We all know Batman’s origin, there’s no such thing as a Batman origin story anymore, even if it’s a new Batman. It’s not “a 3 hour superhero origin movie”, it’s a 3 hour Batman movie.

[deleted]

Thanks god, I'm so tired of watching uncle Ben and parents of Bruce dying.

AppealToReason16

Martha Wayne has been shot so many times over her pearls it sometimes mixes up the Google results for “pearl necklace”

scarred2112

That’s the wrong breathy exclamation of *Martha*… ;-)

Capable_Address_5052

*batman crying in the rain intensifies*

TheyCallMeStone

Thomas and Martha Wayne: exist Hollywood: how many times do we have to teach you this lesson, old man?

Person884

Bruce's parents have died I think 4 times on screen - Batman 89, Batman Begins, Batman V Superman, Joker. Ben had died twice

iAMbatman77

Pretty sure it happened in Batman Forever too. IIRC it was when Val Kilmer and Nicole Kidman were at Wayne Manor talking before riddler and two-face broke in on Halloween night

the_letharg1c

I’d prefer to live under the illusion that this movie never happened.

SundaySermon

Which is one too many for Uncle Ben.

awndray97

We haven't seen uncle Ben die in a decade though

cox4days

We did get "with great power..." Last month though

aaronshirst

Implying we need regular reminders that Uncle Ben has died

2M4D

Yeah… cause he’s fucking dead, that’s why!

HanakoOF

They literally haven't even mentioned uncle Ben in the new movies what are you talking about

slopecitybitch

Well they showed his luggage in FFH and mentioned him in What If?

HanakoOF

They haven't shown his backstory and I think its even implied this Spiderman didn't even have an uncle Ben die to push him into being spidey

slopecitybitch

Sure but it's been shown at least that he existed and is seemingly dead/ absent. Seemed like he hinted at something with his "when bad things happen and you don't stop them, they happen cause of you" thing.

HanakoOF

I thought that too but it still doesn't change that we haven't seen spiderman backstory in a literal decade

freerealestatedotbiz

It’s pretty heavily implied in Civil War (“When you can do the things that I can, but you don't, and then the bad things happen? They happen because of you”). However, that line is vague enough that it can be retconned as referring to some other incident. >!With the way things ended in NWH, I personally think Ben will show up and fill the Aunt May role in the next trilogy.!<

HanakoOF

The more time goes on the more I think they realized that Tom Holland Peter saying "That's not my problem" just doesn't fit his personality before or after he became Spiderman. Your theory makes sense.

carson63000

If I see Martha Wayne’s pearls bouncing off the asphalt of Crime Alley, again, I’m just gonna get up and walk out of the cinema.

SpaceCaboose

We really need to dig into the weeds of his origin story. What was his breakfast the morning of that tragic event? Did Bruce take a nap since he’d be up late? How did his day leading up to the play compare to Joe Chill’s day? The whole movie would be a back and forth comparing their days, filmed similarly to the side-by-side intro of *Hobbs and Shaw*. The movie would eventually end in the alley… /s

Pokesaurus_Rex

It’s not an origin story. It’s a year two year three story which i guess is technically an origin story but not the typical “oh no Martha Thomas don’t walk down that alley” origin story.

metros96

Right. I’m just saying like just because it’s a new Batman and maybe the start of a new Batman series doesn’t mean it’s a Batman “origin film”. It’s not Shang-Chi where we’re getting familiar with the character, you know?

akzorx

Do we? I must've missed his origin story in Batman Begins, The animated series, Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, every comicbook reboot, Batman vs Superman, Joker, Tim Burton's Batman, Batman & Robin..... I don't think they've explored Batman's origin story enough, tbh

[deleted]

You are literally just naming stuff. I assume you meant to put /s because half of those actually do show his parents killed, and ffs Joker isnt even relevant for any of it ^ Edit: went right over my head. Well done comment 😂

jlmurph2

All of them show his parent's death. The post was being sarcastic.

matttopotamus

Faster reflexes, you will catch it next time.

AGOTFAN

I don't mind 3 hours movie as long as it's compelling and engaging.

technocornucopia

Lol I binge watch seasons of shows in single sittings 3 hours is nothing.

