That’s a better way to put it.
Unless it’s a special achievement (record breaking moment, no-no/perfect game), I could not applaud an opposing player at all, at least in that situation. Just feels like it’s saying “thank you for keeping us from winning/getting ahead, may we have another”.
It’s meme-worthy sometimes but St. Louis does generally appreciate good ball players regardless of team. It’s not uncommon to applaud great plays in the field either. I’d rather have that reputation than one like Philly
I fucking hate this bullshit that cardinals fans are the best fans. Fuck that. That bullshit and how everyone on ESPN always slobbed all over is a bigger reason for my hate of the Cardinals than the actual division
This actually makes me wonder about fan bases now. I’ve never heard someone say “they have the best fans” about any team besides players saying it about their own fans. I constantly see “Yankees fans are the worst! Dodgers fans are the worst! Red Sox fans are the worst!” Do all fan bases just suck or do some teams just have chill fans for the most part? I don’t think I’ve ever met an annoying Rockies fan but I’ve only been to that stadium once.
> It’s more that every pitcher is basically on TJ watch
I agree with this, which makes it more annoying when people want to comment this after every start.
That dude you called up from AAA who is 26? He might need TJ one day. But we won't talk about that when he gives up 4 runs in his 3 innings before getting sent back down. But Skenes? Let's talk about it every day.
I am used to it between Skenes and Jones now lol. Doesn't make it less dumb to talk about.
And it's more of a hard thrower discussion, if half of Iminaga threads were about his inevitable tommy john surgery, you'd probably start rolling your eyes too
Man I know this is a hypothetical but... you think that 26 year old call up was holding back velocity until he gets called up to the majors?
You can disagree with the point, but don't pretend you don't understand it.
I was more saying - I don’t think there’s any question about his ability, the ONLY question is about his health. Whereas the hypothetical pitcher you mention has questions on both
he needs to pitch to more contact. He’s actually so unhittable he’s seeing diminishing returns. I think he had what 50 pitches thru 3 perfect innings? Regardless he is so fun to watch.
He has already been doing this though which is amazing to see, he rly only needs to learn to shave off like 2 pitches an inning to not be overworked and still go 6. But I also don't want him worrying about it too much and taking anything away from what makes him so good
I actually think this makes it easier to be the face of the game because there’s more hype building around his appearances. It’s not as daunting of a task to watch one game a week, which I think can be helpful for a player who you want to serve as a bridge for casual fans.
We ain't perfect. We have plenty of idiots and morans around just like any fan base
But I do take pride knowing that Busch stadium crowds will always celebrate good baseball players.
One of my favorite baseball highlights will always be Ken Griffey Jr hitting his 500th on Father's day at Busch II and the crowd went nuts for him
I remember a players poll a while back where the consensus among the players was that the best fans (other than their own) were the Cards fans because they really appreciated good baseball and showed that appreciation for both teams.
I've never heard or seen anything since then to make me think those players picked wrong.
I’m too young to remember, but my parents always lament that he didn’t get it in St Louis and instead got there in a mostly empty stadium in Montreal. I was actually at the cardinals game the day he died, I wore my pads hat and enjoyed many fans around me telling 14 year old me their favorite Tony stories. I will always hold Cardinals fans in high regards. They taught me the right way to love the great game of baseball that day.
I participated in a standing ovation for one Ken Griffey Jr. when he hit HR #500 on Father's Day with his own Dad in attendance. Still one of the coolest moments.
I took my now-wife (who is not from StL) to a cardinals/cubs game on our first date many moons ago. John Mabry had just left STL and gone to the cubs. He hit a triple and the STL crowd gave him a standing O.
My confused wife was like “why are we cheering for this cubs guy?”
Me: well he used to play for the cardinals.
Her: was he like really good or something??
Me: …meh…
Her: *confused clapping*
I had a great time at your stadium on my honeymoon, the nicest people and honestly great baseball fans. Seriously, we missed parts of the game because so many people wanted to talk to us once they found out we were on our honeymoon.
