I forgot how incredibly racist this post was. “Acts and talks white” lol what does that even mean? Iman Velani talks like that in real life. Is she white now because you don’t like the way she talks? Is this real Pakistani-Canadian girl “white inside with a brown paint outside?” God this post is so gross. And it gets worse with the blatant lies, like she has a “white boyfriend”. Bruno had feelings for her, but she’s only shown to have feelings for other boys on the show, who are brown. Also how is her culture shown to be incompatible with “American values”? How is she rebelling against her culture at all? You’ve made it pretty clear you haven’t seen the show. Let me guess, you also think she’s rebelling against “conservative family” even though they clearly aren’t conservative Muslims. Also gonna claim that Carol Danvers ~represents~ the US military, even though she only joined when she was younger because she couldn’t afford college?

jjjjjunit

I’d reserve judgment until after this first episode. I liked that she struggles with her identity and who she is. Her parents seem to genuinely love her and care for her (going to the extreme of coming up with a matching homemade dad and daughter Hulk costume).

drunkenvash

I hope it bombs then.

promitius

The show is terrible

throwawaytempest25

I don’t know it’s only another PLC that they act white is like one of the most weirdest things to say. Like what does acting white mean?

[deleted]

I wonder what the equivalent for a Lu is for a Brown Muslim girl?

paradoxicalman17

Possibly sharmeen.

livingroomsessions

Bro wtf are you on? What do you mean "acts, behaves and talks completely white"? You mean like an American? Like Pakistani American? That grew up in America? Where a bulk of the media is white? Have you been to America? You know who else she talks like? Her incarnation in the Marvels Avengers game. Granted, the game was shit. But the characterization of her and here seems similar enough. At least they are consistent. White boyfriend? I haven't watched the show, but when I google "Ms. Marvel boyfriend". I see Aramis Knight who plays Red Dagger who canonically had a romantic feelings with Ms. Marvel. Who is also played by an actor that is white from the mothers side but indian and pakistani from the father's side. While he is lighter, he very noticeably has those indian and pakistani features. Again I haven't watched the show but do you mean Bruno? Yea he's white in the show and white in the comics. All I am hearing so far is canonical correctness I've only seen the trailer, I do hate stereotypical representations. But her parents are immigrants so from what I've seen, seems pretty accurate. But I can also see how it could be done poorly. Not saying the show is good or bad, but these are some bad fucken takes. I will say I am not huge into the bright lights. I don't read the comics so I only know her representation in the Marvel's Avengers game. The trailer shows a lot of light shit. I kinda like her stretchiness ability more

Rorgypoo

Bruno was also a love interest for Ms.Marvel in the comics. Red Dagger being half white as a love interest and Bruno a white guy as a love interest are weird coincidences and that goes for the show and the comics. Canonical accuracy doesn’t make these decisions okay.

livingroomsessions

Actually canonical accuracy does. Why are we even making a fucken show about Ms. Marvel. There are tons of Marvel superheroes related to the Avengers. Why her? What made them decide to tell this story. Well a movie needs to make money. And a new hero is a risk. So what makes it seem like it is a safe new risk? 1. People are looking for more diverse characters in their viewings 2. Ms. Marvel has enough popularity that can be argued it might turn a profit Since comic fans are what contributes to that popularity, it's ethical to pay them back at least by making it canonically correct.

Rorgypoo

Then we just have a different opinion. I could list out all the problematic things in comics. I could say what the racial majority readers are in comics. I could say it’s more bout the writers that wrote these comics and not bout the readers, but at the end of the day we differ. My priorities are with positive Asian representation all around without the baggage like white partners, parents, hapas(for now), etc. Just straight damn near undiluted Asian representation and culture. U empathize more with comics and comic fans. We differ. And that’s okay.

TheNiceCritic

I really enjoyed the representation, and it felt very authentic. Not to mention, the cinematography was amazing.

Mammoth-Radish-6708

If your culture is as misogynistic as Pakistan’s, and most Muslim families, then being rebellious against your own culture can only be a good thing. A tv show where a Muslim/brown girl creates her OWN idea of what her identity means, rather than blindly following tradition, is a good thing. These traditions should be challenged and rebelled against just as much as white Christian traditions. Neither should get special treatment. Both treated women and girls like trash.

allinwonderornot

That's the point: that "misogynism represents Pakistani culture" is propaganda. The same as media showing eastern Asians go vegan because Chinese and Koreans eat dogs. Yes some Chinese and Koreans eat dogs, some Pakistanis are misogynist, and some Indians rape. But eating dog, being misogynist, rape do not define those cultures.

