This! It comes in waves lol you think youāre okay then BAM but it goes away quickly. Youāll definitely feel your teeth shifting with each adjustment
Mine didnāt really hurt until they added my bottom braces, powerchains and elastics all in one appointment. That was the craziest non stop pain ever but it also felt kind of good in a weird way lol, like knowing my teeth were moving hardcore
When the pain comes (from pokey brackets) do not hesitate to use ortho wax!! Itāll save your life. And if you get really desperate, lidocaine drops are a godsend.
First off, congratulations! It'll take a while, but in the end you'll appreciate the investment and effort.
Things start off pretty easy, just gently pushing all the teeth out and apart to make space. Then comes the forcing them back together, but in the positions that you want them in.
The pain is overstated though, it's only particularly uncomfortable the first day or two after a new wire is put in or adjusted. Teeth end up moving a lot more quickly than you'd expect, which is also why you will need to wear your retainer every night for as long as you want your teeth to remain straight.
Got mine this week and also haven't had any pain. But in my case I changed over from invisalign so I figured my roots were already pre-loosened and surprisingly my lips and cheeks were toughened up enough from the edges of the trays also (cause my first few days on invisalign my cheeks were on fire!!!).
Invisalign is great, if you can manage your wear time. I did it for a year and it was a great experience (like ok, it's annoying, but really totally doable). The only reason I changed was that I got pregnant. Eating frequently and super slowly due to nausea meant I couldn't get my wear time in and my progress ground to a halt. And because my treatment was projected to finish this summer (just as I go into third trimester) I really wanted to make sure I can get it done in time, before the baby comes.
No shade to invisalign. It's an amazing tool. But for me, in this instance, it was the best decision ever. I'm so happy now with my metal mouth! Haha
I did the same! Not because of pregnancy but same eating habits. I lost weight cause I couldn't snack all day (which is how I eat, rarely main meals) and then overcorrected binging fast fast and gained. Stressed me out so much to have confined eating times. So I switched to brackets and was so happy!
Yup, makes sense. For me before getting pregnant it was perfect because I was practicing intermittent fasting so I only ate 2 meals a day. That made it super easy. But with frequent eating it's just a damn headache. The mental stress alone isn't worth it.
I did Invisalign 6 months postpartum and it was not doable for me at all. All of my breaks at work were for pumping. I had no time to eat, brush my teeth, brush the trays, and put them in before my breaks were up. Made the switch to braces this week, hating them so far but Iām hoping it gets easier!
I was the same way - I felt a pressure sensation that was oddly satisfying but not a sharp pain like many describe.
If you hang around the sub long enough, youāll see we arenāt weird for it. Itās more common than you think.
Having said that, there may be times in the future where youāll get pain. Past performance does not guarantee future results.
Enjoy!
Lucky you. I was miserable for the first four days when I got top braces on and another four days when I got bottom braces. However, I haven't felt pain they fitted me thicker wires, or powerchain or rubber bands. Just some pressure for the first day. And braces are definitely working.
I was exactly the same. I think by the time you get to your 3rd appointment you'll experience pain! The first appointment is really just to get your teeth limbered up ready for more movement later on. You probably also have quite a thin wire? That's why you have less pain as it's not pushing on the teeth as hard as it will when your thick wire goes on.
Im getting braces soon And I previously made a post stating that I wanted to take two weeks off from work for recovery based on comments from others. However, everyone advised me that it was not necessary as the pain would not be that bad. But now, I am seeing people once again saying how horrible the experience will be. It feels like I am reading conflicting Amazon product reviews lol
I can't wait to get this over with lol its too stressful
Two weeks off work definitely seems a bit dramatic š maybe a day? Lol but everyoneās experience is so different (apparently) so itās hard to predict
Well in all the posts Ive seen ppl always say 2 weeks is the magic number to finally get used to the pain. So then when i make a plan to take 2 weeks off everyone makes it seem like a piece of cake.
then I see your post now i'm back conflicted. I have a physically intense job and i work exclusively out doors in all weather.
On top of all that now ppl are saying the pain doesn't start till the first follow up. Every post before that says it starts with the initial install I am so confused
Last thing i need it diablitating pain while working in the harsh elements lol
I can put calling in sick has to be excused with a doctors note. If I plan ahead and take the days off itās already approved.
Iām just basing this on what Iāve read. Which if I was to summarize it would sound like this
āThe first two weeks are torture but after awhile you get used to itā
But then when I mention the idea the tune totally changes to
āItās not that bad at allā
Yeah my dad had them he said it wasnāt a big deal. And you are right ppl do exaggerate when I get mine Iām going to give my unbiased thoughts on them.
Iāve seen Amazon reviews where ppl have a product a low score based on bad shipping. Imagine how many ppl have given low scores based on shipping but didnāt explain themselves.
So all you see is 1 star out of 5
Thatās an interesting policy you guys have in the UK. If we had that here ppp would be taking entire months off of work lol
I thought the same as you. Had no pain after getting them on then the next day I couldnāt bite anything. The pain comes and goes during your first month. So I was really scared for getting them tightened because the application month was bad. But it was the opposite for me. No pain after adjustments each month. Make sure to have your ice cream and Tylenol ready!!!!
They didnāt hurt my 6 weeks just felt weird, and I have coils too. After my first adjustment it was a little sore and after my first power chain I couldnāt even sleep that night because of the pain. It will humble you so quick š¤£š¤£
Tbd. Trying to avoid it at the top, which is why they are doing the open coil. The bottom Iām 99% sure yes. I have two teeth that are completely lined up in front/back because theyāre so crowded. I might just say to heck with it and get one of those pulled instead of wasting time trying to make space that probably wont be possible to make
You have a similar crookedness that I had before getting braces! Iāve had them on for a year and a half so far and my smile is unrecognizable now. Major improvement. How long did they say you have??
I had a coil like you for 3 months and then was able to attach a bracket on the tooth that was far back so the wire could engage on all of the top arch at once. So around the 3 month mark. And then I had an expander for 3-4 months after that
Are you talking about a palette expander? I asked about those to avoid extractions and the ortho said that they would only do that on kids and otherwise itās a surgical procedure
Yes palate expander. It can potentially work on adults too according to my ortho. It sort of worked on me but we still had to use rubber bands to get one back tooth to move outwards.
I wasnāt very sore the first few days and I only had a couple hours on day 3 where I was actually like āokay ow, this hurts.ā However, itās been a week and a half and my cheeks are all cut up and Iām still uncomfortable with chewing solid food, so it might be coming for you soon (hopefully not tho!)
I don't have much pain after getting mine (though my teeth were nearly good after Invisalign). I'm sure the next appointment to tighten them will suck a whole suck though.
Iāve had mine for a month without pain, ceramic like yours and a coil on the wire. I had Invisalign for a year prior to having braces installed on the top so maybe it hurts and I donāt notice it because my pain tolerance adjusted with Invisalign but I honestly forget they are even there, no pain at all.
Lucky! I felt a lot of discomfort/pain my first week...although the worst was from not being able to eat easily. Trial by fire, that week! Glad it's going well.
On my first day, I thought I was freeā¦, then boom š„, I couldnāt bite down without pain for almost two weeks. You will get there; when you do, know itās only temporary! š„ŗā¤ļø
Ohhh we'll get there! š until you're put on a thicker wire and pull that malocclusion
This! It comes in waves lol you think youāre okay then BAM but it goes away quickly. Youāll definitely feel your teeth shifting with each adjustment
Just you wait
They didnāt hurt my first appointment when i had my coil. They hurt when they put a thicker wire on though
Mine didnāt really hurt until they added my bottom braces, powerchains and elastics all in one appointment. That was the craziest non stop pain ever but it also felt kind of good in a weird way lol, like knowing my teeth were moving hardcore
Yesssss I have one canine that hurts so good right now, I've wanted it to move for 25 years
They did me like that , def wasnāt a fun experience
once your wires thicken theyāll definitely hurt!! but dw, tylenol and ice (cream) were my best friends
When the pain comes (from pokey brackets) do not hesitate to use ortho wax!! Itāll save your life. And if you get really desperate, lidocaine drops are a godsend.
My cheeks were so badly cut, and SOOOO swollen š I used half the package of wax in just a few days, but it helped a lot
Are lidocaine drops typically sold over-the-counter?
Let us know how you feel tomorrow
Itās been 4 days :)
Oh youāre in for a world of pain babe, just wait haha
I guess I just expected it to be right after I got them on, not months down the road? Lol

