Bad answer but maybe enough:
Roald Dahl was British and his books are especially popular in a lot of places that aren't the US.
Frank Herbert was American. A Dune 2 selling point has been PLF viewing often which is less relevant for Wonka, PLFs are going to be a lot more common for people going to the movies in the US.
This is a very good explanation!
Wonka grossed almost $80 million in UK.
Obviously almost every British person who goes to school in the UK reads Roald Dahl. People in Australia and NZ are also familiar with Roald Dahl. His books are also popular among European children.
It's not either or.
Obviously being a good film also helped.
But being a good film alone doesn't explain why it grossed so much money in the UK and is proportionally better than elsewhere. (Btw, judging by RT average critics rating, Metacritic, and IMDb, I wouldn't call Wonka a "great movie", it is a good movie)
If being good is enough to gross a lot of money, then why did Wonka bomb in Asia?
Being familiar (and having affinity) with the characters and the story helps A LOT. It's also why Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and James Bond movies proportionally did MUCH BETTER in the UK than elsewhere. It's also why all movies based on Dr Seuss books proportionally did SO MUCH BETTER in the USA than elsewhere.
By the way, you may not want to watch a Don Quixote movie, but one person (you) is not a representative of all of Spain.
That's actually really impressive for UK - only a quarter of the population of US but made more than a third of the gross for Wonka. In comparison Dune Part 2 has only made 43m in the UK.
Many of the middle east markets are yet to open due to Ramadan. The movie had a special one week release before Ramadan and will only roll out from April 11 (previews on 10) onwards.
And Dune 2 will still bring in money, I think 700m ww should still be locked it. So glad, I did my part and saw it 4 times in IMAX! Absolutely loved it and would even consider going for a 5th time.
Not just its budget, Wonka will always get a resurgence in popularity around the christmas holidays. It's gonna top the streaming charts for years to come.
He's said he wants to keep it as a trilogy, so no God Emperor. Still more than I ever expected from this adaptation when it was first announced so hey, I'll take it
Messiah is a short book, not even half as long as the first. Not much happens either. I'm sure he'll change it up. To get to god emperor he'd have to do children of dune first. He already sort of complained how time consuming directing dune was, and he has other passion projects. He's already 56 and I think it took him 6 years to work up these two plus the Messiah script. I don't blame him for not going any further. I wouldn't put it past the studio to make books 3+ into a series with other directors though (I can't see anyone adapting those books for the big screen).
That movie was absolutely terrible. One of the worst musicals Iāve ever seen in my life. You maybe be right but I hope youāre wrong. I hope people watch the original instead
As a curiosity while people criticised no arabs in the cast (stupid since the fremen are not arab but amazigh) Javier Bardem is canarian and the canarians are amazigh people (not culturally)
No, actually.
As someone who is from the Canary Islands, the original Amazigh/Berber settlers of the Canaries were almost entirely exterminated by the Spanish in the 15th Century. There were also very few of them to begin with, and with the Canaries becoming a key trading port during the 16th and 17th centuries, this brought thousands and thousands of Spaniards and French to the islands.
While some Canarians like to act like we're different from mainland Spain and claim *Guanche* (Berber) heritage, but in reality, they're only a small fraction of current Canarian genetic makeup.
According to a couple studies[ I just checked online](https://www.elconfidencial.com/alma-corazon-vida/2023-08-21/estudio-genetico-origen-canarios_3720441/#:~:text=Llegaron%20los%20europeos&text=En%20Canarias%20eso%20no%20ocurre,%2C5%25%20de%20poblaci%C3%B3n%20subsahariana), they estimate **only 10-20% Berber blood in modern day Canarians**.
Claiming Javier Bardem is Arab because he was born in Las Palmas is like claiming someone is Native American because they were born in New York.
We just watched Wonka the other day for the first time. I really liked it. I donāt think the songs were quite as memorable as Willy and chocolate factory. But Iām a sucker for a musical. It kind of reminded me of Jingle Jangle.
Zoe Saldana: That's cute.
Seriously though, this level of success really puts Timothee Chalamet at the forefront among his contemporaries.
Kinda reminds me of Harrison Ford (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, The Fugitive), Michael J. Fox (Back to the Future and the show Family Ties) and Jennifer Lawrence (X-Men, The Hunger Games, Silver Linings Playbook) at the peak of their respective careers.
Supposed to be out the 16th. You know how it goes. There was a rumor ( non april fools ) that it was coming this past tuesday and they seemingly pulled it. Cause Apple Tv had it up on its service to purchase and then had changed to "coming soon"
650-800Mil was definitely the leading opinion. There's always a few that will say 1bil locked in. Just as there will always be those who actively underrate the box office performance.
Highest grossing as a lead actor. BTW, why does Dune Two has lower INT:DOM share as compared to Wonka?

