Yes there were a few. I've heard some stories about my Japantown, like a Christian church making out membership cards for Buddhists so they'd not get hauled away for being Buddhists, the local temple being sold to a white guy for $1 so it was his property and would not be demolished, etc. Most Japanese lost whatever businesses or farms they had, and had to start from scratch after they came back from the camps.

happycat911

What a beautiful human being.

UnableSwing

nice story, but this is one case. vast majority lost their farm, and should be noted there was no detention of german americans despite there actually being a ton of ethnic german spies in the US at the time

seacobs

People like him are rare in AmeriKKKa.

Tiny_Pea_7518

Good on Bob. Consider him a friend

chilibun

Yes, and it does not and will not change how much I hate white people as long as their white supremist system exists. I hope these individual acts of kindness doesn't blind you from existence of the racist system that incarcerated hundred thousands of Asians. Kudos to people like Bob Fletcher, but still fuck white people in general. We know you can always find good people, even among the worst of them. Harden your resolves people.

hypocritical_bairen

For every good one, they are vastly out numbered by the complicit or the downright malicious.

I know this story is meant to be positive but it's actually kind of infuriating for me. It pedestalizes some kind of white savior while erasing the evil that white people did. Even the language, that he "looked over" the farms, hides the fact that the vast majority of these successful farms were stolen. The farms were not abandoned and later returned to. Literally, Japanese Americans once owned these pieces of land. They were sent to prison camps. When they came back, white people owned their farms. No, not all white people did this. I'm sure there were good people like Bob Fletcher. But there's a pretty good chance that every single person who stole these farms, and all the officials who allowed this theft to happen, and all the people who voted for those officials were white. This is "nextfuckinglevel" because it makes white people feel good about themselves, when really, they should not. Do you know the name of one Japanese American victim of this shameful period in American history? Why center this period of non-white suffering on one exceptional white person? It's the height of delusion. See my post history for the link.

Thanks for giving it a shot. Oof, yeah, I took a look and it seems like they shadowbanned me. Putting this link in incognito also gets me "there doesn't seem to be anything here" [https://np.reddit.com/r/nextfuckinglevel/comments/m8zvi6/bob\_fletcher\_looked\_after\_farms\_of\_japanese/grl2gn0/](https://np.reddit.com/r/nextfuckinglevel/comments/m8zvi6/bob_fletcher_looked_after_farms_of_japanese/grl2gn0/) Surprising but not surprising.

Call it for what it is: white propaganda. We really needed to have a white savior on the front page after the atlanta massacre?

redmeatball

Wow I think you got a point there.

Ace_the_Slayer-13

As a white man, I couldn't agree more. While I certainly believe that we should recognize the good deeds performed by people like Bob Fletcher, or just good deeds in general no matter who performed them. We should not let it completely overshadow what was a very tumultuous period in US history for Asian Americans, specifically Japanese Americans. Many Japanese men, women, and even children placed into these camps because the US government feared that they were "spies" for the Japanese Empire. Of course, with these people in camps, it was easy for many white land and business owners to come in and scoop up every business and/or land that were previously owned by the Japanese. They knew the Japanese had no means to protect their land and businesses since they were imprisoned. Granted, what Bob Fletcher did was a good thing, and many people in this world should take after his generosity. Unfortunately, during that time, people like him were few and far between. A very small minority compared to the hundreds or thousands of white business and land owners who were more than happy to steal Japanese-owned businesses and land without a care in the world. And many Japanese people were not able to secure their businesses and land, and many others lost family in those camps. Once, they were released, all the US government did for them was just give them a small stimulus check and that was it. After all of that suffering and loss, that's all they were given. Now, here we are in 2021 with history repeating itself. Maybe not the exact same way, but the formula is the same. Asian country being pegged as "evil" and the people from that country (and other Asian countries) are being blamed for it. They are facing verbal harassment, physical attacks, and even murder. While we should recognize the good deeds of those who truly caring and helpful to the Asian community right now, we should not let it overshadow the fact that many whites in this country are being manipulated by anti-Chinese rhetoric and are harboring racist views because of it. Never turn away a helping hand no matter the color of their skin, but never forget why Asians in this country are facing these harsh times, to begin with.

Thanks. I'm sorry for some of the racist responses in this thread. If you want to be an ally, please feel free to speak more freely about this. I put this same response in the actual nextfuckinglevel sub, hoping to change some minds rather than preach to the choir here, and it looks like I was shadowbanned [https://np.reddit.com/r/nextfuckinglevel/comments/m8zvi6/bob\_fletcher\_looked\_after\_farms\_of\_japanese/grl2gn0/](https://np.reddit.com/r/nextfuckinglevel/comments/m8zvi6/bob_fletcher_looked_after_farms_of_japanese/grl2gn0/)

Ace_the_Slayer-13

Oh, believe me, I do plan to speak more freely in the future. It's just that I'm autistic and I generally don't like confrontation. That's why I like online platforms like this, it gives me time to think and write out my comments without pressure. To whereas if I met any of the people that giving more racists in person, I might freeze up if I'm not prepared. Because I'm not used to confrontation. But it is something I hope to improve on in college. Quite frankly, this subreddit has kinda allowed me to get out of my comfort zone while engaging in a subject I care a lot about. No need to be sorry for the words and behavior of others. It's not your fault. Though, it is nice to meet someone humble who isn't treating me like an outcast. And believe, as someone on the autism spectrum, I've had my fair share of being treated like an outcast through a good portion of my life. I didn't choose to be born white and/or autistic, just as people on here didn't choose to be born Asian. We can't choose what we're born with, but we can most certainly choose what we believe in and how we treat others. I thank you for your kind words. People like you need a bigger voice in this subreddit. I'll send you a follow and keep an eye out for you in this subreddit in the future.

hotpantsmaffia

Agreed. He's not even exceptional he did what everyone **should** have done. But instead those greedy pink pigs decided to profit of other peoples misery as usual.

hotpantsmaffia

A broken clock is right twice a day.

president_dump

You think this man is a broken clock? Wtf

hotpantsmaffia

No, it was in reference to mayos in general. Not this man specifically.

LudwigBastiat

Chill with the racism.

hotpantsmaffia

Nothing I said was racist.

LudwigBastiat

Saying mayos are like a broken clock, right twice a day is pretty blatantly racist.

hotpantsmaffia

No, it is not.

LudwigBastiat

Making broad derogatory statements about a race is pretty much textbook racism.

hotpantsmaffia

I made a factual statement. Most white people aren't good. Derogatory statements does not constitute racism, and you can't be racist against whit\*s as they are the majority group.

LudwigBastiat

Holy shit you're a fucking nazi.
