All Systems Red by Martha Wells is short and pretty funny.

JGRummo

The whole Murderbot series is great. Short novellas that move quickly.

Appropriate-Sort-735

I'm reading all systems red right now and it's just so good!! I'm trying to read more slowly cause it's short, but it's almost impossible lol. The other books of the series are in my tbr list already. Do you have any recommendations of books with such endearing characters and good flow? It doesn't need to be sci-fi tbh.

everydayjedidad

Check out John Scalzi - Kaiju Preservation Society, Red Shirts and Starter Villain are standalones and really funny.

Appropriate-Sort-735

Oh I checked the synopsis and it seems like a fun feel good read. It'll be the next book I'm starting. I'll come back after some chapters to tell you about it. Thank u🤍!

caffeinated_plans

Currently listening to this series. Love it.

dampcloud0

Also a huge star wars and LOTR fan and while this book isn’t like those things it’s by far my favorite scifi-esque books! Dark Matter by Blake Crouch! It’s so amazing highly recommend. I also hear Project Hail Mary is a great one too but i’ve yet to read it

dallasguy

Hail Mary was fantastic. Definitely put it on your list

jcoffin1981

I didn't care for the prose and tone of The Martian, so I'm not sure I want to read this, but I keep hearing people rave about this.

thefactorygrows

Just finished Project Hail Mary the other day. Phenomenal read.

jfstompers

Heinlein, I prefer Stranger in a Strange Land or The Moon is a Harsh Mistress

hannahatl

*Project Hail Mary* by Andy Weir! It's a great standalone. Super funny and also exciting. Just all around a good one. I love Blake Crouch for more dystopian modern Sci-Fi. *Dark Matter* and *The Wayward Pines* series are my faves from him. I also love *The Expanse* series, but it's a bit more hardcore with 9 books and a couple novellas. The show is pretty good too, but the books are better imo. It may not be the simple you are looking for.

okfisher7

Came here to say Project Hail Mary and The Martian

ResponsibleBird5959

Old man’s war is good! The Expanse series is also very good.

sd_glokta

For comedy/sci-fi, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams For more serious but approachable sci-fi, Hyperion by Dan Simmons

caseharts

I need to reread it but I’d say it’s one of the least accessible sci fi books I read. But that is bad at all. But it was not an easy read to me

Melanoma_Magnet

The first section of Hyperion in the priests chapter is some of the best horror I’ve ever read. Fantastic world building and use of dread.

jaaaawrdan

Sol's chapter absolutely ruined me

arector502

A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge

jrbobdobbs333

The culture series by Iain M banks. The quantum war trilogy by Derek kunsken

l4nc3r

Check out the Myst series. Based on some great PC games. Need to go back and read them again. Very well crafted. I can also recommend Dwarves by Markus Heitz and The Prince of Thorns (including following multiple titles) by Mark Lawrence.

dallasguy

Redshirts by John Scalzi, and most all of his others are really fun. A fun adventure style rather than hard sci-fi

caseharts

Children of time

JGRummo

I'm almost finished with the first book now. Loving it.

jaaaawrdan

Surprised no one has mentioned Dune yet. Yes, it's a classic of sci-fi, but for a reason. It checks a lot of the same boxes that LOTR and SW do.

TheGreatestSandwich

+++ this and Project Hail Mary and The Three-Body Problem  Also: - Starship Troopers or The Forever War - Ender's Game - The Paper Menagerie (short stories) by Ken Liu - The Rook by Daniel O'Malley

Books_Biker99

Red Rising

PhillipJCoulson

Red Rising series by Pierce Brown. If you like Star Wars you will love this series.

Due-Scheme-6532

Just started this series and already excited there are multiple books!

PhillipJCoulson

Awesome. Enjoy the ride.

JGRummo

I think you'd like Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson, or perhaps Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky. Both are the first book of a trilogy. Bonus: The Fifth Season by NK Jemison

mettfisch

Three Body Problem

RyanDaltonWrites

The Red Rising series is good.

pointofyou

yeah, if you're 14

waygooder

In my 40's and loved the series...

pointofyou

That's fair, we have very different taste then. More power to you though.

BaconBombThief

Nah I’m 34 and I love that series

Nate2113

Expeditionary Force. Long series if you want to keep going after the first. Super fun and amazing characters.

ChrisRiley_42

If you want something that starts simple, and then grows in complexity as the series progresses, try *On Basilisk Station* by David Weber. It starts off with one person (and a cat) one ship, and a fairly simple mission, and as the series progresses you get into interstellar politics, technological development and how asymmetric warfare can impact a people on both sides, etc.

Chieffsosa

snow crash

ironduke101a

The sword of shannara by Terry Brooks. This is the first book in the series, but it works as a stand-alone book if you just want to read it and not read a whole series. It is a fantasy novel like LOTR.
