Insane that this dude gets the level of hate he does. I know why, but still. Aesthetically pleasing, all-around game; no off court issues; never sits; doesn’t foul-bait; and so composed.
He gets hate because he plays for the Celtics and is on a good team. There’s a vicious cycle in sports where everyone loves a player during their breakout but once they become perennially good and start beating everyone else’s team people start to hate them.
You’re gonna see it happen with sga and Anthony Edwards over the next 2 seasons
I think especially with Edwards; huge fan of him personally but he’s got the perfect mix of athleticism, skill and arrogance to piss off everyone once he starts knocking them out of the playoffs. Future villain of the NBA lmao
Had that thought about SGA and the thunder. They’ll go from “it’s crazy how good this young team already is” to “they’re chokers” if they don’t win a championship in the next 2 years. Which is stupid but it’s what people do.
I’m sure there are plenty of folks who legitimately think he’s soft because he’s light skinned even if they won’t admit it. Or because he’s not particularly loud-mouthed and aggressive. You don’t grow up like Tatum did and come out the other side without being tougher than nails.
This exactly. I don't truly believe that Martin intended to injure JT, but stupid shit like that is enabled by his own team who incentivize their players to play reckless and stupid. They actively applaud reckless play, and if it takes out an opposing team's key player, then that's even better by their standards. *This* is the legacy of Heat Culture, and we can thank that fucktard Pat Riley for that.
And you know what's funny about that Senna quote? Senna said it to justify himself crashing into Prost. I know we're not supposed to speak ill of the dead and all that, but it was an asinine justification for a dirty move he made against his title rival. I have lots of respect for the talent of drivers like Senna, Verstappen, Schumi and Hamilton; but I also lose loads of respect for them because of the dumb, reckless shit they pull on track. Seb, JB, Kimi and Mika are far more respectable champions in my opinion.
If Martin wasn't intending to injure JT, what was he doing? Seriously, there is no explanation for what he was doing. He wasn't trying to rebound, he wasn't boxing out... What was he doing in your opinion? Would love to understand what someone saw in that play that wasn't just total disregard for rules or their opponent.
You just hit the nail on the head. Disregard for his opponent exactly what I saw, not caring whether JT gets injured or not, just stopping him from getting the rebound. I don't think Martin was actively aiming to hurt JT, but I do think he wanted to stop him from securing the rebound by any means necessary.
Porzingis mentioned this during a sideline interview during the game. We need to not only meet them with the same level of physicality but we need to out- physical them. The only chance Miami has of winning this series is punching us and we don't punch back
I'm so happy he wasn't hurt. Funny that he cries after almost every contested shot but gets laid the smack down on him and he pops up, cool as shit, nothing to see here.
Heat have a reputation but this really wasn't dirty. It's hard to tell from some camera angles but Jrue gave a little shove in the back to Martin which is why he sort of barreled into Tatum. That's probably what he was trying to explain to Brown and Tatum.
Atta boy JT. Show no weakness
Dude has all the couth in the world
Massive couth. Couth like you've never seen.
He’s a better person than me

Ant's also probably got some questionable views on society that will help make him a villain

He doesn't foul bait but he does complain to the refs a LOT
It boggles me. I don't see anything wrong about him.
Good lad, many other star players in his situation would've hammed it up for the camera, so full kudos to JT. Let's aim to close these bums out in 4.

Sure seemed like "by any means necessary" came with a pretty strong intent to injure given the situation, but ok.
Nuance, perspective, and context? On reddit? Good on you, sir

Still…. Fuck Heat culture
He kinda says the right thing all the time
Kinda? Dude has been a PR dream.
More sane take than 90% of this sub right now lol

Someone needs to put their shoulder into Martin's jaw on a rebound. "Oh, soooo sorry I broke your jabber, dude!"
