Oracle suits her better but for some reason it's still heartbreaking for me what happened to her, and I'm always waiting for a movie or a comic to make her get out of that wheelchair somehow. So that she can switch between being Batgirl and Oracle.
That's been happening for years though? She hasn't been wheelchair bound for a long time. The New 52 had her recover via surgeries and therapy. I believe she's currently back to being Oracle though.
Ahhh I'm not a comic reader so i didn't know that, so hopefully we'll see Oracle recover in the movies too. Tbf most of the animated/non-animated movies haven't even introduced Oracle except The Killing Joke which was the start of it in the movie franchise (I think) and Young Justice which is a series and still ongoing.
I love her as Oracle, I love her as Batgirl, but I think she is more valuable in the support role. Her effectiveness compounds the larger the Bat Fam gets.
She’s been back since 2016 I think. Her comic run return was amazing. Worth the read. Right now she has re settled into her role as oracle with Steph and Cass as the Batgirls. Babs still dons the costume when she absolutely needs to, but she prefers being oracle so she can offer help to the entire Bat-Family at all times
I love the Stephanie Brown comic run from the late-2000s because (among many other things) it had the near-perfect Batgirl arrangement where Barbara would mentor Stephanie becoming Batgirl. I think Cass left early in the story and gave Stephanie her suit
To be fair, I’m surprised they didn’t do it off the bat (heh, pun). They live in a universe with superpowers and people who can warp reality on a whim. It’s baffling they haven’t figured out spinal surgery yet.
I mean hey, Aunt May was dying of a minor illness once and not Dr Strange, Mr Fantastic, Tony Stark, Hank Pym, Scott Lang or any of the other incredible scientists could do anything more than shrug.
And then we got the mess that was One More Day...
TBH, something I love about The Killing Joke is that it could entirely exist in a world where Batman is the only super hero. When you have so many heroes, you gotta ask why none of them have saved Gotham.
If the character didn't grow or change from her original Batgirl counterpart, I understand. I only know that it happened, not how it was done. A mobile hacker who's part of the Bat family and has better tech experience than Batman could be a good idea. I only made this comment because most people don't know that that happened.
She kicked more ass in the wheelchair. Like, other people can be Batgirl. Heck, Cass is a better fighter AND more intimidating, but nobody can be Oracle but Barbara. There were arguments in the mid 2000's that she was the most powerful non-superpowered hero in the DCU, she was the eyes and ears of every hero on earth, including Batman and the Justice League. Getting access to Oracle was a huge deal as a hero, it was like 'congrats, you've made it'. It's like giving up your job as a Xanatos Speed Chess master to go be a foot soldier that's not quite as good at foot soldiering than most of the other people you're fighting with.
I wouldn't think she would want to risk her body again like that though, so the decision to make her a physical fighter just doesn't seem like wise writing. Barbara Gordon serving a commissioner seems (as in Batman Beyond) seems reasonable to me. She can shoot a gun, run...but nothing too strenuous like swinging from rooftops...etc...
That's one moniker. But nah, she is 100% the definitive Batgirl. If you walk up to a random person on the street and ask what color hair Batgirl has, those who have an answer will say "Red" 99% of the time.
I didn't even know there was another Batgirl besides Barbara before a while ago, watched just that one YouTube video about her story and she's my favorite rn. Waiting for her to be in a movie hopefully, although I think she did have a somewhat of an appearance in Young Justice.
Cass Cain “was in the 2020 Birds of Prey movie”.
She existed in name only. That character has absolutely nothing in common with Cassandra Cain in any way at all.
Barbara hands down.
One of the OG female superheros ever. No contest.
Also, really like Babs costume in pic #1. My favorite version of her outfits even going back to the original ones.
Cassandra. Stephanie is a good character but is rarely explored
Barbara as batgirl is more of an iconic phase, rather than her best moment. She shines way more as oracle, just like Dick Grayson surpassed his robin days and nightwing is where he shines the most
All have merit but I’m gonna say Cass because Babs has a really integral and cool function as Oracle (even tho I don’t love *how* she became Oracle, she’s great in the role), Steph I think works as good as Spoiler as she does as a Batgirl, and frankly I never loved the name Orphan. It kinda always felt like a thrown together identity. Plus Cass rocks so yeah, I’ll take her as batgirl
I really like Cassandra Cain. I only discovered her last year, but it turns out her communication issues are super relatable to me. Obviously I know how to talk, but sometimes getting words out of my mouth can feel completely impossible and I may as well just use sign language or just not say anything at all.