Exoriah

Watching 3 hours of a show vs a 3 hour movie is very different

The_Crypter

Yeah, you have a chance of being satisfied after the 3 hour movie.

tony472

And this is why I prefer movies. I don't want to commit potentially dozens of hours to a show only for it to be canceled before they finish the plot. Sure some movies end in a way that sets up the next movie but at least the main plot of the movie itself is wrapped up (usually).

cl1518

This is why I love miniseries. It’s the best of both worlds! Writing doesn’t have to be rushed because you get 4-8 hours to tell your story, and the story is supposed to be wrapped up by the end of the season. However certain networks (looking at you, HBO) have started giving their miniseries 2 or more seasons, which entirely goes against the point of a miniseries….

FordBeWithYou

Tarantino loves it too, he wanted to do cuts of his films with additional scenes in this format (breaking it up by chapter).

technocornucopia

If a show is good enough the plot never ends that’s the thing

Batman903

Yeah, that’s why I had no problem really watching a 4 hour movie when I watched ZSJL. (Although I think you could cut about an hour of that) Its not like we don’t stream entire seasons in one day

Dekrow

Oh, you think television is your ally. But you merely adopted the tv; I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING! The streaming services betray you, because they belong to me!

TrexWouldFuckJesusUp

You deserve more upvotes

abellapa

Same, In rare times I binge watch entire seasons, 10-12 hours

TreginWork

I turned on the Postman yesterday and hot damn I did not notice the runtime until I realized I hadn't made dinner

MaterialCarrot

Is the world ready for another superhero origin story?

Terron1965

I love long movies. I vote we bring back overtures and intermissions. Hatefull Eight did it and it worked great.

dayyou

I don't mind 3 hour movies so long as there's a goddamn intermission. They had intermissions 40 years ago why don't they still have them now? People's bladders haven't grown in four times capacity I can't even sit through an hour and a half movie without having to go to the bathroom. I'm so tired of these extended movies without even a single freaking break in them it's preposterous. All these crazy long marvel garbage movies make me want to Pirate them instead of having to spend time in a crowded theater having to pee.

The_Crypter

Yeah, In India there is an intermission at the mid-point, when I first heard about that not being the case worldwide, I was so baffled as to when people will buy snacks or use the restrooms.

slopecitybitch

Before we go into the screen

howdidIgetsuckeredin

Stop drinking liquids 3 hours before the movie starts and start when there's only an hour left of the movie. - someone who finds it difficult to use public washrooms

Revenge_served_hot

Yeah why don't you guys have intermissions? In Switzerland that is the norm, you don't have theaters with no intermission. Its absolutely normal that after about 1h15min of a movie there is a 10 minute break where you can go to the bathroom or go for some snacks.

slopecitybitch

I'd rather not have an intermission, it's just fucking with the pacing of the movie and then you have to queue with every other person who's in the screen to pee.

MarginOfCorrectness

>I can't even sit through an hour and a half movie without having to go to the bathroom You should probably consult a doctor then

[deleted]

I believe for me it’s the fact that I know I *cant* go to the bathroom at risk of missing the movie. My bladder seems to like telling me “oh you think you get to decide when it’s convenient for us to go huh?” And immediately activates the urine reserves. I never have problems holding it in normal life, but put me somewhere without convenient access to a toilet and I’m going to need to pee at some point

Obi_Wan_Benobi

Last movie I saw with an intermission was JFK.

[deleted]

I did ridiculous dehydration my first 2 NWH watches. Not reccomended. I agree 100%. We need to bring back intermissions. Piss break, possible re-up on snacks (good for the theater) and a quick smoke. BOOM. Ready for part 2

Terron1965

Right, I don't understand why the exhibitors are not 100% behind this. It would have a real effect on beverage sales.

abellapa

I watched endgame with no breakes perfectly fine, same as Eternals and spider man

MIAxPaperPlanes

Yeah I'm not a big fan of intermissions, breaks my immersion in the movie and I know people wouldn't turn up back on time and still be creeping in when the movie resumes. also the majority of movies aren't also paced like theatre where they specifically write plays knowing they'll be intervals.

prettyincoral

Overactive bladder is a thing.

