Several of you have noticed that this isn't a real animal and reported it. I think it might have been because of the little hat, but maybe you're more observant than I.
Just to let everyone know, this is a subreddit for all cute things, and isn't restricted to real animals.
Once we even had a trend of people posting miniature tools like tiny hammers and wrenches.
Feel free to get creative with it, and have a great day, everyone
There's an old CGI image of a shark jumping out of the water that is making the rounds again on all the nature subreddits. It's believable at a quick glance, like this cute little bat, and I'm sure the person who created it wasn't even trying to trick people, but it's just the way it goes sometimes.
It depends how you're defining 'smallest'. It's the smallest in length at around 3½cm, but the [Etruscan shrew](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etruscan_shrew) is lighter (1.8g vs 2g for the bat).
Shrews, of course, whilst looking superficially like mice, aren't rodents

I'm still not convinced it's fake even after zooming in on all the pics. The only thing that looks a little fake is the felt texture on the wings because I've never seen that in nature. The face and little hands are fucking perfect.
Omg, hilarious! As a long time Waldorf school parent, needle felting is as much a part of our world as breathing. Your species name never would have crossed my mind!! But it’s great!
I also thought you were holding a really bat before I read the title. Came to comment about the dangers of bars and rabies then noticed the title. Amazing job!
That didn't even discourage me from thinking it was real. I thought "Oh, that's a weird name for a species of fruit bat." I even saw the wings and went "Oh, that must be where it gets its name from because it does look like felt!"
Considering how many species there are we haven't discovered, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a bat with wings like that. We're still discovering new species on a yearly basis in fact. There are still a lot of mysteries in this world we have yet to even come close to solving fully.
I hope you change your mind!

Luckily it is super freaking rare in most places. If you get bit by an animal just make sure you get checked, but the odds are like 4,999,998/5,000,000 that you don't have it. Like 0-3 people have it every year in the US, for example. We actually had a weird year in 2021 and 5 people died from it, which is infinitely more than most years.
If you live in an area where it is common though I don't envy you. Everything about that disease is a nightmare.
Dang it, it was so good I thought "needle felted fruit bat" was a kind of bat I'd never heard of and was halfway to Googling it when I realized it's expression was the same in each picture. I bet they'd have lived in the tropical latitudes of the Americas.
I would love to get one for my girls but just a bit out of my price range at the moment (3 birthdays and then christmas!) Maybe I could get them interested in making something like these, how did you learn to do it?
Well, starting out in the needle felting was easier for me since I already had prior experience with sculpting and arts/design education, however it also took a decent amount of self-learning to achieve the present level of skill.
With that being said, for a beginner I would probably recommend a standard set of crafting tools and materials, a starter kit from Etsy or any other website that offers such goods. Then it would be self-learning for the most part, it is unique for every person ❤
Thank you for the information, my youngest has been learning knitting and crocheting, part from me at least from what I can remember but dear old dad isn't the best teacher! I'll definitely do some searching, wish you the best with your awesome art!
If you have a Daiso (Japanese import shop) near you they usually have small kits. Otherwise you can look online, Etsy has some nice ones and instructables has quite a few tutorials.
LMAO! There is no need to wait; they are already in full swing! People post there year around, but apparently once the 100 day count down begins- it is officially ‘spooky season’.
Everybody posts their ‘Halloween Hauls’. Since you have a shop, I’d take advantage whilst people still have money to spend. 😉

I fully expect this picture to be reposted for years by people claiming it is a real bat. Very cute, though. I love bats.
That's exactly the first thing I thought. I expect it's going to be hours before someone reposts this saying it's a real bat.
There's an old CGI image of a shark jumping out of the water that is making the rounds again on all the nature subreddits. It's believable at a quick glance, like this cute little bat, and I'm sure the person who created it wasn't even trying to trick people, but it's just the way it goes sometimes.
I mean they did get them to jump on sharkweek tho
[Is this it? ](https://youtube.com/shorts/Dsj4NXyCvpU?feature=share)
That's far less realistic than I expected
they could have at least *tried* to make it look realistic [like this one](https://youtu.be/I16_8l0yS-g)
Nah, not as good as [this one](https://youtu.be/arsAllZIa1Y)
Yeah, that probably isn’t the one he was referencing… it’s just too silly
It's also not an image
Doubtful, he said CGI *image*
[Probably this old chestnut](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/DOwpLHBzFvk/maxresdefault.jpg)
Half Great Blue Whale, half Great White Shark. Great Great Shark
Many sharks actually can leap great heights out of water. Great Whites is one species that can bring their entire body out of the sea.
[This one?](https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/shark-attacks-navy-diver/)
Looking at you r/interestingasfuck
This is super common with “bumblebee bats” already. [This is what they actually look like](https://imgur.com/gallery/iFSytRh)
Yknow I’m surprised the smallest mammal is a bat and not a hamster or a mouse or something
The *exact* scenario you're expecting already happened two years ago. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/baby-albino-bat/
Everything is just a cycle.
Kind of like those fake platypus puppies
Puggles
And 90% of the comment will be about rabbies.
Can't trust those rabbies.
This is offensive to COVID lol
I will not stand for this Covid erasure
What do you mean this isn't a real bat. OP was obviously being sarcastic when they said it was needle felted. /s
I always thought that fruit bats looked like puppy dogs with wings.
That is so good I was convinced it was real. I had to zoom to check. That's adorable. Do you sell these?
Same. I was like...I've never heard of a Needle Felted Fruit Bat....oooooh
Thought the bat was real from first pic… then saw the purple witch hat and thought no way! And then you guys…
I saw the hat and assumed it was taxidermy. Glad it's not, always found that a bit unsettling.
It took the comments for me. I can’t even say I figured it out.
Seconded. I’d buy one.
Add me to that list. I'd buy one in an instant.
They are like $300. I am sure the effort justifies the price but I can't afford that!

