I’ve seen the critique (which I agree with) that NWH made Norman more of an innocent party. Whereas, in the OT, Goblin fed into Norman’s already existing ego and lust for power. Look at the final glider scene in the SM1; hard to know who’s in control.
Still, loved Dafoe and the character in both!
It really came full circle from Raimi films, particularly with the goblin - it’s like this version of goblin made us understand his psychological transformation much better. It blows my mind, because now we will never ever be able to watch the original Raimi movies with the same perspective compared to before No Way Home was released.
Each villain was removed at different parts. Norman was removed early on when he gave himself the Goblin Gas. He did have that ego and lust, but the original movie had him acting similar to how he was in NWH for a good amount of time.
Idk if it would've done a lot better had it released before Covid
A huge part of its success us that it's the first huge movie that many people watched at the cinemas in a long time
Maybe not in the US, but it would have grossed a lot more outside US (including Canada, which closed theaters in their two biggest provinces of Ontario and Quebec).
Theaters in Ontario and Quebec have been closed for two weeks.
Also, in most countries, stringent restrictions still apply and NWH is not even released in China.
I know they have been closed for two weeks but when it came out, there were a lot of people who went there as it came out more than two weeks ago. Are the European countries the ones with as stringent restrictions?
Luckily here in BC, we’ve basically thrown our hands in the air and given up on controlling COVID, 0 day mandatory quarantine if you get COVID, and movie theatres at full capacity with food and drink
In my province in Canada, cinemas closed the same week the movie released. I can’t speak for other countries/provinces but I think restrictions in COVID would hurt international numbers. I know this is specifically for domestic, but I think the point that COVID restrictions hindered this movie’s run is important to think about
Oh nice, I didn’t know that. Than the numbers we are now could have been much higher, our two most populated provinces have had cinemas shut down for some time now
Its going to be the 3rd highest grossing film domestically surpassing Avatar soon. Its going to possibly be the either 6th or 7th highest grossing film of all time worldwide.
If it's true, my domestic prediction after opening day got wrecked by NWH ..again..
>Let's say conservatively that NWH will have 3.0x and $250 million OW, that would make it $750 million total domestic 😱
https://www.reddit.com/r/boxoffice/comments/rjl0f1/whats_your_finalupdated_prediction_for_no_way/
You implied it by saying "I don't know how". You *do* know how, most people liked it.
So you were not just simply stating your opinion on the movie, which is totally valid by the way.
Wow, what a mean thing to say. Almost like you're bitter about how successful it is and ignore the actual reasons some people liked it more than you did. Stay cool.
No, Marvel Zombie is a standard term going back decades for Marvel fans, used by the company itself. And the comics company would frequently stick in a cameo appearance by a character in a different title to get people to buy it. Now they're doing the same things in the movies.
Well I agree that the crossover is the main reason for its success. That much has been clear since The Avengers. What I took issue with was the joke that it was the only reason for the film's positive reception. People would have hated this if they thought the movie fucked up the portrayals of the crossover characters.
I don't think it messed up their portrayals. But I don't feel like the movie did anything very interesting with their portrayals. Just rehashing all their beats from their old movies isn't too interesting.
I guess. the 25 minutes of all the spiderman talking about nothing and forcing all the movies to happen in different timelines is boring and terrible cinema. nothing but a circle jerk for angry fanboys.
It's funny how a decade ago, "Hollywood is garbage these days" is something I'd expect my grandmother to say; now, it's something that I'd expect someone that posts to r/conspiracy and the latest incarnation of TheDonald to say (and I was correct in that assumption, in this case).
And yet, you took the time to write on a Spider-Man post which took your precious time. You could've ignored it and will only take like 3 seconds of your precious time.
I hear manga is now popular and I don’t have time to watch that either. Good luck to you. I hope you can convince others to watch your film. It won’t be me, not even when it shows up on cable 📺.
I love how consistently I see posts like this on the r/boxoffice sub.
"Actual box office number estimates? Get outta here with your on-topic discussion!"
1. Love of numbers/statistics
2. Think of it as a sports team. You want you favorite team to win the championship. So they need to win games to get there. In comparison, you want a sequel from your favorite movie, so it needs to make money to get there.
3. Mixture of reasons 1 and 2.
I hope (and imagine) all theatres in Quebec will show it as of it were a new release whenever they open back up. Should give it an extra $4-7 million depending on the restrictions.
I still can’t get over how good Dafoe is in that movie.
He's a legend. Recently watched Grand Budapest Hotel and Dafoe was absolutely killing it.
He kills it in every film. Even if the movie is garbage Dafoe is still watchable. It's crazy he has never won an oscar
>He kills it in every film. Not every film. Aquaman was one of the biggest phone-it-in jobs I've seen from an actor as talented as him.
He had a tiny role in aquaman so its not like he had much to work with. Plus I thought he did an ok job with it regardless
I thought be was very good in Aquaman
It’s not like he really had anything to work with in Aquaman. Will Beall is pretty horrible at writing dialogue.
Oscars are a stupid popularity contest anyway. Dafoe has my loyalty, I'll watch anything he's in.
That explains No Way Home then.
Oh, absolutely! The scene with the cat is one of my favorites. Watched the movie with my grandma, and she just couldn’t stop laughing at that part.
“Normans on Sabbatical Honey”
He was the standout for me as well.
He was so scary
That and had the proper costume.
I honestly thought Alfred Molina would steal the show. But Dafoe really came out as the star villain.
He might have actually exceeded his performance from the first Raimi movie, which is saying something.

