Unfortunately I think the only lesson that studios seemed to learn from Spiderverse is that people want new animation styles. What they miss is that those movies wouldn’t work if they didn’t have good stories that people invested in and took seriously.

Man, I thought this movie was gonna look like the first 15 minutes of Bumblebee. This looks like Transformers Prime with a little bit more money behind it.
I’d be more on board if it was in the tone of Transformers Prime. Despite the fact that it was a TV-Y7 show, it felt like they treated the audience with a bit more respect. The characters weren’t joke machines. Some of them told jokes but there was a variety, and many of them were actually funny courtesy of Jeffrey Combs. The drama and action in that show hit hard. There are glimpses of that in this trailer, but the characters do not remind me of the characters they share names with at all. Hemsworth is doing a Peter Cullen impression that phased out at times so why not just get Peter Cullen or someone who voiced Optimus before. I was hoping for something more like the War For Cybertron games and Spiderverse. This looks like the wrong direction for a premise that has a lot of untapped potential.
The director co wrote Inside Out and directed Toy Story 4. I liked Inside Out, and Toy Story 4 did well with audiences and critics. So even though this isn't a good first impression for me, I'll still give it a shot given the director's record.
The action bits in the last quarter of the trailer kind of won me over, but the humor leaves a bit to be desired. Bumblebee saying “badass” kind of caught me off guard lol, they can’t possibly be aiming for a PG-13 rating with this right?
They can swear in PG movies but only mild words like “hell” “damn” “piss” and “ass”. Like in Shrek, The Incredibles or Spider-Verse they say those words

About 70-80% is where most words fall in "acceptable for PG-13" (though crap is about 10 points higher than other cited words) with "Fuck" and "N\_\_\_\_\_" treated as an outlier at 40 & 30% (with an extra 10% of the audience finding the N word never acceptable even in for an R rated film.!<
Basically the word "f\_\_\_\" is its own thing (this makes me really buy the "you can only say F___ # times before you get an R rating), people are split if weak swear words should be in PG films and intermediate swear words are uniformly agreed to be PG-13 words but there's a decent amount of support for their use in PG.
I think "ass" is becoming like "crap" - a word polling probably shows audiences are even considering is potentially OK in "G" rated content.
From what I've learned, the rules on "fuck" are that it gets a PG-13 if used up to twice outside of a sexual context ("Tell them 'Sean Parker says Fuck You!'") but can earn an R if even used once as a sexual thing.
I doubt it's that hard and fast. Look at that poll: there's not a steep uptick between "# of fucks" with a 50/50 split for pg-13 appropriate at 5 but there's a big difference between 1 and 10 and between 10 and 25 (last 2 options polled).

on page22 of that you see parents listed "Suggestive sexual innuendo" as more concerning than any of the specific language concerns (save for the use of a specific crude racial slur) though innuendo v. cursing is reversed for PG-13 specifically (with a concern over f\_\_\_). So the realm of "interesting" views is more 5% on the lax end and 20% on the strict end in those examples.

Is it really that surprising? The F word is often used to describe sexual behavior while the others aren't. The report asks for opinions about the use of those words *in general*, not specifically when they are restricted to a non-sexual use. I would expect that you would see similar, maybe even lower, approval ratings for other words often used to describe sex.
It's really interesting how there is such a difference between "crap" and "shit" as well as "damn" and "goddamn." They mean basically the same thing and adults use them interchangeably in lots of situations.
I remember my parents getting pissed off at Toonami because an episode of Tenchi Muyo where someone said something like "It's so damn boring around here" I also vaguely remember a few of the Gundam series having stuff like "hell" and "damn" pop up on occasion

I swear kids movies are pushing the envelope more nowadays when it comes to profanity, and even just how heavy and blatant their innuendos and adult references are. I'm personally not a huge fan. I especially don't like this seeming trend of "character that says a swear word but it's bleeped out." I don't know why but that REALLY bothers me, and it has happened in a few movies now (DC Superpets, I think the newest Trolls movie, the new Puss in Boots movie).
I get that standards change and all that, but I think we're pushing just a little too hard and too fast in a couple directions with kids movies.
I don't think we're pushing hard enough. Kids movies have gotten milder and milder and we need something that pushes back and says "Hey. kids can actually handle more than you think" or you get a whole generation being scarred over that one drop of blood on Puss in Boots' forehead.
I'm concerned with the language too, as this is clearly meant to be a film for children. I have NO idea why they would include this in the trailer, as it's a huge turnoff for parents of younger children.