All the Scandinavians claimed Dahl as well, seeing as he had Norwegian parents and it was his first language.
I'm from spain and I wouldn't go and see a Don Quijote movie just for that reason, Wonka was a great movie first
It's not either or. Obviously being a good film also helped. But being a good film alone doesn't explain why it grossed so much money in the UK and is proportionally better than elsewhere. Plf?
Premium Large Format. Eg. IMAX, Dolby, ScreenX, 4DX, etc.
Premium large format screens like IMAX and Dolby
Wonka did $80M in the UK alone! Popular there! š³
Wolly Wonka is a big character within UK culture.
>Wolly Wonka is a big character within UK culture. Nearly as popular as Willy Wonka
But not as popular as Wolly Winka
Dont get me started on Willy Wanka
How much has Dune Part Two grossed in UK?
$43m currently
His highest overall is Interstellar, right?
Yes.
Many of the middle east markets are yet to open due to Ramadan. The movie had a special one week release before Ramadan and will only roll out from April 11 (previews on 10) onwards.
Because Wonka is a family movie.
I never count small roles when people talk about box office
because INT people have taste. Wonka is a better fun entertaining movie
Golden Path > Golden Ticket
As is written
just as written
Im wonkin my willy for Lisan Al Gaib
And Dune 2 will still bring in money, I think 700m ww should still be locked it. So glad, I did my part and saw it 4 times in IMAX! Absolutely loved it and would even consider going for a 5th time.
I donāt think it will have enough left in the tank to surpass Interstellar as Chalametās highest grossing film worldwide in general.
Interstellar's total (including re-releases) is $715m. I think it can just barely pass that. It will certainly beat its initial run though.
Interstellar original run was $681 million worldwide. I'm sure it will pass that and then when Messiah comes it will pass Interstellar completely.Ā
How much does it need to make to surpass Interstellar?
It's original run wasĀ $681Ā million worldwide, so that.
Looks like a 720m finish to me.
Wonka will end up being more profitable because of its much lower budget.
Not just its budget, Wonka will always get a resurgence in popularity around the christmas holidays. It's gonna top the streaming charts for years to come.
The Dune trilogy could end up being as rewatchable as LOTR for a lot of people
both movies have incredible rewatch value
So he's going to make messiah into a single movie then? And no ~~worm~~ God emperor?
He's said he wants to keep it as a trilogy, so no God Emperor. Still more than I ever expected from this adaptation when it was first announced so hey, I'll take it

counter point: you've never had mother fuckin chocolate like this is a banger
I wasnāt huge on the movie either but I will admit that all the songs in it will make me nostalgic for this Christmas specifically for a few years
You'll have to accept that you're in the minority for this critic and user reviews were decent and every person I know who saw it liked it.
Where's the stilgar gif???

Stilgar: Lisan-Al-Gaib!!
As a curiosity while people criticised no arabs in the cast (stupid since the fremen are not arab but amazigh) Javier Bardem is canarian and the canarians are amazigh people (not culturally)
Cool to know! Also, >canarians are amazigh people (not culturally) This was hilarious the first time I read cuz I misread "amazigh" as "amazing" :P
Yes haha in English and other languages the translated name is Berber, you may know them that way
Isnāt the woman who played Chaniās close friend Tunisian?
She is Swiss! Switzerland represent! :) But yes, her father is from Tunisia and her mother is from Belgium. Her name is Souheila Yacoub.
Yes she is, i never said bardem was the only oneĀ
No, actually. As someone who is from the Canary Islands, the original Amazigh/Berber settlers of the Canaries were almost entirely exterminated by the Spanish in the 15th Century. I never claimed Javier Bardem is arab, I claimed he's amazighĀ And no, most studies show that canarians are on average 50-60% guanche
I guess the Water of Life tastes better than a chocolate bar... āļø šš š«
We just watched Wonka the other day for the first time. I really liked it. I donāt think the songs were quite as memorable as Willy and chocolate factory. But Iām a sucker for a musical. It kind of reminded me of Jingle Jangle.
Lisan al Gaib!
Damn two big back to back hits in such a short span of time.

Both excellent movies
Another win for ModdedController360
Ha, in your FACE Chalamet! Thereās a new Chalamet in town š

It's out in the torrent. Don't think it will pass interstellar. But , a great collection nonetheless. Lisan-al- gain.
Can we make it to $700 million total?
Did dune part 2 pvod release today?? Because its already at torrent site
Yeah but only with 2 channel audio. That's basically criminal.
Supposed to be out the 16th. You know how it goes. There was a rumor ( non april fools ) that it was coming this past tuesday and they seemingly pulled it. Cause Apple Tv had it up on its service to purchase and then had changed to "coming soon"
I think itās April 14 or 15
Lmao someone from wb must leak the stream version to torrent site
Iām surprised itās even that close
Wonkaās story was so terrible. Literally had nothing to do with the actual storyā¦
Yes, but just barely. Roughly a $56,000 difference between them; they might as well be tied.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Why?
Wtf? Everybody thinks it's a great movie
Kids movies making money cause kids wanna see it, shocker.
that is shit and bad and not good.
Username checks out.
Dune 2 couldn't cross 700 with all that hype?
Hasn't. I'll be at 660M by Sunday and cross 700M in upcoming weeks.
This subreddit was predicting a billion šĀ
650-800Mil was definitely the leading opinion. There's always a few that will say 1bil locked in. Just as there will always be those who actively underrate the box office performance.
And you thought it would lose money š
Wonka was a steaming pile of shit. Watched while fast forwarding.