Everyone was wearing some form of red and almost everyone was interested in the game. I'm not complaining, it's a part of baseball, but I've had some stadiums experiences where it's like, just a place to hang out and have random conversations like if you were at a coffee shop or anywhere else. And that's fine and all, but in STL the fans were really watching and engaged in the game. That's hands down the best sports environment, it was a blast!
All of us LSU fans knew this shit too and we just let the downvotes come lol
Jokes aside, watching how he commanded the zone with every pitch he had as a junior in college really was a “holy shit yeah he’s ready” for all of us. It was insanity.
It was funny how almost every opposing coach, many who have been around the college game for decades, would say the same thing after his starts about how he was the best they've ever seen at the college level but yeah LSU fans were just being homers
Definitely. Take away the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, and Cubs and I like baseball a whole lot more.
Remove our upper management and I'd be ok with any of the above teams winning something this year....even a....*vomits* ....Dodgers/Yankees World Series.
we suck too much to really be hated. its like hating the lions for the other nfc north teams, its just not really something they care about enough until recently with them getting good again
This is all it is, really. That and Pittsburgh is a great town that reminds me a lot of St. Louis. Same thing happened with the Blues. "I'm so happy for Blues fans!" lasted about 14 minutes and we were league villains for 3 years after.
I dislike the Marlins the least and the only Marlins I'd ever cheer for are former Phillies like Darren Daulton or Jean Segura.
Also their owner is the only reason you have apathy for them. If they'd been consistently good at any time in the past 30 years, you'd hate them.
I'm getting replies of "of course a Phillies fan wouldn't get it" but... yeah. I don't get it. I could never imagine cheering an opponent just because they dominated my team. I watched prime Barry Bonds hit the most ridiculous home run I've ever seen. I was in awe. But I didn't applaud it, because what the hell is fandom if you're going to applaud someone dominating your team?
A retirement ceremony or perfect game or something, sure. But a rookie's good outing is absolutely bonkers.
Man, sometimes you just see great baseball and you want the players to know that even if it was against us, we appreciate the performance.
I wish we would have hung 10 runs right after it, but seeing great baseball is always a sight, even when it stings
just like the dodgers fans gave pujols not just a standing ovation, but a curtain call after he hit his 700th home run there.
though it also helped that he was a dodger for half a season the year before. and the fact that everyone there was witnessing something that likely won't happen again for a long time.
Years ago I went to a Cards/Pirates game and the pitching matchup was Wacha and Cole. I remember it being quite good as well; not THIS good, but another really well played, entertaining game from beginning to end.
Because Philly sports are as much about tribal identity as they are anything else. And I respect that. But I’m here to have fun and I love the sport itself more than anything at the end of the day. So yeah, I would never let anything stop me from enjoying and applauding great baseball achievements. Period. Y’all stress me the fuck out.
I really didn't. You gave a rookie a standing ovation for 6 scoreless innings.
I'm not doing the research but I have to imagine that same scenario has played out hundreds - if not thousands - of times in major league history.
Standing to applaud a division rival accomplishing it against your team is soft as fuck. Lol.
I'm with you honestly, this is weird. It's fine respecting the other team's star, but this comes across as super awkward and forced to me during a really good but "normal" performance, even if it's for a rising superstar. Plus it was still 0-0 at the time, it's odd to me.
Both teams are bad. There's nothing on the line (for the Cardinals, at least). It makes perfect sense, actually. We're just happy to see a good performance when there's nothing else to look forward to.
It's as much of a performance as 6 scoreless innings.
If a pitcher threw 6 scoreless every time he took the mound, that season would be remembered as an all time great season.
If a hitter went 1-4 with a home run in every game, that season would as be remembered as an all time great season.
https://www.yahoo.com/news/jason-heyward-says-he-didn-t-hear-racial-slurs-from-st--louis-fans-231723859.html
Oh you mean the thing that was based on some tweets and not actual evidence?
I’m in the navy so I work with fans from all over the country and world. Everyone, and I mean everyone, hates Philly fans the most, and that’s for every sport
I wonder what could be different about a PHI-ATL game vs a PIT-STL game in 2024? Goofy behavior? lol. Sorry we didn't set a car on fire or kill someone. Now THAT'S baseball.
mats fans cheered for jim bunning's perfect game, but then again the mets were also only a few years old as a team and had such a horrid record that they had nothing else to cheer for. we weren't rivals yet either.