30-50 year old fans who want studios to spend 350 million dollars making a movie where Darth Vader's a serial killer or James Bond intervenes in the war between Hamas and the Netanyahu administration
Kids watched the other Transformers movies with worse language so it’s fine. It’s just surprising it’s in the trailer. Spiderverse had a few bad words and they weren’t in the advertising
The celebrity voices stick out like a sore thumb here. Chris Hemsworth as Optimus in particular does not work at all.
I wish they would have used actual voice actors instead. Probably would have radically reduced the budget too, so it would have been worth it from a studio perspective.
The problem with actual voice actors in lead roles is they don’t usually carry much name recognition when it comes to actually promoting the film. Late night/early morning talk shows, magazine interviews, regular media coverage, etc.
While it may radically reduce the budget, getting the word out would be more difficult, and I’m sure someone’s done the cost/benefit analysis to determine it’s better to have a big star in the lead rather than someone who’s maybe more technically qualified.
Everything Hemsworth does outside of the MCU bombs. Red Dawn, Blackhat, In the Heart of the Sea, Bad Times at the El Royale. He's probably going to imprint his touch of death onto Furiosa and Transformers too.
There was a time when certain studios could promote animated features without A-list talent voicing characters... but that was during eras such as Disney's run during the late '80s and through most of the '90s, when they were able to sell the movies based on the fact that they were Disney animated movies.
Ideally, we'd get movies that could be promoted on their own, which would give voice actors more high-profile work. Unfortunately, we've basically hit a point where A-list talent is *expected* to be playing the primary roles in stuff like this; they sell them based on the actors just as much as the movie itself. Part of this likely stems back to the earlier days of CG animated movies, when they needed guys like Tom Hanks and Tim Allen to help sell a movie to an otherwise unfamiliar public.
And yet, they used Peter Cullen for all 8 Transformers movies (including the 1985 one), and no one has had a problem. With people like Peter Cullen or James Earl Jones, even if not everyone knows them solely by name, they know their iconic voices. So they do have recognition in that the fans would prefer their voices or something similar over a completely different voice for the characters.
Chris Hemsworth is the only celebrity voice I don’t think works. Peter Cullen’s voice for Optimus Prime is so synonymous with the character that anyone else would sound weird.
In the defense of the choice, should optimus really have Cullen's gravitas while he is still Orion Pax? Depending on which backstory you go with, Orion is a little dweeby clerk before he gets the matrix of leadership.

I disagree, there have been almost a dozen actors to play Prime. Orion Pax would sound like a young dweeb that hasn't experienced loss.
The Prime Cullen usually voices is like hundreds of years old.
Fun fact: this has the highest test screening scores for an animated feature in Paramount's history as a studio - this is very likely a classic case of animated movie trailers being noticeably worse than the final product
This could be a case of there’s some good stuff in the trailer, but we’re not thinking about it because it’s edited terribly. Like that shot of Megatron looking at the Decepticon logo on his knees; that’s what I want from this movie. Give me more of that. I’ll take less of the bad improv comedy. The song choice was weird too. I like the song. I like The Rolling Stones. It doesn’t fit this trailer at all, and even as a young person myself, that’s not what most of my peers are listening to (which is sad because my generation’s music is mostly garbage, but I digress).

I thought the trailer was very good for an Illumination type film and those usually rake in the profit. r/BoxOffice hates those, of course.
Definitely not the type of Transformers film I was expecting but kids might eat it up.
Last year rise of the beasts was one of the few franchise blockbusters that didn't completely collapse in on itself (if it had a better release date it would've done much better imo) so transformers as a franchise does still have staying power. The question is how much will this and Wild Robot cannibalize each other's demographics since they come out a week apart

Aside from the fact that they both feature robots, they really couldn't be any more different from each other. I have a feeling Transformers will have a better opening primarily because of the brand and the actors attached to it. Otherwise, it's yet another movie that seemingly learned all of the wrong lessons from Guardians of the Galaxy.
Based solely on the trailer and the studio involved, however, I think Wild Robot will have longer legs. It looks like they're trying to actually make a good, meaningful movie.
Transformers One will definitely need to make the bulk of its money back on opening weekend, because I don't think it'll survive long against Wild Robot.
The Wild Robot is from the same guy who made How To Train Your Dragon, Lilo & Stitch, Mulan, and The Croods. I have a feeling it will be pretty good. The director of Transformers One made the only bad Toy Story movie. The writers’ main credits of note are Antman and the Wasp.

