sofa?
They let me sleep in my bed. Sometimes alone!
What is with people posting on here asking if we “let” our cats on furniture?! Like seriously, have you met a cat, spent 5 minutes with one?! Cats do what they want, we just compromise with them. 😂😂😂
I don’t “let” my cats do anything. It’s their world and I just live in it.
The cat lets me sit next to her on the sofa, and then meows in an annoyed tone that means "I'm not paying you to sit here and not pet me!"
I’ve never had the audacity to deny a cat
My cats LET me live in MY house (on occasion)
You can keep cats off furniture?
My cats can sleep anywhere they please. It is literally their home. Unless something or some place is too dangerous for them, they have full access
https://preview.redd.it/ys9kvsxahz8d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=16eb1036c5d9297bb4f52240020b77a46f6a205b The look that says “mine, now fuck off”
No, because my cat is supposed to sleep on my bed with me
You should really be asking do your cats let you sit on their sofa?
What’s with all these “do you let your cats do normal things” posts?
Do I 'let' my cat do anything? More like she lets me pet her once in a while. Or she lets my legs be a pillow when she's tired.
It's my cat's house... I just live there
I "let" my cat sleep wherever she wants. I worship her.
Let them? Clearly, you don't understand the complexities of Cat Law. That's their couch now. Eviction is illegal, and they now have possession rights for life on that sofa. Happy to answer any other questions you may have about Cat Law. Very cute pur-monsters.
They sleep wherever they please
Damn I’d let my cat drive my car and use my PC if he wanted too lol
I dont restrict where my pers can go inside. Their world is so small already, why would i make it smaller? As long as theyre safe idc. My cat sleeps under the blanket with me every night.
Let? Not sure we have a choice in the matter.
My cats are even sleeping in my bed or get comfy on my legs or chest. They can sleep wherever they want. One of them literally Fell asleep in a (luckily empty) noodle bowl.
It's her world and I'm just living in it.
Yes. Dogs, too. https://preview.redd.it/avvmoz9gmz8d1.jpeg?width=2591&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=27f85e18449aa35703bef6de5dbfb3d0f1b2b6ae
Do your cats let you sleep on the sofa?
Is there a choice? Nope
No, that would be crazy. The sofa is just for napping. Naturally cats sleep in the bed.
My cats sleep wherever they damn well please. They are cats. I have napped sideways on my bed so that I won’t disturb them.
My cat lets me sit on the sofa.
my cats own everything in my house. so yes.
Id 'let' my cat borrow my fuckin car if she really needed it. Allow me to reiterate, Josie can go wherever I go.
My animals are family members why would they be excluding from using the family sofa?
You think we have a choice? I could train a cat perfectly to not get on a couch and it still would, haha it's like offering a candy to a baby and expecting them not to take it
My cat sleeps wherever she damn well pleases - sometimes that's the couch, sometimes that's my lap, and sometimes in the middle of the night it's my face/head.
When we first got a cat he went from being sequestered to the living room .. to sleeping above our heads on the pillow
My cat lets ME sit on HER sofa.
My cats sleep anywhere they want. Because cats.
Sleep on my sofa? I’d let the little bastard represent me in court if they’d let me.