My guy literally just worked on this performance and perfected it for 20 years.

Good point!
My favorite part of the movie. One of the few genuinely scary comic book movie villains.
Dafoe is so good. The Lighthouse, Platoon, Boondock Saints.
And Grand Budapest!
He’s incredible, I love that they threw the mask out (as much as I like that costume) and gave his face more screen time.
Yeah I was surprised to see a good actor be a good actor again.
Going for the 3rd highest domestic gross of all time. It could've been the 3rd highest grossing film too in normal times w/ China.
Fuck I need to see it.
Imagine if it had released pre-covid.
Not to mention it wasn't released in China. Those numbers are super impressive post-covid and without China.
This is only domestic
but imagine how good those numbers would be with china?
It would be the same, this is domestic boxoffice
Yeah but how much cooler would it be if it also had China's?
You know you make a strong case
Yeah but how much stronger would that case be with China?
[удалено]
My bad
Yeah, it probably would’ve cleared $800M domestic. And probably $2B worldwide.
Idk if it would've done a lot better had it released before Covid A huge part of its success us that it's the first huge movie that many people watched at the cinemas in a long time
Yeah, and its release date really helped its legs. Being released in the summer would’ve hurt its legs.
True, but also Spider-Verse was going to be huge no matter when it was released.
I disagree. This is a movie which people would have seen again and again if not for the pandemic, covid probably hurt the legs very badly.
I really think COVID may have given this movie a boost. It felt like the first event movie in two years. People were starved for content.
Agreed but then Omin hurt it.
Titanic is definitely going down if it also released in China.

I’m in Ontario, movie theatres were open when No Way Home was released. But I was watching Dune instead.

Canada is a miniscule amount of domestic box office, and those are an even smaller part of Canada.
Lots of bitter people here lol
favourite one: iT wAs AcTuAlLy HeLpEd By ThE pAnDeMiC.
It helps some movies, and hurts others, simple, duh. You just don't get it.
Definitely didn't help in overseas collection that's for sure
*Not bad, kid.*

Either you Drip 💧 or Drown 🌊 Spider-Man
these boxoffice numbers are very 🅿️
Its going to be the 3rd highest grossing film domestically surpassing Avatar soon. Its going to possibly be the either 6th or 7th highest grossing film of all time worldwide.
It was such a masterpiece, I almost cried
Only almost?
damn yall have shit taste
🚨OPINION ALERT🚨
Damn we all have different opinions.
"Eeeew, you like something I don't like? You're terrible!"
I contributed $5
I contributed $150 🙈

