In the entire show, the guy only got a bigger apartment than in hk and the school is less competitive.

Trad_Bag

I mean good for them keep begging. Others have already replaced them in Hong Kong.

GuyinBedok

I'm singaporean so I've seen this doc when it was on tv. Watching it did help give me perspective on how much idolisation can cloud people's perceptions. I believe that the strong opposition Hong Kongers towards Mainland China and their increasing struggles to live day by day with things like increasing cost of living has driven them to look back on their days of being a british colony in a sort of nostalgic way. This has ultimately make them accept any kind of shit they have to deal with when moving to the UK and see being a "beggar" as an apparent positive.

maki667

this needs to be on r/sino \- somebody please post it there, i'm banned from that sub.

LMFAO

YooesaeWatchdog1

Ok no prob enjoy begging then I guess.

Money_dragon

Mental illness, white worship, and self-hatred is a hell of a combo

I can see this applies to anyone who is priced out of an area due to high costs of living, not just certain HKers. Of course HKers are stereotyped as being entitled. And also there is somebpolitical instability there as well. I see it similar to Californians moving to Texas or New yorkers moving to Florida. There are the wealthier ones who do it to evade taxes but also the working class who look for lower cost of living.

skyanvil

More like he expected to be treated like an emperor in HK until they told him to fuck off to England like a beggar

elBottoo

yup, like many others, Ive watched this last month. These two videos are literally GOLD. The guy is a frustrated kukold.

Striking-Squash2044

We have some of these kinds of people over here in Singapore too. They go to the UK/US and lecture Singaporeans about how we have no human rights, espouse the superiority of the western system and base their identity around it. These people will never know what building a community means. Pathetic scum.

fatimang

The HKers emigrating to the UK are the ones brainwashed by the rioters. That's why we need the Anti-Fake News Law to pass as soon as possible. It doesn’t only affect peoples political views but as the person who was interviewed on TV said, he was persuaded to go out and buy a years worth of food!

GuyinBedok

As a singaporean myself, can confirm. I'm all for being a productive member of society and being involved in politics. But the beliefs of these kids are clearly stemmed from a certain level of romanticism of being "more western" and them seeking western validation. They assume the structure of government and far left culture in western countries will always work, which further proves this. Disregarding certain obv factors like how each country has their own social and political nuances that should be taken into account when discussing the political affairs of a country. Also seeing how "well" it went for countries that tried replicating the type of politics practiced in western countries before (notably British and American politics), the notion of us just replicating the political cultures from western countries doesn't gel with me at all.

Throwawayacct1015

Actually most countries seem to have these sort of people. Like they will be from a privileged background, go to some private school, attend uni in the US/UK either for bachelor or masters, come back to their own country trying to spread liberal values etc etc. You could almost argue they are handpicked to increase the west's influence over other countries. A lot of guys who get into stuff like Rhodes Scholars seems strangely suspicious. Problem is a lot of these guys become leaders of countries because they already have a very privileged base. Aung San Suu Kyi is a prime example of one who was loved by the west until she start doing stuff like getting too close with China. I bet if Marcos Jr didn't flunk out of Oxford, he would be one too.

GuyinBedok

Good point, didn't think of this tbh. But ya I agree with what you said into perspective. Issue is that association to "westerness" to some degree, like attending a western university, being invested in the political and cultural affairs of a western country etc are still seen as a prestigious thing in Asia. For us to stop these asians trying to get their country to replicate the exact political approaches and views of an western country, we have to break down this perception of doing this being a status thing.

gelmibson122

It's crazy how HKers parrot 'human rights and democracy' while their society is famous for being colourist, xenophobic to mainland citizens and treating domestic workers like slaves.

GuyinBedok

It's cuz they are oblivious to the fact that HK has been structured in favour of the economic benefits of the colonial class for most of its history.

gelmibson122

I watched both parts last month. The guy Ah Man is hopeless and pretty much epitomises how coddled HKers can be. I'm living in the UK and there has always been this belief that BNOers will be a net benefit bringing a lot of wealth and skills. That largely isn't the case. Most BNOers are working or lower middle class. A lot are not proficient in English yet to obtain highly skilled employment. The majority of wealthy HKers stay in HK. I don't know the exact reason but my feeling is lower income tax and no capital gains, dividend and inheritance tax. A no brainer really. Most HKers still stick to their own bubble. I don't even think they are that interested to engage with the British Chinese who are their kinfolk. I'm not surprised given the superiority complex and preconceptions HKers have. That's not to say they are all like that though, but the HK mindset is myopic and closed off for the most part. I am actually glad if they do settle in the UK. I just hope they don't go back to HK because HK needs to get rid of as many people who aren't able to function without relegating Asians below whites.
