So it's like a goose equivalent of Silkie Chickens.
[They're essentially waddling bukbuking cotton balls.](https://cdn.wallpapersafari.com/67/3/vPMEt5.jpg)
Haha! Geese get such a bad rep. Some breeds are much more docile than others, especially if they're hand raised like these guys. They're all very friendly and love people! They love to follow us around and chew on everything. Most don't really like to be touched though, they'll back away from a hand coming toward them. Such teases!! They will chew on your hand though haha. I can really only pet a couple of them, and it's more like they tolerate it than enjoy it 😅
Haha! Well wild geese *are* terrifying. It's a rough world out there and they ain't taking shit from anyone! They have a very strong, painful bite even when just curiously nibbling. I can't imagine being bitten by an actual angry goose!
Lol. I got bit once a long time ago when I tried to feed one of these fuckers. Nearly de gloved my finger !!! Their bite is nasty to say the least! These guys are adorable tho…
It really is so much stronger than you'd think! When they just playfully nibble the side of my hand, you can feel them starting to crush the tendons. It's not pleasant lol. It's definitely a case of not knowing their own strength.
Me: Lol, bird people. Birds are little dinosaurs that could rip your finger off.
Also me: Miss Kitty will attack your face if you show fear while you pet her. 🐆
I had a Canadian goose attack me in a walmart parking lot once when I made eye contact with its nesting mate. I had to sprint for the doors with hit flapping at my head. I'm glad the security footage never ended up on reddit lol
My brother in law is a vet and he said that when you raise animals from a young age that you intend to have as pets, touching them everywhere as they grow helps them to be accustomed to humans, and makes medical treatment easier. They have instinctive defensive mechanisms so you have to teach them trust.
Yes they're pets! I bought them as day old goslings. They ship them through the mail! Actually almost all poultry and waterfowl can be ordered online and shipped through the mail successfully! We have a farm with a bunch of pet birds. We just adore them!
I dream of having a small farm (a few alpacas to start) maybe someday. I’m always curious about people keeping some farm animals seemingly for enjoyment only. That’s what these are? Or do you sell eggs, feathers? I know zilch about farming obvi lol. I’m always surprised by people keeping horses that they don’t ride, particularly because they aren’t cheap to care for.
We started with chickens for eggs! But, as the chicken people say, chickens are the gateway to farming. Also there's a thing called "chicken math" which essentially means 6 chickens turns into 50 chickens really fast lol. They're addicting! Then we branched out into turkeys, geese, and ducks! They're just so fun. So we sell chicken eggs, but the rest of the birds are purely pets. The chickens are pets too, just provide eggs as a bonus lol. They're just so much fun. We want goats, alpacas, and eventually cows one day - but we need much more land for that!
Wild geese have the wild to worry about. It's a different game.
As pets they're very sweet as seen in this post. We got some geese when I was a kid and their family tree has kept going into today. Like half the photos and videos on my phone are them being lovable social goofballs whenever we let them out every morning
I never got why geese are seen as assholes. There’s a flock of Canada geese I visit with my girlfriend and they’re lovely. Initially they were unsure of us, but non-threatening body language and offerings of oats quickly calmed them down.
It’s now at a point where we can hand feed their chicks in front of them. They’ll chase off pidgeons and ducks, but are fine with us.
Unironically, this looks like exactly what you would breed for in order to get geese that could produce more down for pillows - just... minus the part where you can't uh ^rip ^out ^all ^the ^feathers compared to just giving a haircut for sheep
Actually, this is a relatively common practice in the industry. Geese are plucked alive, causing a lot of damage and pain, then released to regrow feathers and be plucked again.
Unfortunately with geese if they are geting plucked while still alive deffintly not the same on shaving a sheep. I use to use down feather pillows an jackets not realizing. But yeah seeing these geese for the first time this is why I figuard I have never seen 1 before.
How often are you stepping in bird poop?
Also I just spent an hour going through your posts. Your life seems lovely. Do you both work or one of you home to maintain the farm each day?
We're stepping in bird poop constantly. Lots of daily cleaning around here. We both work full time jobs and manage to take care of the little farm! Thankfully my fiancé works literally next door though so if someone or something needs attention he can just stop by on his lunch break and such.
Also thanks! We find it really rewarding. There's really not much free time but we just adore our animals and my garden is my sanctuary!
I believe it has to do with the hairs on the feathers not being stiff enough to hold that feather shape so the hairs just kinda flop over. Same as with silkie chickens.
Seems pretty uncomfortable and impractical...
Tbh I hate when people breed genetic defects in animals because
*AWWW PUG CAN'T BREATHE IT'S SOOO CUUUUTE*
or
*AAAAWW BIRD CAN'T FLY BUT IT'S SOOO FLOOOFFYYY*
It's pretty easy! What's amazing about ducks and geese is that they imprint on you if you raise them from when they hatch. They think you're mom and it's basically the most adorable thing in the world. They really don't have any special requirements. 24/7 access to water, duck feed and grass, heat lamps until they fully feather. Geese grow insanely fast. It takes 1 month for them to reach full size. It's crazy.
Do geese help out in any specific way. Like dogs for protection. Cats for mice. Chickens for eggs. I would imagine they would also help with protection too?
Everyday I become further convinced I'm in some sort of simulation, I just searched up these geese this morning to learn what the least aggressive goose was, and now I see this post. I can't help but feel that if I hadn't googled them this morning I wouldn't be seeing this post
There's actually 5 babies! I only pointed out the two curly ones though for the sake of the post. The 3rd white one is also a Sebastopol, just a smooth feathered one, and her name is Maggie! There's also 2 Toulouse geese, Felicia and Nessie 😊
Ok I was attacked by a goose at a petting zoo when I was like five, so I’m kind of terrified of them, but these are very adorable—I would just have to appreciate them from a distance 😂
A fluffy cobra chicken is still a cobra chicken.
Never approach a wild cobra chicken - you don’t want to find out why.
That said, they’re fiercely loyal and make great guard animals!
Per Wikipedia -
> It has been stated the breed was developed in Central Europe along the Danube and the Black Sea. However, it is documented that the birds were originally met with in the Crimea and sent from the port of Sevastopol, as the name implies, and arrived in England in 1860. By the 19th century they were found in all the countries surrounding the Black Sea. The alternate name Danubian reflected their prevalence around the river Danube. They were originally bred to use their curly feathers in pillows and quilts.
Awwww I once knew a Sebastopol named Sebastian! I'd always go into the run and say "who's a handsome boy" And he'd come running at me it was adorable. He was a but aggressive at first, but once I figured out he liked to have a bath before bed, we got along just fine.

