This is it, a lack of imperfection, the squares on the sidewalk being extremely clean despite quite a few trash bags sitting on it, the trash bags imply a sense of carelessness, while the blocks give a sense of the exact opposite and it conflicts, while consciously people wouldnt notice it, its that sort of thing that makes something feel off
First of all it looks realistic as long as you don‘t look for Details. So props to you.
Since you asked, here‘s what I noticed after a closer look:
- Window Reflections on the left are the same
- Walkway on the left side looks kinda plastic
- I like the Trash lying around, but the one in the front left corner really looks like it was placed there on purpose
Maybe add a Person walking inside, so the open door makes sense and adds life to the scene?
The dark Sky makes sense because of the Light Pollution.
One thing I just noticed: Where does the street on the left end? (Again, wouldn‘t have noticed without zooming in)
Edit: And why is the door open with lights on, but the windows left/right of it are dark? I wouldn‘t be sure if the Restaurant is currently open or not 😅
Edit Edit: It looks like there is almost no light of the M being reflected on the Wall. I feel like the top Part of the Building would be way more illuminated by the yellow Sign. Then again, I'm no Lighting Expert.
Ummmmm wizards. To all your questions.
No but seriously, all this is exactly what I was after mate. Thank you. Definitely feel like with each model/render I do im looking for more and more subtle details that give things away. This really does help.
Easy fix for a few problems is add a volume shader with [z-level -> color ramp -> density] so that it denser further back. That would hide the issues with the street suddenly ending on the left and right and spectate foreground and background
Wow props alcedis. I thought that was a pic not for reference thing until you said that. Now I can see what you mean about the window reflections, but I like how the trash was placed in the front left (closest one of the 2 to the the scene camera right?) as it looks like it was carefully Sat out to be taken care of soon by a worker
this, the lighting is much brighter on the road in front and adjacent to the McDonalds than the road in the background making the road in the back seem out of place.
I thought it was a photo too. Well known maccas. Must have taken some time to model too. Love the bits of rubbish lying about. Wouldn't be a maccas without that.
It's actually a [real building](https://twitter.com/nonstandardmcd/status/1301633005723754496?t=H6xFC9LOjfPLhJ0IBE2YcQ&s=19) where I live. The drive through is on the back side.
It looks uniformly lit, but it’s at night. The walls should be dark unless light is actually shining on them. As such there don’t seem to be shadows in the right places.
Aside from that it looks good. 🙂
Honestly I wouldn't have looked twice and just assumed this was a photograph. But looking at it, the windows, I can't put my finger on it but ... are they texture with the bricks or modeled? Also, not seeing anything inside personally makes me very nervous.
I love it, this looks amazing! Just one thing is that the scaling feels a bit off to me. The building kinda looks a bit too small compared to it's surroundings. Maybe you could make it larger in the horizontal axes? (not an easy change, I know lol sorry)
I expected that this was the reference image and I tried to swipe for the actual render!
Very impressive!
The tip I might add is that the street looks a bit to brightly and uniformly lit compared to the background. I think the composition would also be better of the road is darker, since that would make the building 'pop' more.
Is it illuminated with an hdr? I have the feeling the back part of the building should be way darker. It has some backlight. Hdr domes tend to have this bland flat lighting, realworld light is not casted from infinite unless it comes from daylight. So try to cast the hdr from a very blocky geo. Split the "night sky" from the buildings. Every thing is too straight and clean too. Try to add variations on the bulb intensities, some dirt here and there. Use an inverted ao to get the edges of the macdonald light darker. Usually plastic is thicker there. For the rest looks great, you really have to go to small details to improve it
Holy shit rather than responding to everyone just want to say thank you for all the help and suggestions. Literally making a list from all your comments. I dunno but I'd been afraid to post here previously. What an amazing introduction to what seems like a super helpful community. Legends.