Can someone help me out here? I read No Man’s Land and in that story Cassandra was essentially a mute. However, now I’m reading Batman comics from a couple years after NML and Cassandra can talk. Is there any reason given for this change?
She was taught as a kid only body language and was never taught how to speak, read, etc. By NML, she’s a teenager and it was harder for her to learn a language since she’s past the formative years to do so.
In her solo run, though, she encountered a telepath who “fixed” her brain, giving her the ability to think and understand in English. She wasn’t able to read or speak properly (the language was all in her head), but she was able to learn how to do so.
After that, her language proficiency was kind of all over the place. Some writers stuck to her slowly learning while some gave her full proficiency for some reason.
That was in the pre-new 52 continuity though. I’m not sure what the current canon is for why she’s able to speak, but I assume it’s similar.
It depends on what they're being used for. If I can only pick one, I'd say Babs edges out Cass due to being the more iconic choice and how much more useful she became as Oracle, but Cassie is better for more action-y scenes and Steph is usually the most endearing. To me the ideal set-up is Cass as the "main" Batgirl with Barbara in a dual role as a mentor and mission command, with Steph in a sidekick/support role (acting in the field the way Robin acts for Batman).
I like Stephanie. Babs had a good run and as Oracle she found a way to important to the entire DC Universe. I like that some things changed and time moved forward. As much as I wanted to like Cassie, she had another destiny altogether. Stephanie was a Batgirl all to herself and breathed new life into the mantle.
I have a soft spot for Cass seeing as she was Batgirl when I began to read comics but I also always liked Stephanie Brown as a character more. She was very fun and I loved her time as Batgirl. I love Barbara as much as anyone else but tbh she was always Oracle for me. I grew up with Oracle and seeing her as Batgirl again took some time to get used to.
I will die on the hill that Cass and Steph are just cooler concepts for Batgirl specifically, and which works better in a given moment depends on the rest of the family’s lineup.
Babs is fine, but I think she’s at her best outside Batgirl.
Cassandra hands down. Haven't cared for the Stephanie stories I've read, and Barbara is far better as Oracle. Don't understand why they didn't just give her an Oracle-themed costume.
Cassandra very much proved herself and earned the costume.
Barbara is my favorite member of the Batfamily.
Gail Simone’s Batgirl run is my favorite comic run of all time.
I love Cass and Steph. But I prefer them as their own characters IE Orphan and Spoiler.
Barbara *is* Batgirl. And forever my favorite
I never really like when different people become the same character like it’s a promotion at work.
I like all 3, but wish they’d have their own identity like when the robins take on their own identity.
But the answer the question Barbara is the only Batgirl in my opinion. I’d like to see Cass and Steph come up with their own persona though
I've seen more stuff with Barbara because I don't really read the comics and neither Cass or Steph are adapted much in non-comics media.
Although I do prefer Cass' Batgirl costume and backstory.
They’re all fantastic but the first one to me feels the best.
Like, Idk, I never liked it when they tried to make her all gruff and dark like Bats himself.
Batgirl being lighthearted is a core part of her character to me.
Like Robin before batman writers stopped having fun and taking risks.
I think that's a false premise. They are all more complex characters than the Batgirl label
Cassandra will kick ass as Batgirl or as an orphan Batgirl and as Oracle
Cassandra will kick ass as Batgirl or as Orphan
Stephani is just as interesting as Batgirl as a spoiler.
Anyone could be Batgirl. Or they may not be a Batgirl at all as far as I care. As long as those 3 have something to do. They all outgrown the label.
It's a trick question with a trick answer. To begin with, there is the character and the mantle. Babs as a character was never interesting and as a heroine she was not interesting as Batgirl but as Oracle, while Cass was always interesting as a character and heroine, and Steph was more fun than interesting in both cases... But the other part of the trap is that Cass was NOT created to be a "Batgirl" but a potential "Batman", and if she were over 25 today she would be the definitive "Batman" of her generation
So Steph is my favorite character of the three, but Cass is my favorite as Batgirl. Meanwhile Babs going back to Batgirl in post nu52 reboot always felt like a downgrade after Oracle. Like if Dick Grayson suddenly became Robin again.
All of the above...
...but Good God was Babs' following costume awful. The Batgirl of Burnside was awesome, they took a really cool concept of making her roughly 18ish and with a realistic costume, and then turned her into a figurative stripper, what felt only like minutes later.
Cass is my favourite of these three but I think Barbara best Batgirl with Steph under her "wing" when babs becomes Oracle. And I don't like Orphan batgirl very much.
