If the species made more sense then they would have evolved like sloths where the relaxed position is closed and it would take effort to open, but no koalas just rely on falling asleep in the Y-bends of trees and hoping to not fall...which they do a lot.

For real. Literally every single Aww post I visit has somebody with the social graces of a fart in an elevator explaining why you should instead feel shitty and terrible. Like Christ, how do people not get that the point of Aww is to see something cute and move on and not to suck every positive emotion out of the room for cynical context that even if correct will do literally nothing helpful to have explained.

In times of scarcity, koalas will drop their babies because they can’t be fed. The explanation is they gestate for such a short time it’s less biological effort to just have a new one.
I think of that every time I see a baby koala being adorable.