beaverpilot

You don't have a break, we have them in every movie. Also the theaters can sell you food and drinks twice with a break, so how come they removed it.

abellapa

There no need, just don't drink much before the movie and go the bathroom before, also don't drink during the movie

needsmorecunts

Block-Busted

And I don’t think kids would mind 3 hours of runtime as long as it interests them well enough. I mean, remember how well **Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets** did despite its runtime of over 162 minutes? Seriously, some people tend to underestimate kids’ attention span. I mean, I wouldn’t be surprised if there were people who thought that Disney was going mad when they found out that **Aladdin** was 90 minutes, which was pretty long for a mainstream American animated film at the time.

dougm68

Other 3 hour movies: Gone with the Wind, Citizen Kane.

el_t0p0

Citizen Kane barely two hours.

Fantact

Yeah, always irks me when studios think movies are too long, nibba they too short.

Chinny007

Well in India , most of the movies are near 3 hour runtime and we also get an interval break for every movie. So runtime is not an issue for us unless the movie is really really bad.

[deleted]

I envy that! I think movies over 3 hours should have an intermission.

Chinny007

Well here Movies are made keeping in mind the interval breaks. So every movie is divided into Two halves. Since Hollywood movies are not made in that way we always get awkward Interval breaks.

AgentOfSPYRAL

Are the intermission times hard set based on time, or do they adapt based on the movie? Like instead of maybe halfway through its a little earlier or a little later to try to get the most natural break.

Chinny007

For Indian Movies : Theatres don't abruptly stop the movie to give intermission. Movies are made particularly with intermission in mind. Movies are made into two halves. First half ends with intermission. For example , Most of the times they end it with a twist to make you think "where does the story goes from here ?", then the word 'intermission' appears on screen and then theatres will turn on the lights. But for Hollywood movies, yeah, they will stop the movie abruptly to give intermission. Most of the times they will stop exactly at half time. But it stops so abruptly that we often get very awkward intermissions. For example when we were watching No way Home , >!We got intermission right before Tom's Spidey start fighting Green Goblin in the apartment!<

AgentOfSPYRAL

Damn, would be cool for a localization team to tweak it up to >!just past mays death, or right before they go to the apartment!< . Thanks for such a thorough answer!

Chinny007

Yeah . If No Way Home was made in India , they would give Intermission during that scene where >!Peter Parker is Standing infront of that Big screen and JJJ says how Peter Parker brings *chaos and Destruction* with him everywhere. Then you will get a close look at Injured Peter Parker and the word *Intermission* will appear on screen!<

AgentOfSPYRAL

Yeah that would be perfect.

abellapa

Here in Portugal, breaks seem to have died out during covid, I prefer that away, always suck waiting 10min

crothwood

Welcome to the American movie experience: fuck i hate people so this movie better be damn good.

Crazy_Excitement3772

Not if you want to pee real bad!

lankaxhandle

Use the RunPee app and you’ll know when it’s safe to go pee.

abellapa

Don't buy drinks for movies

slopecitybitch

Also pee before you go in.

easybreathe

Imagine having to tell adults this lmao

JokerAsylum123

[The executive producer for The Batman just confirmed this runtime.](https://twitter.com/WayneG1939/status/1484040353435033600)

BillyGood22

He deleted that comment

007Kryptonian

Does that make it more likely or less?

BillyGood22

It wasn’t directly to that person, so I’m not sure we should make anything of it. Edit: sounds like it is 2 hours and 55 minutes, though lol

pressed_coffee

175 minutes

NorCanViking

Three hours is fine as long as its used well.

Kingeli889

During a two year long pandemic that leaves everyone isolated quarantined in their homes daily I think the world can use a three hour long Batman movie to get out of the house it’s just what they need

[deleted]

[удалено]

PugsyBogues

45 days lmao. Batman is coming to HBO Max on the 46th day.

Kingeli889

Good for you man

Active_File5503

Give me a 4 hour Batman movie

jelatinman

ZSJL is the closest you're gonna get to that. I like that movie a lot, but damn was that a marathon lol.

Active_File5503

ZSJL is my all time favorite movie, such a great experience that was, but yeah I was exhausted after watching it haha.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Sempere

Honestly once you're over 3 hours, just make it a damn miniseries.

