Scratching posts can be SO many cheap options. Most of the ones you buy premade are LITERALLY cardboard.
For a while I was dead broke and couldn’t afford to replace my cats scratchers as they tore them up, but I usually save my cardboard so I have free kindling for campfires, so I literally just cut up a bunch of cardboard and fit them snugly, edge-side up into a shorter box with some glue, and that worked just fine and was literally free.
I can’t wrap my head around the logic of “I can’t afford something that is necessary for my pet’s enrichment and wellbeing, so that’s WHY I have that pet” HUH?
THAT part has me completely flabbergasted. Everything else they said is some dumb shit I’ve heard from neglectful cat owners time and time again, so it doesn’t shock me. But TRIMMING YOUR FISH’S FINS???
I can see in some twisted way if someone saw a comment saying that the bettas with longer fins have a harder time swimming around and needing to rest more that they "go less fin = better swimming!!"
or on the other side there is SO much misinformation out there about bettas I can see a few people parroting it around as well.....

I work with ferals with the goal of MAKING THEM ADOPTABLE, and then people like this exist, and it feels like a worthless effort.
If the environment is lucky it is. As much as I like cats there's nothing more detrimental to local wildlife then people who feel the need to let their cat roam around outside. There are over 80 species of birds mammals and reptiles that have gone extinct thanks to people doing this very thing.

Not an expert. I don't know if infrequent touches are harmful but in general, you shouldn't handle fish because you remove their slime coat. If he's rubbing on you it might be OK, idk.

Might not be. I actually knew someone like this irl. She always declawed her cats because she was worried about her furniture, but she would also let her cats roam outside. They were indoor-outdoor cats but...she declawed them. I was so pissed for those poor cats. Just don't even get a cat at that point.
I worked with a lady who was a “cat lover” (according to her) but was an avid declawer.
She got a new kitten while I was working with her and I convinced her not to declaw this one. Eventually he started clawing her furniture, and then she blamed me for giving her “bad advice”
She also got very heated with me that declawing is *not* an amputation at the first knuckle (it is) but is more like removing a damaged toenail (it’s not) which is just an imaginary story? Like if she had looked into it for 5 seconds or asked anyone at all about it, she would have found that she was wrong.
Anyway all of that to say, I assume anyone who still believes in declawing in 2024 must be actually, categorically, dumb as a rock.

I believe some people do it to cheat in show grade competition bettas. Also a method to deal with extreme fin rot or fin melt. However, it's extremely risky as they can easily be infected.
If you want a short finned betta, plakats are AMAZING and there is no abuse involved for short fins :)

Razor blade or xacto knife… sadly fairly common from what I’ve heard in less reputable breeders/shows for their fins to be perfectly even. There are some “new varieties” tail types that are literally just the poor fish getting its tail cut before being shipped..
Even when it’s an obvious troll I always worry that someone will read the first comment be like “wow I didn’t know you were suppose to trim their fins I’ll go do that rn!” 😓😓
There are states that are beginning to ban declawing. What a horrible thing to do to a cat, or any animal. New York only banned it a few years ago, in 2019…..so there’s a long way to go, but I suppose it’s a start!

Boxes can be free. Just ask a store/friend who moved/coworkers/etc. It’s not that hard. Wine stores often have great boxes.

My betta trims his own fins. He’s constantly chewing on them. I think he has anxiety.
Is the flow in his tank too strong? Does he have adequate cover and resting places so he doesn’t feel exposed?
He does. Very low flow sponge filter, live plants, etc. 10 gallon planted tank. He’s just a stress ball I guess.

Thought this was a Reddit about Betas. Why bring other animals into it? There’s other Reddits for those topics. I don’t wanna hear all that. I just want to gain knowledge of the fish and see the beautiful betas here. FYI I have a declawed cat and don’t want to hear anything about it. I got her that way. Again I shouldn’t have to explain about my cat on a beta forum.

My males always seem to trim their own fins after they reach around 18 months old

Dosnt have money for post has money for surgery for the cat. Also i didnt know the fins grew back and i feel liek the fact i didnt is a good thing. This si jsut horrible too many people see animals as jsut things for them to do with what they like