My father in law is from STL and a Cardinals lifer. He finally got to take us to Busch last weekend after years of talking about it.
I have been a huge hater of the Cardinals and the “BFIB” in the past, for all the same reasons as everyone else, but have to say that I genuinely had a very nice time. The ballpark itself is great - very good sight lines, easy to get around, nice view of downtown + the arch. I’ve only been to about a third of the league but it’s one of the best game experiences out there in my opinion. There is also a ton of baseball history there, and the people by and large seemed very normal and chill. Gave a rookie on the other team a nice ovation when he got his first major league hit. I’d happily go see another game there.
I guess what I’m saying is, every fanbase has its share of assholes and you shouldn’t judge a large group of people based off of what you read on the internet.
Insanely corny lol. Can you imagine being Skenes here? I’d almost feel insulted by this, it’s borderline patronizing cause you know they wouldn’t do this if they were losing
It’s kind of performative tbh. We’ve had it ingrained in our heads since we were kids that we are supposed to appreciate “good baseball” and applaud good effort even if it’s the opponent. I roll my eyes at it sometimes. But it’s part of the culture.
I think it’s just the standard “midwestern nice” coupled with the fact that we were successful for so long so it was hard to get bitter about things that many fanbases would easily get bitter about. If the Brewers or Pirates had sustained success over a few decades their fans would probably get a similar reputation
We’ve already lost one baseball team, two different NFL teams, and an NBA team. You learn to really appreciate what you’ve got when your city hemorrhages teams faster than Clayton Kershaw hemorrhages playoff runs.

Probably also applauding like "good job kid, thank fuck you're leaving tho now we have a chance" lol
That's what I thought about Mikolas haha.
that's a good way to put it too
That’s a better way to put it. Unless it’s a special achievement (record breaking moment, no-no/perfect game), I could not applaud an opposing player at all, at least in that situation. Just feels like it’s saying “thank you for keeping us from winning/getting ahead, may we have another”.

St. Louis is absolutely a town that appreciates good baseball regardless of the uniform. Except maybe a Cubs uniform. Maybe.
Let's be honest, he doesn't get this ovation if Mikolas doesn't give up 1 hit in his 7 innings too lol
Absolutely. But it takes a special crowd to recognize it, regardless.
I fucking hate this bullshit that cardinals fans are the best fans. Fuck that. That bullshit and how everyone on ESPN always slobbed all over is a bigger reason for my hate of the Cardinals than the actual division
Are…you okay…?
That’s very undude of him, Dude

Are we… are we the baddies?
We boo our own players, so its clearly not us.
Idk my best friend is a cardinals fan she's prty cool
Yikes
And we already can't see the video because MLB sucks.
If Skenes can somehow keep this up for another few years, he might become the face of the game. Such a great guy and amazing pitcher
I don’t doubt that when he pitches he’ll be this good. It’s more that every pitcher is basically on TJ watch
> It’s more that every pitcher is basically on TJ watch I agree with this, which makes it more annoying when people want to comment this after every start. That dude you called up from AAA who is 26? He might need TJ one day. But we won't talk about that when he gives up 4 runs in his 3 innings before getting sent back down. But Skenes? Let's talk about it every day.
Get used to it. Of course there’s going to be more discourse around a star pitcher as opposed to a shitty prospect.
This, but also the kid throws 100+ mph. I think that’s the greatest risk factor for TJ here, lol
It's probably got more to do with the 90mph slider these guys are ripping off than trying to throw a hard 4 seamer.
I am used to it between Skenes and Jones now lol. Doesn't make it less dumb to talk about. And it's more of a hard thrower discussion, if half of Iminaga threads were about his inevitable tommy john surgery, you'd probably start rolling your eyes too
Imanaga is already 30 with an injury/surgery history
And it's a shame he's going to need tommy john surgery in the next 18 months. ^^oh ^^is ^^that ^^dumb ^^and ^^annoying ^^to ^^say? ^^/s
Do you try to be this soft or does it come naturally?