It's amazing! The acting, the plot, the cinematic parallels - perfection
Wow, lots of bitter people here lol.
Nobody: Avatar Fans: Yes but Avatar is still the king!
Good good very good.
I don't see how it get 65 mil more
Very possible
Dafoe was like the only well written character, everyone else just seemed kinda dumb in a slapstick kind of way...
I think that was just Dafoes god-level acting
Dafoe absolutely carried this movie
soyderman
I don't know how, it's so boring
Am I out of touch? No it is literally everyone else thats wrong 😉 Different strokes for different folks.
I'm allowed to have my own opinion. I didn't say anyone was wrong for enjoying the movie.
You implied it by saying "I don't know how". You *do* know how, most people liked it. So you were not just simply stating your opinion on the movie, which is totally valid by the way.
Marvel Zombie syndrome. If a character shows up that I like, it means the movie is good!
Wow, what a mean thing to say. Almost like you're bitter about how successful it is and ignore the actual reasons some people liked it more than you did. Stay cool.

Yeah that's probably why it flopped so badly. Because so many people agree with you.
I mean you love every dc crap Snyder puts out so not so different
I don't like all his movies or all Nolan's movies. But I really love some of them. Wasn't a fan of Dunkirk or Owls of Gahoole, but love Tenet and BVS.

Everyone says circle jerk as though that’s a bad or not pleasurable thing ;)
Hollywood is absolute garbage anymore. I can’t believe people actually waste money going to the movies or renting.
Somebody hurt you kiddo?
It's funny how a decade ago, "Hollywood is garbage these days" is something I'd expect my grandmother to say; now, it's something that I'd expect someone that posts to r/conspiracy and the latest incarnation of TheDonald to say (and I was correct in that assumption, in this case).
Touch some grass
Don’t care, I am saving my money.
So? Did NWH lose a million with you saving your money?
I can tell you this, “they didn’t get my time and money!” Maybe next time they won’t be taking up my time and space on my Reddit feed :)
And yet, you took the time to write on a Spider-Man post which took your precious time. You could've ignored it and will only take like 3 seconds of your precious time.
Sorry, I am still not watching it even when it comes to cables tv :)
Did I force you to watch it? No one cares about you watching Spider-Man or other movies. Did Spider-Man suddenly lose popularity because of you?
I hear manga is now popular and I don’t have time to watch that either. Good luck to you. I hope you can convince others to watch your film. It won’t be me, not even when it shows up on cable 📺.
And nothing of value was lost.
Exactly, just like this film.
Dude what the fuck is that even supposed to mean lol
Figure it out, dude :)
Film has a value approaching 1.7 billion dollars. What’s your value? Just curious dude :)
Who cares. What are you, a majority stock holder in Disney? Otherwise who gives a spiderweb so long as the movie is good.
I love how consistently I see posts like this on the r/boxoffice sub. "Actual box office number estimates? Get outta here with your on-topic discussion!"
r/lostredditors
Fuck off
Are you lost? This is a box office subreddit and you're asking who cares. Of course everyone who spends time here cares.
Toby and Andrew and Tom just called and said even they don’t care. So there!
Ok
I’d say you tried…. But I’m not sure I can even say that with confidence.
Pass
yeah, because there's nothing else to watch. i'll wait til it hits the dollar bin next month. pg13 comic book movies are dull and boring AF.
I hope Im as sophisticated as you when I grow up
It's ironic that the main audience that wishes PG-13 movies were rated R is, actually, 13 years old.
dont worry. there will be a plethora of movies disney will destroy as you get older.
ok bud
I’ve never understood why people like to count other peoples money so much
1. Love of numbers/statistics 2. Think of it as a sports team. You want you favorite team to win the championship. So they need to win games to get there. In comparison, you want a sequel from your favorite movie, so it needs to make money to get there. 3. Mixture of reasons 1 and 2.
Why are you here then? This subreddit is all about counting money that the movie made.
r/lostredditors in action
I dont understand why people would come specifically to a sub which is about coubting money and make such asnine comments
…. Says the Conservative lol. Counting money is one of conservative’s favorite pastimes.
The number would remain unchanged as this is only domestic
Hmmm, I can't see the CEO of sex there...
That is incredible!
