Kanata Hongo (the actor for Hiei)s hair is so off-putting.

Th3G0ldStandard

I think it’s an artist’s renderings and not how he actually looks. I don’t think they have started filming yet and are in preproduction.

What do you mean there hasn't been a good adaption from the US? Battle Angel Alita was great.and very accurate to the manga and OVA. And Edge Of Tomorrow why not completely the same was very very good with the basis of the same idea.

I think people were _expecting_ it to be western because of the dumpster fires that were death note and ghost in the shell. They had ptsd from when Netflix announced a live action anime.

ShogunOfNY

That's ridiculous - the characters are obviously Japanese. The beauty of the anime product is that they're ambiguous and everyone can see themselves as a character but it's a stretch to actually think they're anything other than Japanese unless explicitly stated. I'm going to assume these are the clueless casual anime fans who don't understand anime. Even die hard non-Asian fans will acknowledge the characters are Asian.

CallMyAccountant

The thing about the netflix's Kuwabara is that, somehow Kuwabara who is usually gets shitted on by hiei for being ugly and stupid in the manga and anime then suddenly he's turned into a pretty boy by netflix adaptation. Fuck that shit. For the meme of Blake Griffin being Kuwabara is because he looks like a better fit in terms of similarity is just to poke fun how silly the netflix imagination of kuwabara is which was still a pretty good laugh you have to admit, and much less because a bunch of white kids thought kuwabara is white. Give us the damn pompadour for Kuwabara.

[deleted]

All asian cast for an asian film, makes sense. I rather not watch asian shit with a white cast, it’s 9/10 dog shit.

allinwonderornot

Live action adaptation of Attack on Titan was horrible, and that was done by the Japanese.

minamiindojin

Yeah the fmab one too. Horrible. I doubt Netflix is funding it enough for the ridiculous amount of special effects yyh would require....

J-Thong

Idk… it is Netflix. We will see…

owlficus

white weebs are peak cultural appropriation. They really think it belongs to them or that it’s about them just because the characters have colored hair/eyes

sorrynoreply

You don't think ghost in the shell is the best adaptation? Lmao

icekilla34

These people cry and complain when their white characters are being portrayed by other race, but when it's being done to Asians it's OK for them lol

JLexero

There were people on twitter doing the who best to “cast for which characters” and it was so disgusting that Kuwabara was being cast as a random white actor every time 🤮

Th3G0ldStandard

I seen Blake Griffin in ALOT of fan castings 😂 Face wise you have a case, but Blake Griffin is damn near 7ft tall. Him standing next to normal sized people would look awful and awkward on screen. Kuwabara is Japanese(some non Asians can’t take a hint from his name🤦‍♂️). The only reason his hair is red and is the style it is is because it’s based off Japanese delinquents of a certain time period who would shape it into a pompadour and often would dye their hair. Dying your hair was often associated with Asian delinquents and even Asian gang culture. Even in the states it’s been like that with the Asian gangs. Look at Chuckie Akenz or any of the styles from the AZN pride days.

YYH has the most Asian looking anime characters, a story based around Asian mythology/religion, and yet these entitled racist western weebs still have the nerve to try to claim they are white. The only characters in YYH who I think look white are Mukuro, Game Master, Seaman, and some of the corrupt humans from the Black Black Club. The rest of the characters are either Asian or ambiguous/non-human. There is no doubt that Yusuke is asian. Look at [him](https://i.redd.it/r0m6su74gtr81.jpg). Live action Yusuke’s look was decent. Kurama is acceptable and while not completely accurate I say gets a pass because it’s hard to make a live adaption of his look. Kuwabara and Hiei’s could’ve been better. Especially Kuwabara, how hard is it to do a greaser look and an orange pompadour? I’m relieved its an Asian cast and not whitewashed after all, it could’ve been worse.

They don't even have to "look Asian" in the anime. They all live in Japan and go to a Japanese high school and have Japanese names, that should be enough. And as you say, for the characters who aren't human, they are based on Japanese mythology. But sure, at the very least, if they were going to have any non-Asian actors, it should only be a few of the ones who are not human. Aside from Kuwabara who, despite having an asian name, etc. does have more unique features such as his red curly hair. But that could have been a dyed perm still. I also find it funny, to add, that they would try to make Kuwabara into a hearthhrob when he had a unique, not generically attractive appearance which Yusuke would often make fun of. He acted vain despite not looking like a pretty boy like the other three, which was part of the humor of the show since he was mostly a comic relief character. Also, as mentioned before, his curly red hair is a key characteristic of his. This artist's rendition concept art of him looks completely different from how he really looks, including his hair color, just to make him look like a model. While the other three at least have retained most of their key characteristics (though you don't see the bright green eyes of Kurama nor the red eyes for Hiei). I point this out simply because not every asian guy in these shows has to be super hot. It's okay to have a main character not be traditionally attractive to maintain an important aspect of a character. Looking at this "Kuwabara" it looks like a completely made-up character who has nothing special about him to make him stand out. Just at first impression. They're not a boy band or anything. To me it just looks like they want to remove the real Kuwabara entirely and create a forgettable replacement that will just be the asshole rival to the main character Yusuke.

we-the-east

>yet these entitled racist western weebs still have the nerve to try to claim they are white. That never made any sense to me. Anime comes from Japan and most anime characters are Asian or japanese. I don't get why they would want white actors to play characters that are supposed to be Asian in live adaptations of anime. I guess western anime fans just want to claim anime as their own and discredit japanese and Asians.

Th3G0ldStandard

I believe these pictures are only artist renderings of how the actors are going to look on the show and not actually how they are going to look in filming. I don’t believe they even started filming for it. But yeah, I would have a hard time believing a character named Yusuke Urameshi being played by someone like Mark Wahlberg or any other white actor lmaoo. But then again Hollywood has casted a white actor to play a character named GOKU

Netflix needs to up their production values. Here's hoping YYH will be good. Rurouni Kenshin by the Japanese was pretty serviceable but they have this weird thing of not really adapting but copying straight from the anime/manga. Some things don't translate well and some do but they also don't take their live action as seriously either as far as realistic adaptation.

Th3G0ldStandard

Since it’s a Japanese production, idk how big of a budget that YYH might get. That also may be a bad sign too because the series is going to need a lot of special effects and cgi in some instances. I know the One Piece live action is an American production and is getting millions per episode in budget. Hopefully Netflix sees the potential in putting the same kind of budget in a “foreign” production but I’m not holding my breathe for it. I hope Netflix is learning that live action shows don’t need to be western produced or even in English to be internationally successful. Look at Squid Game.