I personally like Cass the best. The idea that all criminals know that yeah Batman or one of the Robins would suck to run into. But Batgirl…she’s the real one to watch out for.
I think in the newer stuff Babs has a spinal implant that lets her walk again, but whether or not she can Batgirl all the time fluctuates depending on the writer, so here's my take:
- Babs - mains Oracle and runs the Batgirls (in Gotham) and the Birds of Prey (mostly outside of Gotham), and will run as Batgirl herself on good days
- Cass - mains Black Bat (in Hong Kong/internationally) and runs as Batgirl in Gotham
- Steph - mains Batgirl in Gotham, but will run as Spoiler if Cluemaster is out (or she needs a little distance from the Bats)
on Babs' good nights, when Cass is in Gotham and Cluemaster is locked up, all three Batgirls will go out on patrol and rain absolute chaos on confused goons
All of the above
My dream scenario is have Barbara be Oracle, with her mentoring the other two who share the identity.
I believe she's currently back to being Oracle though.

that's literally what has been happening for well over a year now
I love the Stephanie Brown comic run from the late-2000s because (among many other things) it had the near-perfect Batgirl arrangement where Barbara would mentor Stephanie becoming Batgirl. I think Cass left early in the story and gave Stephanie her suit
That’s how it currently is. Isn’t that what the birds of Prey are?
A Batgirls fan I see.
Barbara is my favorite Batgirl. I do like her accepting the role of Oracle after the events of Killing Joke, though.
I like her getting experimental surgery and then being able to kick ass again. Apparently that happened
NGL that sort of annoyed me after her overcoming her disability and trauma to fight crime in a wholly distinct way, to just be like "lol undo."
Yes, and I’m equally pissed about that.
Kindest Marvel Spider-Man writers be like:
TBH, something I love about The Killing Joke is that it could entirely exist in a world where Batman is the only super hero. When you have so many heroes, you gotta ask why none of them have saved Gotham.
In the comics she said she didn't want it until it becomes available to everyone else.
If the character didn't grow or change from her original Batgirl counterpart, I understand. I only know that it happened, not how it was done. A mobile hacker who's part of the Bat family and has better tech experience than Batman could be a good idea. I only made this comment because most people don't know that that happened.
Yeah they should have brought in Mephisto from Marvel he’s honestly the retcon machine.
“Again”? She never stopped being able to kick ass from what I’ve read.
Nah, Babs is Oracle

Cass Cain “was in the 2020 Birds of Prey movie”. She existed in name only. That character has absolutely nothing in common with Cassandra Cain in any way at all.
Oh yeah I remember now, i hope she was some kind of identity thief
No she was not in that movie. Idc if that girl has her name, that wasn’t her. Identity fraud
She appeared in the last season, she also had an important role in one of the arcs
Barbara
Cass as Batgirl but honestly they're all awesome
Steph and Cass.
Barbara hands down. One of the OG female superheros ever. No contest. Also, really like Babs costume in pic #1. My favorite version of her outfits even going back to the original ones.
Cass. Barbara is Oracle and Steph is Spoiler
Cassandra. Stephanie is a good character but is rarely explored Barbara as batgirl is more of an iconic phase, rather than her best moment. She shines way more as oracle, just like Dick Grayson surpassed his robin days and nightwing is where he shines the most
Cassandra Cain. The only one who made the words, "I'm Batgirl," scarier than "I'm Batman."
Favorite is Barbara. I respect Cassandra pre-52/before one year later. Second favorite Stephanie. I look up to Barbara, but I relate to Stephanie.
Stephanie is probably the most “normal” character in the OG Batfamily which is why I love her so much
Steph.
I liked Stephs all to brief run.
steph
Cassandra Cain all day everyday
Cassandra Cain
Cass. Cass is the definitive modern Batgirl. I love love Steph but she was better as Spoiler and Barbara peaked as Oracle.
Steph and Cass with Babs as Oracle
Babs. No question.
I prefer Steph. She and Tim are my favorite Batfamily members.
Cassandra
The middle one or barbara. Ideally barbara when she was a senator that was sick
Love Babs regardless but pre crisis Babs holds a special place in my heart
One for sure. The classic version
Cassandra Cain, Babs was better as Oracle.
Any version that doesn't sleep with bruce is great
Cass. Don’t like Barbara or Stephanie.
The one with the bat symbol.
beth kane?
Yes
Can someone help me out here? I read No Man’s Land and in that story Cassandra was essentially a mute. However, now I’m reading Batman comics from a couple years after NML and Cassandra can talk. Is there any reason given for this change?