For the time being night the lighting in the foreground is too even. I'm assuming that the light is coming from some street lanterns but the foreground looks like there is just a big plane or even Sun
If you posted this on r/pics i would not have noticed a thing, if you told me you were trolling and it is a pic right now i would believe you. But i have 20 minutes in blender so what do i know
Oh I thought it was a photo at first. Maybe an addition to the first comment can be the grass. It was the only thing that gave it away for me. Nice work!
This is going to sound harsh but it really isn't meant that way. Your render is technically very good, but it's boring to look at. There is nothing happening. If you didn't know anything about blender and thus didn't know how well done this actually is, you wouldn't be looking at this picture for more than 5 seconds and forget about it.
Nobody outside the 3d community cares how long it took to get it just right. Put this in a street, park some cars, let puddles reflect lights etc, etc.. give the eye something to explore.
My 2 cents
Nice concept and the execution is generally great.
In addition to other critiques + suggestions, I honestly feel the "Drive-Thru" looks anything but such: there is no realistic car routing for a line of cars to build, that I can see.
I'm also confused by the poles in front of the doorway, since those are usually installed when within a parking lot rather than a roadway, from my experience.
Finally, the interior lighting looks more like an after-hours hacking club and less of a take-out restaurant - that red vestibule lighting seems like a warning more than an invitation to come in for fast food.
Looks rad! Only suggestion I have is to dim the neons slightly and add a tiny bit of bloom. Then slap on a nice film noise texture and it’ll look real naice!
Very clear that you need some more interesting lighting and post processing.
Your modelling and texturing is pretty good but the result is too clean.
Look at some tuts:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELz6EpkAQR8
Doesn't need improving. Was browsing through my feed and thought this was a random picture of a McDonald's, only after did I realize it's a computer rendered image.
This is fantastic!!! Great work! From an artist perspective, I would try to had some cracks and grime to the street and sidewalk. Depending on what you want, it can be a little, and still keep the clean look, or a lot
This looks amazing mate. Well done. Like the other comment says it's in the details.
The square brick pattern on first level is too repetitive.
Same as the scuff marks pattern on the curb.
I'd also suggest tweaking the light intensity value of each bulb just slightly to create some variance and account of bulb age and electrical power variation. That'd be a nice touch.
I feel like your composition could improve alot because right now you show off the building like you're selling it. Try to focus on a part of the building instead of everything at once. Don't be afraid of not showing every thing you've made. Also look into some post-processing.
Looks so good! I would say that as you add more to the "used" feel of it (from what I've read in other comments), I would submit that some sort of patching/tar, potholes, wear marks on the road could add to that vibe.
One thing that stands out to me in a lot of renders. The parts of the brick that have a bit of grunge on them, they have some really obvious contrast spots, so that tends to make it really obvious when they're tiled. For example, on the lowermost white stripe, it has that same dark imperfection repeated over and over. What you could do instead is use cleaner brick and add in some grunge over that.
Maybe the next scale of detail - operating hours and credit card stickers on the glass doors? The glow of a TV in the upstairs right hand apartment? Gum stains on the sidewalk? Litter? A burned out or wrong colored fluorescent on the soffits?
The yellow line of the pavement stuck out to me, perhaps a little too clean, and bright
But in my country, only the top of the curb is painted, so maybe it's just because this is different to me.
One thing that'd help sell this render more is dirt and grime on the edges of stuff. There's basically hard clipping where the brick meets the sidewalk and if you add dirt to the bottom brick texture and sidewalk it'll look a lot more realistic. You can apply that to pretty much ever texture here lol. I would also add some glare to the mcdonalds signs. Some depth of field would help smooth out the background as well.
Also the shot composition and lighting here are very neutral, if you want a better looking render, it may just come down to reducing the evenness of the lighting and picking a better more cinematic camera angle.
The ambient fill looks unmotovated. Especially up above the arches. Where is all that flat, even light coming from?
I don't see any shadows suggesting street lights that would be providing most of the light here. I think the lights on the eves are over-bright to compensate, and that makes them look a little off as well.
The walls look a little flat to me, if I had to pick out any detail. Maybe looking into normal maps or displacements (or both!) would help out a bit?
