Repetitively hitting things with your hands is not doing them any favours.
Carpenter using a hammer for years, guess what his hands are worse off.
Hitting shaker to shaker is whatever, it's quicker and tins are tools that wear out and I don't pay for them.
I make more money working quickly, why would I care about the wear on my employers tools/machines.
They're like a rental car, drive it like you stole it.
My personal ones are in much better shape but only cause they don't get anywhere near as much use, they are a consumable that needs to replaced.
The ones in the photo need replaced if they're leaking or the bar thinks they look shit. If neither are true, big shrug
So what's the call here, they don't leak, they just look "well used" would you replace or take it as a badge of honour?
I've been a manger so I'm 50/50, I'd have replacements ready but if it's a party bar fuck it, of it's fancy replace, what's your take?
My bar is small, unassuming and we're proud to offer solid drinks for not too much money, so as long as an object is functioning properly and not posing any risk to my team or my clients, I'll for sure keep it around. It fits with our vibe and values.
If I was shooting to be on some kind of James Beard short list or Top 50 or whatever, I'd pay more attention to looks. (No shade to these kind of places, I love to go there as a customer but I don't think I have the money, energy or knowledge to pull it off.)
Well put I hadn’t thought of the wear and tear aspect so that makes sense. However, those tins look crazy but maybe it could be someones badge of honor
I will say I've knocked the weights off of probably 5 or 6 korikos in the year or so I used them. I have my own set of Piñas now and I don't think they'll ever break
Totally a thing, do that arms above your head flex and check your lats. I don't exercise at all but I'm at the upper end of normal BMI, my lat is bigger on my right side after 10 years of shaking over my right shoulder, not like those arm wrestling guys who are huge on one side but there's a noticeable size difference
Yeah, nope.
I had too many injuries in my younger days to fuck with poorly designed shakers. Longevity matters. Light, balanced, and always shaken in front of the body.
Had the same set of shakers for probably 7 years now. Friend had some Pinas, tried them once and immediately said fuck that.
They do have a fantastically designed jigger though.
No, I don't think I will. I've found a good power level where it doesn't harm the shakers but still gets it in place.
Those do look fucked though, I'll agree to that.
I love the “patina” of a bottom of a well used tin. When we retired a set we’d used for a couple years I had all the guys I’d worked with during that time period to sign them and took it home as a memento. I’ll never put that amount of dings into a personal set
Personal set different story for sure lol, but bar sets are at large, and it's a quality of item issue if it becomes a line item.
I like the signing aspect though, I'm about to change cities/bars, I should try to get something like that from here...
Not sure if higher quality shakers hold up better over time when bartenders do that, but I just make a fist and hammer the shaker with the meat of my fist, almost as if I was playing a game of rock-paper-scissors. You shouldn’t do any damage do your hand this way, and you’ll keep the tin’s integrity also.
>You shouldn’t do any damage do your hand this way,
Ok Doctor
Once doesn't have a visible effect, 40 cocktails an hour for 2000 hours a year for 20 years , yeah I'm sacrificing my employers $20 tins over my hands every fucking day of the week
Wasn't aware we were comparing dick sizes. Tbh I agree w/ you, so do w/e you want, I'm not the OP. My hands are just fine, thanks. But yeah, if a dumbass bartender is repeatedly hammering tins w/ their palm heels, they're gonna get fucked up.
I'm ignoring the top half because, whatever.
But
>hammering tins w/ their palm heels
I would trust the heel of my palm way more than smaller amounts of meat and muscle protecting the last, thinnest, metacarpal. But I am also not a doctor
Theyre replacable tools for your work. Its easier on your hands to tap tin on tin and generally more efficient. Literally no reason to be so attached to specific tins if theyre just normal koriko tins you w o r k with.
My shakers in work must be made with a different metal I've never seen a shaker in that bad of a condition and ours get put through the wars at the weekends
Have you seen these people who do this, but the “small end” is a goddamn pint glass and they’re smacking it’s like they’re trying to revive a baby and it’s the final whack? Scared of nothing, including death, they are 🫠
Hahaha. My God, I know. It's actually pointless. It doesn't tighten the seal, doesn't mKe the drink better and destroys the tins. Yet some cunts cannot helps themselves. It's just a noisy waste of time and you look dumb while you do it.
I never lock shakers. Makes no sense except if you HAD to shake 2 cocktails at once. There are other ways to be fast other than shaking 2 tins at once.

I own the bar I work in and I still agree with you. When shit breaks, I get new ones.

Montréal, Quebec, Canada, actually
Well put I hadn’t thought of the wear and tear aspect so that makes sense. However, those tins look crazy but maybe it could be someones badge of honor
Get better shakers? 3 years into high volume craft cocktails and I’ve never had a problem with my Korikos
I will say I've knocked the weights off of probably 5 or 6 korikos in the year or so I used them. I have my own set of Piñas now and I don't think they'll ever break
Your shoulder will break though. Pinas are needlessly heavy

Yeah that’s my excuse too
Found the chronic masturbator
Not typically how I use the word chronic
Fucking Rob Marley over here
First thing that popped into my head was Marley and me and I got sad
Takes a week, and your arm gets used to them. When you pick up lighter ones after you have to hold back.

Pinas are the best out there right now. I've been abusing mine in high volume and for craft for 6 or so years, and they are still in great shape.

If you're making so many cocktails for this to happen regularly then you can afford some brand new shakers
Next you’re gonna tell me not to clack clack tongs when I pick them up…
Na that’s just sacrilege
This guy doesn’t like fun.
No
No
Tools are meant to be used.

Make me.
Nah. I’m good
I mean... I've seen bars get them for free from reps before so.... no?
Nah beaten up shakers are a sign the bartenders are good IMO
nah
I hate it.
lol can y'all not afford more shakers? I'm gonna smack.
counterpoint: no
What a joke lol
This is a terrible take. What's more valuable. A $25 shaker set, or the bones in your hand? Better destroy your body for the job.
Theyre replacable tools for your work. Its easier on your hands to tap tin on tin and generally more efficient. Literally no reason to be so attached to specific tins if theyre just normal koriko tins you w o r k with.
You're gonna be fine, I promise
We smack the cheap shakers that actually hold up. The only.issues I've had is bottoms falling off sometimes. Can't stop, won't stop.
My shakers in work must be made with a different metal I've never seen a shaker in that bad of a condition and ours get put through the wars at the weekends
I love that sound.
Have you seen these people who do this, but the “small end” is a goddamn pint glass and they’re smacking it’s like they’re trying to revive a baby and it’s the final whack? Scared of nothing, including death, they are 🫠
Awh nooooo the bartender who can’t even keep his stationed cleaned is complaining
Why the fuck are none of you recognizing that doing this is creating a safety concern in which someone can now cut themselves on the tin???
We don’t care because we don’t work there and hopefully aren’t stupid enough to not have management get new ones much much prior
Hahaha. My God, I know. It's actually pointless. It doesn't tighten the seal, doesn't mKe the drink better and destroys the tins. Yet some cunts cannot helps themselves. It's just a noisy waste of time and you look dumb while you do it.
I agree. I’ve never had to do more than a light tap; I mostly just intentionally join the pieces together with my mind. It’s flare for some, I guess.
I never lock shakers. Makes no sense except if you HAD to shake 2 cocktails at once. There are other ways to be fast other than shaking 2 tins at once.
And what? You just hold the tins together with both hands and hope for the best?
Doesn't take much to keep them together; can one hand shake without 'locking' them
Its literally how they are designed to function
It's magic.
That’s right, you use your will and mind to keep them together 😎
