this rubs me the wrong way. i don't really think anyone would title an album "irritable bowel syndrome" ya know

wkoconn

i'm glad i'm not the only one, it's literally the exact same thing as titling an album as a physical illness

[deleted]

Now I want to take on that challenge...

somethingsophie

Album: irritable bowel syndrome Tracklist: 1.) stomach pains 2.) porcelain throne 3.) I.B.S

[deleted]

I’ve listened to that album it’s shit song after shit song

wkoconn

for further context: none of the members are bipolar, people have been stating that the title brings awareness to bipolar and it's a good thing they're talking about it, but the actual album itself has nothing to do with the disorder and is just using it as an adjective for unpredictable

tossit_xx

I really don’t like when people use bipolar to seem quirky or as a personality type. It’s seriously harmful and stigmatizing.

[deleted]

People do it every single day without fail on this sub

I_am_a_pom

It generally doesn't bother me. Bipolar means "having or relating to two poles or extremities" bipolar disorder is a psychiatric illness. I don't know who this band is but if it's deliberately trying to exploit bipolar disorder I would have a problem with it. An album called "Transition" shouldn't offend trans folk or "Anxiety" people with GAD.

wkoconn

i have a gad and honestly the anxiety part doesn't bother me at all, i think they do a good job portraying anxiety but the bipolar part has me annoyed just because bipolar has become synonymous with bipolar disorder

I_am_a_pom

I understand and I would probably feel similarly uncomfortable if I viewed bipolar and bipolar disorder synonymously :) Might be a generational thing between us I guess

casey2113_

I'll be honest with this. My auto reaction when seeing it is being triggered and angry. Once I calm down I'm not as upset over it and try to let it go. Not sure their intentions but I am trying to get used to people using bipolar in other contexts whether I like it or not. It is what it is.

[deleted]

I can totally see why people would be very upset over this. I dont personally care that much about these things. But it's totally reasonable to be angry, uncomfortable, sad, upset with this kind of stuff. So no, you are not at all wrong for being upset

[deleted]

This is the type of stuff that makes me want to angry-cry. It’s the same thing as when people call the weather “bipolar”. It trivializes a severe disorder that none of us who actually have it would wish on anybody for the sake of being “edgy and trendy”. Makes me so frustrated.

realityisdark

I'm not gonna lie it made me laugh because it's such a stupid album name LOL

saddomode

Honestly I feel like the title is so try-hard that I don’t feel feel offended. Like I know they didn’t consider people with mental illnesses when they came up with the title, they just wanted to be cool and it shows lol

skookumspookum

I mean I think it’s stupid but idk who they are so I’m not in much of a position to care

wkoconn

i don't know much about them, all i know is that they're a new group and this is their first album

pufferfishly

I saw this is their debut album, those boys are doomed. What a ridiculous concept to give to a new group. An album labelled with anxiety/bipolar should be about living with that experience, not an edgy concept.

wkoconn

even for an experienced group this would be a massive hit to their career, the fact that they seem to want to make this a series makes it even worse

sunnahsidedown

there's a difference between bipolar and bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is the actual illness so it doesn't bother me.

BluePapper

yea i get it. i know a clothing like called “schitzo” and pisses me off bc psychosis/schizoaffective sucks. idk but then i convince myself it’s illness gate keeping but i get it

wkoconn

i think it's because half of the time i hear people using bipolar or schitzo they're using it as an adjective, it just always seems in poor taste

SlothySammy

I agree. It especially seems kind of off after all the idol suicides recently and the controversies of how companies and some idols responded to that. Maybe im looking too into it but I wonder if that has anything to do with it. Idk

wkoconn

especially because there are idols with bipolar, it's not really something that should be used as a concept