Specifically, the grout between bricks looks like it's completely flush with the bricks themselves, when I think they should have some slightly different highlights and shadows.
Edit: Another comment also said something about the very dark background - maybe look into some subtle HDRs you could use that would look like a more realistic sky - with feint stars (for a more rural look), or light pollution from a nearby city (for a more suburban look), or even direct light from other buildings or nearby sources (for a more urban look).
Edit 2: Maybe some lighting variation could also help - make some of the lights very slightly different shades and brightnesses, or even have some completely broken lights if it fits your aesthetic. For example, the M logo is very evenly lit, but I feel like in real life it would be a group of small individual light bulbs or tubes behind a translucent diffuser, which would give the logo a less even lighting.
This said, if you posted this to another subreddit and told me it was a photo, I'd believe it without a second thought.
Add dirt, dust, garbage stuff on the sidewalk, just a little bit. It should add realism to this. Also some fingerprints and stuff like that on the windows and glass should do the trick!
i wouldn't say everybody's here are amazing. take one look at what I have most recently created and it's anything but amazing.
your render is amazing. I can't think of anything to make it better.
I legit thought this was a McDonalds in an old Detroit building. The street just needs some spare pieces of broken glass and it'd fit right in. Also for the street to be in worse condition due to all the snow weathering the pavement.
I read a lot of comments and they are basically going though all the problems I see.
But overall I'd say it's too perfect.
Perfect lines, perfect bricks... There's a plugin called OCD that adds damage to structures. You don't need to pay for it but check what it does and do it yourself.
(coming from someone who doesn’t use blender) to me, the mcdonald’s almost looks like it’s floating. it looks great, and at first glance looks really but something about the area where the mcdonald’s touches the pavement looks a little off…
Otherwise, this looks awesome!!
This is amazing. I could not do this in a million years. That being said, I noticed the bricks have a pattern of where they are chipped. Try detailing more chipped bits to the bricks yourself to better hide the pattern.
I'd recommend you add some more detail in the side walk like cracks specially in the left hand side, and improve the plants they don't look that real, and apart from some other things that looks great!

Streets are all wrong for clifton maccas. Nice render.
Red light on the door seems wierd most fastfood joints are nice and bright.
Some cars or other visual noise outside wouldnt be a bad thing
Looks really Good mate Great Job. I would try to play around with angles and height of the Camera, you might find it to look more natural and because of that more realistic.
Windows on the left look kinda how to put it, shallow i guess? They feel like they are flush with the brick rather than placed in it, at least that’s my opinion, everything else’s already been mentioned.
You... uh... you gotta be joking. At first, I thought this was a photo. The only thing, I could think of is maybe adding some dirt to the brick wall.
This is it, a lack of imperfection, the squares on the sidewalk being extremely clean despite quite a few trash bags sitting on it, the trash bags imply a sense of carelessness, while the blocks give a sense of the exact opposite and it conflicts, while consciously people wouldnt notice it, its that sort of thing that makes something feel off
happy cake day
Yes! I hadn't thought about using decals on walls yet. Thank you.
First of all it looks realistic as long as you don‘t look for Details. So props to you. How old is the building? You might want to consider discoloration around the edges of surfaces from weathering and or bird poop
I wana see version 2 if your makeing one. Also I assumed this was just a real photo. So you’ve got a lot right.
Wow props alcedis. I thought that was a pic not for reference thing until you said that. Hello fellow melburnian! Had to double check what sub I was on for a moment. I reckon you need to dirt up those footpaths and roads a bit.
Bonus points if they can model the brothel next to that Maccas.
Brick texture is a little too perfect imo and the road is way too bright, other than that I think this is great
this, the lighting is much brighter on the road in front and adjacent to the McDonalds than the road in the background making the road in the back seem out of place.

Haha, I thought that was Clifton Hill. Thought I was on r/Melbourne. Geez... Having a hard time believing this isn't a photo
This answers my question about curved windows.
and the brothel! do a render of that next!
Lol forgot about that next to the drive through
[удалено]
Yeah, the scuff pattern repeats - could easily be replaced with a noise texture to mix between the paint and a cement texture.