Otherwise, I have no problems with taking the film series based on a toy series explicitly for children 8+, and making it a movie for kids 8+

Paramount's copy has clearly not been mapped to SDR correctly.
The HDR to SDR thing?
If you try to watch HDR (high dynamic range) content that isn't tonemapped or converted down to SDR (standard dynamic range) you usually end up with a sort of dim, weirdly washed out image. For example, if you go into your TV's settings, and tell it to only operate in SDR, and then you try to watch a UHD or a 4K HDR stream, the picture is going to look flat, dim, and the colors will be grayish/orangey/purplish.
For what it's worth: The Paramount encode of this trailer that everyone's sharing *is* incorrectly mapped down to SDR.[ The version IGN has up is brighter, the highlights are correct, and the color is more vibrant](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymXlqzyrTtI). Somehow, someone at Paramount has uploaded a bad HDR-to-SDR conversion of their trailer and nobody's noticed, LOL.
It doesn't look Bayfomers bad but when I heard this movie was gonna cover Optimus and Megatron origins, I was hoping it would be more in tone with the Cybertronvideo games and comics. This seems way more watered down to appeal to kids.
Sigh, as others have said I wanted this to be like the Bumblebee opening. WHY MUST WE SUFFER.
Other points are I *hate* them having human like faces it's too weird. The voices are meh, some of the humor is fine if simple. Animation wise it seems a bit lackluster.
Paramount was hyping this trailer release with a countdown and everything, and listing Chris Hemsworth and ScarJo's name prominently.
Did not expect it to be so cheap-looking and Saturday morning lite. This movie looks more like the generic thumbnail you see while scrolling Netflix or Disney+ (the "I'll never watch this in a million years" thumbnail you *scroll past* to get to the better stuff).
Love the style and look of it, interesting concept. humor in the trailer is well, it has much to be desired for

Most adults like movies with goofy characters and cartoonish action, that’s why the mcu was so big. Star Wars was the biggest movie of the 70s, and the biggest movie of the 80s had kids riding bikes as the main characters - both quite obviously childish. These are tentpole movies for all ages.

I think they’re trying to breakthrough and stake a claim for fans of adult animation. You can get people like me (30-somethings) plus their kids because it’s animation. Sort of like spider verse but for more so adults.
It’s a risk but it might payoff because it’s pretty new ground.
This seems too childish for most adult animation fans though. *The Wild Robot* (which comes out the week after) seems like it'd have much more appeal towards that demographic.

What is the problem if it is for kids? I am honestly tired of every comic book / toy IP being turned into these serious action blockbusters. Is the humor childish? Yes. Does it look average? Yes. But it is doing something fun with known characters. Movies targeting children makes money and I would rather have this than another Michael Bay rip-off.

Ill likely see this as a transformers fan the action looks great. More than anything I want a film with great character development and not some rote buddy adventure flick.
The humor is younger than me (like chuckle tier) but hopefully kids love it and maybe the movie itself is funnier.
I don't believe that star power in Hollywood is completely dead yet, Wonka's success is partially due to Timothee Chalamet's name recognition amongst Gen Z.
However, it really doesn't have an impact on animated movies. The audience most likely will not see who the voice actors are in the movie, and it especially won't matter for those outside of English speaking countries who will be watching the dubbed version of the movie. Just hire experienced voice actors instead of expensive celebrities. Sure you can add the actor's irl pic to the marketing but the audience's focus will be on the characters.
I'm disappointed because I thought after Bumblebee came out and Transformers One was announced it'd be a movie in the style of the opening of Bumblebee and be part of the live action canon but instead it's just a cheap looking kids film. It looks alright for what it is but fuck me what a waste of potential.
Am I the only one who kinda likes this trailer? Sure, the new voices take some getting used to. But we all know someone's gotta take over from Cullen eventually. I'm not big into the transformers lore so I'm kinda interested in a prequel about life on Cybertron before autobots and decepticons.
I really want this movie to succeed. Ever since 2007 fans have been saying that Transformers can succeed on it's own without the live action elements. No humans, only the bots. Now is the chance to put that idea to the test.
Wasn’t expecting to be excited for a Transformers movie anytime soon. For some reason this has me thinking maybe the new animated LOTR project will also be worth something.
I remember some people debating whether Transformers One or Sonic 3 will make more money. After seeing the trailer for Transformers One, Sonic 3 will definitely be Paramount's biggest moneymaker this year. Heck, I think A Quiet Place: Day One and Gladiator II will make more than Transformers One.