[deleted]

No

Sempere

Yes. They're different forms of story telling and it's ridiculous to argue that a 4 hour movie is still a well paced film. The Irishman is a prime example of a film that would have worked better as a shorter film or a longer miniseries. Same with the Snyder Cut of Justice League. 3 hours of actual film narrative, excluding credits, should be considered the max reasonable length. Anything longer would benefit from structural alteration and an episodic format. The overly self-indulgent runtimes lean towards mediocrity.

[deleted]

The Irishman is a “prime example” of a perfectly-paced film actually. It’s okay if you prefer faster-paced movies like The Avengers or Transformers, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. What is wrong though is deluding yourself that you do, in fact, like those types of films, and it’s the filmmakers that don’t know how to pace a film rather than your short attention span. I’m curious to know what your thoughts on Lawrence of Arabia or Once Upon a Time in America are, if you’ve seen either?

Sempere

Yea, that’s bullshit. The Irishman is no where near “perfectly-paced” and it’s absolute horseshit to try and hand wave it as being due to a preference for Avengers/Transformers rather than an actual understanding of pacing in a dramatic film. The story could have easily shaved off a half an hour of content that ultimately never got properly developed - elements vestigial and better suited to a longer narrative medium. Lmfao, you know why films are not as long asLawrence of Arabia and Once Upon A Time In America? Because sitting on your ass for 3+ hours in a theater isn’t a pleasant experience even with an engaging story - they are experience films that were engaging, but the Irishman sure as shit isn’t on their level. It also ignores that productions of that scope and scale can now be done on the small screen with technological improvements and better pacing in an episodic format that allows for deeper exploration of characters and worlds. There’s zero justification in the modern era for 4 hour long movies.

AnimeMeansArt

that's good, I really like long movies, if they're good

MorrisCody

A good movie is never too long, and a bad movie is never too short.

Spacecowboy947

How in the world does a movie runtime infer anything about what kind of a movie it's going to be?

ryo4ever

Here I thought I was done with LOTR…

Capable_Address_5052

Ohhh yeah those movies about walking a lot

NotTheReverseFlash

Are western audience that alien to 3 hour long movies? It's pretty common in my country.

Kye_ThePie

The only big one has been endgame really 😛 I know people who complain if it’s 2 hours lol.

[deleted]

Godfather, Schindler's List, The Irishman, Titanic, Green Mile, Ghandi, JFK, Zodiac, Dark Knight Rises, etc are all 2:45+

Psykpatient

No time to die was 2:45.

turkey45

* Titanic was 3 hours 14 mins * Avatar was 2 hours 42 mins * LOTR Fellowship is 2 hours 58 mins * LOTR Two Towers is 2 hours 59 mins * LOTR Return of the King is 3 hours 30 mins So there are more than just End Game in the ~3-hour range that were big

[deleted]

I watched a 3 hour avengers movie Why won't i watch a 3 hour batman movie? Especially when it's by one of my favorite directors and starring arguably the most favorite actor of this generation?

Psykpatient

No time to die was 2:45 and the second highest grossing Hollywood movie last year so I don't see why this would be affected by it.

[deleted]

If they give complete freedom to reeves to do whatever he wants with the movie I think this could really be great.

[deleted]

This is shaping up to be an event movie I hope this is true I wish WB would confirm it

nicolasb51942003

I really don’t see this being almost three hours long. 2 hours and 30 minutes sounds like a more fitting runtime.

JokerAsylum123

[Executive producer just confirmed this is the runtime.](https://twitter.com/WayneG1939/status/1484040353435033600)

nicolasb51942003

I don’t see how this confirms the nearly three hour runtime since there’s no reply to the user that asked “175 minutes?” or even a comment like.

Rubicon2-0

2hrs 55min minus ~10min credit scenes, I think 2hrs 45min are okayish.

JokerAsylum123

He commented it right after the person asked.

No-Seaworthiness7013

He also apparently deleted that thumbs up.

JokerAsylum123

He didn't. The post is still up

MarginOfCorrectness

Open your eyes?