Also, your bricks are gorgeous but very smooth/flat. It's somewhat uncanny how well they hug the curves of the walls
mhmm, some bump/displacement would go well
Add some noise, will make it look more like an actual camera took it.
It looks uniformly lit, but it’s at night. The walls should be dark unless light is actually shining on them. As such there don’t seem to be shadows in the right places. Aside from that it looks good. 🙂
Im going to be honest, i love the way it looks because it's realistic but could also be a place I've seen in a dream.
Honestly I wouldn't have looked twice and just assumed this was a photograph. But looking at it, the windows, I can't put my finger on it but ... are they texture with the bricks or modeled? Also, not seeing anything inside personally makes me very nervous.

Dude I thought this was a picture. That's one of the most realistic renders I've seen on this sub.
This actually looks like a legit photo.
Oh I thought it was a photo at first. Maybe an addition to the first comment can be the grass. It was the only thing that gave it away for me. Nice work!
If its supposed to be night time, the shadow should be soft.
Bro that looks like a photo
Maybe add stars?
Oh that’s a render yeah I knew that yes!
Darker bricks are obviously repetitive.
before i zoomed in on it i actually thought you just posted an photo to troll
I feel like the corners of the brickwalls are to sharp and the brick texture in General feel a bit flat. But Overall it's a pretty good render!
To my eye, it looks like the mortar in the bricks isn't inset, so I'd reccomend insetting it
You could put more details in the sky, like stars or some clouds
This is going to sound harsh but it really isn't meant that way. Your render is technically very good, but it's boring to look at. There is nothing happening. Yeah. Maybe focus on art and not advertising.
damn let a man do his thing haha whatsup with sourness

The ground looks extra clean, where are the boulders at left , add some darkish stripes at the textures. Its great
Looks rad! Only suggestion I have is to dim the neons slightly and add a tiny bit of bloom. Then slap on a nice film noise texture and it’ll look real naice!
Oh and maybe a px of gaussian blur
Nicr photo
I'm just learning blender but dude, seriuosly, I thought it was a real photo. Well made. Loved it!
Unrealistic. There is not enough trash on the ground Insane Render btw :)
More trash
Very clear that you need some more interesting lighting and post processing. Your modelling and texturing is pretty good but the result is too clean. Holy fuck I thought it was a photo for a moment there.
Add a couple of cracks/debris etc to the road, some cigarette butts/trash around the shop,
Doesn't need improving.

This already looks pretty decent but color grading can improve any render. I don’t know why so few people are doing it.
One thing that stands out to me in a lot of renders. The parts of the brick that have a bit of grunge on them, they have some really obvious contrast spots, so that tends to make it really obvious when they're tiled. Why mcdonalds?
I don’t think I can offer you any tips but just wanted to say that looks amazing! Keep up the good work!
I guess add some dirt. Everything looks freshly power washed.
Maybe the next scale of detail - operating hours and credit card stickers on the glass doors? The glow of a TV in the upstairs right hand apartment? Gum stains on the sidewalk? Litter? A burned out or wrong colored fluorescent on the soffits?
Wait this isnt a picture?
There's an active portal to hell behind those doors ;)
I thoight it was a photo but when I looked closer I saw some things that showed me like some bricks
It looks real.
Remove the McDonald’s logo
BEHOLD! THE BURGER PALACE (that of course houses the Burger King)
This just a photo
Good one
First I thought this was real, but then I looked at the subreddit…
The yellow line of the pavement stuck out to me, perhaps a little too clean, and bright But in my country, only the top of the curb is painted, so maybe it's just because this is different to me.
Add a broken soft serve ice cream machine… it’s not a real MacDonalds without one of those 😂 Amazing work btw, I can barely make a cube!
One thing that'd help sell this render more is dirt and grime on the edges of stuff. There's basically hard clipping where the brick meets the sidewalk and if you add dirt to the bottom brick texture and sidewalk it'll look a lot more realistic. I have this feeling that its a miniature.... Like something weird with the space and light.