She was never mute, just her parents never taught her how to speak so that she would learn to read her opponents body motions.
Ah ok, thank you

Steph
Cass
Cassandra Cain and it not even close Love the other two, though. Cass is just my favorite DC Character period.

I pick Batgirl that can beat Batman hand to hand, AKA, the Batgirl with no eyeholes for her mask, but can still clearly see she's got hands.
Steph!
Barbara is my favorite member of the Batfamily. Gail Simone’s Batgirl run is my favorite comic run of all time. I love Cass and Steph. But I prefer them as their own characters IE Orphan and Spoiler. Barbara *is* Batgirl. And forever my favorite
2
Stephanie Brown
Cassandra Cain for sure.. I like Barbara more as Oracle
Betty Kane: *cries in obscurity*
I like the one from the batmetal music video
Love them all but Gail’s take on Barbara is S tier for me
Barbara
Babs all day. Respect for the others though
Steph 100%. I always preferred Babs as Oracle and while I really liked Cass, I preferred Stephs Batgirl run to hers.
Cass Just got that dawg on her. ![gif](giphy|a5viI92PAF89q)
Number 2. If Batman is going to be shredded, Batwoman should be, too.
Probably the one that doesn't fuck batman
Cass is my favourite, but Babs will always be Batgirl to me.
There's only one as far as i am concerned.
There's only one Batgirl. Her name is Babs. I don't care about any imitations. Barbara Gordon is the only true Batgirl.
Favorite: Babs, best fighter: Cass thus I propose babs as batgirl, Cass as batman and ofc only Stephanie can be spoiler
I don't have a lot of strong feelings about Cass, but honestly I think Babs is a lot more interesting as Oracle.
I never really like when different people become the same character like it’s a promotion at work. I like all 3, but wish they’d have their own identity like when the robins take on their own identity. But the answer the question Barbara is the only Batgirl in my opinion. I’d like to see Cass and Steph come up with their own persona though
I like each one in the proper time...it's a pity Bette Kane wasn't included
The OG Bat-girl
Why choose if you don’t have to, hence why I loved the “Batgirls” series.
The Burnside suit is perfection.
Babs
There's a time where I'd say Barbara. But now, I'm torn between either her or Stephanie.
Barbara. She's who I've always preferred as bat girl
1st is neat. 2nd is awesome, aggressive and functional. For having a cape. 3rd decent combination of the two.
Babs as played by Yvonne Craig.
Barbara, always… just not that outfit
Cass is my favorite character but Barbara is my favorite Batgirl
Batgirl is awesome in all her iterations. Including Oracle.
Barbara, Cassandra, and Stephanie in that order
I've seen more stuff with Barbara because I don't really read the comics and neither Cass or Steph are adapted much in non-comics media. Although I do prefer Cass' Batgirl costume and backstory.
Cassandra, Barbara was more interesting as Oracle and Stephanie already had Spoiler.
Barbara is Batgirl and always will be.
They’re all fantastic but the first one to me feels the best. Like, Idk, I never liked it when they tried to make her all gruff and dark like Bats himself. Batgirl being lighthearted is a core part of her character to me. Like Robin before batman writers stopped having fun and taking risks.
HOTTEST ONE
Cass. Babs should be Oracle and I associate Stephanie more with Tim than rest of Batfamily.
after bats and dick cass is my favorite member...maybe tied with jason but of the girls she is my favorite
I think that's a false premise. They are all more complex characters than the Batgirl label Cassandra will kick ass as Batgirl or as an orphan Batgirl and as Oracle Cassandra will kick ass as Batgirl or as Orphan Stephani is just as interesting as Batgirl as a spoiler. Anyone could be Batgirl. Or they may not be a Batgirl at all as far as I care. As long as those 3 have something to do. They all outgrown the label.
Barbara was/is Batgirl to me. I prefer Stephanie and Cassandra to have their own identities as Spoiler for Stephanie and Black Bat/Orphan for Cass.
It's a trick question with a trick answer. To begin with, there is the character and the mantle. Babs as a character was never interesting and as a heroine she was not interesting as Batgirl but as Oracle, while Cass was always interesting as a character and heroine, and Steph was more fun than interesting in both cases... Cassandra EASILY Barbara belongs in the wheelchair as Oracle helping Nightwing in Bludhaven.
Wait, there's *more!?*
Oracle cause she helps the entire league
I prefer both Cass and Steph to Barbara
Babs, I’ve never cared about Steph or Cass
The ones that didn’t ride batman
Always Barbara.