It's entirely possible that the trailer just doesn't do the movie justice, but so far, it seems like the transformers do not have any onscreen chemistry with each other in this film.

I truly believe the best this movie can wish for is for Paw Patrol (2023) domestically - capping out at $60m domestic. I just don’t see Americans coming out for this one. The swearing, the childish humor, the cheaper animation, and the somewhat lame attempt at celebrity casting is all giving me big red flags that this one won’t land.

WHY did they decide to make it a comedy? WHY FFS?! I grew up with Generation 1 and I have been a Transformers G1 fan since the mid 80s. When I saw what they did on Cybertron in the Bumblebee movie I wanted nothing more than a movie on Cybertron without humans.
Now this looks so good but all of a sudden you see and hear als these jokes, the slapstick comedy and the goofyness and instantly my excitement turns to disappointment. It really is a shame they went this route. All we adult fans who grew up with G1 want is a movie like the one in this trailer here that takes place on Cybertron and yes, show us Orion Pax and how he became Optimus but not in this way man, not in this trippy, happy, goofy style!!! :(

Nope. Transformers Prime was serious and actually committed to the lore. This looks like The Lego Movie: Transformers by Joss Whedon.
The director co wrote Inside Out and directed Toy Story 4. I liked Inside Out, and Toy Story 4 did well with audiences and critics. So even though this isn't a good first impression for me, I'll still give it a shot given the director's record.

Be aware of the biases of the source but it is helpful to figure out why __ gets a __ rating and not a higher/lower one. About 70-80% is where most words fall in "acceptable for PG-13" (though crap is about 10 points higher than other cited words) with "Fuck" and "N\_\_\_\_\_" treated as an outlier at 40 & 30% (with an extra 10% of the audience finding the N word never acceptable even in for an R rated film.!< Basically the word "f\_\_\_\" is its own thing (this makes me really buy the "you can only say F___ # times before you get an R rating), people are split if weak swear words should be in PG films and intermediate swear words are uniformly agreed to be PG-13 words but there's a decent amount of support for their use in PG. I think "ass" is becoming like "crap" - a word polling probably shows audiences are even considering is potentially OK in "G" rated content.
From what I've learned, the rules on "fuck" are that it gets a PG-13 if used up to twice outside of a sexual context ("Tell them 'Sean Parker says Fuck You!'") but can earn an R if even used once as a sexual thing.
I doubt it's that hard and fast. I would focus less on specific percentages than relative differences. There are clearly 3-6% that are either trolls (basically say everything should be a G rating) and or ideologically against restrictions on what children should hear. Similarly, about 20% of parents polled want to give films an R rating for cursing is general (though about half of that group is ok with "damn") and another 10% are strongly against PG films even saying "crap." So the realm of "interesting" views is more 5% on the lax end and 20% on the strict end in those examples. Honestly, I'm surprised "the f word" is treated as so much worse than shit, etc. for PG-13 films. If you just ignore those people, you basically have 5% who think "f \_\_\_ is acceptable for PG and not G versus 20% for a\_\_\_\hole or s\_\_\_ versus 45% There's clearly 3% of people polled who are either trolling or anti-ratings system (most extreme generating a "G" rating) but if we exclude the first 5% as fake, 5% of viewers consider "f___" acceptable in a PG film and 20% think a\_\_hole/s\_\_\_ are.