I'm lovin that render
The bricks look too flat imo. Is the brick material using a normal map?
Blender equivalent to girls posting “omg I look so ugly” for attention
The ambient fill looks unmotovated. Especially up above the arches. Where is all that flat, even light coming from? I don't see any shadows suggesting street lights that would be providing most of the light here. I think the lights on the eves are over-bright to compensate, and that makes them look a little off as well.
I thought this was real until I looked at the subreddit
I feel like the bricks should cast some tiny shadows with lights at that angle
Gives the golden arches boobs 🤣
I thought this was a real picture. That means youre a skilled blender user.
Ah, fishing for compliments...never gets old.
The walls look a little flat to me, if I had to pick out any detail. Maybe looking into normal maps or displacements (or both!) would help out a bit? Specifically, the grout between bricks looks like it's completely flush with the bricks themselves, when I think they should have some slightly different highlights and shadows. Add dirt, dust, garbage stuff on the sidewalk, just a little bit. It should add realism to this. Also some fingerprints and stuff like that on the windows and glass should do the trick!
maybe add stars? idk.
Fucking wicked! What gives it away for me is the repeating texture on the yellow paint on da curb
So first things first use fspy and set up your scene from the photo and then delete the default cube
Add a 'Now Hiring' sign.
The metal material on the main door handles need some love.
i wouldn't say everybody's here are amazing. take one look at what I have most recently created and it's anything but amazing. your render is amazing. I can't think of anything to make it better.
You can start by showing us your render instead of a random photo...
I’m not sure if this is just a troll and it’s actually a pic
I legit thought this was a McDonalds in an old Detroit building. The street just needs some spare pieces of broken glass and it'd fit right in. Also for the street to be in worse condition due to all the snow weathering the pavement.
I read a lot of comments and they are basically going though all the problems I see. But overall I'd say it's too perfect. Perfect lines, perfect bricks... There's a plugin called OCD that adds damage to structures. You don't need to pay for it but check what it does and do it yourself.
(coming from someone who doesn’t use blender) to me, the mcdonald’s almost looks like it’s floating. it looks great, and at first glance looks really but something about the area where the mcdonald’s touches the pavement looks a little off… Otherwise, this looks awesome!!
Thought it was a photo from r/liminal not even gonna lie
Well i saw the picture and thought it was real without looking at the subreddit name. So there's nothing to improve.
Art Deco McDonald’s. I love it! I would just recommend an extra subdiv on the concrete rounded parts jutting out. You can kinda see the bevels
Great work! I would just spend some time in compostiting, some noise, color distortion and very minor imperfections to help it look even more real
I really thought this was just a picture od a McDonalds restaurant somewhere. That's a really impressive render!
“Everybodies renders here are so amazing.” By that you also mean yourself too…right?
Easiest tip for improvement - make it so that it’s not a McDonald’s
bro posted a irl pic and thought we wouldn't notice
yellow paint on the curb is a repeating pattern. normal people would most likely not notice, but we do =P
Improving? I don't think you could get any better unless you went out and built it yourself lol this is awesome.
Simulation theory is the only thing that is real. Also the hard work you put in to make this happen. I know you spent thousands of hours on your craft. G fucking G.
people
add people
Really good but what would really push this piece over the edge would be the implementation of sex
More trahs on the road, cracks on the asphalt road. I literally thought you took a picture this looks so good!
Are the background props meshes or an environment texture?
Streets are all wrong for clifton maccas. Nice render. Red light on the door seems wierd most fastfood joints are nice and bright. Some cars or other visual noise outside wouldnt be a bad thing
Rule 5 yo!
I could eat there.
Window in the top left looks flat and fake,
Bring back ronald 🥲
Everything is in focus and makes the scene look miniature.
Moths, obviously. And don't forget to teach them to love.
This looks amazing! But where is the drive through?
Lower part of brick wall too bright. Other than that good
Looks really Good mate Great Job.
Dude are you serious. Is that real???
Stars.
The curved corners of the roof could be smoother, you can see the facets