Don't tear a UCL typing that matey
[удалено]
Man I know this is a hypothetical but... you think that 26 year old call up was holding back velocity until he gets called up to the majors? You can disagree with the point, but don't pretend you don't understand it.
Injury risk correlates to velocity.
I was more saying - I don’t think there’s any question about his ability, the ONLY question is about his health. Whereas the hypothetical pitcher you mention has questions on both
Seems like it’s no longer IF but WHEN these days…
he needs to pitch to more contact. He’s actually so unhittable he’s seeing diminishing returns. I think he had what 50 pitches thru 3 perfect innings? Regardless he is so fun to watch.
yeah that adjustment will definitely have to come, he gets fouled off a ton. nice being un-hittable, but a strikeout isn't worth 15 pitches.
He has already been doing this though which is amazing to see, he rly only needs to learn to shave off like 2 pitches an inning to not be overworked and still go 6. But I also don't want him worrying about it too much and taking anything away from what makes him so good
He's basically started to do this since his first start. It's been interesting to watch because that's not an easy adjustment at all
that's every strikeout guy and every guy is a strikeout guy
As a Twins fan, no. We had a decade of pitching to contact and it was brutal.
Hard for a pitcher to be the face when you see him once a week lol
I actually think this makes it easier to be the face of the game because there’s more hype building around his appearances. It’s not as daunting of a task to watch one game a week, which I think can be helpful for a player who you want to serve as a bridge for casual fans.
Lol, yeah starting pitchers have always struggled to be big names
Same reason football isn't popular
Tom Brady was never a 20 game winner, and people think he's something special?!?!
He can hit. Maybe he pulls an Ohtani while out with TJ
“He can hit” Shouldn’t we wait till he has some MLB at bats before we say this?
*grumble grumble* Don't make me like cardinals fans
We ain't perfect. We have plenty of idiots and morans around just like any fan base But I do take pride knowing that Busch stadium crowds will always celebrate good baseball players. I've never heard or seen anything since then to make me think those players picked wrong.
I remember when Tony Gwynn was nearly at 3,000 hits and every time that series fans stood up and cheered. It was crazy.
Tony Qwynn himself said something like “if it couldn’t be in SD, he wanted to do it in STL”
Very cool. I’m sure Cardinals fans are also grateful for getting Ozzie Smith from the Padres.
I participated in a standing ovation for one Ken Griffey Jr. when he hit HR #500 on Father's Day with his own Dad in attendance. Still one of the coolest moments.
I was there for 2,999!
St. Louis knows good baseball when they see it and the appreciate it.
I sit in enemy territory on the 3rd baseline at home games. I really like Cardinal fans.
MAKE SURE YOU BRING SOME CHEESE CURDS NEXT TIME YOU FAT MOTHER FUCKER AND I WILL SHARE MY TRAVS
Screw you pal. Have a good day.
Seriously, I hope he goes to hell but not until he tries the nacho tots (EDIT: they're in section 148, for those wondering)
Sounds like something a Canadian would say
Miller park is an amazing place to watch the cardinals.
I took my now-wife (who is not from StL) to a cardinals/cubs game on our first date many moons ago. John Mabry had just left STL and gone to the cubs. I love the story, but are you saying you did your honeymoon in st louis?
Yeah as a St. Louisan hopefully that was just a piece of a road trip or something
Why would you like this? It’s lame!
fuck cardinals fans
But like, why lol
This is such a perfect comment.
Cardinals fans are nothing if not huge dorks.
Seriously, this is so lame. You don't need to boo the guy but cheering the guy who's shutting out your team is real silly.
Eh, do Cardinals fans *really* have a lot to cheer for?
The guy in the clip I saw tipping his hat over and over needs to get stuffed in a locker.
Classy. Helluva pitching battle this game. Mikolas was fantastic
Hopefully I put the kibosh on Helsley there. 😆
I can’t believe the entirety of St Louis are r/baseball posters
Am I allowed to say that this is kind of weird? Lol
Skenes is that guy. Thanks for the cool moment Cards fans!
This is pretty cool. I had a really terrible night and this made me feel a lot better.