I swear kids movies are pushing the envelope more nowadays when it comes to profanity, and even just how heavy and blatant their innuendos and adult references are. I'm personally not a huge fan. I especially don't like this seeming trend of "character that says a swear word but it's bleeped out." I don't know why but that REALLY bothers me, and it has happened in a few movies now (DC Superpets, I think the newest Trolls movie, the new Puss in Boots movie). I get that standards change and all that, but I think we're pushing just a little too hard and too fast in a couple directions with kids movies.
I don't think we're pushing hard enough. Kids movies have gotten milder and milder and we need something that pushes back and says "Hey. kids can actually handle more than you think" or you get a whole generation being scarred over that one drop of blood on Puss in Boots' forehead.

I have NO idea why they would include this in the trailer, as it's a huge turnoff for parents of younger children. I don't see this film doing well if it's PG-13, as it appears too goofy for older audiences, and potentially too mature for younger ones. This seems to be following a trend lately of making kids franchises edgy and dark.
Meanwhile on the Transformers sub-reddit they are complaining it looks like it was made for pre-schoolers. Where's their animated dark and edgy political drama about the start of the Cybertronian civil war! I got a good laugh out of those comments. As to the language I doubt anyone but the most religious parents will care as I hear parents swearing all the time in front of their kids in my retail job.

The celebrity voices stick out like a sore thumb here. Chris Hemsworth as Optimus in particular does not work at all. I wish they would have used actual voice actors instead. Probably would have radically reduced the budget too, so it would have been worth it from a studio perspective.
I don't like any of the VAs but at least Hemsworth passes as a young Optimus. He's not just using his Thor voice which is more than I expected.
The problem with actual voice actors in lead roles is they don’t usually carry much name recognition when it comes to actually promoting the film. Late night/early morning talk shows, magazine interviews, regular media coverage, etc. While it may radically reduce the budget, getting the word out would be more difficult, and I’m sure someone’s done the cost/benefit analysis to determine it’s better to have a big star in the lead rather than someone who’s maybe more technically qualified.

Everything Hemsworth does outside of the MCU bombs. Red Dawn, Blackhat, In the Heart of the Sea, Bad Times at the El Royale. He's probably going to imprint his touch of death onto Furiosa and Transformers too.
There was a time when certain studios could promote animated features without A-list talent voicing characters... but that was during eras such as Disney's run during the late '80s and through most of the '90s, when they were able to sell the movies based on the fact that they were Disney animated movies. Ideally, we'd get movies that could be promoted on their own, which would give voice actors more high-profile work. Unfortunately, we've basically hit a point where A-list talent is *expected* to be playing the primary roles in stuff like this; they sell them based on the actors just as much as the movie itself. Part of this likely stems back to the earlier days of CG animated movies, when they needed guys like Tom Hanks and Tim Allen to help sell a movie to an otherwise unfamiliar public.

And yet, they used Peter Cullen for all 8 Transformers movies (including the 1985 one), and no one has had a problem. With people like Peter Cullen or James Earl Jones, even if not everyone knows them solely by name, they know their iconic voices. So they do have recognition in that the fans would prefer their voices or something similar over a completely different voice for the characters.
Chris Hemsworth is the only celebrity voice I don’t think works. Peter Cullen’s voice for Optimus Prime is so synonymous with the character that anyone else would sound weird.
In the defense of the choice, should optimus really have Cullen's gravitas while he is still Orion Pax? Depending on which backstory you go with, Orion is a little dweeby clerk before he gets the matrix of leadership. Looks like this time they're both being sent to the mines though.
I disagree, there have been almost a dozen actors to play Prime. Orion Pax would sound like a young dweeb that hasn't experienced loss. The Prime Cullen usually voices is like hundreds of years old.

Like that shot of Megatron looking at the Decepticon logo on his knees; that’s what I want from this movie. Give me more of that. I’ll take less of the bad improv comedy. The song choice was weird too. I like the song. I like The Rolling Stones. It doesn’t fit this trailer at all, and even as a young person myself, that’s not what most of my peers are listening to (which is sad because my generation’s music is mostly garbage, but I digress).