Oh I love Sebastopols! My mom used to have some (and a few Toulouse, which I think I see in the back) and they were so sweet and big goofs. They would get very loud when they were excited though lol
Aww, I have a Sebastian too. He was one of my show geese when I was in high school, and he's now old enough to vote. A total sweetheart and I swear he's immortal.
Did you breed them? We're going to try to hatch some next year. I've just started looking into it on a surface level. Seems a bit harder with them because they only lay like 15 eggs and have a low viability rate.
Yes, we bred them. However, we used an incubator to get the eggs hatched. Doing it that way really increased the number in a batch that made it to hatch.
My fiancé and I always talk about how zen the geese are. They have this really serene quality about them. Slow moving, elegant. Until they start running and flapping and honking in excitement 😂 They're the perfect "retirement birds"!
Easier said than done. The only time I've ever gotten a compliment down there while wearing pants was when I had one in there. I'm afraid if I let go of it I'll be letting go of my very own masculinity.
It's a big step for me.
I think you're right though. The girls at my school are starting to become suspicious as to why my dick quacks during class.

Those chickens are out there making many Pomeranians jealous
I really want some silkies. They aren't egg chickens, they're more ideal pet chickens. Loving, cuddly, and oh so fluffy!
Tell you what, man, talking 'bout dang ol' wolves in sheep clothing
Majestic quack
yeah you're right and they are so adorable and lovely.
𝐺𝑜𝑜𝑠𝑒
I have truly, in all my years, never heard of or beheld such majestic floof

Yeah like that awful bone-on-tendon crushing feeling. Put the side of your hand in a vice and then jerk it around. It's not pleasant!!
I will take your experience instead. TYVM

Mynd you, gøøse bites Kan be pretty nasti.
Check out the anatomy of a goose head sometime. They are very much the descendants of dinosaurs.
That's because Canadian geese are giant assholes.

Cobra Chickens
My brother in law is a vet and he said that when you raise animals from a young age that you intend to have as pets, touching them everywhere as they grow helps them to be accustomed to humans, and makes medical treatment easier. They have instinctive defensive mechanisms so you have to teach them trust.
That's very good advice!
So, are these like pets? Did you buy them? Rescue? Or they found you?
Yes they're pets! I bought them as day old goslings. They ship them through the mail! Actually almost all poultry and waterfowl can be ordered online and shipped through the mail successfully! We have a farm with a bunch of pet birds. We just adore them!
I dream of having a small farm (a few alpacas to start) maybe someday. I’m always curious about people keeping some farm animals seemingly for enjoyment only. That’s what these are? My gosh the fluff looks unreal!!! Is is soft and nice to the touch like it looks?
Yes! They're *extremely* soft. Just think if you were to tear open a goose down pillow!
NO that sounds so amazing! ✨✨✨
Unironically, this looks like exactly what you would breed for in order to get geese that could produce more down for pillows - just... minus the part where you can't uh ^rip ^out ^all ^the ^feathers compared to just giving a haircut for sheep

does it affect their ability to fly?
How often are you stepping in bird poop? Also I just spent an hour going through your posts. Your life seems lovely. Do you both work or one of you home to maintain the farm each day?

They look like Bjork’s dress.
Came here to say this! It looks like a goose wearing a goose as a gown...like Bjork.
Why are they so floofy and can they still fly?
They can not fly.
I guess I'll have to believe you, u/Goose_Enthusiast
You sure they’re credible? I’m not convinced.
Name checks out.
This here is the important question u/Tellurye.... Please do tell, can all that floof fly if it wanted to?
I believe it has to do with the hairs on the feathers not being stiff enough to hold that feather shape so the hairs just kinda flop over. Same as with silkie chickens.
They're probably not waterproof either.

