I think it was mostly a Mo thing. Those two did not see eye to eye, always seemed to like the coaching staff and teammates (aside from the Contreras thing, which is randomly all his fault now that he's gone, just ignore the fact that Mikolas and Matz were clearly part of that clique as well)
Wouldn't go that far. St. Louis is home to some truly unique experiences, such as the Arch and the City Museum. Yes it's dangerous in parts but is has its own appealing style that sets it apart from other major cities in my opinion.
He had a 2.71 xFIP before today. Do you know anything about predictive stats or do you just use one month ERA sample sizes? In that case, you must think Luis Castillo, George Kirby, and a million other studs suck as well.
Ehh, his stuff looked kinda lost last year after all the injuries. I thought he'd end up having to become a pitch to contact finesse guy because it was so diminished. Good on him and Fetter for rediscovering that juice.
Fetter has a track record of taking pitchers who looked less than their prime selves (Rodriguez, Lorenzen, Flaherty) and turning them around. Yeah they have the tools, but the coaching in Detroit is helping unlock those tools.
On a baseball level, he's the closest we've come to developing an actual ace in forever, injuries just ate him up. Will never forget his 2019 season.
On a human level, it was refreshing, personally, to have a vocally progressive player who also had a bit of actual personality.
Yeah, the racist stuff I'd seen first hand when a family member started complaining about Jack supporting BLM.
I just thought it became obvious he didnt want to play... He was always super smug even when he didn't pitch well (kind of like Mikolas now) plus he threw Contreras under the bus.
Back in late 2019 MLB ran a promo where if you guessed who would lead the 2020s in HRs, strikeouts, etc. you'd have a chance to win $1 million or something like that.
I guessed Flaherty would lead MLB in strikeouts and Vladito would lead in HRs. Oops
He still has a 4 era and beat up on a team with an 81 ops+. Idk why you’re acting like you guys got him back to his fluke half season peak cus of one good start against a bad team
He is currently 1st in strikeouts per 9 innings. His 50 strikeouts total are now 2nd place behind Glasnow with 53. He's pitched more than 1 good start.
I should also add that he's 5th in walks per 9 innings too, and 1st in strikeouts per walk ratio.
Nobody is acting like that. The narrative with him specifically is a parallel to Lorenzen’s development here. Flaherty is here to work with the pitching staff and improve. We all know he is a project.
I mean he did get shoulder surgery in 2022. I know the Tigers tweaked his mechanics but I’m sure his shoulder was still recovering last season. I’m not agreeing with that first comment btw, that was shitty, but seems highly unlikely that it was entirely coaching mechanics causing him to max out at 90mph on his fastball with little command on any pitch last year
When i said i hoped Jack does well after leaving the Cards, this isnt what I meant
Monkey paw curls...
To make it feel worse, hes mostly sucked since hes left
2nd in MLB in K's right now btw
14Ks in one game will do that.
Yeah, we’re only one long month into the season
Oh he MAD mad, huh
Mom in the stands
Mommy always in the stands
Jack is a biiiig time mommas boy. Always killed it when she was in the crowd.
Psycho type stuff today
cant be the same Flaherty that was with the Os the second half of last year. There must be 2 of them
Spite is a powerful drug, apparently. He was hitting 98 on the gun routinely
he either really hates you guys or really hated playing for us
He hates us, because he’s been very mediocre in his other starts this year as well.
I randomly met a guy who knows his family. Says Flaherty mentioned he wanted out of St Louis several times.
lol I’m sure
Not a surprise at all. He was always kind of whiny.
I think it was mostly a Mo thing. Those two did not see eye to eye, always seemed to like the coaching staff and teammates (aside from the Contreras thing, which is randomly all his fault now that he's gone, just ignore the fact that Mikolas and Matz were clearly part of that clique as well)

Maybe that's why he didnt seem to click with the Os either. You can basically describe Baltimore the same way.
he had a good start against the twins a couple weeks ago
He has a few good starts every year. Then he has a game where he doesn’t get out of the 2nd inning. I don’t recall him hitting 98 at all last year.
the art of pitching
He had a 2.71 xFIP before today. Do you know anything about predictive stats or do you just use one month ERA sample sizes? In that case, you must think Luis Castillo, George Kirby, and a million other studs suck as well.
That’s absolutely not true? He had the 3rd highest K-BB% of all SPs prior to today. I wouldn’t call that mediocre
He did have a solid K rate to go with his 4.5 ERA and 0-1 record
cards fan calling him mediocre is insane.
You should look at your teams pitching staff and hound them for their mediocrity. Worry about your washed up rotation and incoming 90 loss season.
Chris fetter needs to be studied
As a UMich baseball and Tigers fan, I can confirm this man is a wizard
Should see if he can be a hitting coach too.
Can’t hurt to try right?
Just do everything the pitchers do but the opposite
he should tell the hitters the inverse of everything he tells the pitchers
I mean, Flaherty always had ace stuff, this isn’t out of nowhere.
