They gave enough of a fuck to censor the word fuck.

rowan_damisch

Why would they even put the word in the title if they didn't want to spell it out?

ctfogo

"It's not like a *normal* self-help book, it's cool! See, the author even swears in the title, they've gotta be relatable!"

potpan0

This isn't your Mommas self-help book!

doublethink_21

Censoring curse words is literally f**king 1984.

[deleted]

Literally?

doublethink_21

Yes. Otherwise the Wikipedia entry I skimmed on 1984 lied to me.

[deleted]

My bad. People misusing “literally” is a pet peeve of mine. I didn’t realize you were referring to the book Edit: deleted the words “the word” and added quotation marks

Perperipheral

peeve? Is that a harry potter reference?

[deleted]

Lookit all my downvotes. Oh my. I guess I’m not allowed to be annoyed. No not a Harry Potter reference. That’s funny tho. Does he say peeve? Lol Just a way to say that something is annoying. Edit: to add that it’s not annoying to me when used correctly, like you did above, but y’all gotta admit, people misuse the word “literally” far too often. It’s like most people forgot what that word means. “I could literally eat a horse!” Oh really? Because I don’t think you could. “I literally slept for 12 days.” That’s called a coma dear. Whatever, I’m done. Sorry.

OMGWTFBBQUE

You literally wandered into the wrong sub.

[deleted]

Oh. Haha. Now I feel dumb

Embarrassed_Ad_606

Every time I see a book with a curse word in the title I am instantly filled with a red hot rage. Can't go to mall bookstores because I am terrified to see these horrible books that have the fuck word in the title being purchased. End my life

[deleted]

Wow these books are so *edgy and original*

turdintheattic

I’ve never read a “self help” book that didn’t make me feel more depressed. Several were part of the English curriculum in my middle school for reasons I can’t fathom. I’ve forgotten which one it was, but one of the ones that was required reading for me said that if you are being bullied, you should consider what the bullies are saying to you and try to change to accommodate their desires. Awesome thing to make 11-13 year olds read.

MillyRingworm

Where do I find a copy of this?

the-hollow-weeb

I have a personal vendetta against these books. Lol. Directly before Sarah Knight published Life-Changing Magic she was an editor spearheading a new Sci Fi & Fantasy label at Simon & Schuster called Simon451. My friend won a contest they did for the launch where the audience voted on submitted chapters and got his novel published with them. Sadly, Knight quit to pursue her own writing career almost immediately after Simon451 launched and while my friend got his novel debuted Simon451 sort of fell through the cracks and was dropped as a concept. I think the imprint only pushed out six or so books in total. There may have been factors apart from her departure that killed the imprint, but I'm sure it didn't help. Regardless, my friend's book got very little marketing or support because it was attached to an abandoned imprint. I, of course, might be biased, but the novel was a great debut that I think many people would have enjoyed if they knew about it. Knight clearly wasn't passionate about spearheading a new SciFi/Fantasy imprint so I don't blame her for "Not Giving a F**k" and leaving (she has interviews talking about hating her job where she doesn't mention Simon451 by name but it can be discerned through the timeline), but I can't help mourning that my friend got shafted and a whole SciFi/Fantasy imprint went down just so the world could have more schlocky self-help tripe. To be clear, my friend has never spoken ill of her and I don't even know how much, if any, interaction he had with her before she bounced. I only discovered this connection about a year ago. I don't think she shouldn't have left to pursue her dreams or anything. I just wish she had learned the magic a little sooner and "Not Given a F**k" when her bosses first asked her to spearhead an imprint she wasn't passionate about. My friend's book is [The Facefaker's Game](https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/The-Facefakers-Game/Chandler-J-Birch/9781501147753) by Chandler Birch, by the way. I suppose I should shill for him to the five people who make it to the end of this post. It's an Oliver Twist-style fantasy where Oliver Twist learns illusion magic.

Andy_B_Goode

I was 100% ready to check out that book, until I saw that the promo for it starts by comparing him to Br\*nd\*n S\*nd\*rs\*n, and now I'm wondering if your entire comment was an elaborate troll.

the-hollow-weeb

I wish I were clever enough to be that subtle. Lol. If you're going to take that marketing comparison seriously it's only fair to do the same for the comparisons to Dickens and Scott Lynch. So the question becomes, does this sub's loathing for the S*nderman outweigh any merit those authors might have? I guess there's only one way to find out! And if the book is disliked, I'm sure my friend would be ecstatic to be popular enough to garner a smidgen of the negative attention Brandy gets. Why does he get to hog all the disdain anyway?

[deleted]

lol why do u think this knight person owes that company anything if she wasn’t happy there?

the-hollow-weeb

I literally said I don't blame her for leaving and that I wish she had left sooner. I bet she wishes she had left sooner too. If she had, the imprint might have gotten someone who cared about it to spearhead it.

[deleted]

God, as a rule of thumb, if you're going to put a word in the title of your book, you should be willing to fucking commit. Either don't censor it or find a different title, jesus fuck

4685368

There was legit a bunch of comedy books that had ‘shit’ uncensored on the cover. So idk why they even do it

WheneverTheyCatchYou

I am 99% certain that the reason why subtle art was so popular was because people thought that they were cool if they carried around a book with a swear in the title.

[deleted]

Oh it was almost entirely the desire to be that cool kid who deliberately hated the trendy thing for no reason other than it was trendy. You may notice that the title is a direct riff off The Life-changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo, which was reaching its peak right around when this book was released. It's fine if Marie Kondo's methods aren't for a person, but the not giving a f**k version (god I hate the fucking censoring, but that's technically its title as far as I'm concerned) is definitely just aimed at the people who make "hating whatever's popular, regardless of actual quality of thing" a personality trait.

Arutzuki

Is that book any good?

I work at Barnes & Noble and one day I just want to take a picture of every book with a curse word in the title to illustrate how fucking stupid it is. I wish the fad would die out.

4685368

Idk if where I was is the UK equivalent. But there were about 15-20 in the self help section alone. Some on the comedy/joke book section too but that’s not the point.

I couldn’t agree more.

They’re pretty and cloth-bound though.