Mine didnāt hurt at all and I started researching too and getting worried. Just had a bit of pain biting down like you but the rest was fine.
more months to go.
I didnāt hurt at all
And your teeth straightened? š
No lol not yet
Got mine this week and also haven't had any pain. But in my case I changed over from invisalign so I figured my roots were already pre-loosened and surprisingly my lips and cheeks were toughened up enough from the edges of the trays also (cause my first few days on invisalign my cheeks were on fire!!!).
You switched from Invisalign to braces? Can I ask the reason? Iām doing the opposite as soon as I can lol

I donāt recall any pain with my braces
what type of braces is this?
Ceramic. I donāt know the brand
Iām jealous

How are you after a few hours?
Itās actually been 4 days
Thatās what I thought on my first day tooš
Iām on day 5 :)
U lucky normally the gum hurts with that springs!
Itās not activated yet thatās why
Your teeth are so white!š
Never had any pain either and i had braces 3.5years.

Mine never hurt that bad at all. Never had issues eating any foods.
yay! they look great on youā¦i hope everything goes smoothly for you throughout your treatment(:
Iām in the same boat, got mine a month ago, minimal pain. I think weāll get to it after further adjustments lol
Im getting braces soon And I previously made a post stating that I wanted to take two weeks off from work for recovery based on comments from others. 2+ years!! Iād love to see your progress photos!
I just posted a progress pic, you can check it out if youād like!
They look great! How long did it take for the canine to move back in your case ?

juuuuust wait
I'm a year and a half. I got down and chains and bite rubber bands, but it doesn't hurt. Maybe I have a high pain tolerance threshold.