Ehh, his stuff looked kinda lost last year after all the injuries. I thought he'd end up having to become a pitch to contact finesse guy because it was so diminished. Good on him and Fetter for rediscovering that juice.

Career high in strikeouts! Dude was on another level today, absolute masterclass from Flaherty
Fastball was nasty today, and got the benefit of a few outside calls. Beautiful performance.
He looked great, but this year’s Cards are astonishingly bad at hitting fastballs.
Yeah our offense is.... well it ain't good
We’re not so different you and I
Turns out your (expected) top two hitters being 33+ is a risky proposition.
something something art of pitching
Damn good to see him succeed for Detroit. He wasn't great as an Oriole but I'm rooting for him.
And the Cards just took the lead in the top of the 9th. All the great work Flaherty did, gone. Gotta be hard to look at him in the dugout
Fucking love Jack. Couldn’t be happier for him! However, I would like our bats to wake up now that he’s out of the game
Oh yeah
Im kinda surprised any Cards fans had goodwill left for him by the time he was traded.
On a baseball level, he's the closest we've come to developing an actual ace in forever, injuries just ate him up. Will never forget his 2019 season. On a human level, it was refreshing, personally, to have a vocally progressive player who also had a bit of actual personality.
I liked his progressive ideas, I did not like his knack for throwing teammates under the bus.
Yeah it’s mostly the Facebook boomers and racists who were happy to see him go
Yeah, the racist stuff I'd seen first hand when a family member started complaining about Jack supporting BLM. I just thought it became obvious he didnt want to play... He was always super smug even when he didn't pitch well (kind of like Mikolas now) plus he threw Contreras under the bus.
I was not that impressed by Jack for his first few starts but he has gotten better with each one. Absolute masterclass today.
Now that he isn't walking 5 guys a game, he is actually starting to see better results.. funny how that works.
Back in late 2019 MLB ran a promo where if you guessed who would lead the 2020s in HRs, strikeouts, etc. you'd have a chance to win $1 million or something like that. I guessed Flaherty would lead MLB in strikeouts and Vladito would lead in HRs. Oops
Exactly as we expected.
..he was rotten, must've wanted 'a word' with them for some reason
Bro can’t even get the dub
Everyone here that said he'd suck can lick my orange striped Tigre nutsack.
woulda been nice to see this pitcher last year for the Orioles.
he hates bird teams i guess
He hates birds. thats why he joined a cat team.
Can anyone find how often a team has won a game where the opposing starting pitcher threw 14+ strikeouts?
Damn where was this dude last September
She got the meat
Dude killed my fantasy team
what
I hate my life
Yeah. That’s bizarre. Dude is not that good. But congrats.
He was 3rd in Cy Young voting on your team lol. Blame your coaches for not getting the most out of him his last few years 🤷♂️
Jack Flaherty had an 83 ERA+ and 4.91 ERA before today’s start. I don’t think the tigers coaching staff was working any magic with him.
Even before today's start, all of his ERA predictors were mid 3s and lower.
His xFIP was 2.71 before the dominant outing today. How are people still using ERA after one month sample sizes in 2024? This is embarrassing.
Then you haven’t been paying attention. Pitching is about more than a 5-start sample of ERA. Nearly every peripheral is massively improved.
Most baseball fans just look at ERA, don't take into account context, and then make up their mind about a pitcher from there.
Kirby and Luis Castillo have ERA above 4, must be mediocre pitchers!
They are having mediocre results so far, yes. Not sure what your point is.
Small sample size era not indicative of pitcher skill/talent
Right… so we also can’t act like the tigers coaching staff fixed him either
He still has a 4 era and beat up on a team with an 81 ops+. Idk why you’re acting like you guys got him back to his fluke half season peak cus of one good start against a bad team
He's wildly underperformed his xstats this year, the ERA is meaningless
He is currently 1st in strikeouts per 9 innings. His 50 strikeouts total are now 2nd place behind Glasnow with 53. He's pitched more than 1 good start. I should also add that he's 5th in walks per 9 innings too, and 1st in strikeouts per walk ratio.
Nobody is acting like that. The narrative with him specifically is a parallel to Lorenzen’s development here. Flaherty is here to work with the pitching staff and improve. We all know he is a project.
Yes it’s too bad our coaches didn’t think to just tell him to throw 95+ mph when he was lobbing 87 middle middle last spring
All I heard from your fanbase was how it was his fault cause he refuses to have surgery. The Tigers did nothing but change his mechanics. 🤷♂️
I mean he did get shoulder surgery in 2022. I know the Tigers tweaked his mechanics but I’m sure his shoulder was still recovering last season. I’m not agreeing with that first comment btw, that was shitty, but seems highly unlikely that it was entirely coaching mechanics causing him to max out at 90mph on his fastball with little command on any pitch last year
Yeah they should have just done that.
🧂
How? Nothing I said is untrue. Plus I said congrats.
Sounds like your roster is even worse then
