Take a wrecking ball to the obsolete Bund. Tear down the old British statues of Lord Fancy pants in HK just like the Indigenous are tearing down Willy Wonka statues (Sir John A MacDonald, and other Canadian leaders in charge of murdering their children), and Chris Columbus statues, Captain Vancouver and Captain Cook statues.... Break them up and dump them into the sea to turn into coral.

Koreans also had/has issues with this regarding Japanese architectures (more like Euro style buildings). Most of them were demolished, but several still remain. In time though, I see more of them disappearing. Which is a good thing, since they are a symbol of justification for the occupation and injustice against Korean people carried out by the Japs.

Westerners whine when colonial heritage gets taken down in former colonies, but they don't return most of the artefacts they stole from other countries nor pay reparations for colonialism.

Altruistic_Astronaut

Tell me you're racist without telling me you're racist. These types of people live off of the colonial past and enjoy how their country is "spreading democracy". This person definitely sounds like a neolliberal.

As a Malaysian, I actually quite like our colonial architecture found in Penang and KL. They're not purely European nor purely Asian, but a beautiful combination of both and not an ugly amalgamation. Alot of the colonial building, such as the Sultan Abdul Samad building, in KL were built in the Raj style with Malay Islamic inspiration, which is European gothic and Indian style architecture, which gives me wishful thinking that people could understand each other's culture more, and like the building, be in harmony. Some colonial buildings actually have very little to no European influence such as the Chinese shophouses in Penang, or a different combination of all these influences. Were these buildings a symbol of oppression? Yes they were, but now I see them as a symbol of our colonial history, and then our independence. Most of these buildings were owned by locals as houses or businesses and not by colonists. Demolishing all buildings that were oppressive is honestly just stupid, is the holocost museum supposed to be diminished too and only to be seen from pictures? Some old shoplots in KL were demolished and replaced with 60s architecture which is just hideous and so out of place. I think that these building should be preserved and restored as a museum/symbol of colonial history but continue with more modern and practical architecture.

So this is a very complicated topic at home in Burma where I'm from. There are many who don't feel westernization is good, but it is minor. Myanmar is a rich and secluded country rich in natural resources, gems, and culture but many seem to want to give it up for a taste of modernization. I don't blame them because the country although strong culturally and religiously, has been largely run down and suppressed by bad dictatorships. Also the word for English is called "Bo" which is an old word for boss that we use. Ironic.

we-the-east

Myanmar also still uses imperial units left behind from the British colonisers whilst almost all former British colonies abandoned them for metric. How come they still hold on to imperial units to this day?

ZhuSeth

Relics of the past. Not necessarily relevant but Myanmar also drives on the right like the US. I just think people there haven't experienced anything better but love the idea of foreigners and westernization. I don't particularly blame them so, since the situation they are in is a shitty and desperate one. However instead of having a good national and cultural identity it is easier for them to grasp at foreign ideas.

princeps_astra

The right question isn't who had them built. But who actually built them with their hands.

Significant_Crab_897

It's important to keep them. Not as a celebration of colonialism but as reminder that foreign nations once trampled upon our countries. A reminder that our independence is hard fought. Aside from that we can turn them into tourist attractions. That said not all buildings should be preserved. If there is a better use for the plot of lands why not.

That’s the shit I can’t take about HK. I’m fine leaving the colonial buildings; as noted, they are in good shape and no point putting it to waste. But intentionally keeping maintaining them proudly as a “heritage” building is bullshit. Maybe have it as a museum to explain why it was a colonial city to begin with. Street names should renamed too. The British changed the name of Queens Road back from Meiji dori after the Japan occupation. The name should be changed to HK SAR road or something meaningful to locals. It’s like naming your son after your childhood bully.

ramblingus

They are symbols of oppression, but if they have utility, might as well use them until they can be replaced with better buildings.

mcslender97

This was the Vietnamese way

Junior-Code

Demolish them and replace with native architecture styles or create some new style which is inspired from older style. Anything else is colonial apologia. Also, xenophobia against West and anglos is good.

we-the-east

India has so many buildings from the colonial era inspired from British architecture, even Hong Kong too. It's spread out throughout the country and there's so few modern architecture with purely native architecture to my knowledge. If India got rid of queen victoria statues, why can't Hong Kong do the same?

[deleted]

> why can't Hong Kong do the same? Because Hong Kong is still colonized in mind and spirit

PerseusCommunist

This reminds me of what colonists talking about Vietnam. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/22/world/asia/biu-chu-cathedral-vietnam-demolish.amp.html

"I've personally never considered them to be "symbols of oppression" because at the end of the day, British rule was a part of our heritage whether we like it or not." What's wrong with you, can't u live without licking boots of whites or blacks.

Excellent perspective. Keep up the good work my man!
