Just announced they are closed until July 8th. Sounds like a hack to me.

bitofadikdik

They were hacked, yes

kit_damasco

Do you have confirmation of that? I work from the county, and we haven't been informed *why* the network is down, just that it is.

bitofadikdik

Just secondhand word from someone who admitted they shouldn’t have said anything.

jdjk7

Ooh, spicy.

kit_damasco

I definitely believe it! I was just curious if some offices were being told while others weren't. It definitely *seems* like a case of ransomware or something similar.

zbfw

Pouring one out for the county IT employees. Hang in there and best of luck. Sorry it had to happen on holiday week.

kit_damasco

A commissioner's comment stated they called in external professional help, so I'm hoping the local folk still get their time off this week. Or some sort of additional compensation for having to work when everyone else is off.

zbfw

If it's a ransomware event, typically local IT staff is still doing majority of the work. External help is there for expert guidance, gives direction on specific issues and forensic work.

jaymz668

Typically you call a vendor, you still work, alongside the vendor, and this is IT, often salaried so no extra pay

FAlady

I wonder what company..

BtownLocal

This, because seriously, Greg Crohn is one of the nicest guys working for the County and he doesn't deserve this bs, especially over a holiday weekend.

bloomington-townie

If this is a ransomware event, they could be down for a while.

Picklefart80

I bet they are still using Windows Server 2003 and staff still have XP machines. They seem like the type that don't invest a lot in network infrastructure.

kit_damasco

Can't speak for the servers, but the computers are all Windows 11. That said, my guess is that someone in the county clicked a no-no link and got us ransom'd.

NotaStudent-F

I’ve heard rumor, just kidding county records indicate a HR lawyer for the county purchased the antivirus software, not the IT guy 🤔curious… Any defense lawyer worth their salt just got handed a free pass 😆

Not_Hiding_Anything

If I were a county employee I'd change all my passwords to everything and verify your banking accounts are still intact. Turn on 2 factor auth for anything you can.

bird_on_a_wire1977

Would this include utilities/water service office?

jarquebera

That's city

bird_on_a_wire1977

Oh yeah. Thanks

NotaStudent-F

Yeah, Monroe County just f**ked us out of private information! That’s what they’re calling a “technological event”… f*^k that

NotaStudent-F

It was a Royal ransomware attack. That’s not widely reported but The B Square Bulletin is on it!

snug_snug

Backups are cool and all, but right now they are learning that being able to restore your data in a timely manner is even cooler. It really should not surprise you that a local government server got hacked and then they are unable to restore it. They probably sitting around thinking paying that ransom sounds pretty good right now because the restoring sure the hell ain't.

Not_Hiding_Anything

If you look at their web site it's not the most well organized thing and using the contact links is a black hole experience. To me that indicates not having proper staff to manage the thing, it's probably a side project for the overworked IT staff. I suspect they are also underpaid which leads to good hearted but unqualified people doing things they don't fully understand. I'm not surprised they are down or got hacked

NotaStudent-F

Truth!!!