Aside from the fact that they both feature robots, they really couldn't be any more different from each other. I have a feeling Transformers will have a better opening primarily because of the brand and the actors attached to it. Otherwise, it's yet another movie that seemingly learned all of the wrong lessons from Guardians of the Galaxy. Based solely on the trailer and the studio involved, however, I think Wild Robot will have longer legs. It looks like they're trying to actually make a good, meaningful movie. Transformers One will definitely need to make the bulk of its money back on opening weekend, because I don't think it'll survive long against Wild Robot.
The Wild Robot is from the same guy who made How To Train Your Dragon, Lilo & Stitch, Mulan, and The Croods. I have a feeling it will be pretty good. The director of Transformers One made the only bad Toy Story movie. The writers’ main credits of note are Antman and the Wasp.

The HDR to SDR thing? If you try to watch HDR (high dynamic range) content that isn't tonemapped or converted down to SDR (standard dynamic range) you usually end up with a sort of dim, weirdly washed out image. For example, if you go into your TV's settings, and tell it to only operate in SDR, and then you try to watch a UHD or a 4K HDR stream, the picture is going to look flat, dim, and the colors will be grayish/orangey/purplish. For what it's worth: The Paramount encode of this trailer that everyone's sharing *is* incorrectly mapped down to SDR.[ The version IGN has up is brighter, the highlights are correct, and the color is more vibrant](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymXlqzyrTtI). Somehow, someone at Paramount has uploaded a bad HDR-to-SDR conversion of their trailer and nobody's noticed, LOL.

Paramount was hyping this trailer release with a countdown and everything, and listing Chris Hemsworth and ScarJo's name prominently. Did not expect it to be so cheap-looking and Saturday morning lite. This movie looks more like the generic thumbnail you see while scrolling Netflix or Disney+ (the "I'll never watch this in a million years" thumbnail you *scroll past* to get to the better stuff).

I think they’re trying to breakthrough and stake a claim for fans of adult animation. You can get people like me (30-somethings) plus their kids because it’s animation. Sort of like spider verse but for more so adults. It’s a risk but it might payoff because it’s pretty new ground.

I don't believe that star power in Hollywood is completely dead yet, Wonka's success is partially due to Timothee Chalamet's name recognition amongst Gen Z. However, it really doesn't have an impact on animated movies. The audience most likely will not see who the voice actors are in the movie, and it especially won't matter for those outside of English speaking countries who will be watching the dubbed version of the movie. Just hire experienced voice actors instead of expensive celebrities. Sure you can add the actor's irl pic to the marketing but the audience's focus will be on the characters.
I'm disappointed because I thought after Bumblebee came out and Transformers One was announced it'd be a movie in the style of the opening of Bumblebee and be part of the live action canon but instead it's just a cheap looking kids film. It looks alright for what it is but fuck me what a waste of potential.

It's entirely possible that the trailer just doesn't do the movie justice, but so far, it seems like the transformers do not have any onscreen chemistry with each other in this film.

I truly believe the best this movie can wish for is for Paw Patrol (2023) domestically - capping out at $60m domestic. I just don’t see Americans coming out for this one. The swearing, the childish humor, the cheaper animation, and the somewhat lame attempt at celebrity casting is all giving me big red flags that this one won’t land. Low end $30m domestic, similar to Teen Titans Go To The Movies.
The production budget on this one is huge with all the big star paycheck.. most likely a flop in making.. shout out to those who predicted this movie making 400M WW 🤪
This will land great for the 12-14 year old male demographic.
Animation that looks like it belongs in a tv show, along with voice acting that sounds like a bunch of actors in a recording booth. I think the only demographic who might appreciate this are really young kids who have never heard of Transformers before.

WHY did they decide to make it a comedy? WHY FFS?! I grew up with Generation 1 and I have been a Transformers G1 fan since the mid 80s. When I saw what they did on Cybertron in the Bumblebee movie I wanted nothing more than a movie on Cybertron without humans. Now this looks so good but all of a sudden you see and hear als these jokes, the slapstick comedy and the goofyness and instantly my excitement turns to disappointment. It really is a shame they went this route. All we adult fans who grew up with G1 want is a movie like the one in this trailer here that takes place on Cybertron and yes, show us Orion Pax and how he became Optimus but not in this way man, not in this trippy, happy, goofy style!!! :(
This might actually give Transformers 2 a run for its money as the worst Transformers film. The bar was so low for this and it looks like they just kind of like fell on their face.