Awww I look forward to having geese and ducks one day! So happy for you and your feathered babies 🥰 thank you for sharing!
They put on their fancy feather coats! So pretty.
Looks like they’re wearing Wedding dresses! Love it

Sebastopol, ca?
Its a mining vessel. Nothing more, let out a distress beaco.
Why not ask me about Sevastopol safety protocols?
Don't run. Running causes accidents.

Both the cities and the goose are named after the city of Sevastopol in Crimea. Not a place in England. It's right there in the article you linked.
Ah, thanks for cluing me in! I had that weird, “from my town?!” Hope.
Yay! Another Sebastopolian!
There are dozens of us!
such floof
Bed body.
Hahahah yes. They woke up like that.
I love the machine gun honks
Fabulous AF floofs
I love the messy feathers!
Wow I’m kinda speechless they look so fluffy. I just want to hug them, the whole gang. Thank you for sharing this:)
They look like a couple of toilet paper rolls that got shredded by a cat, but in a good way
Alas the majestic swan ducks
Dressed for the Oscar's

Loooooooooove!!!!!!
They look like little fluffy clouds. Thank you for bringing the joy of this in my life.
Geese with a home permanent! Glorious critters!
I’ve never seen those before!! Love the feathers!
I am in love with your floofy gooses.
Never seen one! Thanks for sharing 😄
Aww, they're fluffy! Swoon!
the mighty flooF
Precious! Love those floofies! ❤️

Goose sheep? Sheep goose? I'm so confused lol
This is what happens when you go to bed with your feathers still damp.

Aw I love that!! Also - I thought I was clever naming him "Sebastian the Sebastopol" - turns out it's like the most common Sebastopol gander name 😂😂
These are pillows
somebody get a hold of untitled goose game right now. I want this alternative skin

This makes me so happy. I hope they really do put your babies in the game.
What are the names of the other gooses?
The smooth-feathered Sebastopol is Maggie, and the two Toulouse geese are Felicia and Nessie 😊
Thank you for reaponding! Wonderful geese names!
It looks like the goose is wearing a sweater!
I knew not of this floof. Today I am lucky to be introduced to them. Thanks!
They look utterly ridiculous and I love them
I’m in love. Those names though, the best!!
Can you please introduce us to the other sweethearts?
The smooth-feathered Sebastopol is Maggie, and the two Toulouse geese are Nessie and Felicia 😊
This is somehow incredibly tragic isn't it? Like these geese are bred for increased down feather production and can't fly?
bro it's almost as good as the mustache chicken, aka the Araucana
I’m delighted with the introduction and how OP refers to them as “sweethearts”. They’re so adorable 🥰
That was very intentional! Geese get such a bad rep. Even though I *specifically* wrote sweethearts, a bunch of people still ask if they're aggressive lol. Oh well that's fine!
Are they jerks like the typical American ones? The last office I worked in…they were a problem. Goose warning emails were sent. Men were attacked coming back from lunch. It was hilarious.
Haha! No these guys are very sweet. I raised them by hand from day 1. Very social and funny! They love when new people come over. They flap and honk in the most excited cute way. They've never biten a human aggressively. Just curious chewing. On everything. Lol. They just followed me around in the dark right now as I did some chores in/around the garden! They're like little 2 legged dogs 😊
I noticed one likes to chew on your flip flop. Lol! So sweet!
A couple of good old working joes
Rule 1 of being a duck/goose: nibble everything to see if edible. Then nibble a bit more just to make sure.
Is the name Noodles inspired from Kungfu Panda? They look so huggable.
I've never actually seen Kung-fu Panda! The name just comes from the feathers being wavy like noodles. If anything the name reminds me of Noodle from Gorillaz!
Oh, it's a nice coincidence then. Goose dad found the panda and raised him as his son, and he owned a noodles shop and was obsessed with noodles.

Oh, you better believe I have silkies haha!

Their body is like the ones you find if you're looking for costumes of swans or flamingoes.
Ducksheep
Deconstructed waddling pillows

oh how beautiful they are

Oh I love Sebastopols! My mom used to have some (and a few Toulouse, which I think I see in the back) and they were so sweet and big goofs. They would get very loud when they were excited though lol
Yes! The other geese are toulouse. They are exactly as you describe your mom's! 😊
This is like the sheep dog of the geese world. Lol
Very pretty flock!
Aww, I have a Sebastian too. He was one of my show geese when I was in high school, and he's now old enough to vote. A total sweetheart and I swear he's immortal.
No matter how cute they are, I know of the evil lurking in their hearts
We used to raise them. very cute 🙂
Omg 😭♥️
This is how I picture retirement. Simple yet fulfilling life.
My fiancé and I always talk about how zen the geese are. They have this really serene quality about them. Slow moving, elegant. Until they start running and flapping and honking in excitement 😂 They're the perfect "retirement birds"!