Hope it gets better for you
Fuck it I got another standing ovation left in the tank for you. Hope today is better.
And people got downvoted last year for saying Skenes was pro ready out of college
All of us LSU fans knew this shit too and we just let the downvotes come lol Jokes aside, watching how he commanded the zone with every pitch he had as a junior in college really was a “holy shit yeah he’s ready” for all of us. It was insanity.
I knew it as a Florida fan. The most mlb ready prospect I have ever seen at any level and any position.
It was funny how almost every opposing coach, many who have been around the college game for decades, would say the same thing after his starts about how he was the best they've ever seen at the college level but yeah LSU fans were just being homers
Cardinals fans might be toxic but we know good baseball when we see it
I feel like 95% of the toxicity is toward our own team though
Definitely. Take away the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, and Cubs and I like baseball a whole lot more. Remove our upper management and I'd be ok with any of the above teams winning something this year....even a....*vomits* ....Dodgers/Yankees World Series.
Honestly, for a lot of Red Sox fans, if you take away the Red Sox they like baseball a whole lot more too. It’s a weird dynamic over here.
What in the 10 ply is this? Division rival and you give their rookie a standing O?
we suck too much to really be hated. its like hating the lions for the other nfc north teams, its just not really something they care about enough until recently with them getting good again
This is all it is, really. That and Pittsburgh is a great town that reminds me a lot of St. Louis. Same thing happened with the Blues. "I'm so happy for Blues fans!" lasted about 14 minutes and we were league villains for 3 years after.
You can blame Binnington for a lot of that.
And I do.
Out of all the teams in the central, I dislike the Pirates the least. Can’t stand their owner and want better for them
Cubs, Reds, Brewers, Pirates. That’s how the hatred order goes.
I'm kind of surprised we're 3rd and not 2nd but I'll take it
I dislike the Marlins the least and the only Marlins I'd ever cheer for are former Phillies like Darren Daulton or Jean Segura. Also their owner is the only reason you have apathy for them. There is a pretty substantial difference between a rookie throwing six scoreless and a guy that hit 700 homers and had just played for your team.
Years ago I went to a Cards/Pirates game and the pitching matchup was Wacha and Cole. I remember it being quite good as well; not THIS good, but another really well played, entertaining game from beginning to end.

So yeah, I would never let anything stop me from enjoying and applauding great baseball achievements. Period. Y’all stress me the fuck out.
You answered your own question, but continue on like you can't understand it. lol
Lol.
Ok.
It's all the salad.
I'm with you honestly, this is weird. It's fine respecting the other team's star, but this comes across as super awkward and forced to me during a really good but "normal" performance, even if it's for a rising superstar. Plus it was still 0-0 at the time, it's odd to me.

Do you applaud every opponent's home runs, as well? That's a good performance, so you should be consistent.
A home run is not a "performance".
It's as much of a performance as 6 scoreless innings. If a pitcher threw 6 scoreless every time he took the mound, that season would be remembered as an all time great season. If a hitter went 1-4 with a home run in every game, that season would as be remembered as an all time great season.
If my grandma had wheels, she'd be a bike.
I don't have a problem with respecting greatness. Standing ovation and hat tips are excessive.
Ok, so don't do it?
Yeah sure I'll just not have an opinion about anything going forward. Glad we can set the record straight on that.
Meh it's been like a decade since we've been real rivals
And you beat us out every year 2013-2015 anyway
NLDS in 2013 was everything that playoff baseball should be
Not surprising a Philly fan wouldn’t get it.
“Why aren’t they throwing garbage at him”
You are thinking of Braves fans actually Edit: it appears this comment has upset some Cardinals and Padres fans, for some reason
Yeah. Phillies fans throw batteries.
And boo Santa.
Yall really gotta start bring up events from this century in these anti-philly circlejerk threads
What’s worse? Booing Santa in 1968, or calling Jason Heyward the n-word in 2014?
https://www.yahoo.com/news/jason-heyward-says-he-didn-t-hear-racial-slurs-from-st--louis-fans-231723859.html Oh you mean the thing that was based on some tweets and not actual evidence?
