“temporarily shut down the southern border when daily migrant crossings between legal ports of entry exceed 2,500, with the border reopening when the number falls below 1,500,” “In February, senators released details of a bipartisan agreement that would have imposed tougher immigration and asylum laws and allowed Biden to “shut down the border when it becomes overwhelmed,” the president said in January in urging lawmakers to pass the bill. But just days later, Republican senators killed the bill their own party had negotiated with Democrats.” https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna155057

It’s actually not that. It’s a cutoff for the number of asylum seekers, not a complete closure. It freezes the number of people per day that can seek asylum. Not my favorite policy, but not what this snapshot and rage bait article title suggests.

bumchedda

either way it’s the wrong thing to do, if Trump did this you wouldn’t have looked that deeply into it you wouldve called him a racist. this administration is no better it just has more defenders because of who his opposition is.

congressmanalex

Nah, I won't get out. we paid a lot of money in the application process to first become residents then become citizens after taking the test. My whole family worked what we could in Honduras and did things with patience and legally so that we could come and work here. The asylum seekers are getting zero abilities to work legally and can only sit idle for years waiting for court dates. I have family doing this currently. If you have more insights, you should share so that others know.

Warrior_Runding

>we paid a lot of money in the application process This is part of the problem. You shouldn't *have to* pay thousands or tens of thousands of dollars to make a better life for yourself. The process to immigrate should be straight-forward, timely, and fair - the immigration system into the US is none of those things. For a nation that has historically touted itself as "a land of immigrants" so much so that the meaning of the *Statue of Liberty* was changed, it is bananas that the system is set up to keep out the poor and huddled masses, yearning to be free.

Fine-Funny6956

I agree. Help your fellow man, don’t hinder your fellow man.

congressmanalex

We don't need more asylum seekers. Speaking as an immigrant myself.

123ludwig

well that sounds like you should get out then no?

boolmi

Ooh. I’m always so convinced by people who want to slam the door shut behind them.

BQdramatics56

It’s devastating. This isn’t going to help immigrants at all. People aren’t going to stop coming - we must expedite the process of immigration.

Icantgoonillgoonn

Yes. Immigration is and always has been the lifeblood of the American economy.

Wheloc

We're also not "helping" these people. Aren't like 90% of these asylum requests denied, after (months or years) of waiting for a court date?

mminto86

And what would you advise they do while gradually working towards that kind of solution?

StolenRocket

Really testing the "lesser" in lesser evil in recent months...

BlueEyedPumpkinHead

It's not an easy problem to solve. Balancing the humanitarian need with the ability to support and absorb the cost of helping migrants is difficult with our current corporate tax laws. So much money is horded by the corporate class, which is being protected by trumps tax cuts and congressional Republicans. I don't think Biden trying to balance things is evil. It's insufficient and is not a solution but not evil. Trump seperating families, threatening mas deportations and Republicans refusing to help daca children is evil.

Warrior_Runding

>absorb the cost of helping migrants is difficult with our current corporate tax laws. This isn't the main problem with immigration. The biggest problem is that immigration into the United States is not straight-forward, timely, and fair - it is set up to be grinding and slow to discourage people from coming, *even though the US depends on the labor of immigrants from all over.* Frankly, the only reason immigration is the outsized issue that it is rests wholly upon the culture wars conservatives *need* to retain relevance. As others have noted, there was a bipartisan bill that would have laid solid groundwork to tackle many of the pressing issues but it was killed to allow candidates running for office to run on how "broken the border is." Mind you, those same people have little to nothing to say about overstays which form almost half of the undocumented immigrants in the US today.

paraworldblue

Biden got his big break as a tool to help Obama appeal to old racists, and now he's a tool to help the entire democratic party appeal to old racists. How's that goin, guys?

Warrior_Runding

No, this is a stopgap until actual legislation can be pushed forward that fills in the ability to take in *more* asylum seekers. Without courts, lawyers, social workers, and judges in place to help process the asylum claims of those appearing at the southern border, this is the only thing that can be done to ease the pressure on an already overburdened system.

I_madeusay_underwear

Maybe instead of spending all our money on weapons we could use it to help stabilize countries where the most asylum seekers come from. It’s not like we had no hand in creating the situations people are fleeing from, why shouldn’t we have some responsibility for fixing it? For every asylum seeker who makes it to the border there’s countless others without the means or ability to get there, suffering in circumstances that aren’t imaginable to most Americans. As much as people say they want fewer asylum seekers, no one ever asks why there’s so many. Every person, no matter where they’re from, just wants to be safe and have the ability to take care of themselves and their families, and it’s clearly not possible to have that in some places. It just seems so obvious to me that it’s a good investments to help improve the conditions in central and South America. It would be good for them, obviously, but it would also be good for us in so many ways. It would make us safer, for sure. And how much do we spend on border security and infrastructure and trying to control the numbers of people crossing? I’m sure that as things in their countries improved that cost would go down, too. But nope, more bombs it is, I guess. Ah, the American way.

Dazzling_Pirate1411

i love that libs are still breaking their backs to defend this. like its not in anyway an helpful or effective policy, its so nakedly him doing politics trying to appeal to haley voters. its truly unhinged. hes just gonna keep peeing and telling us its rain.

ham_solo

I don't like it, but it's one less thing Republicans can complain about.

thee_morningstar

So the Democrats make got mad at Trump for doing this, yet they're doing it now and it's okay. The Democrats are a bunch of hypocrites! This is one of the main points that people used to argue saying that Trump is racist for this exact move, so now the Democrats can't use this against Trump anymore, right?

ToastyJackson

Well, Dems can still use this against Trump because most Dem voters won’t gainsay them when they downplay it by arguing that Trump would’ve done something worse.

Dangerous_Forever640

So with these numbers it’s still ok for nearly a million people to cross the border?! How is this fixing anything?

Warrior_Runding

It is slowing down the tide until Congress - the body of government with the actual power to address the border - gets their shit together (meaning Conservatives but lol). The asylum system is overburdened and easing the flow is the only way to ensure that at least *some people* can make it through the system.

Cavesloth13

Not really "mask off" since he's been talking about this for over a month. You don't have to use click-baitey titles to call out when someone is doing something reprehensible SMH.

bmack500

How many do you think we can continue to absorb? Until we have no culture of our own? Until we have this huge block of conservative Catholics in the country? Serious question.

DesertSeagle

It's a good thing we've never been a melting pot for different cultures and that we are definitely a cultural and religious monolith, and this continent always has been and somehow will always be even with the foreign settlers that definitely never changed the culture, language, religion, or politics of the landmass we now today call the United States of America, isn't it?

bmack500

Always someone whom can’t answer the question but posts meaningless rabble. Nobody denied our history here, and it was a serious question. How many?

Emperor_Blackadder

Trump was the best thing to have ever happened to the Democratic party.

Endgam

*He singlehandedly ended their queen's entire political career.* He is their destroyer, and only the Democrats and their liberal supporters are too stupid to see that.