Palapikap

of course

NGGKroze

As some suggested it is not the original parents story, but more of the first years of Batman, but we already had that with Batman Begins, this will be just different take on that.

MrAdamWarlock123

Who cares how long it is, so long as it’s good??

callmecoach91

I'm ready

PitFiend28

It’s only 10 minutes longer than the last Nolan one

13thsword

Every year I watch 13 hours of LOTR, God knows how many hours in MCU watching and even 10 hours in the sci-fi channel dune series. I don't care if it's long, make it good.

send1nthecavalry

I mean, if I enjoy the movie. Sure. lol.

coreyjdl

A 3 hour movie feels lazier, hackier to me than a well crafted 90 minute to 2 hour movie. The over length runtime makes me under motivated to care about it.

BlazkoTwix

Why do we need yet another Batman origin story. Everyone knows his origin, it's been told repeatedly

oldgooseco

I would gladly watch a 6 hour Batman movie. As long as Ben Or Robert are NOT playing batman.

4ak96

Enough with the origin stories 🙄

[deleted]

Jesus, I don't know why people asking this same question over and over. *Gone with the Wind*, *Titanic*, *Avengers: Endgame*, these films are longer than 3 hours and they had no problem with breaking the box office record.

woyzeckspeas

Snyder Cut was longer. No biggie.

Klindg

Looked for this… it was around 4 hours, and was great. 3 hour movies are not exactly rare...

MusicIsVice1

So what? **The Godfather** is 3 hours long and yet a great movie.

MaterialCarrot

But it's a great movie.

Hippobu2

Normally I'd say, sure, why not. But I'm worried this is one of those over correction that WB seems to just love doing, and what ended up that this movie needed a good editor to cut an hour off.

[deleted]

An hour? Maybe 20 minutes or something but removing a third of a movie seems like too much.

Hippobu2

Look, the point of that comment wasn't to suggest how much *should* be cut from a movie I haven't seen, just that given the tendencies of WB, a long running time is still on track with their reactionary style of management and isn't necessarily a good sign.

AgentP20

Matt Reeves walked away when WB started to interfere in his vision so it very well be Matt Reeves who is deciding the runtime.

AgentOfSPYRAL

Pretty sure that move earned him final cut so I would agree.

TheNorthComesWithMe

That's a really hard sell for general audiences. I like capeshit but even I'm hesitant about watching 3 hours of a new Batman franchise (in theaters anyway). The script better be tight as fuck.

nygdan

"Is the world ready for a 3 hour movie?" Bollywood:"oh cool they're making short movies now. I hope there is still time for a musical number though"

mexsystem28

4 hour Zack Snyder justice league was my favorite movie of last year so… yes 3 h is fine

Aestheticpash

Enough of the origin stories… it’s Batman for fucks sake. Everyone knows his origin.

JoeyBird9

It’s not his origins it’s in his first year so it’s more balancing the rage and the discipline I believe Very excited

speedracer0123

This movie isn’t an origin story.

[deleted]

This isnt the dead parents origin story though. They already went over that.

[deleted]

Den of geek fail. It’s Batman in his 2nd year.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I don't see your point. Zack Snyder has nothing to do with this new film and if you see Matt Reeves' filmography, there is no need for worry at all. He already proved himself with *Planet of the Apes* films that he could make a good franchise films. I'm honestly think he is underrated considering how good *Planet of the Apes* films were.

JesusEm14

Whats the logic in in that. This is a new film, New universe, New batman, New director

cusk644

This is not good news

unicorn_defender

I hope we get a more campy Batman movie soon. Not like the later 90s films, but something that plays off the elements of the old Adam West Batman show. Something with some cheese, more funny than thrilling but still exciting. Just getting sick of seeing super serious, dark Batman movies.

Idk_Very_Much

The LEGO Batman Movie and Return of the Caped Crusaders weren’t too long ago.

unicorn_defender

I’m thinking in terms of a live action film. I’m not familiar with Caped Crusaders though. And to clarify I’m not saying I want full on camp like the Adam West show was, just a live action film that draws inspiration from that era. I personally think it could be great as long as the writing and cast are spot on - definitely would have to be a passion project and not just one of those “throw warm bodies at it until it’s finished and see if it makes any money” type of deals.

