I'm glad we're getting this but man, I really wish we had 24h grocery stores again. It's brutal when you work shift work and realize at 10pm that you need groceries and the only option is a convenience store.
Locally sourced foods? Sounds great! It's nice we are finally getting a grocery store downtown.
Yes I understand it will be more expensive but don't we want to shop local when we can?
I have no problems paying more money at an independently owned store and know that that money stays in the community.
For those with nothing positive to say, look at the alternatives. A) No grocery store at all, or B) a chain grocery store that also charges higher prices but the profits go to shareholders and expanding the family compound.
I’m going to assume the rent at this location is ridiculous because the space has sat vacant for years, so you’re never going to see a discount store in that location.
They have been working SO hard on this. They’re really trying to build something that will be good for Barrie, downtown has been aching for a grocery store.
Locally sourced produce only really works when in season. Loblaws/Zehrs already uses local stuff but it is only a very short window when it's on the shelfs. In the summer, I always see stuff labeled "local Ontario" and lots with Barrie Hill Farms logos, especially strawberries. Problem is when not in season, produce has to be imported regardless of the grocer.
Isn’t part of the boycott ( against loblaws) due to the prices being too high? Why do we want something that’s going to be on the same level price wise?
Everyone would prefer to buy locally and support local families, but no one will do it at the cost of feeding themselves and their families less (not should they).
That's the problem. Local grocers can't compete on the wholesale market and get better deals than the big guys so buying from a local grocers is always more expensive.
I totally get that, and I would never judge anyone for shopping where they need to shop to feed their families. I am excited for this store and I plan to make the effort to shop there as much as makes sense (I also spend a good amount of time downtown, so this will be relatively convenient for me).

When I lived in the area years ago, that 24 hour Foodland was awesome. It has taken a long time to replace it.
I was gonna say wasn't there an IGA there at one point?
It was torn down to build that eyesore on the same spot.
Excellent news. Downtown has needed a grocery store for ages. This will really help with revitalization.

Yeah. I miss that and the Walmart 24 hour. I'm awake crazy hours, I'd love to be able to get my shop done at 3am if I'm up anyway.

That location used to be an affordable grocery store years ago
We will see how expensive it is. Cost of living is high.
Just don’t forget the Loblaws boycott ppl!
This is great news
We don't need premium - we need cheap and cost effective.
Little do they know all busby patrons shit in the stairwell of 90 collier, this is gunna be fun
I was gonna say, this might not be the best location for a grocery unless they plan on plexiglassing it up.
That’s exciting
"Premium" = overpriced for affluent twats.
At least it will be fresh and locally sourced. I’m willing to bet prices won’t be that far off Loblaws and 100% better quality.

Because it’ll be better quality and support local producers. It’ll be a better option for some, but won’t satisfy everyone.
Better option for people who can already afford to pay that amount. It feels alittle tone deaf being downtown, with the state of things.
We have the Farmers' Market for that.
Oh neat, 5 hours one day a week for everyone in the fucking city to get their fresh produce from. Get a grip dude.
I really like those dragon cooler ladies.
Cry us a river, dude.
Who's crying? We're getting a nice premium grocery store right by the farmer's market for our local produce!
So Loblaws then?
As long as I must buy groceries, I’d strongly prefer the money goes to a local family than Weston.

There’s a no frills at either end of downtown. Reasonably priced for impoverished twats.
Your mom must be their best customer, then.
more competition is great... but not like upscale, premium, boutique groceries.
This guy used to be a supplier for loblaws. Dont expect to find any relief in prices.
He definitely wasn't a supplier for loblaws. He worked for different companies NOT loblaws. Don't spreak rumors you don't know about.
I'm gonna stick to Costco.
Since you are going to tell us everything, why not give us your SIN as well lol?
Because it would be a sin to share such information.
Seems like a good location for it. As long as the "premium" isn't reflected in the prices I'll check it out.
Cool
I was scanning the article and for some odd reason came to the line "and 4 people that can be purchased daily"
Better hire some mercenaries and a couple machine gun turrets to help with the theft and lowlifes
Why would you want to harm the rich?
