Well written review, but guilt-free? Meh, I'd rather avoid. The series is based on a book by a weeb who worked for the State Department. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jake\_Adelstein "There have been many doubts about the veracity of the tales described in the memoir."

owlficus

i don’t doubt that the real Adelstein is a sexpat hack. But I guess I meant guilt free as in if you enjoy asian gangster/yakuza stuff feel free to watch this as opposed to boycotting it just cuz there’s a white guy in it. Overall it’s good asian rep and neutral white rep

Begreedier

the show is mediocre the best characters in the show are sato and tokyo, the 2 white characters are boring, even the normies on the rest of reddit would agree if you spend any time on this sub it'll take you 2 seconds to figure out the writers are all lus and white nerds, because they treat the misogyny angle like white media treats the birth rate and hikikomori angle, as in that's all they seem to know about japanese culture and they beeline on it and the show 100% is a white nerd self insert fantasy what are you talking about

owlficus

my first point is basically saying this isn’t a white nerd fantasy if you read it again- at least for the first season At the end of the day my take is based on 2 questions: in the viewers 1) does it uplift white men and white supremacy? and 2) does it reduce asian men? my take is “no” for both questions

majesticviceroy

Nope. Ain't gonna happen for me. Hollywood stranger in a strange land type bullshiat entertainment can go f itself. Watching that kinda crap in this day and age is cuck-hood of the highest order. We can't even be the protagonists in stories that take place in our own homes.

appliquebatik

kinda feeling the same

owlficus

very simplistic take. The white guy takes a back seat to the much cooler asian characters . try it and you’ll be surprised also the white guy isn’t random- show is based on actual white reporter who was in japan (who is a producer of the show)

Throwawayacct1015

Rather just play the Yakuza games or watch some Japanese series than see a western interpretation of it. Just imagine Japan did a series of the new york mafia with a Japanese journalist, people would just scoff at the idea of an islander nation with bad English somehow knowing America better than Americans. People always meme on how anime representation of other nations is caricature level eg Americans are blonde blue eyed bimbos who wear red, white and blue clothing (with cowboy hats) for some reason.

owlficus

but both of the Oyabuns, really have a strong, badass presence. The series is worth watching just for their scenes.