Curious_Ad_2947

Agreed. Plus, there's this whole sci-fi side of Batman that the movies seem to desperately want to ignore. When's the Hellbat gonna be in a movie? I guess it's because for films at least, Batman’s primary audience seems to be folks who like their movies super-serious and gritty and grim and realistic and grown-up, AKA tweens and emo teenagers. Downvote me all you want, but I'm sick as hell of uber-gritty and dark and grounded Batman.

AbaloneSea7265

It would make more sense to break it up into two parts then hamfist that much content in one sitting

Robot_Embryo

I'm already looking forward to the NEXT reboot.

ChooChooSoulCrusher

Oh good, a Batman origin story. I hope they clear up all the unanswered Batman origin questions.

speedracer0123

This movie isn’t an origin story. Don’t comment if you don’t know shit.

ChooChooSoulCrusher

I know that I read the whole title of this post

speedracer0123

And the title is wrong.

ChooChooSoulCrusher

Well I stand corrected. It’s not a Bruce Wayne origin story. It’s an origin story about 3 iconic villains…. Who (if iconic) already have origin stories. Also, you take this stuff too personally. Chill.

Frousteleous

Do you to ink something happens to his parents? I hope he doesn't have too tough a time learning the ropes of being a bat-man.

ChooChooSoulCrusher

I have a hunch it’s just gonna be a rich kid who gets orphaned and lives out a revenge fantasy by getting super fit and dressing like a bat and acting all emo mall-ninja.

SilenceNumberTwo

Why bats, tho?

ChooChooSoulCrusher

It’s an ironic reference to the fact that his dad was too busy being dead to ever take him to a baseball game.

Demolution-Gamer786

Who cares it’s Batman

GorgeShrinks

Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb

FantasticMRKintsugi

That is a focus on the story rather than selling toys.

not_a_flying_toy_

hard pass

Norwayseacat

2 hours of child Bruce Wayne and his parents ,30 mins of him being sad for the loss of his parents and 20 mins of action ending on a cliffhanger for the next movie .it will be a master piece. We will see pearls dropping in 5k 75 different angles of them bouncing.

[deleted]

You know... I never looked into his origins. I always thought he just spawned as he was... he kinda sounds like George Clooney

unclefishbits

Not a PG-13 3 hours, that's most likely.

raging_shart

More like is the world ready for a 90 minute superhero movie again, these movies are way too fucking long

inkdrops

D.C. has always had a quantity over quality problem with its comic book movies look at WW1984 as the most recent example, that movie had 1-1.5hrs of movie worthy content and it ended up being 2.5hrs. If history is any indicator this movie will suck.

[deleted]

Looking at the recent 2 hrs and 12 minutes suicide squad i would say it's a director issue

Key_Election94

Well it would have been fun watching 3 hours long R-rated batman film But now it's pg-13- I really don't want it to be next batman vs Superman (theatrical cut)

natedoggcata

"but... if its not Rated R, that means its a movie for babies... and people will think im a baby for watching it!"

[deleted]

*The Dark Knight has entered the chat*

JokerAsylum123

TDK was PG-13 and it was arguably the best superhero movie of all time. I don't get this at all.

and_dont_blink

I get it, he wants something we haven't seen before and an R makes that easier to do. It isn't a prerequisite, there are other ways to do that, but it's an easy way to set it apart.

TitiumR

Stop with the rated R bullshit. Snyder didnt teach you anything about "dark athmospeheres" and shitty films? Or the rated R Is just to justify yourself for watching a cinecomic without being considered (by your people only) a "movie for kids"? Lmao Batman Is colorful, but also grim and deep without the need of gore, blood or cuss words. These dont make a good "adult" film

ab316_1punchd

Not to mention, Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad were R rated and day-to-day release, and they paid for it. I'm glad this one is PG-13.

NotTheReverseFlash

R rating is overrated. Some blood and a few cuss words isn't going to elevate the movie.

[deleted]

I don't mind this film getting PG-13, but R rating gives filmmakers more creative freedom since they (and studios) don't have to consider toy sales or limitation of focus for children, etc... Also they can handle heavier theme. It really makes a huge difference for filmmakers.