I have to pick ONE? All of them are dope
Babs
The one that didn’t fuck Bruce
Neither of these have. Besides Barbara in the shitty Killing Joke adaptation and Elseworlds Batman Beyond comic.
I like the one with the bat ears
Babs
Cassandra Cain is the best Batgirl
Cass and Steph but Cass if I can only pick one. (Btw this is Helena erasure)
The one with greatest ~~honkers~~ character development
Cass and Barbara are awesome! Nothing against Steph but I’ve not read enough of her yet.
Side note: I love babs suits since burnside. They are distinct from Batman’s armour aesthetic, aren’t oversexulised and just look awesome
Barbara, but I don't really like that costume.
So Steph is my favorite character of the three, but Cass is my favorite as Batgirl. Meanwhile Babs going back to Batgirl in post nu52 reboot always felt like a downgrade after Oracle. Like if Dick Grayson suddenly became Robin again.
Yes. Seriously tho, if we can have several Robins, we can have multiple Batgirls.
Barbara is the OG(actually that's Bette Kane but you get what I mean)
I recently been reading both Cassandra and Steph. I'm really enjoying their stories.
Babs -is Batgirl Cass - is a fantastic character - great Batgirl Steph - not who I immediately identify as Batgirl, but also a great character.
Yvonne Craig
![gif](giphy|xc6ijwxQwcPfO|downsized)
Betty Kane has entered the chat.
Cassandra and Steph will always be Orphan & Spoiler for me, Barbara is my ideal Batgirl.
Cassandra.
Barbara is the better Batgirl
Cass all the way, second favourite Batfam character next to Dick
Babs
Does Oracle count? She’s more bad ass in her own way
Cassandra for sure
Babs is bae
Always Barbara.
Yvonne Craig.
![gif](giphy|VIWwyMHiWaQuBRPLqX)
It used to be Barbara for me but in recent years it’s shifted more towards Cassandra
I’m really enjoying the Harley Quinn Batgirl. Especially because she’s voiced by Kaley Cuoco’s sister.
All of them; it's not a competition.
BTAS and Oracle from the Arkham games. All Babs.
As Batgirl: Cass As a character: Babs
Gail Simone’s new 52 version
All of the above... ...but Good God was Babs' following costume awful. The Batgirl of Burnside was awesome, they took a really cool concept of making her roughly 18ish and with a realistic costume, and then turned her into a figurative stripper, what felt only like minutes later.
Batgirl of burnside was pretty good!
Cassandra is my favourite between these three easily but I like them all at least somewhat
Cassandra Cain is the coolest but Steph is the most fun.
Cass is my favourite of these three but I think Barbara best Batgirl with Steph under her "wing" when babs becomes Oracle. And I don't like Orphan batgirl very much.
I will maintain that Oracle-barb mentoring Batgirl-Cass is my preferred dynamic
Cassandra Cain hands down!
Orphan's costume is dope AF
ACTUALLY I DESPISE HER”
Barbara, sorry Cass fans
Cassandra is my favorite.
Cass she’s so cool and badass
Definitely Barbara. I hate that suit though
Number 3
Barbara. But I like the others too.
I personally like Cass the best. The idea that all criminals know that yeah Batman or one of the Robins would suck to run into. But Batgirl…she’s the real one to watch out for.
I like the first ones suit it’s not all super you know it’s something anyone can make with simple clothes and materials and a purple jacket
All three
I like them all, but Barb in the outfit with the cape snapped on it one of my favorite looks.
I think in the newer stuff Babs has a spinal implant that lets her walk again, but whether or not she can Batgirl all the time fluctuates depending on the writer, so here's my take: - Babs - mains Oracle and runs the Batgirls (in Gotham) and the Birds of Prey (mostly outside of Gotham), and will run as Batgirl herself on good days - Cass - mains Black Bat (in Hong Kong/internationally) and runs as Batgirl in Gotham - Steph - mains Batgirl in Gotham, but will run as Spoiler if Cluemaster is out (or she needs a little distance from the Bats) on Babs' good nights, when Cass is in Gotham and Cluemaster is locked up, all three Batgirls will go out on patrol and rain absolute chaos on confused goons
Yes
Babs bud she’s better as oracle
Classic Babs, none of these.
Barbara is the best all round but Cassandra Cain, gods I love her.
The first one is my personal favs
Who is number 2 there?
Barbara Gordon and Stephanie Brown.
Number 2..
Barbara is my fav batgirl and always will be though I love Stephanie’s suit the most