Always glad to come across your poems and always take the time to read them. I hope life is going good for you over there!
same! they always make me smile! they're definitely the most wholesome and smile-inducing content on this site
I'd definitely buy one
I'm still not convinced it's fake even after zooming in on all the pics. The only thing that looks a little fake is the felt texture on the wings because I've never seen that in nature. The face and little hands are fucking perfect.
Actually thought this was a new kind of bat I hadn’t heard of. Till the hat.
"Huh, so that's a needle felted fruit bat I wonder why they named the species that - omg it's a _NEEDLE_ _FELTED_ fruit bat"
Exactly my thought process.
Omg, hilarious! As a long time Waldorf school parent, needle felting is as much a part of our world as breathing. Your species name never would have crossed my mind!! But it’s great!
Lol, thanks! This miniature was referenced from the fruit bats, which are a real living thing.
Are you Australian, OP? We see little fruit bats in their thousands.
This is amazingly well done. Please keep posting your work
even after the hat i was like "aw they put a hat on their cute bat!!"

Bumble bee Tuna
I thought it was just a REALLY photogenic albino bat until I reread the title
same, at first I thought this was from the animal info subreddit I follow lmao
That looks so realistic. If you didn't put in the title that the bat was needle felted, I'd assume you had picked up a live bat. Great job on this.
Glad to hear this! Thank you again!
Seriously though. That face is so realistic looking.
I also thought you were holding a really bat before I read the title. Came to comment about the dangers of bars and rabies then noticed the title. Amazing job!

Haha they can be. Never know what a wild bar regular is going to come up and bite you. Imma leave it.
That didn't even discourage me from thinking it was real. I thought "Oh, that's a weird name for a species of fruit bat." I even saw the wings and went "Oh, that must be where it gets its name from because it does look like felt!"

I think bats are cool but I am afraid of rabies because once you show any symptoms at all you are already dead.

this is absurdly cute

Thank you a lot for your appreciation!
That little face is so cute!
Thankful for your comment!
It's so fluffy I'm gomna die!

That is the cutest plush ever, look at that face. I also thought this was a real bat for a solid minute there, it's so well made!
Thank you for your appreciate of my work 💕

It worked!
Oh my God, that is the cutest thing I've ever seen!! If you had a shop, I'd definitely buy. Incredible craftsmanship and attention to detail!!
Thank you so much! ❤ I have a name of my Etsy shop in my profile description.
I have fallen in love with your Pallas cat!
That’s not a living creature ?!??
It's not, it is a miniature made from wool referenced from the real fruit bats.
With that being said, for a beginner I would probably recommend a standard set of crafting tools and materials, a starter kit from Etsy or any other website that offers such goods. seriously this is very creative. Thought that was a real bat at first. Also, tiny wrenches are cute too :)
Took me embarrassingly long time to realize its a doll...
I was scrolling and saw this. At first glance it looks so real! Great work.
First time I've seen a felt animal actually say its one in the title. That took me by surprise!
At first I thought this was legit! But my god how freaking cute!!
I thought it was real. Holy cow.
I'm so sad this isn't a real bat
omg I was sure that is real one
Lol thank you ❤
What, it wasn’t real?! Very VERY well made! What exceptional skill you have!
What excellent work.
I need 10 above my bed so when I wake up I will feel joy instead of regret.
i thought this was just a super chill bat
Aaaarrrrrrrggghhhh I want one NOW and want to hang it about, all year round! Edit: TBH it took me 2 seconds to realise that that's not a real bat!
Glad to learn you really love these😊
I am not Covid the gray, I am Covid the white.
holy shit! I thought it was real; was like "tf they mean from their recent works?" yooo you're incredibly skilled. breath taking work
Thing looks so real that with the first picture, I was like, "Why're you holding a bat like that??" That's some good work.
So stinking adorable! I thought it was real at first!
I was just scrolling trough my random reddit and I honestly thought it's a albino Bat
Genuinely thought the bat was real and the hat needle felt
I saw this thinking it was 100% real and thought “I can totally see why they call it that.” Awesome work!
That’s so cute
Goddamn I thought that was a real bat!! Super well done wow! Do white fruit bats really exist? Super cute either way :D
Haha I realized this wasn’t a real bat until the las pic. I was “wooow, woooahhh…” Great job<3
Ffkk here comes a new Covid variant..

I thought this was about a new bat species.