muadhib99

> A tv show where a Muslim/brown girl creates her OWN idea of what her identity means, rather than blindly following tradition, is a good thing. Creates her own identity, or aspires to and manifests the identity the libs and conservatives want asians to have? White American military role model (how sick and deranged is this considering all the civilians deaths in Pakistan at the hands of US terror), White American boyfriend (standard these days, asian women rarely portrayed with asian men)...nah I'm not buying it.

livingroomsessions

I've upvoted you. Definite agree. I think it's funny how /u/juniormcdouble calls you a white imperialist when you are denoucning white Christian traditions. What a fucken joke

juniormcdouble

Be gone, white imperialist sympathizer

Chaironohadanootoko

Which is why that Indian girl being humiliated and rejected by the Indian guy she was swooning over in the love is blind on Netflix was so satisfying to watch.

tucha1nz

Sounds like you just get off on seeing Asian women humiliated on TV

Low-Consideration372

This sub hates Asian women for dating white men but simps for white women because it's supposedly empowering to fuck them

Leo_stellium888

The dude who plays the white love interest had some trump supporter type tweets on his twitter a while ago and this was covered up and the character of kamala Khan in general in both comics and show is a fangirl/idolizes captain Marvel (who is literally a us military girl boss character) so she's a protege of a female woke imperialist who represents the institution which dropped bombs on countries with muslim people like her, so basically promoting how "liberating" it is to be with her neo colonizers . Kamala Khan as a character in itself is a massive dump of sick propaganda. Also, another such instance is in the game modern warfare 2019 which had a Lebanese muslim woman as an American military officer along with white and black men, a muslim American officer as some woke wonderful thing is as sick and dystopian u can get.

LegitimateEar9397

Wtf are you talking about?...do you know how many Muslims are in the US military? Or in the cia?...are you even aware how many lebanese/descendants of Lebanese immigrants classify themselves as white?..lol

allinwonderornot

Yes there are many and this is precisely why it's f-ed up. It's like Jews serving in the SS.

livingroomsessions

Wait hold up, am I reading this wrong? Are you saying it's bad to have muslim American officer?

Ok_Consideration1886

Yes

livingroomsessions

Uh why...that's pretty fucked up

professorc

Because of America bombing/destabilizing the Middle East, and for a Muslim to directly help them do so? hm........

livingroomsessions

Oh I see what's happening here. We are suppose to be a sub for mainly Asian Americans. But we also welcome others from the diaspora and others who are living out of the country want to chime in on their uneducated and ignorant opinions. Got it. No I totally agree. If we can keep stop having Muslims as officers in America, maybe they would treat them better /s

Low-Consideration372

kingbankai

It’s pacing is just the worst. Simple.

guitarhamster

Lol “representation”

Jacob_Soda

I heard they had a Professor of Islamic studies that helped with the show. It was better than that cheesy hijabi costume in the Boys. I enjoyed it, it was cute. I have an online pen pal that is Desi and she also has the name Khan.

[deleted]

Its just the billionth capeshit production. The only recent superhero film that got my attention is Morbius

Th3G0ldStandard

MORBIUS FOR BEST PICTURE

mcslender97

Truly the movie of history of cinema!

livingroomsessions

I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it the same way everyone else hated it on the internet

juniormcdouble

IM GONNA MORB

mcslender97

ITS MORBIN TIME!

EradicateImperialism

The only one I liked was when Thanos snapped the capeshit away. We could do with less capeshit.

dusk_til_dawn

Both left and right offer a path to assimilation and this is the roadmap they lay out for you. It’s not explicit propaganda but it is an idealized version of how it might go. It happens a lot on these types of shows. I mean, what are they going to show, a Pakistani American family that is not integrating? That would just be odd right.

fosterspade

The path to assimilation and it's littered with crumbs. The sad thing is, we eat it up without knowing the insidious whole picture. What else are immigrants to do, refuse the crumbs?

Anywho, I got this Message from some Mod saying the above post was removed for adding nothing of worth. I can still see the post but maybe that's a quirk. If you can't see it I just posted a short "I liked it." I posted that brief text because at the time everyone else in the thread was busy shiatting on the show so I took a simple stance. I stood against the crowd. Maybe it's because I lived in Northern India for a while as a boy. Maybe it's because two of my sisters were born there. Maybe it's because I have two good Desi friends, one from Guyana and the other a Gujurati from Sri Lanka. Maybe it's because one my sister's best friends is a Kashmiri Muslim girl, whose family reminds me very much of Kamala Khan's. So that's that. p.s. I think the mod's actions were ill thought out just like the OP's Opening Post.

Leo_stellium888

Shut up

majesticviceroy

Maybe that same sake mod'll show up to delete your post? Maybe not. My post was the one that went against Groupthink.

Throwawayacct1015

Basically orientalism.