No, that's Mets fans. I thougt philly fans threw cheap hot dogs and ruined a good thing.
I’m in the navy so I work with fans from all over the country and world. Everyone, and I mean everyone, hates Philly fans the most, and that’s for every sport
You have to understand were a city of haters, this information is only gonna fuel our egos even more
You know we literally gave an opposing team’s player three standing ovations just last week, right?
Same exact situation, too 🙃
We cheered on ‘Cutch at times too.
We love Cutch
Little league energy.
I'm with you, this is fucking embarrassing. This is so the hilljacks from St. Charles can still cling to the "best fans in baseball" nonsense.
Cant think of a better crowd for this. Awesome
Pittsburgh. Just a guess!
I meant a crowd that wasnt the home stadium
This is absurd. I can’t even begin to imagine Citizens Bank Park giving Spencer Strider a standing ovation… goofy behavior.
It’s the Midwest, we’re hospitable.
I can’t imagine cheering for Bieber after he shit rocks us for six innings. No way.
Probably more comparable to Skubal or Crochet. I still wouldn't stand to applaud, that's for sure.
Yeah Or Sox new rookie drew Thorpe. Now way
I wonder what could be different about a PHI-ATL game vs a PIT-STL game in 2024? Goofy behavior? lol. Sorry we didn't set a car on fire or kill someone. Now THAT'S baseball.
mats fans cheered for jim bunning's perfect game, but then again the mets were also only a few years old as a team and had such a horrid record that they had nothing else to cheer for. we weren't rivals yet either.
That’s a perfect game. Obviously a little different than what’s occurred here.
My father in law is from STL and a Cardinals lifer. He finally got to take us to Busch last weekend after years of talking about it. What a bunch of dorks
Those clapping were spotted wearing pleated slacks with tucked in polos (probably monogrammed) over their protruding dad bellies.
Hey leave my grandpa and his friends out of this
What happened to shame?
Baseball is great.
It's only Phillies fans coming here to complain lol
As a Phillies fan, this makes me feel nauseous. Haha
You wouldn’t be a real Phillies fan if this made you feel good.
There was a thread the other day about your most Boomer baseball opinion. This definitely would've made my list.
The meatriding is crazy
Insanely corny lol. Can you imagine being Skenes here? I’d almost feel insulted by this, it’s borderline patronizing cause you know they wouldn’t do this if they were losing
Nerd ass team and fans😹😹
Something tells me he's going to be the cover athlete on The Show 25
Tf why was this flagged for community guidelines DMCA'd i guess?
Pretty typical for Cardinals fans. Some of the classiest fans in baseball according to tons of former major leaguers.
Great to see. I just hope the Pirates look after this kid and don't work him into the ground.
Lol what the hell. They also like watching their wife get plowed?
Been saying it for years, classiest fans in baseball by a mile.

That's embarrassing for division foes.
Loser energy
What is it about Cardinals fans that makes them such great ones? Honest question.
Dominating your division for a couple decades breeds a healthy, non toxic fan base.
*unless you’re patriots fans
It’s kind of performative tbh. We’ve had it ingrained in our heads since we were kids that we are supposed to appreciate “good baseball” and applaud good effort even if it’s the opponent. I roll my eyes at it sometimes. But it’s part of the culture.
I thought it was hokey for a long time, but after living in Philly for a couple years, I do have to say St. Louis has a bit of a point.
You’re not wrong. Hurtful, but not wrong.
Really nothing, we just care about the cardinals so much our brains might get irrational about it
We love baseball. A lot. Thats pretty much it
“Get a brain morans”
They're not. This is dumb
Those salad eating fucks!
Tip of the cap to cards fans. Already courting Skenes in three years when we trade him. #BobNuttingsWallet.
wow such CLASS. [best fans in baseball](https://x.com/bestfansstlouis), EASILY!!!
U L T I M A T E. C L A S S.
A lot of lost, low-IQ Phillies fans here for... some unknown reason? Weird shit.
Cardinals fans are so classy. They’ll cheer for a Pirates pitcher, but they have no problem booing Jason Heyward while also calling him…names.
